What are those apps you usually post in your productivity updates?
hi! here's a breakdown of apps i use, as well as websites and other resources i've used/use for my learning (mainly chinese, though some of these resources can be used for other languages as well).
apps i use every day:
dot languages: this is a chinese-specific app where you select your hsk level, and then read articles at that level. there's a pop-up dictionary, an option to show pinyin, post-article vocab practice (audio, matching, translation, and writing), and the option to have your articles either in simplified or traditional.
TOFU learn: a blend between flashcards and writing, you can find decks for various things, including hsk level-specific decks, and you learn new vocab with the stroke order and then write each new term three times—once with an overlay (so the term is visible), and then two times from memory. there's also a review function, which helps you practice terms you've already learnt, and each term has audio that goes with it. i use it for chinese, but there's decks for esperanto, french, german, italian, japanese, korean, norweigian, portuguese, russian, spanish, swedish, and turkish.
the pleco dictionary app: my favourite chinese dictionary app; allows you to translate from english to chinese or chinese to english, has options for writing, radical, vocal, and keyboard entry, and has both traditional and simplified characters.
ankiapp: this one's not particularly complicated; it's a flashcard app, where you can make your own decks or download decks other people have made. it uses a spaced repetition system to help you remember terms—you rate yourself from worst to best on how well you remembered the term, and that determines how many times it'll pop up afterwards. it also gives you an overall grade for each deck, which is a nice way to measure your progress.
duolingo: probably my least favourite of all of the apps i use; the chinese course isn't the best, and now that they've removed the notes/grammar information option, there's no way for people who aren't already fairly familiar with the language and its inner workings to learn them if they exclusively use duolingo. it's okay for maintenance practice, though, but i'm already almost finished with the entire course and i would say it barely reaches to lower hsk 4, so i wouldn't say it's a good tool if you're more advanced.
apps i have but use less often:
readibu: this is sort of like dot in that it's an app for reading in chinese with a pop-up dictionary. however, that's where the similarities end; readibu has novels, short stories, and articles aimed at children, and each of those are further split into genres. readibu also lets you add your own web-pages and read them on the app, so you can use its pop-up dictionary with them. it's aimed more to intermediate and upper intermediate learners, with hsk levels ranging from hsk 4 to hsk 6. the only reason i rate dot above readibu is because dot has a larger range of levels (hsk 1 through hsk 6 i believe? but it may go higher) and exercises built in to help you learn the vocab.
the chairman's bao: also a chinese reading app, though if you use the free version, you only get one sample article per hsk level (hsk 1 - hsk 6). i believe that every so often you get a new sample article for each level, but i'm not sure what the interval on that is. it also has a pop-up dictionary and a flashcard option for saved vocab.
du chinese: another chinese reading app; it has articles divided into newbie through master (six levels in total, though they don't line up perfectly with the hsk in my experience), and new articles are free for a certain period of time before becoming locked behind a paywall. there's a pop-up dictionary and a vocab review/test option for vocab you save.
memrise: flashcards with audio, depending on whether you're using an official course or a user-generated deck. decent, but it can get repetitive.
hellotalk: not exclusively chinese, but i believe it started off mainly aimed that way. you set your language, and then your target language, and then you can talk to native speakers who have your language as their target language. potentially incredibly useful, but if you're like me and extremely introverted you may have a hard time using this app, since it requires a lot of one-on-one interaction.
slowly: i haven't actually gotten around to using this, but it's sort of like a digital penpal app, as i understand it. you can learn more about it here.
websites and other miscellanea:
this massive mega drive by @salvadorbonaparte (languages, linguistics, translation studies, and more).
this masterpost by @loveletter2you (linguistics, languages, and language learning books/textbooks).
this masterpost on chinese minority literature by @zaobitouguang
the integrated chinese textbooks by cheng and tsui, which are the textbooks i use for self-study—there's textbooks and workbooks, as well as character workbooks (though these can easily be cut out without suffering from the loss).
mandarinbean: graded readers, hsk 1 - hsk 6, with a pop-up dictionary and the option to read in traditional or simplified
chinese reading practice: reading, beginner through advanced (three levels), with a pop-up dictionary and some additional notes included on vocab and language-specific things non-native speakers might struggle with or not know.
hsk reading: graded readers, hsk 1 - hsk 6, divided into three sections (beginner, intermediate, advanced). does not have a pop-up dictionary, but does have an option to translate the text, post-reading quizzes, and notes on important vocab with example sentences.
my chinese reading: reading from beginner to advanced (four levels); has a pop-up dictionary, the option to play an audio recording of the passage you're reading, notes on key words, things that are difficult to translate, grammar, and post-reading comprehension questions.
the heavenly path notion website, which i would say is one of the best resources i've ever found, with a massive number of guides, lists of chinese media in a variety of forms, and general resources.
chinese character stroke order dictionary: what it says on the tin; will show you the stroke order for a given character.
hanzigrids: allows you to generate your own character worksheets. i use this very frequently, and can recommend it. the only downside is if you want to create multiple pages at once, you have to pay; however this can easily be circumnavigated by creating only one sheet at a time. you can download the sheet as a pdf and print it out for personal use.
21st century chinese poety: a resource i only came across recently; has a massive collection of contemporary chinese poetry, including translations; much more approachable than classical poetry, which can often be incredibly dense and hard to parse due to the writing style.
zhongwen pop-up dictionary: if you're reading something in chinese on a website that doesn't have a pop-up dictionary, this is a must. i've never encountered any words that it doesn't have a translation for so far, including colloquialisms/slang. i use it to read webnovels, and it's been a fantastic tool. you can also save vocab by hitting the r key when you're hovering over a word/phrase, making it easy to go back and add terms to your flashcard deck(s).
chinese reading world: a website put together by the university of iowa; split into three levels (beginner, intermediate, and advanced), with thirty units per level, and ten modules per unit, as well as multiple proficiency tests per level. each module is split into three parts: a pre-reading vocab quiz, the reading with a number of comprehension questions based on it, and a post-vocab reading quiz. it also rates you in relation to someone with a native proficiency based on how quickly you read and answer the comprehension questions, and how many vocab questions you get right.
jiaoyu baike: an extensive chinese-to-chinese dictionary, put out by the taiwanese ministry of education. you can find an extensive write-up on it here, by @linghxr.
social media etc: see this post by @rongzhi.
qianpian: another chinese-to-chinese dictionary; @ruhua-langblr has a write-up on it here.
this writeup on zero to hero by @meichenxi; initially aimed at chinese learning, but now has expanded greatly.
music rec's: this masterpost by @linghxr.
tv/film: youtube is a great place to find chinese tv shows and films, and they often have english subtitles. if you can't find something on there, though, you can probably find it either on iqiyi or asianvote, which have both chinese and other asian shows and films (though you'll want an adblock if you're going to use the latter). i use these a lot to watch things, and have discovered a lot of media through these, and then novels through those when i went searching to see what they were adapted from.
polylogger: a website for logging the amount of time/type of language study you do. has a wide variety of languages, and the option to follow other people. still, it's a fairly basic site.

20 Delightful Idioms From Around The World! Idioms Like Mandarin’s ‘Take Your Pants Off To Fart’ Make No Sense To English Speakers—At Least, Not To English Speakers Who Haven’t Read This List.
— By Lorna Wallace | April 16, 2024
Languages around the world have their own strange idioms. Bubaone/Digital Vision Vectors/Getty Images
Idioms are by definition non-literal, but native speakers of a language rarely think about just how nonsensical these sayings can sometimes be. For instance, using the cat’s pajamas—a phrase popularized by flappers during the Roaring Twenties—to describe something as amazing doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. But English isn’t alone in having idioms that sound delightfully bizarre; here are 20 examples from languages around the word.
To slide in on a shrimp sandwich // Swedish
Thinking about the immortality of the crab // Spanish
Take your pants off to fart // Mandarin
In the whale’s ass // Italian
No one becomes an unbeaten bishop // Icelandic
One’s shoes are thrown to the rooftop // Turkish
Don’t push granny into the nettles // French
You don’t know the letter ‘giyeok’ even after putting down a sickle // Korean
Chase away fright with a bladder of peas // Afrikaans
There are owls in the bog // Danish
Lid shut, monkey dead // German
Throw your rifle in the rye // Czech
A handful of shit is better than a handful of fart // Thai
Take the little horse out of the rain // Portuguese
The fence is not made of sausage // Hungarian
Should I sniff my nails? // Greek
I’m neither the top of the onion nor the bottom // Persian
Don’t let your daughter-in-law eat fall eggplants // Japanese
You are a radish from which field? // Hindi
To show someone where the crayfish are wintering // Ukrainian
1. To slide in on a Shrimp Sandwich//Swedish 🇸🇪
Tumblr media
In Sweden, one popular idiom references a shrimp sandwich. Bortonia/DigitalVision Vectors/Getty Images
Meatballs are probably Sweden’s best-known cuisine around the globe (thanks, IKEA!), but this Swedish expression involves a slightly higher-class food. Att glida in på en räkmacka is used to describe someone who hasn’t worked hard for the things they have or what they’ve accomplished. So, for example, some nepo babies could be said to have slid in on a shrimp sandwich.
2. Thinking About the Immortality of the Crab//Spanish 🇪🇸
Tumblr media
In Spanish, one idiom considers a crab’s lifespan. Redlio Designs/DigitalVision Vectors/Getty Images
In Spanish, pensando en la inmortalidad del cangrejo is a poetic way to say that someone is daydreaming. Crabs aren’t immortal, of course, which simply adds to the whimsical quality of the phrase. Other languages have their own versions of this mind-wandering idiom: In Polish, the expression is myśleć o niebieskich migdałach, which means “you are thinking about blue almonds.”
3. Take Your Pants Off to Fart//Mandarin 🇨🇳
Tumblr media
One Mandarin idiom references flatulence. Borisz/Digital Vision Vectors/Getty Images
Although this Chinese idiom about flatulence is probably best left unsaid in polite company, it’s a hilariously evocative way to describe someone doing something pointlessly over the top. Tuō kùzi fangpì (脱裤子放屁) is what’s known as a xiehouyu (歇后语), a shortened witticism. There are two parts to the saying, with the first being idiomatic and the second providing an explanation. In the case of taking your pants off to fart, the rationale is that it’s an unnecessary action, which in Mandarin is duōcǐyījǔ (多此一举). As with English equivalents—for example, speak of the devil and he shall appear—it’s usually not necessary to say the second part.
4. In the Whale’s Ass//Italian 🇮🇹
Tumblr media
An Italian idiom considers a whale’s posterior. Malte Mueller/fStop/Getty Images
Another butt-related idiom that comes in two parts is Italy’s in culo alla balena, which literally translates to “in the whale’s ass” and is comparable to saying “break a leg” in English to wish someone good luck. The respondent must then reply “speriamo che non caghi,” “let’s hope it doesn’t shit”—otherwise it’s bad luck. A less vulgar alternative is in bocca al lupo, “into the wolf’s mouth,” which is most commonly answered with crepi, “may it die.”
5. No one becomes an unbeaten bishop // Icelandic
Looking to say “no pain, no gain” the Icelandic way? You’ll want to use enginn verður óbarinn biskup, which means “no one becomes an unbeaten bishop.” This idiom is supposedly a reference to the medieval-era Icelandic Bishop Guðmundur Arason, who is said to have faced a lot of hardship on the road to his religious position.
6. One’s Shoes are Thrown to the Rooftop//Turkish 🇹🇷
Tumblr media
One Turkish idiom involves shoes on a roof. Bortonia/Digital Vision Vectors/Getty Images
If you want to say that someone has fallen out of favor in Turkish, use the idiom pabucu dama atılmak. The story goes that during the Ottoman Empire, if a shoemaker was judged to have crafted an inferior product, the shoes they had made would be thrown onto the roof of their shop to serve as a warning sign to other potential customers—hence the connection between declining popularity and shoes on roofs.
7. Don’t Push Granny into the Nettles//French 🇫🇷
Depending on the context, faut pas pousser mémé dans les orties either means “don’t exaggerate” or “don’t push it.” For instance, say you offer to bring a bottle of expensive champagne to a party—when the host asks if you can bring three instead, you’d be justified in saying “don’t push granny into the nettles!”
