You had been blasting the heat pump in your car to work, as temperatures were a measly 20 degrees (farenheit) in the city it was one of the coldest days so far this winter. And winter had only just began. You had on one of your thickest jumpers, and a woolen jacket on top of that and it was barely enough to keep the cold out. When you parked the car in the diner car park you sighed as you contemplated risking your job so that you could stay warm. A tap on the window has you rethinking that as you see the friendly smile of your boyfriend and co-worker, Bo, was standing there holding out a puffer jacket and waiting for you to step out of the car. You quickly gathered your things together and pulled the keys out of the ignition before jumping out and into Bo’s arms

“Hey there sweetcheeks, thought you might be needing this” he says as he wraps the puffer jacket around you as he pulls you into his arms and holds you as close to him as possible, you feel his body heat radiating through you and it wards off the chill.

“Hey Bo, thanks for meeting me out here” you say placing a kiss on his cheek

“Your very welcome, lets get you inside huh?” he suggests and you nod, grateful for this adorably caring man.

Dumplin' is one of those books where I feel woefully unqualified to write a review. How can I possibly do justice to the brilliant, sweet, heart-wrenching and, ultimately, triumphant book that is Dumplin? Julie Murphy has created a cast of characters that are so real and well-developed that I often felt they could walk right off the page. Every character is shown as being multi-faceted. Ever. Single. One. I loved watching their hidden sides emerge alongside Willowdean, especially the girls who joined the pageant with her. Aunt Lucy plays a fantastic role, even though she has passed on before the events of the book, and it is heartbreaking to watch Will struggle to find her place in the world without Aunt Lucy in her corner. This plays into the incredibly realistic relationship that she has with her mother, and while it is clear that they love each other, neither seems to quite understand the other.

Willowdean herself has a tough and confident exterior, but the author does a phenomenal job of showing how even girls that appear to have it all together can have crippling insecurities. Throughout the novel we watch Will as she fights her own demons and struggles against the messages that the world is constantly pushing at her; that she isn't good enough, that she should be ashamed of her body, that someone her size doesn't deserve happiness. Sometimes she falters, which makes this novel all the more relatable, but she gets back up again and comes out stronger than before.

Dumplin' features a not-so-typical romance between Will and Bo - the last guy she ever expected to be interested in her. There is a touch of a triangle, as another suitor tries to garner her affection, but it never actually ventures into the been-there-read-that territory of the literary trope. The reader is never quite sure of Bo's intentions and, for most of the novel, we get wrapped up in the mystery of him right alongside Willowdean. It is heartbreaking to watch (but oh so relatable) as Will stiffens at his touch and wonders if she is good enough or if he is being honest.

Dumplin' is not just a story about a self-proclaimed fat girl finding her place in the spotlight. It runs deeper than that. Through Willowdean's internal struggle and the revelations of the other girls in the pageant, we see how everyone suffers with insecurities, no matter their shape or size. The overwhelming message, however, is that we not allow the internal monologue of "not good enough" to hold you back from wonderful and important life experiences.

Bottom Line: Dumplin is a book that I would recommend to anyone and especially one that all teenagers should read. It now sits on a special shelf in my classroom (at least it would if it wasn't being read so often!)

Since I’ve been reducing my caffeine intake the past few months, I let Bo’s Coffee’s Iced Chocolate to accompany me instead while studying for my third comprehensive exam. My friends and I planned to meet on Friday but I have a test on Saturday (which I already took yesterday and I’m so drained as I spent 4 hours answering 100 MCQs and a 3-question essay), so what I did was I started studying on Monday, finishing handout after handout just so I can allow myself to see my friends.

Then, I found this denim skirt sitting idle in my drawer. It was so cute that I had to pull it out. I bought it at a thrift shop eons ago so I can’t really remember how much it was. I was even surprised to have a skirt in the first place since I don’t usually wear them.

Meeting at Megamall, we watched Captain Marvel. Prior to the movie release, I never watched any teasers or trailers at all because I wasn’t exactly looking forward to it. I was thinking that the actress (Brie Larson) didn’t have a superhero vibe to her unlike other female marvel actresses and I feel bad for having thoughts like that that I began convincing myself that maybe it was intentional not to make her standout and that you’ll need to watch the movie to see why she’s was chosen for the role. And I’m glad I did. I wasn’t expecting anything but it went beyond than I imagined, and it was good.

