I'm thinking about Bryce Dallas Howard in Argylle. And how the whole movie, I kept thinking, "she looks like me." Elly Conway/Rachel Kylle is midsize. I'm midsize. I kept being struck by seeing a character who looked like me on screen, and god, if I was so surprised by it, I can't imagine what it's like to be fat and never see positive fat representation. Even just neutral fat representation. Elly's body is never discussed in the film (in contrast to a movie like Love Actually, for example, where Natalie's body is a constant topic of conversation for the other characters, to the point that they treat it as her defining trait). How many characters are out there, especially female characters, who get to be fat and not have it be the focus of their story?
The only one I can think of that comes close is Dumplin. And even in that movie, her weight isn't the primary conflict (it's not a weight loss story or anything like that), but her insecurity about it is still a source of tension that causes conflict between her and several other characters (Ellie, her mother, Bo).
I don't really know where I'm going with this. I like to think the body positivity and body neutrality movements have made a lot of progress since the heroin-chic days of the 90s and early 00s. But if it's still notable to me to see a midsize character in a major motion picture, maybe we haven't come as far as we think.

Once again watching dumplin' and watching Will stuggle with her self-destructive behaviors and pitting everyone against her because without Lucy she feels unworthy of love because of her body and poor relationship with her mother while also loved so fiercely by her best friends, and this guy that she views as unattainable(even though hes not!!! Hes very attainable!!) hits so hard its not even funny

I blame Billy Lenz from Black Christmas for making me fall for pathetic men. I blame Grace from Dumplin for being my awakening. I blame Marie-Joseph Sanson from Innocent and Innocent Rouge for falling in love with women that can possibly kill me. I blame those old 2017 genderbend artworks to leading me here today.

Fat character used to be skinny, old love interests no longer interested: 12 per
Any fucking movie like The Whale (2022): 16 per
A fat person is minding their business and is brought into the story because a character is making fun of them: 6 per

Bachelorette (2012): 10K per

Tumblr media
The Fat people episodes of procedurals (Bones and CSI): 28 per
Fat character is stalker because no one could possibly love them normally: 45 per
Fat character fucks, but is relationship averse (see any show 2019 onward): 1 per
This is the industries new way of saying sorry for the fat jokes that we're still going to continue doing.
Tumblr media
Fat Amy getting Bumper only for his spin-off show love interest to be different and skinny: 39 per
Tumblr media

A fat body used for shock value: 49 per
Movie stars a fat person, and the plot is about them being outcasts because they're fat: 5 per
Fat characters have to learn to themselves: 10 per
Show is about bullying= bad, unless person is fat (All of Us are Dead 2022); 20 per

I want 1,000 movies and shows for every article ever written about a fat person's body and how they had the audacity to be nude, even you fuck-ass feminist publications who write condescending articles about how brave it is. (Ex. Any article written about Hannah on GIRLS)
Feel free to comment with your Fat Tax and how much is owed per offense. I'm sure I've missed some

Happy birthday to bi book-writing extraordinaire Julie Murphy! @andimjulie 📚
Julie Murphy is an author best known for her #1 New York Times Bestselling young adult novel Dumplin’ (2015), which tells the body positive story of Willowdean, a young fat woman in Texas who decides to enter a beauty pageant. The book was later adapted into a Netflix film in 2018.
Murphy has penned a number of other books and short stories. In her 2017 novel Ramona Blue, a confident young lesbian starts to develop feelings for her male best friend and is forced to consider that she may in fact be bisexual. This is an experience many folks in the bi community have had, but it's rarely explored in popular media, which makes Ramona especially exciting.
Murphy was able to draw on her own experiences as a bi woman and discussed what it feels like when the world assumes your sexuality based on your relationship:
I’ve always been bisexual or pansexual or queer or whatever label you want to put on it. I’ve always dated both guys and girls, and when I married my husband, I experienced this really weird thing that I didn’t expect to experience in that I kind of felt like I wasn’t straight enough for all the straight community and I wasn’t gay enough anymore for the queer community. It was this really happy time in my life and honeymoon period in my marriage when I should’ve been really thrilled, but I was having to come to terms with this shift in identity because I would never, for as long as we’re married, experience that feeling of walking into a restaurant and holding hands with a girl, and for people to just identify me as queer.

Cold

A coldness took over their body that only the warmth of another person could erase. - Bo Larson x reader
You had been blasting the heat pump in your car to work, as temperatures were a measly 20 degrees (farenheit) in the city it was one of the coldest days so far this winter. And winter had only just began. You had on one of your thickest jumpers, and a woolen jacket on top of that and it was barely enough to keep the cold out. When you parked the car in the diner car park you sighed as you contemplated risking your job so that you could stay warm. A tap on the window has you rethinking that as you see the friendly smile of your boyfriend and co-worker, Bo, was standing there holding out a puffer jacket and waiting for you to step out of the car. You quickly gathered your things together and pulled the keys out of the ignition before jumping out and into Bo’s arms
“Hey there sweetcheeks, thought you might be needing this” he says as he wraps the puffer jacket around you as he pulls you into his arms and holds you as close to him as possible, you feel his body heat radiating through you and it wards off the chill.
“Hey Bo, thanks for meeting me out here” you say placing a kiss on his cheek
“Your very welcome, lets get you inside huh?” he suggests and you nod, grateful for this adorably caring man.

Did I miss a lot from Dumplin' book in the movie? Yes, some things would have been more heartbroken.
I still cried, laugh and sang.
Good movie and if you liked check out the book!