8. You Don’t Know the Letter ‘Giyeok’ Even After Putting Down a Sickle//Korean 🇰🇷 🇰🇵
A colorful way to call someone “foolish” in Korean is nat noko giyeokjado moreunda (낫놓고기역자도모른다). Although this idiom may seem nonsensical in translation, to anyone familiar with Hangul, the Korean alphabet, it makes perfect sense. The first letter in the alphabet is giyeok (ㄱ), so it’s considered the most basic letter because it’s the first one that children learn. It also happens to be shaped like a sickle, so if someone doesn’t know giyeok, even when looking at the blade, then they aren’t the sharpest tool in the shed.
9. Chase away fright with a bladder of Peas//Afrikaans
Tumblr media
Peas are part of an Afrikaans idiom. JakeOlimb/Digital Vision Viectors/Getty Images
In English, people who scare easily—like Scooby-Doo and Shaggy, for instance—are said to be “afraid of their own shadow.” In Afrikaans, the expression is jy kan hom met ń blaas ertjies die skrik op die lyf jag, or “chase away fright with a bladder of peas.” That’s also not the only Afrikaans idiom to describe scaredy-cats though; another is skrik vir koue pampoen, which means they’re “afraid of cold pumpkin.”
10. There are Owls in the Bog//Danish 🇩🇰
Tumblr media
Owls are a part of one Danish idiom. Bubaone/Digital Vision Vectors/Getty Images
The Danish idiom for describing something as suspicious or fishy, der er ugler i mosen, doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, likely thanks to a corruption of the original phrase. It’s thought that this expression started out with a reference to ulve, “wolves,” but that at some point the Jutlandic dialect of this word, uller, was misunderstood as ugler, meaning “owls.” To be fair, although there’s more reason to be cautious of wolves than owls, the canines were actually extinct in Denmark between 1813 and 2012. This phrase has also crossed over into Swedish (att ana ugglor i mossen, “owls in the moss”) and Norwegian (which is the same as in Danish).
11. Lid Shut, Monkey Dead//German 🇩🇪
To say “end of story” in German, simply use the idiom klappe zu, affe tot, meaning “lid shut, monkey dead.” Although klappe can also be slang for “shut up,” in the context of this phrase it means “the story is done” or “that’s that,” rather than being a rude way of telling someone to stop speaking.
12. Throw Your Rifle in the Rye//Czech 🇨🇿
Rocky Balboa would never give up and throw in the towel—a phrase that came from the boxing convention of literally throwing a towel into the ring to admit defeat. In Czech, the saying is hodit flintu do žita, or “throw your rifle in the rye.” The origins of the Czech version of the phrase are less clear than the English version, but Slovenians also say something similar: vržemo puško v koruzo, “throw a rifle into the corn.”
13. A Handful of Shit is Better Than a Handful of Fart//Thai 🇹🇭
This proverb is along the same lines as the English saying “a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush,” which advises being content with what you have and not risking it for more. The Thai version, kam khi di kwa kam tot (กำขี้ดีกว่ากำตด), is slightly different, asserting that it’s better to get something—even poop—than nothing. Having said that, if this adage were taken literally, most people would surly prefer a handful of fart (although there are always exceptions!).
14. Take the Little Horse 🐎 Out of the Rain//Portuguese 🇵🇹
Tumblr media
One Portuguese idiom involves a horse in the rain. CSA Images/Getty Images
When telling someone to give up on an idea in Portuguese, it’s common to say “tirar o cavalinho da chuva,” similar to the way “don’t hold your breath” is used in English. The origins of this phrase possibly come from when horses were the main mode of transportation. If a guest was invited to stay at their host’s house for a while, they would be told to stable their horse, rather than leaving it out in the elements. These days, the idiom is used ironically to shut people down: If a kid asks to see a scary horror movie, for example, their guardian might reply “take your little horse out of the rain!”
15. The Fence is Not Made of Sausage//Hungarian 🇭🇺
This Hungarian idiom assumes a love of sausage, which is a staple food in Hungary. Nem kolbászból van a kerítés essentially means that something or somewhere isn’t as good as you think it is.
16. Should I Sniff My Nails?//Greek 🇬🇷
Tumblr media
In Greek, asking “should I sniff my nails?” has nothing to do with actual nail smelling. CSA Images/Getty Images (Left) One Japanese idiom involves eggplants ... and daughters-in-law. Digital Vision Vectors/Getty Images (Right)
If a Greek person is asked a question that they couldn’t possibly know the answer to, they’ll reply with the expression prépi na miríso ta níhia mu (πρέπει να μυρίσω τα νύχια μου). It literally translates to “should I sniff my nails?” but it basically means “how would I know?” The idiom supposedly comes from Ancient Greek oracles dipping their fingertips into hallucinogenic oil and then sniffing them in order to enter a trance-like state that would apparently enable them to predict the future.
17. I’m Neither the Top of the Onion Nor the Bottom//Persian 🇮🇷
Persians don’t simply say that something has nothing to do with them—instead, they say that they’re man na sar-e piâzam na tah-e piâz (تو سر پیازی یا ته پیاز). Both the top of an onion (the leafy greens) and the bottom (the round bulb) are edible, hence why saying you’re neither means that you’re no use in a situation. The expression can also be turned around on someone else to tell them to stop meddling in something that isn’t their business.
18. Don’t Let Your Daughter-in-Law Eat Fall Eggplants//Japanese 🇯🇵
One story behind the idiom akinasu wa yome ni kuwasuna (秋茄子は嫁に食わすな)—meaning “don’t allow yourself to be taken advantage of”—is that eggplants are particularly good in the fall season, and so such a delicacy shouldn’t be wasted on daughters-in-law, who historically ranked fairly low in the traditional Japanese family hierarchy. The alternative explanation is less cruel: Eggplants are thought to cool the body, which allegedly makes it harder to get pregnant.
19. You are a Radish From Which Field?//Hindi and Urdu 🇮🇳 🇵🇰
Don’t be fooled into thinking that the Hindi and Urdu saying tuu kis khet kii muulii hai (तुमकिसखेतकीमूलीहो)/تُو کس کھیت کی مُولِی ہو is really about where a radish took root. It’s actually used as a derogatory response to someone, along the same lines as “what makes you so special?” or “who do you think you are?”
20. To Show Someone Where the Crayfish are Wintering//Ukrainian 🇺🇦
The Ukrainian way of telling someone that you’re going to teach them a lesson—in a threatening, rather than an educational, way—is показати де раки зимують. (The idiom also exists in Russia: Я тебе покажу, где раки зимуют.) The apparent reasoning behind this phrase is that catching crayfish in winter is an unpleasant job due to freezing temperatures, so anyone forced to do it sees it as a punishment.

A friend of mine asked me, “How many languages can you speak fluently without errors?” I was a little taken aback as I had always felt proud of being a polyglot (someone who is multi-lingual). I could converse in a couple of other languages but speaking without making a mistake - I wasn’t so sure! This remark made me think about polishing my language skills. I began looking for a course to learn using languages confidently without making mistakes. Learning a new language is always exciting! I started looking at Rocket Languages as an option, and as I looked further, I was convinced of its capabilities! Mastery over languages is never easy to achieve and requires your full attention and focus. With most language apps, you will need to devote a lot of time to lessons. Once you sign up for Rocket Languages, you will understand why it is such an excellent language training tool. It aims to make the best use of your time. What is Rocket Languages? Rocket Languages is a popular language-learning website and app today. It is a comprehensive and interactive language learning tool. Its primary focus is on learners keen on achieving proficiency in the language they want to master. Currently, the languages you can learn are Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Italian, Hindi, German, Korean, Chinese, French, and Russian. The app trains you to read, listen, write, and speak the chosen language fluently. Rocket Languages has three difficulty levels for each language, which in turn have modules. There are several lessons within the modules too. Rocket Languages use a point system to track your progress and help you improve your score every single day. You can compare your points on a graph and leader board. The program focuses on: Improving new vocabulary (using flashcards as teaching tools) Hearing to improve your speaking skills (using audio clips) Perfecting your pronunciation (using voice recognition tools) Quizzes to find out how far you have understood the conversation in the lesson Writing tests Methods of Teaching It is recommended to do the language course online via a computer or via their app. They have both IOS/Android versions. However, if you wish, you can also download their course material as PDF files. The audio lessons have various levels that have 30 lessons each and take a total of 60 hours to cover. Each lesson makes you listen to an audio clip on a particular topic lasting about 15 to 40 minutes - this will be in your native language and in the language you want to learn. You will get a translation of the clip, and you must repeat the words and phrases out aloud. The vocabulary and the grammar portion are divided into fragments, and you get tasks such as games, quizzes, and flashcards. You will find that each level comes with 60-120 hours of culture and language lessons. Grammar is given importance so that you understand the language better and get a better insight into the origin country's culture. Since the lessons contain many texts, you may find it a tad tiresome, but they are definitely useful, and you shouldn’t give up. There is a whole section for writing lessons in the language you want to learn. You will learn new characters, and this will help you further. The site follows a highly targeted self-teaching strategy. The survival kit lessons teach you to use phrases that are mainly used in your day-to-day life, at shops, when using the public transport system, and at restaurants. Travelogue, available in only a few languages, can be purchased at an additional cost. This helps you when you are about to travel and want to understand the destination country's language. All useful phrases from hiring a taxi to traveling around the city are covered. Progress Monitoring After every session, you have five subsections under "Rocket Reinforcement." Each of them aims to consolidate whatever you have learned in the previous lesson to ensure your efforts are firmly placed in mind.
Your progress is rated by the software, and you cannot move to the next module till all of them are completed. After each audio lesson, you will be asked to translate words in the language you are learning - this is in the self-assessment section. Community The advanced learning technique articles help you learn the languages quickly and efficiently. Language teachers, fellow learners, and native speakers are always available for premium users to interact with. I really like the fact that you have a community of sorts to turn to if you need anything. They are there to help answer your questions during the learning process. Pros It makes you understand and speak the language correctly It suits all learning styles Very easy to understand and follow Engaging and interactive Speaking practice with voice recognition You can play the lessons on a computer or phone As many as 12 languages are taught One-time fee for access all through Audio instructions and interactive exercises are blended well American Sign Language, which is not offered by many language learning sites A simple interface Lots of opportunities to test your learning Cons At times, voice recognition does not work properly Practice exercises are a bit clunky Not enough space for practicing non-Roman scripts There is an expensive initial payment Exercises may be somewhat repetitive The quality of the course differs with each language Final verdict As someone who wanted to learn more languages and learn them well, I find Rocket Languages to be a very useful app. It offers lots of resources to learn to read and write the language. Of course, you must dedicate time to use the material properly. I rate Rocket languages a full 5 Stars! The approach and methodology that Rocket Languages adopts is quite impressive and definitely worth the try if you seriously need to master a language. It is, of course, not without flaws. Yet, you will feel more comfortable with the lessons and exercises compared to many other language teaching sites. After some time, you can always come back for a review. Honestly, being so interactive, the courses at Rocket Languages are addictive!

KMail provides very tight integration with KDE and other Kapps. And of course, KMail is a perfect integration with KDE along with its Kontact (KAddressBook) app, which make perfect duo for email communication. Oh man! I was not going to place KMail after Evolution, being a KDE user, I will surely appraise what my DE does better. Link tracking, Mailbox insight helps track your email activity. Contact profiles provide businesses to help show their social media profiles beside their regular emails. Templates are designed for enterprise users to address issue of retyping the same email over and over.
Mailspring news pro#
These are some of the Pro features available with a paid subscription of Mailspring. Quick reply templates, Contact Profiles and more While that list might not sound exhaustive but its not complete. It provides localization support for German, French, Spanish, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Polish and Brazilian Portuguese. It provides translation for Spanish, Russian, simplified Chinese, French, and German right inside the draft. Mailspring addresses these issues in innovative ways. I have been using Thunderbird for some times and my observation was that Spell check works decently but translation won’t. Translation, Localization and Spell Check While undo send feature seems quite buggy at the moment, it does a great job. Whenever you are sending a mail, simply click the Read Receipts icon at the bottom to enable tracking if the mail was opened. Those features are not just limited to WhatsApp and Instagram (Snapchat? they couldn’t afford servers may be). Apart from the default themes provided within the app, the community provided themes add salt and spices. It bends well with the current desktop environment as well as provides some of the good looking themes to chose from. The coolest feature that other clients in the list lack (almost) is the ability to morph.