After the movie, we ate at Garosu, a Korean/Japanese pub resto. I didn’t eat any rice meals during the day so I was hungry even after having chicken burger and popcorn during the movie that I forgot it was Friday and that I had to fast on meat. But anyways, I enjoyed the food, most especially the spontaneity of the conversation. One of my friends is going back to the province since her month-long training ended so we had to say goodbye. We can’t say for sure when we will be able to meet again so everyone went out of their way just so we can see each other before she leaves.

willowdean had spent some time imagining what he’d taste like, and then she’d spent a great deal of time kissing him, and then more time regretting it, and then she’d gone back to enjoying it again. there’s had not been a relationship with out hitches. but they were going strong. maybe that’s what happened when you grew up to be in a relationship, you met somewhere in the middle instead of just bending to be the kinda person you thought the other wanted you to be.

so when they stretched out in the back of his truck, pulled into the old parking lot by his old elementary school like they’d done that summer in secret -- she was content. the blankets beneath them scratchy, but comforting all the same. and for once she was beginning to really let herself think about the future.

one of those damned suckers was keeping his mouth occupied, he seemed content, preoccupied as he chewed on the stick -- arm around her waist as she laid on her side against him. a pause as she shifted, just a touch closer. fingers brushing along his arm as her hand found his. fingers slipping through his, a content hum from her generally silent beau.

his eyes seemed to half drift shut, and she followed his example. a soft sigh as she listened to the sounds of the summer night. moving closer again, she nuzzled against the nape of his neck. she did have a softness for that spot where his hair grew right there, she’d spent many an hour staring at the back of his neck so maybe that was why she was so fond of it... but regardless, she found herself leaning over to just brush a kiss to that oh so favored spot.

an eyebrow raised as he turned to look at her, eyes meeting in the starlight --- ‘ what --- i was just checking to see if you tasted good everywhere bo larson. because your lips are cherry red and dirty liars --...’ she paused before clearing her throat, ‘ and just if you’re curious you have so far tasted good everywhere i have sampled. ‘

You sighed as you closed the boot of the car, after putting the last of your bags in your car. Today was a hard day for you as it was the day you were leaving for university, across the state to New York were you had been accepted into Juilliard in their Dance program, having done nothing but dance at one of the top schools in Texas since you were 2 years old and sending a most impressive audition tape through, you had been accepted into the Bachelor of Fine Arts. Dance had been your passion and your whole world since you were able to move and so it had seemed only fitting that you set your goals on such a prestigeous school. Something that your family and your boyfriend had been incredibly proud of. Bo Larson, had been to every single one of your dance recitals, dance rehearsals and anything else dance related he could make it to or attend since you had started dating back in eighth grade. Your parents had been very strict on Bo when you’d first started dating but when he’d shown up to your first couple of recitals and competitions they had seen how committed to you he was and had become a bit more lenient on your relationship. But now, here you stood at the back of your car looking up at your boyfriend and you feel tears falling down your cheeks, he pulls you into his arms and reaches up, wiping your tears with his hand

“Baby girl, this isn’t goodbye, not if we can help it. Besides you’ll find your way back to me, I know you will” he whispers in your ear and you look up at him and give a small smile.

“I love you Bo”

“I love you too, Y/N, my sweet Y/N. Now go on, go show those other pupils all that amazing talent you have and knock them dead” he says and you chuckle, placing a kiss on his lips for the last time, as you begin the start of your relationship at long distance

“You can shine my sweet Y/N” Bo whispers to you as he waves to you from the curb as the car pulls out onto the road, your parents coming along for the ride so that your not making the journey by yourself. You wave until you turn out of your street, and then you hear a ping from your cell phone and look down to see a text message from Bo

Silently gushing to the other over babies they see in public. - Bo Larson x reader

You were at the counter in the middle of the diner, having been in conversation with your boyfriend of two years Bo Larson, you turn on the seat as you stare out at the window, as you see one of the girls from school. You had last seen about 4 or 5 months ago. She was holding in her arms a newborn baby, and it all of a sudden clicked in your mind why she had left.

“Babe, Ah was just wonderin’ if ya wanted fries with ya-” he pauses as he watches you looking at the young mum and her baby, the sweet look on your face, and he can’t help but smile a little. He knew how much you dotted on younger children, had seen how good you were with the younger girls in the pageant, and how you cared for the children you looked after at after school care. He knew one day you would make an amazing mum and he couldn’t wait to be the one to experience all of that with you.

“Babe, is there something ya want ta tell me?” he whispers in your ear and you jump. You hadn’t realised that he had gotten so close, how long had you been staring. You shake yourself and give your boyfriend your full attention

“Sorry bub, what were you saying?” you query.

“Was just wondering if ya wanted fries with your burger?” he asks and you nod your head, a deep blush on your cheeks at having been caught.

