i took my brother to see bleak expectations in london and first of all if any of you know what that is then i am giving you a kiss on the forehead
second of all it was amazing and tom allen was the narrator and he's genuinely so fucking funny
both my brother and i know the radio show very well, we listened to it a lot when we were kids
however seeing this play made my brother realise that hyperfixations and special interests are very different
i (autistic with adhd) can tell you the entire story from ep1s1 to ep6s5 and i knew exactly which lines from the show were in the play and the relevance of tom allen wearing pink trousers and from which season and episode the plot points came from because it didn't stick to the canon
my brother (adhd)... just likes the show. he isn't a little bit insane about it. he gets obsessed with things for like a month at the most and then moves on. he looked at me like i should be Put Somewhere Safe, Away From People

HI so I ABSOLUTELY LOVE your podcast and I listened to Wooden Overcoats because I heard you recommend it and now i absolutely love Wooden Overcoats!!! (Both finales had me making excited screaming noises and walking around in circles in my room while i liveblogged them to my girlfriend)
Do you have other recommendations in a similar vein?
Oh my goodness, sorry for the delay on this but YAY Wooden Overcoats! It's an absolute all-time fave of ours and needless to say there was much screaming in our household as well. Would die for Antigone Funn tbh.
As far as recs go, have you listened to Victoriocity? It's an alternate-Victorian-London mystery/comedy, and Tom Crowley (Eric Chapman from Wooden Overcoats) plays one of the leads. The theme song is so dramatic and catchy, it's got really snappy dialogue like Wooden Overcoats, the voice acting is across the board excellent, and we would die for Clara Entwhistle.
Some other recs, in case you haven't already checked these out:
Death by Dying: Super dark comedy about an obituary writer in a very odd town--some of our hardest laughs in any audio drama and a show that our writers quote on the DAILY
Wolf 359 and EOS10: Likely you've already listened to one or the other at this point, they're classics for a reason, but just in case you haven't--do it! These were two of our first intros to audio fiction and have been SUPER formative in teaching us how to write comedy and drama for the medium. Really great comedies that also do a fantastic job of sneakily getting you to care about the characters SO much.
Midnight Burger: Look, this show frickin rocks. Tight writing, incredibly clear character writing, just arrives from minute one with such a strong sense of tone and identity. If you like our show's vague Doctor Who vibes, there is literally no way you won't love the crew of Midnight Burger.
Mockery Manor: More of a mystery than outright comedy vibe, but the MUSIC! The SOUND DESIGN! The SETTING! It's a murder-mystery 80s show set at a theme park in the UK, with jingles left and right. We did in fact buy the soundtrack the day it became available, it's bangers beginning to end.
Brimstone Valley Mall: Speaking of music! A 90s comedy about a group of demons who work in a shopping mall and have a band. This ensemble is a frickin delight and we love a Hot Topic joke.
Two Flat Earthers Kidnap a Freemason: Full disclosure, our producer/Narrator, Lauren, is a voice actor on this, but we think if you like the satire of our show and our particular brand of morally grey protagonists, this one will be right up your alley. We'd tell you the plot but...it's kinda right there in the title, innit?
BONUS: If you have Audible or want to do some creative searching, we also highly recommend the BBC radio shows Bleak Expectations and Cabin Pressure--both incredibly funny and well-made audio sitcoms! These two shows were our gateway into audio fiction and remain the gold standard in our mind for comedy scripts that boast a frankly ridiculous joke-per-minute ratio.
We will likely add on shows from here as we think of them, but hopefully this gets you started with something that sounds fun!

This book is BLEAK! Honestly, this book is well written, I just gave it two stars because it set off ALL of my triggers. When I tell you I had to pause the audio book to process what I was listening to on multiple occasions. . . Ooof. From start to finish this book is bleak, there are times when a sliver of hope will sneak in but I promise you, there is no happy ending here. Have you read this book? Did you cry for the puppies? What would you have have done in times like this? It took me three days to shake the pit in my stomach after finishing this book. Idk man, B L E A K.

Has anyone made a fic
where when exposed to pale, Kim meets an old version of himself, like 90.
“Well there’s a fine young man,” he says kindly, a spark of mischief in his dark eyes that’s decades younger.
Old Kim is completely unbothered by current Kim’s presence, takes it in stride to see a ghost of the past standing in his living room. But aside from the time travel, young Kim is dumbfounded at how they’d lived so long.
“70 was our goal, wasn’t it?” Kim accepts the offered tea. “Not bad.”
Turns out that Harry lived almost as long. Kim is shocked (on his liver??), then of course saddened at the thought that he ends up alone, sitting on a garish couch that has Harrier’s unique taste written all over it.
Old Kim waves him off with a chuckle. “Alone? I rarely get peace. The kids visit every day, now, and grandkids every weekend.“
Kim’s breath catches in his throat. It’s…more than he’s ever dared to dream.
“Besides. Harry’s around here someplace, I’m sure.”
Oh. Well maybe he isn’t as sharp as first perceived.
Old Kim smiles conspiratorially. “He isn’t moving on without me. We hardly spent a day apart for 45 years. When it’s time, he insists we go together.” Shakes his head. “Most stubborn man in the world.” He says it with the utmost fondness.
This doesn’t line up with Kim’s view of reality, but he can see the other is serious…and content. “Is this all a hallucination?”
The older man breaks into a brilliant smile, a map of wrinkles on a lovingly weathered face. “The world is stranger and more wondrous than you know, Kim. And you are going to be happy.”

i do like berserk as a whole, but i'll be honest, part of me does sort of wish that the series had started and ended just with golden age. there is a reason why this part of the story is the most well known and it's not just because it's the one that got the most adaptations; it's because it just stands so well on its own. if you watch the movies or even the 1997 anime, infamous for its abrupt ending, you do get a complete, self-contained, coherent story - a complete tragedy, yes, but complete nonetheless. and given how we will never truly get the full, unadulterated ending miura had planned for the series, despite his crew's best efforts in completing what's left of it with what they have, i think that really means something

Ok this is random as hell but I’ve seen you mention both cabin pressure and bleak expectations (iirc?) so now I’m curious… are there any other radio comedies you’ve listened to?
I grew up listening to bbc radio 4 comedies so it’s exciting to see other people who know them :)
Ohh that is a very good question.
I used to really love "double income, no kids yet" with David Tennant as one of the leads. But i think thats it. I have listened to some stray dramatisations of sherlock holmes as well but i cant really remember what those were called and if they were BBC or not. But if you have any succestions for me then i am all ears!! Thank you for your ask <3