Mailspring news free#
The free version will include everything that a regular desktop user would expect. It has very slick and aesthetic UI design. Perfect integration with most of the Desktop environmentsĪlthough many people will prefer Evolution or Kmail for better integration with Gnome and KDE desktops, respectively, Thunderbird’s look and feel integrates well with most of these desktop environments.* Provider for Google Calendar is one useful addon that I use.įrom blocking unwanted images in emails to providing online protection against most of the phishing emails, Thunderbird does it all pretty well. Just like its sister, Mozilla Firefox, Thunderbird has got some of the coolest add-ons. Tabbed email lets you open email in separate tabs so that you can continue reading another email while reply to an important email waiting for you. This is one of the most acclaimed feature that I like about Thunderbird, which most others in this list do not have. The top loved features of Thunderbird are, The project strategy is modeled after Mozilla Firefox. Thunderbird is a free, open source, cross-platform e-mail, news and instant messaging client.

When it comes to email clients on Desktop, Thunderbird remains choice for many users, be it Windows or Linux. I have used these apps on my Thinkpad running Arch Linux with KDE Plasma 5. Here’s a comprehensive list of the best email clients available for Linux desktops. I am mostly listing down the most notable features that distinguishes them, apart from the regular features that almost all the clients support or must support to be termed an email client like IMAP, SMTP, and SSL/TLS protocol.
Mailspring news download#
The idea of this list is to provide comprehensive guide to most of the email clients available to download for Linux distributions. On Linux Desktops, however, the choice boils down to a countable candidates only. Few of these are open source and free while others provide enterprise features on paid basis. On Windows, we have Official Microsoft Outlook app among eM Client, Thunderbird, Hiri, Inky, Mailspring, Spike which handles emails pretty well. Google’s very own Gmail app, Bluemail, K-9 mail, Nine, Microsoft’s Outlook, ProtonMail, Zoho Mail, Yahoo Mail and the list continues to grow.
Mailspring news android#
On Android or iOS, the selection has varieties. While the In-Browser email clients for most of the mail providers are feature rich, native clients have their own added benefits.

2020 October Update
So... we've launched. And our launch was... actually kind of... bad...
This is a dev blog, so I'll speak on it. But before that, we do have the game's steam page up. If you're anticipating the PC release, please do visit the steam page and add it to your wish list. It would help us a lot.
VISIT STEAM LINK
...
So what didn't go so well?
1. We launched in Nintendo's Americas and Europe territory. If you've been following the release, you'd know that America got the game first. We didn't move to launch in Europe at all since I thought the EFIGS languages (English, French, Italian, German, Spanish) were pre-requisites for Europe. By the time I learned that this wasn't necessarily the case, and attempted to course correct, the damage was done. We had half the allotment of keys to do outreach, and maybe some European outlets that would've covered us, did not.
2. When the game launched, rather than a victory lap, what we experienced was more of a public lashing. We did get some reviews that praised the game highly, but just as many reviews lampooned the game for its high difficulty or other failings. I've since released two patches (or 3, depending on how you count it) to address the difficulty. A lot of overnighters. If you recall in the last blog post, I thought it'd be a good start if we got 20 or so reviews on Open Critic. But we've only 8 as of this writing, and the aggregate score isn't so hot. So that's a fail by my metric.
3. A publisher reached out to us because they were interested in physically printing the game! Yay! But... to advance our talks, they wanted to see the game's sales numbers to ensure that there's a good chance their investment could be recouped. And unfortunately, the game's sales numbers are pretty low. They backed out :(
Some hard lessons were learned. The biggest lesson for me concerns how well we playtested the game. Looking at the original playtester list, it's a short list. You may recall from a previous blog post that our ability to test was severely hampered by technical limitations. Add to that, a lot of people on this list are objectively really achieved players. We're talking power ranked in Smash Bros, regular tournament goers, and people who've played and bested every Souls game. And as the maker of the game, I am most blind to the game's challenges.
Now, I'm definitely more of the opinion that you prioritize PC development first. I still have some reservations about some stages of PC development. But if you do PC/Steam first, you have the great benefit of being able to do Early Access, which gives you access to a greater testing pool. I now view it as an invaluable part of the equation. If we had been able to do Early Access for 1 or 2 months before release, we probably could have ironed out most of the game's difficulty and balance problems. Hard lessons, indeed.
There were a lot of other notable events that occurred over the past 2 months - the travails of press outreach, realizing my own limits as a developer, feeling defeated and getting back up again, etc. There's too much stuff to chronicle or go into detail. But it wasn't all bad.
Some good things did happen...
We got a publisher to publish for Japan! It came as a huge relief, because clearly, we don't know what the heck we're doing.
The publisher has been an invaluable source of information and feedback. They've recommended some changes to the game to improve user experience. Some of these changes I was hesitant to do at first because they concerned systems I thought integral to the identity of the game. But after trying it, I have to admit, they're good changes.
So a Japanese version of the game was moving ahead. And it looked like that'd be it. I wasn't planning to move forward with any other language translations due to the game's low sales and our funds being depleted.
But, I was approached by a translator who urged me to move ahead with translations. He told me he was willing to work for only a small price initially and then be paid the rest after from a percentage of the game's sales until the cost of the translation was paid in full.
I was surprised translators were willing to work under such a model since it's entirely likely the game's current low sales trajectory would continue and they wouldn't earn back the full cost of translation. But I was also flattered they were willing to take a risk with me. After that, I approached some others with the same hypothetical deal, and long story short, we're now moving forward with French, German, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian translations. As for why these languages in particular, they were languages for whom I had contacts (because they reached out to me at some point in the past). And also because they were deemed more likely to be profitable based on their home country's gaming market/buying habits. I'd be personally happy to have my native language be represented, but it's not expected to be a profitable territory. But if the game does better in the future, it may justify the costs of translation. There could be a chance!
The plan right now is to get the game supporting these first round of languages and then to patch that into the Switch version as well as launch the PC version with these languages - all in December. A lot of things need to align for this to occur, so a delay isn't out of the question. It'll be busy... I'll update the blog again in latter half of December, probably near the game's PC launch date... OR to announce a delay. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.
Fan Support
While the past two months have been grueling, one good thing remains constant - fan art! Thank you everyone who submitted. It means a lot to me and the team!
Tumblr media
Big thanks to Pimez who's taken on watching over the reddit community as moderator. He also combs the other communities and makes sure I see every new art piece. Despite juggling his own life and all these tasks, he still found some time to draw.
Pimez's piece reminds us that just because the new game's out doesn't mean we can't still celebrate the original flash game. The jail dog is a dog found only in jail and only in the flash game. I imagine Gail is just tossing a stick, and they're playing fetch.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A new artist to this scene æv draws both the Phoenix logo AND a super cute picture of Gail playing the flute. So precious, you want to pinch her cheek. Even the Sand Drake is enthralled!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another new artist, beet4ppy arrives on the scene with two pictures! One features a no-nonsense battle-hardened Gail looking stoic and tough! Kinda reminds me of Vinland Saga actually. The other, a more cheerful group composition - I must say I'm a big fan of Fran's classic anime-style eye!
Tumblr media
A returning artist, Cody G, returns with a picture depicting the tribulations of cooking. Gotta love Gail's frantic expression! I've heard the complaints, which is why we've added an option to slow the cooking mini-game down. An improved button font is also on the way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gamesing with two undertale x phoenotopia crossovers. Thomas being a robot builder makes sense taking a role similar to Alphys. But why is Alex dressed like a clown? Perhaps there is a hidden meaning here...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A new artist, Warotar, draws both a pooki wearing Gail's clothes and Gail wearing pooki clothes. Awww. The pooki is a bit scary - it kinda reminds me of a tragic event in a certain anime. But the Gail is adorable!
Tumblr media
POL#5655 submitted this one to KM's discord which made its way to me. Here, a stylized Gail appears unnerved by the dark red eyes stalking her in the background. Are they bats or something more sinister?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A new artist, MilesCPW, arrives on the scene with three rare well-vectorized arts! Love it! One scene depicts Gail balancing a bomb on her head - that's a speedrunning trick I only learned about recently after someone emailed me a video O_O
The other drawing gives us new insight into Katash - he could actually look cute if he wasn't trying to kill you.
And the bees... Okay, this one got a chuckle from me :D
Tumblr media
A returning artist roccy_chair draws this heart-warming scene from the beginning of the new game. Aww. Mika doesn't get much screen time for story reasons, so it's nice to see her represented.
Tumblr media
UnrealWorld_32 returns with another drawing of Gail in Panselo, this time capturing a more idyllic time. I like the tranquil nature of this piece. And Gail does in fact play the guitar, denoted by the guitar in her room.
Tumblr media
Returning artist shafiyahh draws a nice portrait of Prince Leo - looking regal and princely. I like the storybook art style of this piece. It made me immediately think of "the Little Prince" - one of my favorite books actually!
Tumblr media
Negativus Core returns with a beautiful group composition of Gail and the gang - flying from a Switch shaped window - totally sensible considering the game is only Switch right now. As usual, I'm impressed by Negativus Core's use of challenging angles to frame a more dynamic shot of the characters. Great job!
And it wasn't only artists bearing the banner. I'd like to give a big shoutout to everyone in all the game's little communities (from the reddit to the discords to this tumblr). I've seen this community help newcomers with gameplay and walkthrough advice, discussions, updating the wiki, and so on. It does bring a smile to my face. Thank you everyone!

French Musical Recommendations/review (Part 1)
It’s great seeing people get into musicals other than broadway and westend (don't get me wrong I do love westend/broadway shows and off- shows, some definitely do get less love then they deserve), I thought I’d make a list of French shows I love/ (and know about), I know most people already know these shows but I thought it would be fun ! (This is mainly based on soundtrack as I have had no opportunity to watch most of these shows)
Le petit prince (2002): I love this show, it might be my favourite based solely on soundtrack, the music is really soothing and beautiful, if you like Daniel Lavoie he has quite a few songs in here, “Le plus beau et le plus triste pays” is what made me love Daniel Lavoie’s voice, for you Mozart l’opera rock fans Laurent Ban is in here and has one song “Moi je” which is also a fun one, you should be able to find a recording and full show on YouTube last time I checked
Tumblr media
Le rouge et le noir (2016): the music is more rock pop (it’s a rock opera) so if that’s your vibe, I will say the soundtrack doesn’t have all the songs featured in the final developed show which is a pity because “L’amour nous désarmés” and “La sagesse est de tous les âges” are bops, you can find a recording of the full show on YouTube, or the concept concert which is just the actors singing no plot and only features the song on the album (so newer songs in the full show are missing)on YouTube as well
non-music: the plot is alright, I mean it’s based on the books of the same name, the staging is nice and simple, heavy reliance on digital screen backdrops, the costume is debatable in my opinion it’s vaguely historical and some of the blocking was strange (the horse riding scene was hilarious how they executed it), though I will say the imagery and lighting with the screens is quite lovely and can be quite effective in adding to the emotions of the acting and songs
Tumblr media
Mozart l’opera rock: y’all know it, it’s the rock opera about Mozart with a focus on his relationship with Salieri in the 2nd act, of course the French cast is beloved as I too really love them but here are some other casts you may want to look into as well,
the 2013 Japanese cast, sings and clips can be found on YouTube, there was a indigo and red version where the actors playing mozart and a salieri switched roles, thus two ver., I will say not all the singing is the best but I think the renditions of popular songs like l’assasymphonie are great, it is a non-replica production
there’s also a Korean cast which I’ve only heard bits of, again through YouTube, they too are very talented and I recommend, it is a replica of the French version
I don't necessarily recommend it but there is the illegal/legal ukranian concert ver, it’s on YouTube (there’s one with the French cast and another without), I say illegal because at some point the original Mozart actor complained about it being illegal on instagram or something but later there was another concert of the Ukrainian singers with the some of the original French cast so honestly don’t know, they are good but the costumes were really... on a tight budget it seems but hey its a concert
and the final ver that I know of is the takarazuka 2019 version, I will be honest it’s not as good as the jp 2013 version lyrically, they made changes for reasons I do understand however I think it’s still a miss for me (if anyone’s interested I can talk more about the differences) but the vocals are still good so I would still give it a listen (not sure if you can find songs on YouTube, maybe on tumblr someone posted some songs?)