Dumplin – Bo Larson “I need a date for this new years party and you're the only reasonable person around”

You wring your hands together nervously as you make your way up to the grill, standing behind your immediate boss and supervisor. He barely even realises that your there, until you clear your throat and he turns around to look at you, his glance quickly looking out at the front of the store and when he sees that there only a couple of patrons sitting in the store he gives you his full attention

“What can I do for you Y/N?” he asks and you look down at the ground taking a deep breath before you look up and say

“I need a date for this new years party and you're the only reasonable person around” you say and he raises an eyebrow

“What about Gerald? Wasn't he the boy you were dating?” he asks, a hint of hurt in his voice and you sigh

“We broke up before winter break started” you say and his jaw drops

“I'm sorry” he says and you shake your head

“No your not” you say meeting his gaze and he's about to protest before he takes a step towards you and places a hand on your shoulder

“Ok, you're right. I'm not sorry. You've known how I've felt about you for a while now” he admits and you nod. It was true, you had known how Bo had felt about you for a while, almost eight months in fact and even though you had picked Gerald over Bo, your heart had never truly belonged to him, as it had always belonged to Bo, had done since the very first day you meet the college boy in your freshman year of high school. He takes another step towards you, the distance between you almost none existent now, and you can feel his breath against your cheek, feel the warmth of his body against yours and you shiver, he leans down, his right hand tilting your head up to cup your chin whilst his left arm winds its way around your waist, his gaze flickers from your eyes to your lips and back again and you let out a breath as he presses his lips against yours in the first of many kisses. When the kiss is broken he leans his forehead against yours and whispers

“I will go with you to this party, but on one condition” he says and you raise an eyebrow

“What condition?” you ask and he smiles at you

“You accept the fact that you're in love with me and you go as my girlfriend” he tells you and you think it over for mere seconds before you nod and grin as you place a gentle kiss against his lips

“Okay, let's do it” you say and he chuckles before he presses another kiss against your lips.

He stood there in front of you concern in his eyes as he cups your cheek in his palm, using his thumb to wipe away yet another tear. He was worried about you. Worried about how much hurt you had been through and how you never seemed to let anyone in.

“Y/N, I can help you but you've got to want to be helped. Is that what you want? To get better?” he asks and you look up into his gaze, seeing the concern and the love he had for you in his eyes. You don't break eye contact with him as you nod your head

“I want to get better Bo, for me and for us” you say and he smiles, leaning forward and places a kiss on his cheek

“I'm glad,” he says before he drops his hand from your cheek and laces his fingers with your own and walks you over to a park bench. The two of you were just talking, letting your walls down slowly but surely as the hours passed.

2019 Advent Ficlet Challenge - Day 15

Midnight – Bo Larson x reader

As you sit in the back of his pickup truck, the cold winters breeze blowing all around you catching the strands of your hair that had managed to escape from your ponytail and kept blowing in your face cause Bo to reach out and cup your cheeks in his hand

“I'm glad you decided to join me out here tonight Y/N” he says and you smile, it had been a while since you had seen your boyfriend since he was out of state for university and you were still at high school, a senior preparing yourself for your own journey but you couldn't imagine leaving your life behind, let alone your boyfriend.

“I'm glad you decided to come home for your two week break” you say and he smiles

“There's nowhere else I would rather be than spending my night with my truly beautiful girlfriend” he says as he leans in and places a kiss on your lips, which you eagerly respond to, having missed the feel of his lips against your own.

“I love you Bo” you whisper and he smiles as you hear the chime of the clock from the church signalling that it is a new day, midnight.

“I love you too Y/N,” he says as he captures your lips in a tender kiss, before you break away from the kiss and rest your head on his shoulder as you look up at the sky.

You were the last one at the diner, staring blankly ahead. Your date hadn't even bothered to turn up and it had made you feel worthless, it was the end to an incredibly bad day. You feel yourself breaking down and before you know it, the all too familiar face of the college boy whom you had had a crush on for the last couple of years was sitting in front of you as he took your hand

“Woah, are you ok?” he asks concern heavy in his voice, you blink shaking your head before you say

“Not really Bo”. He looks at you sympathetically before he hands you a napkin and a small smile

“I'm sorry they hurt you Y/N, whoever has caused you this pain doesn't deserve you” he says before getting up and leaving you. You nod, before wiping the tears from your face and making your way up to the counter to pay. You pull out your Eftpos card and Bo shakes his head

“No Y/N, your meals on me. Go home and get some rest okay?” he says and you're about to argue but you can tell from the look on his face that he's not going to listen to whatever argument you come up with so you just nod your head and leave. When you reach the door to exit the diner you turn around and say

“Thank you Bo” he pops his head around the corner and smiles at you

“Of course. I'll see you later Y/N” he says and you smile for the first time all evening.

As the two of you sat under the starry sky, you felt his arms wrap around your waist as he leans in closer sending a shiver down your spine as he whispers

“Stop being so cute” you turn to him and your breath hitches, you hadn't realised just how close his face was to yours at this time until you had turned. You bite your lip, sneaking a glance at his lips as he watches you and he says

“Jesus Y/N, you don't have any idea what you do to me do you?” you raise an eyebrow at him and his gaze drops down, you follow his gaze and gasp before a deep blush rises on your cheeks

“You're making me blush” you whisper and he chuckles

“And you're absolutely beautiful” he says and you place a kiss on his lips, it's slow and sensual, just what you need to alleviate some of the tension growing between the two of you

“And you my dearest Bo, are very handsome. I love you” you say and he beams, before crashing his lips against yours, more heated this time before he breathes against your lips

“I love you too sweetheart”.