Tumblr media
La légende du roi Arthur: this is the Florent Mothe lead King Arthur musical for those Mozart fans, though the whole cast is absolutely wonderful and deserve all the recognition, music wise it’s alright, more pop heavy, I like quite a few of the songs, has some fun wind instruments in there, the reason I don’t love it is because some songs blatantly sound like a radio song (mainly a comment on the backing track), I would still definitely give this show a listen, you can’t go wrong with the songs (my favourites are Mon combat, Auprès d’un autre, and maybe il est temps) I know there’s a Korean version (in 2019?) and a takarazuka ver in 2016 but I know very little about it but I’m sure there are others on here who are better informed, the full French show can be found on youtube
non-music: the plot seems alright, I’m a little doubtful on the ending but hey I skipped through it so maybe I just missed stuff, some of the costumes are hideous in my opinion (the red gold Arthur) and I have some complaints about props but could be a budget/ practical reasons (mother puppet, the golden cage) but it’s still quite a large and impressive show with many dancers so despite my opinions it was still a cool show to watch for the staging and visuals, the large layout with dance is similar to that of Robin des Bois,
Tumblr media
Romeo et Juliette: de la haine à l’amour/ Roméo et Juliette: les enfants de Vérone: this one is a classic, a bit complex to explain but there are two versions as can be seen by the change in the sub title, the first title is the original ver and les enfants is a later version with changes, I won’t go into detail but wiki and other tumblr accounts I’m sure can be helpful, this is a fun musical about r+j, If you like the play or just like musicals I think this is a good starter musical to listen to, music can be popish but the backing band?/orchestra? is lovely,
French 2001 Original (de la haine à l’amour) full show available on youtube
French 2010 Revival (les enfants de Vérona) I just call it a revival, they add songs and I think cut parts out, stage and costumes differ from original, full show available online, there is an Asia tour version of this as well
I was first introduced to this show through the Italian ver. (Romeo e Giulietta: Ama e cambia il mondo) which I think has some of the best costumes, all of act 1 can be found on YouTube and the soundtrack and clips should also be available, this production ran twice with mainly the same cast for both times, it is a non-replica production
Hungarian ver.(Rómeó és Júlia), has a rap in “Les rois du monde” which I love, you’ll find it’s one of the fan favourites, I know clips and the full show is available on YouTube, it is a non-replica production
Russian ver. (Ромео и Джульетта) was a replica production of the original French ver., full show on YouTube
Korean ver. (로미오와 줄리엣) was a replica of the French revival ver, clips of scenes on YouTube, separately there’s a full amateur production on YouTube as well
Takarazuka ver. (has done it multiple times) One of their renditions can be found in full split up into multiple videos on YouTube, and general clips are also available, non-replica production
Japanese ver. Toho, (ロミオ & ジュリエット) the original version ran in 2011 and then 2013 (non-replica) it was then brought back in 2017 with a completely new designs and choreography and this version ran again in 2019, it’ s non-replica and clips of the new design version can be found online, has two casts, the black version cast and the white version cast
German/Austrian ver., (Romeo und Julia: das Musical) has Mark Seibert as Tybalt for you Mozart! and Elisabeth fans and Lukas Perman as Romeo, the costumes are debatable though, again non-replica production, clips and the full show (split into parts) on YouTube
infamous English/British ver. which is awful (nothing against the cast), the lyrics were just really bad and the costumes aren’t great except for maybe Juliet’s wedding dress, had a short run, you can find the songs on YouTube
Dutch/Netherlands ver. (Romeo en Julia: van Haat tot Liefde), replica of the original French ver., full soundtrack and some clips can be found on YouTube, there was a Netherlands/Belgium tour but I assume it is the same?
Spanish/Mexican ver. (Romeo y Julieta) 2008 Monterrey, its a replica of the original French with adjustments, clips of all the songs can be found on YouTube, there are also a more smaller local production from 2019 that also has clips on YouTube (it seems to be trying to replicate the French revival costumes)
Israel ver. (רומאו ויוליה מחזמר) set is similar to the French revival but it is a non-replica production, clips available on YouTube
Romanian ver. (Romeo si Julieta) also has the “Les rois du monde” rap part, clips on YouTube, was confirmed that it is the a replica of the Hungarian version
Slovakian ver. (Rómeo a Júlia) 2013, it’s a non-replica version, some clips are available on YouTube
Portuguese ver. (Romeu e Julieta: do Ódio ao Amor) non-replica and clip(s?) are available on youtube, I personally quite like their “Verona” ensemble harmonies
Have I missed anything? let me know!
Edit: There is also a Czech ver. non-replica at the Forum Karlín in 2015, clips are available on YouTube (I recommend adding the forum name when searching), there was also another German ver. at Thun in 2015, it is non-replica and some making-of clips can be found on YouTube (adding “Thunerseespiele“ can help in finding it), and there was a Mongolian ver. though only music videos are available
I really recommend this show maybe start with the original french?

Why So Jaded Chapter 8
Tumblr media
FFN AO3
Enjoy.
Chapter 8
Violet was all too happy to get Buddy out of SEB and even let him drive her SUV to where they needed to go on her first official "Raid Day". Where all the "spiders" would be "sleeping" and it would give Buddy and Violet some breathing room.
"Oh my God, may the heavens themselves bless you, I almost forgot how nice it is to drive and not be driven around everywhere." Buddy thanked her gratefully as he drove her very nice SUV around Metroville, surprisingly remembering his way around here as he marveled at how the city had grown and developed since he drove around in it last.
"So are we clear?" Buddy breathed.
"Yes, all the "spiders" are sleeping. They're not gone but they're sleeping. And I've been practicing turning some that Phillip doesn't control and isn't keeping track of off and on again along with every other one I can get my hands on so I can turn them on and off on my own." Violet divulged.
"You do realize that you are officially the coolest person I know right? Like that is mind blowing cool." Buddy told her which got her to giggle as he drove them to their first destination because Buddy had surprised Violet with breakfast in his apartment.
"Thanks, I try, I just needed to witness them being put to sleep in order to figure out how to do it. Because all I've been able to do before is just know that they're on and where they are. But that's it, I mean there have been a few that I've purposefully overpowered and fried. Like turning a burner on its highest setting. But I hadn't been able to figure out how to turn it down." Violet continued.
"That's a really good metaphor." Buddy realized.
"Thanks." Violet grinned and Buddy looked over to see her hand resting on her arm rest and resisted the urge to just reach over and hold her hand before they went to a butcher shop to get their main course as Buddy was all too happy to give her some pointers and how to pick out a great steak or chop, and then it was onto a Merry Cherry to order a good cake for dessert that Violet would be picking up Saturday morning and then to a big box store to get all kinds of things, from a playpen and toys for the kids to other ingredients and then they stopped for lunch at one of Violet's favorite places to get lunch on her days off when she wasn't in a suit, which was a 'FUBU' Mexican place which she explained was a "For Us, By Us" Mexican place and Buddy was impressed when she spoke flawless Spanish in ordering for them.
"How many languages do you speak?" Buddy asked.
"A lot." Violet answered.
"How many is 'a lot'." Buddy posed curiously.
"Take a guess." Violet prompted.
"Obviously, at least two." Buddy guessed as he dug into the chips and salsa.
"Higher." Violet gestured for him to up his guess as she helped him decimate the delicious chips and salsa because both were super fresh and delicious.
"Five?" Buddy blinked and his eyebrows rose in surprise when she gestured to go higher.
"Ten?" Buddy pressed.
"Close, 12, complete fluent languages."
"What are they? Can you tell me?" Buddy prodded.
"English, Latin- and it's the Latin that made learning Italian and Spanish a breeze but I learned Mexican Spanish first and then Spain Spanish second. Let's see- I know French, Turkish, Arabic, Chinese Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Russian and lastly Portuguese, I know bits and pieces of Swedish, German, Hindi and Greek. So technically more like 16. But I have to because Phillip is a world traveler and businessman and wants to make sure that he understands what everyone around him is saying, because again, paranoid." Violet explained.
"That and I already knew most of those before I ever worked for him because of my other work." Violet shrugged nonchalantly.
"And that's why you're the best at what you do." Buddy realized.
"It's one of the things, yes." Violet agreed before their tacos and other ingredients were brought out.
"Ok, these tacos are already amazing but to make them better, squeeze the lime to cut the fat, a spoonful of rice, a scoop of refried beans, a dash of mole, cover in queso, and just a dab of the green salsa unless you love really spicy then add the red and viola, the perfect taco." Violet urged as she did what she preferred to her own tacos as Buddy copied her pattern as they lifted their tacos and bumped them together.
"Cheers," they both smiled at each other before they each took their first bites before Buddy outright moaned and Violet giggled again and hummed in agreement.
"Oh, oh this is amazing." Buddy praised between mouthfuls.
"Now you see why I like to come here. FUBU anything is always better than the "mainstream" version and these are handmade, hand pressed corn tortillas that were being made as we were ordering and you always double up on the tortillas." Violet appraised.
"How many other little gems like this have you found in the city?" Buddy asked.
"Oh, dozens. Any and every kind of ethnic food you can think of, all of them 'FUBU's' . A year ago, in an effort to get a break from all the spiders, I would take myself out to lunch all on my own, I'd leave all the electronics in the car and park it like down the street and sometimes over a street from where I was really going and take like an hour and a half lunches, trying to find all these little hole in the wall places where there wasn't so many watching eyes and listening ears. And along the way, I found some amazing food and then I never showed any of them to him. Because I didn't want him to invade what little spaces of freedom and breathing room I had found. Not that he would be caught dead in any eatery that didn't have a five star rating and at least one Michelin star."
"So why are you bringing me to a place like this?" Buddy asked.
"Because I have a very good feeling you won't invade them. That you'll appreciate sharing them with me, and if anything happens and I disappear, it'll be one of the few places I'll reappear in." Violet answered softly.
"Well, count me honored and privileged then and if I'm ever in a position that I think I'm being tailed, I won't come anywhere near here or anywhere else you would take me, cause I would hate for an invasion, much less an infestation to take place." Buddy vowed.
"Good." Violet smiled appreciatively.
Once they finished lunch, which ended up taking a few hours because they got lost in conversation, they went to Violet's favorite wine and liquor store that was huge because they had everything under the sun where Buddy felt like a kid in a candy store as Violet showed him all her favorites and made suggestions based on his chosen menu and Buddy noticed that the more the day progressed, the closer to him she came, to the point that she was always taking his arm when they were walking side by side or simply standing looking at wines and other spirits and he was all too happy to get her doors for her and did his best to be a perfect gentleman which Violet appreciated and it was there in the cold room of the liquor store where Violet and Buddy were staring at one of many walls of floor to ceiling craft beer before none other than Keith and Greg showed up since they just got off of work and stopped in their tracks and stared when they saw Buddy in there with Violet as they huddled together in the cold room, trying to pick out beers but Violet didn't really drink beer and Buddy didn't either so they weren't sure what exactly they were looking at.
"Bud?" They called out before Buddy turned his head.
"Hey guys." Buddy greeted happily as Violet put on a friendly smile since she had already been running background checks on them and recognized them from meeting them in Vegas when Buddy had introduced them to her formally at the casino.
"Are you out on a walk?" They teased Buddy.
"He is, I figured if I held his hand, he wouldn't have to be on a leash." Violet answered with a shit eating grin which got them all to laugh as she slipped her hand into Buddy's and held it for emphasis but wouldn't let it go and Buddy was unbelievably pleased about that and gently squeezed it a little in appreciation.
"It would look a little strange." Greg allowed.
"Especially when he has to wear a shock collar to go with it." Violet clicked her teeth with a wink that got all of them to erupt into further laughter as Buddy's cheeks were beet red along with his ears and suddenly the cold room wasn't so cold anymore.
"So you're into that kind of thing?" Keith teased Violet.
"No, it was just a dig." Violet answered with a shake of her head.
"Damn." Buddy sarcastically snapped his fingers in his other hand in mock disappointment as Violet raised a challenging brow at him.
"I mean, whew, am I glad you're not." Buddy re-answered with a cheesy grin which earned some snickers from his friends as Violet just chuckled and shook her head.
"I'm gonna go back out and check out the cordials with the cart and warm back up, you guys can stay and pick out beer, help him pick out something you guys will like and enjoy on Saturday." Violet offered sweetly before she excused herself and Buddy immediately missed her by his side.
"Dude!" Keith quietly congratulated as he came and did the handshake hug with Buddy.
"Bud, be careful, you're playing with fire." Greg warned as he did the same.
"I know there's a risk for both of us, that's why we're just friends." Buddy reassured Greg.
"You didn't look "just friends" when we came in, you guys looked like 'cute couple' and even 'wow what's a dime like her doing with a nickel like him'." Keith murmured as he got to work getting some really good beers for Buddy to take to Violet which earned a humph from Buddy.
"Really? I'm a five." Buddy deadpanned.
"Four, five was generous." Greg added with a playful punch to the shoulder as Buddy gave him an unimpressed look.
"Sad part is I agree. So what beers should we get?" Buddy asked.
"Oh Dragon's Milk for sure. We need to cover the bases, we need to get a good stout or two, perhaps a porter, maybe a couple of lagers and pilsners and IPA's to round it out." Keith urged as he started pulling out what looked good.
"You and craft beers." Greg just shook his head at Keith who started handing him six packs and four packs before he handed the others to Buddy to hold.
"Yeah, but I'm grateful because anything other than whiskey or vodka and I'm lost." Buddy shrugged.
"Speaking of how are you doing with that?" Greg asked.
"Doing good, surprisingly." Buddy answered honestly.
"Well with a tall glass of water like the one you're with. I'd think you'd want to stay sober so you don't miss a second of her." Keith answered before he snagged two dessert beers himself.
"This is true." Buddy agreed with a fond grin.
"You know, even though she's kind of off limits. She did look pretty happy with you and vice versa. Whenever I see her with Phillip, she looks so serious and looks like she's just always on and always working and can't relax. With you it's like she's just hanging out and it's a lot more casual." Keith appraised.
"And you would be absolutely right and that's why she likes hanging out with me more than him." Buddy grinned victoriously.
"Just don't screw the pooch by screwing the boss' pet." Greg warned.
"Like I said, just friends...so far." Buddy admitted as he tried to keep his smile in check because the thought of anything more was too much to hope for yet strangely well within reach.
"So you've thought about it." Greg prodded.
"Yeah, I mean I'm still alive and have a pulse don't I?" Buddy returned as his friends hummed and murmured their agreement to that sentiment.
"Yeah I thought I saw your smile grow a little brighter when she held your hand and teased you like a proper girlfriend." Keith grinned.
"Ok, I don't know about you guys but I'm freezing my ass off in here, can we be done? Please?" Buddy requested before Keith grabbed one more.
"Yes, now we're done." Keith assured him as the three managed to get out and look through the store for Violet who was perusing the cheeses because the liquor store had a couture snack market to go with all the wine and spirits and had a really good selection and was putting some cheeses and crackers together and was getting hit on by some guy who was trying to lean into her personal space while he spit his best game at her and judging by her own body language, she was doing what she could to ignore him.
"Here's your chance, play her boyfriend and scare off the creeper, do it, do it, do it!" Keith urged in an excited whisper to Buddy who was already picking up his steps to come to her rescue.
"Honey? You pick out the cheeses you wanted?" Buddy took a chance and asked as he slipped the beer into the cart next to her and the smile Violet gave him was pure magic.
"Almost, I can't decide between the brie and the camembert. Did you guys get enough beer?" Violet giggled as Keith and Greg unloaded their beers into the cart too as she held up the cheeses in question to Buddy.
"I think we should get both." Buddy decided.
"Very smart decision Dear. I knew there was a reason I married you." Violet cooed as she stole into his side after she slipped them into the basket of the cart with the others.
"Oh, I..I didn't see a…" the guy tried to say as he started backing up at the sight of Buddy and his friends around him and knew he was outmanned and outgunned.
"Oh it's at the jewelers, one of the accent diamonds was coming loose." Violet waived off. "You ready to check out Handsome?" Violet urged Buddy as she practically moved Buddy into place pushing the cart so she could still wrap her hand around the crook of his elbow as he pushed it.
"If you are Darlin." Buddy answered as he followed her lead.
"Then let's go." Violet agreed as they walked to the check out as Violet let her head fall on Buddy's shoulder as they waited in line before she kissed his shoulder.
"Thanks for the save." Violet thanked him as she let her lips linger there and the utter delight in her eyes had Buddy hoping and praying and wishing on every lucky star he had that one day he'd make that a reality.
"You're welcome." Buddy answered before he took a chance and kissed her forehead sweetly which practically made her beam a happy smile at him as Keith and Greg knew then, that there were serious sparks there and were torn between being happy for their friend yet terrified for them both.
"You guys are gonna help us load all this up right?" Violet put to Keith and Greg who were buying their own packs of beer as they stood in line behind Violet and Buddy.
"Yeah, of course." They agreed from their place behind them and once through the line, the guys did their best "Tetris" it all into the back of Violet's SUV with everything else they had bought.
"Guys, it would be appreciated if not a word is breathed about what happened in there." Buddy reminded his friends as Violet was happy and relieved that he said something instead of her having to.
"I don't know what you're talking about," Greg answered.
"I didn't even know anything even happened." Keith shrugged.
"Thanks guys." Violet answered appreciatively as Buddy smiled proudly.
"Well, say hi to the missus' from us. See you Saturday guys." Buddy bid them before he opened the door for Violet to get in the SUV before going around and getting in it himself and was pleasantly surprised when Violet laced her fingers in his after he got the SUV in gear.
"Thank you for saying something to them, it meant that I didn't have to slip back into Ms. Parr and could just stay Violet." Violet thanked him in a soft murmur but her adoring smile was utterly divine.
"I didn't want that to happen either, if there's anything I can say or do to keep you as Violet, doesn't matter who I'm with, just let me know." Buddy returned as he chanced a gentle squeeze to her hand and was happy when she squeezed back but made no move to remove her hand from his.
"So where did you want to go out to dinner?" Buddy asked.
"Ok, I know another really good place." Violet answered as he gave him directions on where to go where she brought him to a dim sum/tapas place that was run by a couple where the wife was Chinese and her husband was from Spain and it worked beautifully as Violet once again ordered off both menus in both languages since their server was the couple's daughter and was herself trilingual, flipping from one to the other flawlessly to get all her favorites and Buddy was utterly enchanted to see her smile so excitedly and once all the food came out and soon covered every surface of the table and the dim sum had to be triple stacked because the tapas couldn't be, Buddy just beamed a proud smile to see her do a happy dance as she uncovered everything before she went around and identified everything that she ordered before she got her own plate and began getting one of everything, using her chopsticks like a pro before going for the soup dumplings first and walked Buddy through trying to eat them without burning his mouth before they alternated between the tapas and dim sum, slowly but surely getting through most of it, and making sure to at least try one of everything and Buddy felt he would have to loosen his belt and ate until he was just about stuffed.
"Ok, we have to get one more, it's a dessert dumpling." Violet said as she waived down the waitress and ordered what she wanted before she nodded and left again.
"I don't know if I could eat much more Vi." Buddy admitted as he took a breath, and tried not to belch too loudly.
"Just one more bite, find that extra pocket everyone keeps for dessert and get it ready to receive amazingness." Violet urged as she organized what they would be taking home in leftovers in the to-go boxes and in a few moments one last steamer box was brought out and Buddy could smell chocolate.
"Behold, chocolate soup dumplings, with chocolate, Nutella and bananas." Violet revealed as she took the top off as Buddy oohed. Then he carefully got the little pillow of mochi dough surrounding the gooey center and Buddy melted in his seat when he bit into it.
"See? Best last bite." Violet urged as she began to bire into one of her own.
"Do you know how to make this?" Buddy asked.
"Yes I do. The mochi dough is hard but the filling is easy." Violet answered as she finished hers just about the same time Buddy did.
"Do you want another or are you good?" Violet asked.
"I'm good, now if I take another bite, I'll pop." Buddy admitted.
"Wouldn't want that to happen." Violet replied with a fond smile before she checked the time.
"Well, we have two hours before our 12 hours of freedom is up. How do you want to spend it?" Violet asked.
"I don't care. However you want to spend it." Buddy returned.
"Could you do me a favor?" Violet asked thoughtfully as she tilted her head curiously.
"Name it." Buddy furthered.
"As sad and shallow as this is going to sound, I have not hung out socially with anyone except for other "gifted" individuals. In...well in years and being from a "gifted" family, all they know are other "gifted" people too and with other gifted people, you don't worry about hiding your gifts cause everyone has them and we always play and try to one up each other. So to try to be "normal" yet feel comfortable is going to be especially hard for me. It's going to be a challenge for me to stay Violet especially when I'm around anyone and everyone, but you, as Ms. Parr or simply "Vi" with my family. So...would you help me pick something to wear? Like set the tone, something actually casual but nice but not...intimidating. Because Ms. Parr is always commanding and intimidating wherever she goes and I don't want to be like that with your friends cause they'll never feel comfortable around me and if they're not comfortable, it's going to ruin it and this is your first social visit and I want it to go well and I don't want to ruin it for you. And I would ask Jack but he would see to it that I come in head to toe designer labels." Violet confessed lowly as they once again leaned across the table so they could drop their voices and have a private conversation despite the very busy restaurant.
"Of course." Buddy agreed.
"Awesome, then let me pay for dinner and we'll go." Violet offered and once they got their things, Violet directed Buddy to one of the high rise apartment buildings in town. Not the most luxurious, but close.
"Ok, now go to the tenth floor of the parking garage and park in parking space 10245." Violet directed as Buddy did as she asked, still not letting go of her hand as he drove his way up the parking garage. Not surprised when he saw a sea of Mercedes Benz, BMW's, Land Rovers and even some classic cars and sports cars before he found the right spot and parked her SUV into it before they got out and walked into the building where a doorman let them in from behind tinted glass of the entry way.
"Good evening Ms. Parr."
"Good evening James, how's Linda faring today?" Violet returned politely.
"She's doing better, thanks for asking." He answered before he looked questioningly from Violet to Buddy.
"Awesome, this is my guest Mr. Bartholomew Pine, This is Mr. James Conner. " Violet introduced before the two shook hands inside the entryway.
"Welcome to Sky Way, Mr. Pine." James said as he opened the door both of them as Violet came into the building and into the lobby of the floor.
"Good evening Ms. Parr." The receptionist greeted cheerfully.
"Good evening Samantha, how are you this evening?" Violet politely greeted.
"I'm doing great, thanks for asking, you have three packages today. Let me go get those for you from cold storage." She said as she quickly left and went into the office behind the desk and promptly returned with three packages, which were chilled before Buddy offered to carry them for Violet which Violet was grateful for before Buddy went with Violet to her apartment where she opened the door for him so he could get in and Violet blew out a breath of relief when she could tell that the "spiders" were still sleeping in her apartment.
"You can put them on the island." Violet directed as she got her actual mail that had been scattered on the floor since it overflowed the little mail basket and threw a small forcefield around all of it and pulled it back to her hand.
"That's a neat trick." Buddy commented as he passed her in the little hallway.
"Thanks, Jack calls it my 'yo-yo' powers. It comes in pretty handy so I don't have to bend over and pick anything up off the floor." Violet murmured a little distractedly as she looked over her mail and sighed as she began to look through it and started to organize it according to what it was before she used her powers to yo-yo two letter openers into her hand once they both came to stand at her kitchen island.
"You get the packages, I get the mail." Violet offered as she handed him one of them.
"Ok." Buddy agreed and took it and started opening her boxes which were all meal kits, which was why they were in cold storage to keep the contents fresh before he put all the food away for her as Violet opened her mail as she opened her bills first and looked those over before she opened all her other mail, ignoring the junk mail and going straight to the checks and opened those before she got a pen from a drawer in the island and signed the checks then got her phone out and took pictures of her checks to deposit them into her accounts directly before she put the checks into an envelope with the date written on the envelope to signify which checks she got which days before she put the envelope into a filing cabinet under the month folder.
Buddy couldn't help but notice that her income was far exceeding her expenses but kept his observations to herself as he realized her apartment was just as nice, if not nicer than his own apartment space. Quite luxurious and modern actually.
"You have a nice apartment." Buddy praised.
"Thanks, I'm never here enough to enjoy it, I only sleep here and eat about two meals a week here. Phillip insisted that I stay at a "safe, protected and respectable" place, so that left either here or a place at Green Gardens or Garden Square where he owns the penthouse there and that was way too close to comfort for me. Besides it has a spider and a mole problem and in two years when I'm not working for Phillip, I'll very happily be walking away from it." Violet answered as she took off her jacket and put it into the closet.
"I can take your jacket." Violet offered before Buddy took off his jacket and handed it to her.
"A mole problem?" Buddy repeated.
"Yeah not only does this place have thirty something "spiders" but the door men at both the ground level and this floor and half the reception staff and every single one of my neighbors on all sides are on Phillip's payroll to keep tabs on me and if I had to guess Phillip just got either two calls or texts or whatever saying that I've taken you to my place and so the spiders are about to wake up here, any minute." Violet predicted as she closed her eyes and focused on them around the place.
"Jeeze. Yeah, gilded cage." Buddy realized as he looked around and suddenly frowned at all of it, wondering where the spiders had their webs.
"Yup. So, let's go to my closet." Violet urged as Buddy followed her to her frankly gorgeous bedroom before she opened up a door that led to the most amazing walk in closet that was practically full of gorgeous dressy business clothes, handbags and heels before Buddy noticed that Violet stopped and stared at a little sliver of regular looking clothes before she took them all off the rack and then laid them over the bed before she decided to try to pull just a few of her more flattering blouses.
"Too much?" Violet asked as she held them out for Buddy as she held them in front of herself.
"No, like if you were to pair that with a pair of jeans it would be just fine. Granted Tammy, Lisa and Beth are probably going to dress up just a little bit too. You don't have to compete with them and you don't have to be the most beautiful woman in the room, I mean you will be no matter what, but that's just my opinion, but this isn't a competition. Just be Violet. Wear what you would if you were hosting a get together at your place with people you're comfortable with. Wear what you would be comfortable in. Remember almost all of them have kids and kids are messy so don't wear anything that won't be the end of the world if Beth's baby throws up on you or the kids decide to finger paint you with ketchup or something." Buddy explained as Violet just smiled appreciatively at him.
"Well, these are dry clean only, so something washable." Violet decided as she put them back and went through her other blouses before she came across one of her favorites that would 1. Make her look beautiful. 2. Was machine washable. 3. Not too dressy and it would go with the necklace Buddy had gotten for her that she had yet to take off.
"This." Violet decided before she held it up to her jeans before she found a nice pair of jeans to go with it.
"Perfect." Buddy nodded in approval.
"Are you sure it's not too dressy?" Violet questioned.
"You'll be fine. Honestly you could show up in just a plain t shirt and jeans and be fine." Buddy reassured her.
"Well, ok, well how about I pack, this and...this. Just in case Beth's baby practically leaks out of every orifice." Violet decided as she gathered what she wanted and put them into a small duffle bag before throwing in some unmentionables quickly from her dresser as Buddy simply sat on the bench at the foot of her bed and contentedly watched as she got what she wanted from around the room as he fantasized about how she would pack if they were actually together and he had told her that he was taking them away on vacation as he thought of all the places he would like to take her as he started to fidget with the skin around his left ring finger, wondering what kind of wedding ring she would get him if they ever did or could get married. He remembered fantasizing the same thing with Tali. But part of him was grateful that she had turned him down, because if she hadn't he would have never grown out of his obsession. And would have she been truly happy with him? Especially the person he was back then? Or would she have felt the way Violet felt about Phillip? Grin and bear it and then bolt at the first opportunity as he realized what had been Tali's breaking point. When he had shot down the plane that had them all on it. He had been so hell bent on revenge on Mr. Incredible that he hadn't even felt the slightest bit of guilt or shame in ordering to kill kids. He had no respect for the sanctity of life, especially young and innocent life and how much he deserved what he had gotten. He had earned it. That was for sure.
"You ok?" Violet asked as she noticed Buddy get withdrawn as he seemed to stare off into space before she settled next to him and reached out and held his hand again and brought him out of it.
"Yeah." Buddy took a deep breath and tried to clear his head of his accusing thoughts.
"Just deep in thought." Buddy tried to brush off.
"About what?" Violet asked curiously.
"The spiders are still sleeping." Violet whispered as she decided to rest her chin on his shoulder again and give him a curious look.
"Just wondering how close the parallels are between Tali and I and you and Phillip." Buddy confessed and Violet took a deep breath through her nose.
"Would you be surprised to learn not a lot?" Violet returned.
"I was an asshole, how could she stand me?" Buddy questioned, almost rhetorically before Violet lifted her head and just shook her head with a fond grin of her lips.
"Because of who she was at the time herself. You were strong and powerful and knew how to throw your weight around and she felt that you were simply misunderstood and she was genuinely attracted to all of that, especially when you treated her like a goddess and catered to her every need, want and whim and she was bound and determined to turn the two of you into a powerhouse couple. Be the next Beyoncé and Jay-Z but of the tech world. She appreciated your genius and knew it would just be a matter of time before the rest of the world recognized and appreciated it too and she was in it for the long haul. And if you hadn't tried to blow me and my family up and then when we survived how you treated us when you captured us, even as kids. Those were the steps too far and really bothered her conscience as they should have anyone. Otherwise she would have stayed. But messing with kids was her line in the sand as is mine. And when you stomped on it, that shook her hard enough to really see you for who you really were in that moment and it made her question if her genuine attraction was to you or to everything around you and question if it was worth it and she decided it wasn't. So she acted accordingly." Violet explained, not sugar coating it but telling him the truth, but still trying to be tactful.
"She made the right choice." Buddy concluded.
"She did." Violet nodded, proud of him for seeing that too.
"But the biggest difference is, her relationship with you was built on genuine, mutual respect that grew from there. Phil's relationship with me isn't. It's built off of power and control and manipulation and secrets and lies on both sides and Phillip adores Invisigirl and Ms. Parr -which is what his own fantasy of who I am is- that I have to live up to whether it's real or not and it doesn't matter how much I like it or hate it, it's part of the performance and he's happy with the act and buys the performance over and over again and he's never bothered to get to know Violet, the real Violet anyway. But you have, so our relationship is built off of um, let's see…." Violet took a deep breath and sighed as she brought his hand into her lap to consider how nicely their fingers interlaced together as she once again was drawn to all the scars on his hand as she couldn't help but trace them as she searched her thoughts and feelings for a moment.
"I feel ours is built on genuine mutual respect, honesty, understanding, sympathy and empathy and kindness. Which all good relationships should have and be built on to begin with, no matter what kind of relationship it is. And it's why it works as well as it does. Even with our shared history." Violet honestly appraised as Buddy carefully considered her words and was elated that it was even that much.
"What do you think?" Violet posed as she turned to him and looked at him curiously.
"I agree. Even though I'm not all that respectable, I'm a…"
"Don't. Don't start down that self deprecating pity party of a path. You're better than that and it's not fair to the guy you are now. In the past you were misguided and self righteous and vengeful. And then Karma handed you your ass and you humbly took the beating. And it's what you did after and since- that's mattered and it's what you're doing now that matters the most and who you are in this moment that matters too. Especially to me. Forgive yourself for the rest. I know I have." Violet appraised as the two shared a meaningful look and just as Violet gave his lips a glance as Buddy did the same and was seriously considering kissing her, her eyes went wide and she withdrew and bolted a few steps from him.
"Spiders are waking up." Violet whispered as she did her best to look and act "natural" again but even Buddy could see, the Violet he adored, shrunk back and Ms. Parr stepped back into the fore, he saw it in her posture and body language and Buddy was once again filled with anger and resentment towards Phillip, for doing such a thing to her. She deserved better than to live in fear, even in her own private space. Which should be sacred.
"Well, it's about that time Mr. Pine, we should be heading back, thanks for all your help." Violet thanked him as she put the bag over her shoulder and held onto it tightly as Buddy got up and left with her again and even in her SUV, Violet stayed withdrawn and eerily quiet as Buddy drove them back to SEB and the whole way over Buddy just got more and more angry and resentful to Phillip.
Violet stowed her bag of clothes in Buddy's room, in the closet before she helped Buddy unload everything else from her SUV and it was almost enjoyable to see and feel them slipping back into such domestic tasks in an effortless tandem. Even as mundane as putting away groceries was. But even Buddy could tell that Violet stayed withdrawn as Ms. Parr had taken over fully again because there was a surgical precision to her movements. She was trying to get things done as quickly and thoroughly as she could. Just a step below rushing before Buddy simply stopped and held her hands.
"The spiders won't always be around." Buddy breathed.
"I know. It's hard to know when they'll go to sleep again." Violet answered, her words barely a whisper before she reluctantly pulled her hands from his with an apologetic look as she finished what she needed to.
"Thanks for today though, I'll see you in the morning Mr. Pine." Violet said as she put her shoes back on before she left and drove home and finished putting her mail away and broke down her boxes and put them in a closet where she kept spare boxes to ship things out and was grateful that the "spiders" in her own apartment had been put back to sleep before she got ready for bed, brushing her hair and braiding it so it wouldn't tangle in her sleep and when she went to bed, she thought over all the events of the day in her head and actually smiled softly in the darkness. Buddy had been amazing, all day, and for him to slip into 'boyfriend/husband' at the liquor store had been so natural for both of them. Had her wishing maybe someday...because she couldn't deny or dismiss the feelings she had started to develop for him. It had started off as just two birds in side by side cages, sharing a toy or two. And it developed and bloomed from there. Natalia had even said that she had always been surprised when her attachment to Buddy had seemingly grown overnight and how one day she was his employee, and the next, she was his everything in all things. And how that seemed for her to be the same. One day, he was an an enemy, the next- an obligation and objective, the day after, an acquaintance, the next day he was a friend, and the day after that it felt like he was so much more but she was so scared of putting any names or labels on any of it because she didn't want to try to force it into anything or cut it into shape before it could fully sprout. She was genuinely curious to see how much more this would develop and bloom, like a growing vine despite the concrete around it.
But there was the issue of his name. Buddy wasn't exactly the most romantic name to call out during the throws of passion, Bud was informal but not quite right, although all his friends called him Bud. Buddy was a little infantilizing. Buddy is what you called other little boys on the playground when you didn't know their names. Bart was too old. Barret could possibly work before she got her phone and looked up common nicknames for Bartholomew. Barty was ridiculous. Tolly was too much like Tali. So that left...Barly, possible, but maybe too similar to barley, the grain, Barret, kind of like the gun, but it was the only good alternative she could like. But she needed something other than dead give away pet names, like Honey, Darling, Baby, Sweetie, Handsome that kind of thing that Phillip would immediately flag and get jealous and suspicious over, but still something a little more intimate than 'Bud' . Something she could use that was special but not something that would make others look at her strangely if she started to use it. It would be good on Raid days to call him something to go with Violet or Vi. Violet still came to the conclusion that Barret was as good as it was going to get because Barret and Violet did go together. Maybe he had something he preferred? Maybe something to do with his middle name. Maybe. But for now, she just needed sleep.
Violet found herself walking through another very luxurious home like space, normally, such a thing would make her a little nervous but she wasn't because Buddy was with her and held her hand as he excitedly showed her everything and explained what was what. And she was dressed casually and happily walked around barefoot as the windows were open and there was a warm breeze and bright sunshine coming in from all the windows, most of which were open and she could almost hear the ocean and to see him so animated and excited as she showed it off made her happy that he was happy. And that's all that mattered.
"And this is the bedroom, it has the best views." Buddy insisted as he opened the double doors for her before he brought her into the space as Violet softly gasped. It was even prettier than any bedroom she had ever seen in any magazine.
"We need to check out the bed." Buddy immediately hopped up on the bed, his own bare feet sinking into the softness of the mattress and the covers as he held out his hand to beckon her before she stood up on it with him before he started to bounce which got her to laugh as she started bouncing too before the two of them were outright jumping and bouncing all over the bed, laughing their asses off before they happily fell down and crashed into the bed on their backs next to each other as their laughter eventually died down.
"So what do you think of the house?" Buddy asked as they rolled to face each other.
"I love it. Even if you had not designed and practically built it yourself, and even if we had just bought it, I would still love it." Violet insisted as the two scooted closer to each other until they were chest to chest with Buddy's hand softly stroking down her back and her side as Violet reached around him and scratched his back, dipping her hands under his shirt to scratch at his bare skin, which earned her an appreciative keen from him as he rolled over her slightly to one- pin her to the bed, two- give her more access to his back.
"Really? You're not just saying that?" Buddy asked.
"I mean every word of it. Honest. It's perfect, you did so good, I'm so proud of you." Violet cooed before he dipped her head and kissed her happily as she kissed him back with all she was worth as the two of them seemed to follow a familiar pattern and chain of events as they pulled down the covers down as they tried to bare the other before they were finally rejoined.
"I'm not hurting you or the baby am I?" Buddy asked as he palmed her belly which had barely bulged as he positioned himself over her and began stroking himself into her.
"No, you're not, you're fine, I'm just happy the house is done before they come." Violet reassured him as she pulled him to herself so she could feel more of his body weight anchoring her in all the ways she needed it to before he continued.
"Me too." Buddy cooed in her ear before he playfully bit it before blazing a trail from her ear down her neck to her shoulder as Violet keened and sighed happily, letting him do as he pleased as she was all too happy to receive his affections as he poured all the love he possessed into her as she did the same.

Alright, time to go into detail about why Huaxiu knows the languages he knows and why he’s where he is skills-wise with them. For funsies.
Tumblr media
Mandarin
Self-explanatory! It’s his “birth” language so of course it’s the one he knows best and first. As for the different dialects, he understands them a little but language changes so often and so quickly that it’s a bit hard to keep up with the ones in areas he doesn’t visit as often.
Mongolian and Cantonese
Both being languages that, not only are spoken in their respective countries (Mongolia and Hong Kong predominantly) but also in mainland China. So due to proximity, although China is, uh, huge, and the fact that they’re also versatile and spoken outside their respective countries is why they were the next ones he learned.
Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese
Hitting a few other hot spots along eastern Asia. Not much to say here other than that early on he really just focused on Asia-specific languages and then started to work his way west from there.
Greek and Persian/Farsi
Since these are languages that were spoken by older civilizations, ones that Huaxiu was around and alive for, these ended up being next. The reason they’re still so high up despite him having first learned them long ago is that there wasn’t as much change as there were with other older languages. Modern Greek changing very little in the last thousand years and it’s the same with Persian in that there hasn’t been any major changes since around 800 AD and still very similar to its older incarnations.
Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese
It’s funny because while the Asian languages had more of a personal connection, him moving further into the European section has more of a “alright, let’s hit the big ones here and be done with it.” These he has middling proficiency with but it helps that these are the heavy-hitter languages, ones that can get a lot of mileage from even outside their countries. It also helps that learning one romance language makes it easier to build onto and use to learn others.
English
The newest language he learned and so the one he’s weakest in. He just put it off, to be honest, the romance gang up above took a lot of time and energy. But again, his “weak” still means he’s had years and years of practice.
Turkish
There’s a reason this list is ranked by proficiency rather than just which was learned in what order and that’s because of this one. Turkish was actually one learned around the time after the Asian languages, and the reason being that big old thing we called the Ottoman Empire, but his grasp on it is not as good because it’s changed greatly over even just the last century, enough to where modern-day speakers would need translated versions to be able to read things written from back then. Of course, this is difficult for him to keep up with considering how time passes for him and so while he’s trying to catch up he still sometimes unintentionally falls into the antiquated way of speaking it.
Well that’s it. More detail than needed? Probably, but that’s my modus operandi. And since I’m always fond of citing my sources, here (https://effectivelanguagelearning.com/language-guide/) is the site I used for some of my research on specific languages, how prevalent they are around the world, and some of their history. Just in case it’s ever useful to someone else trying to do language stuff, for muses or otherwise.

Translating Spanish needs localising even if the business is already operating in a Spanish-speaking market so that communication is not hindered. It is this activating dimension of popular free radio that most distinguishes it from the usual pacifying operations of the mass media and that also posed the greatest threat to the authorities; if people were just sitting at home listening to strange political broadcasts, or being urged to participate in conventional, organised political actions such as demonstrations that would be tolerable but once you start mobilising a massive and unpredictable political affectivity and subjectivation that is autonomous, self-referential and self-reinforcing, then this is a cause for panic on the part of the forces of social order, as was amply demonstrated in Bologna in 1977.

Old English, sometimes known as Anglo Saxon, is a precursor of the Modern English language. I know that for studying Ancient Near Eastern studies, eventually you would have to have a good command of French and German because a lot of the scholarly material is written in those languages. I have heard foreign-language speaking people talk about thinking in their native language before they translate. Veritas Language Solutions is going insolvent and I doubt any of the translators will receive money once higher ranking creditors have been paid. What I'm saying is, instead of trying to figure out which existing translation is most accurate, one can learn the languages, and of course the history, and do their own translation. Another thing, translating English to Arabic may have "corny" results i.e. the sentence may sound poetic with a deep meaning in English but very silly & childish in Arabic.
Zanos died of ovarian cancer just a couple of days of her 60th birthday. When we received the copy, there was no context at all, just the slogan and this sentence: Is it possible to have a few words translated into Spanish by Monday?,” followed by a request that we also translate the word small.
To support my argument, I will present several examples of the current media environments and personal experience, particularly in relation to music and music industries since music is one of the important mass cultural forms, representing current trends of peoples' mind and thinking. Without his work in the 1950s and '60s, there would be no field of study that sought to explain how the nuances and great sweeps of human history are made possible by media of communication—how media determine the thoughts and actions of people and society, in a soft” way. We know about it because we were at least, up to the coming of the Social Networks, reading books, listen to all types of different genre and good music and that has kept us as a "Sane Society' in this day and age. Then, tickled by curiosity, he read it and at the same time compared it with the previous translations. So long as Man Mind has existed, from the crude forms of mass mobilization to contemporary Meida technological mind control, it has always been the desire and aim of those who are rich, and have time to fine-tune and fine-chissel their distorted and concocted strategy of mass control to set and determine the final outcome, social arrangements and reality.

Top Benefits of Learning Spanish Start Learning Spanish Right From Your Home
Tumblr media
What are the benefits of learning Spanish? Well, learning a new language, like Spanish, is a good idea for a handful of reasons: you can increase your chances of being able to work from anywhere in the world, more easily meet and date folks in countries where most people don’t speak your native language and maybe even get to travel the world for free.
Each language comes with its own pros and cons. Some, like English, are spoken widely throughout the world, making it incredibly beneficial. Others, like Paakantyi, are only still spoken by a handful of people, but allow learners to be one of the sole speakers maintaining its existence.
BEST SPANISH AFFORDABLE SPANISH COURSE AVAILABLE
The benefits of learning Spanish are plentiful. But for the sake of brevity, we’ll only include the nine most major ones.
Start Learning Spanish Now Here
9 Major Benefits of Learning Spanish
1. One of the best languages to learn for travel
As of 2016, there were 437 million Spanish-speakers throughout the world. That’s 17% of the entire world. Not only does this heft number make Spanish the second most-spoken language in the world, but it is also the official or national language of 21 countries. In the Americas, 418 million people speak it, and in the European Union, 8% of folks speak it as a first language, and 7% speak it as a second language. The point of all of these fancy facts and figures is that if you learn Spanish, you’ll be hard-pressed to go somewhere where at least a few people don’t speak it. This will make you a better-equipped traveler, allow you to meet even more people and enrich your personal experiences.
Plus, you’ll be able to speak like a pro in some of the most beautiful countries in the world where Spanish is the official language:
Argentina
Colombia
Mexico
Peru
Panama
Costa Rica

2. Learning Spanish makes you more employable Yes, you read that correctly. Learning Spanish makes you more employable. At this point, we’re sure this isn’t surprising. Spanish is one of the six official languages of the United Nations, and the third most-used language in the media. The importance of Spanish as a business language is hard to dispute. With the economic development of many Latin American countries, Spain being the 14th highest for GDP in the world and an influx of Spanish-speakers in countries like the United States, anyone who knows, or learns, Spanish will be at a great disadvantage. According to The Economist, learning Spanish will net you an additional $51,000 in life. Oh, did we also mention that 10% of the language used on the Internet is in Spanish?
3. It’ll keep your mind sharp According to Alzheimer’s Today, “Speaking more than one language appears to help the brain resist the effects of Alzheimer’s disease.” Italy’s Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan conducted a study in which they studied CT scans of 85 older patients with Alzheimer’s disease. 45 of them spoke both German and Italian and 40 spoke only one of the two languages. As you can imagine, those who were bilingual performed better than monolingual speakers on short and long-term memory tasks. In fact, they scored three to eight times higher despite their brain scans showing more severe deterioration!
Tumblr media
4. You’ll become a better person Okay, we know this is a bold claim, but it’s true. At least, it’s true if you define being a better person as someone who is empathetic towards others and can read social cues. Learning another language, like Spanish, won’t only increase your ability to focus, but it will also help you understand cultures that are unlike your own. According to NPR, “bilingual children as young as age 3 have demonstrated a head start on tests of perspective-taking and theory of mind — both of which are fundamental social and emotional skills.
”5. A world of art, literature and beauty will open up to you One of the most major benefits of learning Spanish is that you’ll gain access to the unparalleled world of rich Hispanic culture. Watching classic movies, like Pan’s Labyrinth, in their natural language is more enjoyable than watching with subtitles. The same goes for reading literary heavyweights, like Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Pablo Neruda, in the way that they originally wrote their books. Engaging with works in their original language provides you with deeper insights into them than you can access through translations. And while art may not have an exact language, being able to speak Spanish may help you better enter the mind of Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali and many others. The same extends to music of the greats, like Gloria Estefan, Celia Cruz and Tito Puente.
6. Get a better handle on pop culture
In the same way that learning Spanish will give you access to classic literature, cinema, art and music, it will also open worlds to the the most dynamic and vibrant pop talent of today. If you’ve been to a club or bar in the last five years, it’d be difficult to hit the dance floor without shaking your hips to a song by Pitbull, Enrique Iglesias, Ricky Martin, Shakira or any other top Spanish-speaking musician. And aside from the dance floor, Spanish has entered the modern vernacular of many large brands and restaurants like Taco Bell’s famous saying of, “Yo quiero Taco Bell,” or McDonalds’ “Me encanta.” Other brands, like Walmart, are spending millions of dollars every year targeting Hispanic audiences. Whether you want to work for one of these organizations, or just be in the know when you see an ad in Spanish pop up, learning Spanish will help you get there.
Tumblr media
7. It won’t take you too long
Now, how long it takes you to learn Spanish is entirely dependent on who you are, how you study and if you’ve studied it, or a similar language before. According to the American Council of Teaching Foreign Language (ACTFL), languages are divided into two classes:
Group I: Spanish, French, Portuguese, among others
Group IV: Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and Korean
The languages in Group I, which include Spanish, take 480 hours of professional curriculum to achieve mid-advanced fluency. It’s important to remember here that how one defines “fluency” is entirely subjective. Some folks say they’re fluent in a language if they can read and write without a dictionary. Others claim that true fluency is impossible because it’d take a lifetime to understand all of the cultural idiosyncrasies if you didn’t grow up in it. Either way, Spanish is widely regarded as one of the easiest languages to learn, so you can be up and running with basic reading and speaking skills in no time.
Tumblr media
8. Slang will become a way of life
With 437 million Spanish-speakers in the world, it’d be crazy to think they all speak Spanish in the same way. Some people, like in Spain, speak Spanish with a lisp. Others, like in Argentina, shorten words (e.g. tranquilo, for calm, to tranqui) down and some people speak a Spanish creole, like in the Dominican Republic, that’s difficult for native Spanish speakers from other countries to understand. According to Wikipedia, Hispanic American Spanish can be grouped into:
Mexican
Central American
Caribbean (Cuba, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Panama, Caribbean Colombia and Caribbean Mexico)
Andean-Pacific (Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, West Bolivian, and Andean Venezuela).
Rioplatense (Argentina, Uruguay, East Bolivian and Paraguay)
Chilean (Chile, Cuyo)
Within European Spanish (Spain), there are also a handful of dialects:
Northern Peninsular (Asturias, Castilla y León, Cantabria, Basque country, Navarre, Aragón, Rioja, Provinces of Guadalajara and Cuenca)
Central-Southern Peninsular (Madrid, Toledo, La Mancha)
Southern Peninsular (Andalusia, Extremadura, and Murcia)
Canarian (Canary Islands)
Despite all of these dialects, most educated people will be able to understand one another regardless of which Spanish-speaking country they’re from. Standard usage of formal Spanish in Hollywood and many forms of literature helps to create a standard version that most people understand. But, on the flip side, all of this diversity can help anyone become a master in cross-cultural slang. Each dialect and Spanish-speaking region comes with their own sets of idioms and unique cultural differentiators, which makes learning Spanish fun and engaging. The number of ways you’ll be able to express yourself will be endless.
9. More chances to fall in love
One of the benefits of learning Spanish or any language is that you’ll widen your pool of romantic prospects. We live in a world where the number of Spanish-speaking people is only growing. Those who don’t attempt to learn even a little put themselves at a romantic disadvantage. How amazing would it be to travel to another country and connect with others in their own languages, versus hoping they speak your own? Learning a new language naturally enriches your life, and gives you the opportunity to meet people whom you’d never be able to communicate with before. It is a gift, and something you shouldn’t deprive yourself of.

Booster Theme: The Best Theme For Your Shopify Store | Review 2020
Tumblr media
E-commerce is booming in the world right now. Thousands of marketers are trying to make the most out of their business through this sector. However, when it comes to run a thriving e-commerce landscape, the website theme plays an exceptional character. It should get designed according to the best UX/UI metrics.
Everybody of us knows about Shopify and has also witnessed its enormous contribution to the e-commerce panorama. There are tons of themes available for designing an online Shopify store. But, the best I have seen is the Shopify booster theme. And the online platform that can help you to grab the best nuances of this Shopify theme is the Booster Theme. Yes, this company named after this premium theme.
Booster Theme got started by Justin B. and Mark L. in Montreal, Canada, in the year 2016. According to them, they are backing approx 6700 Shopify stores presently. Besides, they have observed an increment of 57.3% in the conversion rate of those Shopify stores, which are making use of their Booster theme. And, as per their analytics, this theme is 2.1 times faster than other regular Shopify themes.
In this booster theme review post, we’ll discuss everything about the it, including its features, advantages, disadvantages, pricing details, and more.
Booster Theme Review
The overall performance of an e-commerce website depends on many factors. Amongst those, specific product descriptions, web page snippets, and convincing aesthetics play a substantial role. However, parameters like website loading speed and an authentic website landscape are also something you cannot overlook.
For your information, Booster Theme possesses all these very characteristics that your Shopify store should have. Also, if you select a booster theme above other themes, then you don’t have to create a number of complicated java scripts. Because, in this, you get access to various in-build functions, where there is no need to install numerous applications. That, of course, adds more to the website loading speed and indirectly to the high conversion rates.
There’s much more that you can enjoy by using this premium Shopify theme. So, to know more profound insights about the Booster theme, let’s first see some top properties of it.
Top Functions of Booster Theme-
 Upgraded Product Pages:
Booster Theme is potentially known for playing with the aesthetics of their product pages. They always try to add more features and credibility to the product pages. So that, optimize the sales process more and more. Recently, in their Booster 3.0 updated version, they have introduced two new product page designs. First is Marketplace, while the other is Standard.
By making use of these two new product page layouts, you can showcase your products in a better way, in front of viewers. Resultantly, motivate your customers more in order to make a purchase.
Excellent Multilingual Support:
Tumblr media
It’s one of the prominent features of booster Theme. In the case of most of the Shopify stores, multilingual support does not go beyond more than two languages, at maximum. Whereas, Booster Theme provides multilingual support in the following ten languages-
1. Spanish.
2. Dutch.
3. Italian.
4. German.
5. English.
6. Portuguese (For Portugal).
7. Portuguese (For Brazil).
8. Japanese.
9. French
10. Danish.
As a result, you can seamlessly market your products in any of the following languages. And to the people who belong to any of the mentioned countries.
Perfectly Optimized For Mobile Users:
According to statistics, about 2 billion people do online shopping on their mobile phones. And at least 95% of people go for online research about products on mobile devices finally before making a purchase.
That’s why mobile optimization is a must for your online Shopify store. Thus, buyers don’t come across any trouble if they access your Shopify store on their mobile phones.
However, the booster theme got designed perfectly according to the mobile optimization parameter. Here, I’m not saying this only regarding the design and layout of the booster theme. But, I’m also talking about the other significant elements of your e-commerce website like product name, description, cart options, and more. That will appear amazingly on your Shopify store if you make use of a booster theme.
Enhanced Cart Page Functionalities:
Tumblr media
The cart page plays a crucial role in the seamless interface of an e-commerce platform. Although, many times, it has seen that many e-commerce marketers don’t make use of cart page on their shopping website. It might be because they think the absence of a cart page can fasten their sales process. Well, it can be, but the use of the cart page can also increase your sales revenue if things get done with proper marketing.
If product copy and urgency snippets of your website are immeasurable, then it can happen that customers will add multiple products to your cart. But, if there will be no cart page, how they do this. That’s why an optimized cart page is necessary for your e-commerce panorama.
However, the booster theme provides you with a fully enhanced functional cart page for your Shopify store. That will increase your sales conversion rate to another level altogether.
Integrated Sales Pop-ups:
It’s a fact till the time you don’t have exceptional products to offer to people, you have to take your website appearance factors seriously. And that precisely what booster theme ensures.
I am not saying that after your e-commerce platform becomes successful, it doesn’t matter how your website looks. Of course, it matters, but not that much when you have just barely started your e-commerce career.
You might be wondering what these fake sales pop-ups mean. Let’s understand with an example, how this feature of booster theme can help your Shopify store.
How many of you prefer shopping from a store that’s completely new and also has no sales references? I am sure no one. Most of us buy things from popular shops only, which also recommended by many people.
That is what precisely happens in the matter of online Shopify stores. In case if it does not look convincing enough and busy with elements like sales pop-ups, product recommendations, and sales offers. Then, people may not take your website seriously and come out of it without making any purchase.
So, the presence of fake sales pop-ups creates urgency amongst visitors, moreover pushes them to give your products at least a try. Shopify booster theme 3.0 update integrate this feature amazingly with Shopify stores and make your e-commerce platform looks trustworthy.
However, in the case of other themes, for integrating this feature, you have to install various applications that cost thousands of bucks.
Visitor Count Display Frame :
It is another one of the best features you can access via a booster theme. In accordance with the visitor counter, customers get to see a fake visitor count on your website. That will tell them how many people are online at the store at that point in time.
Confused? How is it going to help you?
Let’s assume that you are buying a product from an e-commerce website. But, suddenly, you glanced at the visitor count that shows 60 visitors are active right now looking for the same product.
So, in this situation, would you afford not to buy that product? It will definitely create a feeling of urgency inside you and motivate you to purchase that product at the very moment.
That’s it!
Incorporation of Geo IP Currency Converter:
Tumblr media
GEO IP currency converter is one of the most crucial elements for an e-commerce platform. With the help of this converter, people get to see the expenses in their native currency type. It helps them to estimate how much money they are going to spend on your Shopify store.
Most of the e-commerce platforms make use of currency converter applications on their website. That adds more pressure on their bank balance as well as make their site look cluttered and decreases the website loading speed.
However, with the premium Shopify theme like the booster, you can get it right there on your website, without paying separately for the currency converter applications.
Easy To Customize Exit Intent Pop-ups:
Exit-intent pop-ups are meant to be a very relevant overlay regarding higher conversion rates. Because, when visitors try to navigate away from your website, it helps hold on to visitors for more time by offering special offers.
That’s why your exit intent pop-up must have all the convincing elements. I can assure you that with the booster theme, you can develop compelling exit pop-ups. So that, it would become near impossible for visitors to ignore them.
So, whenever people try to leave your product page, they will get to see an exit pop-up with captivating discount offers.
Promotional Countdown Timer Setting:
As, I have already mentioned above that how a sense of urgency creates adrenaline rush inside buyers and motivates them to purchase at the same point.
That’s why features related to this sort of selling, such as promotion counter timer, play an extraordinary role when it comes to marketing products.
Most of the time, promotional counter timers don’t execute with the right planning. As a result, people get indicated that they are fake timers and implemented only for increasing sales.
Therefore, the use of promo countdown timers should be done carefully. And for that, most importantly, you shouldn’t implement them in all your products, but only on some of the chosen products.
If you go for buying promo countdown timers separately, you will have to spend a massive amount of money. But, in booster theme, you can get them without spending a dime.
Other Related Products Section:
Tumblr media
Booster theme’s this attribute will help buyers in finding relevant products on your Shopify store. Without spending much time searching for products, through this feature, they can look for a variety of similar products.
By using booster them, you can make sure that your visitors get to see a section of other related products at the bottom of different product pages. Because, you also know that not many people opt for the “Add to cart” option always.
That’s why this feature can tempt people’s attention towards your other similar products and might will make them buy those products.
Directly To the Checkout Page:
As a matter of fact, e-commerce sales funnels, which consist of less possibility of distractions, ends in higher conversions. Therefore, the inclusion of too many cart pages in between the sales funnel can make your prospects lose interest in your products.
So, the option of a direct checkout page can help you big time. How?
According to the direct checkout characteristic of the Shopify stores, buyers would not become distracted, as they will end the sales process directly by landing on the checkout page.
With the help of the booster theme, you can access this feature right there free of cost. However, in most of the other Shopify themes, this attribute can only get accessed by paid applications.
Clarity Between Shopping Offers And Call-to-action:
Free+shipping offers have become very commonplace in businesses for persuading customers to take emotive purchasing decisions. However, the ineffective use of this business strategy can also lower your conversation rates. How?
As we all understand, people love to buy things free of cost. Although, due to the advancement in social media platforms, human reach to information has increased. Due to that, they have heard various scams about free stuff.
Consequently, with time, they have become a little more careful when it comes to these free shipping offers. That’s why the use of free+shipping offers also pushes customers to see you with a quite skeptical vision. Because, anybody would feel why you’re selling stuff free of cost.
However, the main motive of marketers behind this selling method is to provide products cheaply. So that, they always able to generate small and stable profits. But, as I mentioned above, due to the skeptical nature, this business selling can also lower your conversion rate.
In the booster theme, you can access advanced free+shipping customizable pages and make sure that visitors able to comprehend the differences between shopping offers and call-to-action.
Upsell And Cross-sell Notifications:
Tumblr media
Here’s another advantageous e-commerce trait you make use of by one and only booster theme. Through upsell and cross-sell pop-ups, buyers get to see notifications about products on the basis of various functionalities. Some of them are similarities, discount offers, features, and more.
Tumblr media
However, these notifications generally displayed after when customers click the “Add to cart” option. Booster theme provides this feature for free of cost. But, in other Shopify themes, you have to spend about $588 annually to acquire these two attributes.
Ease While Updating Theme:
All the Shopify themes, paid or free, demands updation. And for that, you have to re-download that theme from the beginning, which is really a time-taking process.
However, in the booster theme, you get an application called booster updater app, through which you can surpass this time-taking updation procedure in no time. So, with booster theme, updation is not more daunting!
Pricing Insights Of Booster Theme-
Tumblr media
Booster theme comes with three different pricing packages-
1. Single store license- $179
2. Two stores license- $297
3. Five stores license- $497
If you are a starter in the e-commerce field and going to open a completely new Shopify store, then I would suggest you purchase a single store license package. Later on, you can upgrade your single store license to two stores license at a $297 price. And if you are doing so, then you only have to pay an extra sum of money. Like, in a single store plan, you were paying $179, and now you’re upgrading it to two stores license, so you only have to invest $118.
No matter whichever license package you’re using, you will get one-year free update support with Booster Theme. But, after completion of one year, you have to pay $97 annually to renew your store license. It is valid in case of all three pricing packages of this premium theme.
Pros and Cons Of The Booster Theme-
 Pros-
Upgraded Product Pages.
Incorporation of Geo IP Currency Converter.
Visitor Count Display Frame.
Easy To Customize Exit Intent Pop-ups.
Promotional Countdown Timer Setting.
Directly To the Checkout Page.
Other Related Products Section.
Clarity Between Shopping Offers And Call-to-action.
Upsell And Cross-sell Notifications.
Ease While Updating Theme.
Cons-
It’s a bit expensive.
Final Thoughts-
According to me, considering everything, the Shopify booster theme is one of the best premium themes. You can use it to generate a higher conversion rate for your Shopify store.
As, I wrote above, yes, this theme is a bit on the expensive side. But, if you have adequate money to invest and if you really want to kick start your dropshipping business, then there’s nothing better than Booster theme. Go and buy it as early as possible!
If you people have something more to share about the Shopify booster theme, so please comment in the section below.
