Qipao/Cheongsam Taobao Shop Recs
Tumblr media
A while ago I received a direct message asking for recs on where to buy qipao/cheongsam, and I figured I’d make a post for others who’d also be interested.
First of all - I think qipao should be tried on and bought in-person if at all possible, since having the right fit is important - especially if it’s for a formal occasion like a wedding. However, since that’s often not possible, I’ve compiled a list of online shop recs, mainly for more casual occasions.
Since English-language online qipao shops are plentiful and easy to find, I’ll be focusing this list on Taobao shops only. Please note that these are my personal recs, based on my own aesthetic preferences. Thus most of the recs are for shops focused on retro-inspired, minguo-style qipao made using the traditional 平裁/pingcai (flat tailoring) method. Also, I have not actually purchased qipao from any of these shops (all my qipao were bought in person) - this is based mainly on how appealing I find the designs.
1. 嬉姷/Xi You - Elegant qipao modelled closely on historical designs, mainly from the Republican era/minguo. Careful attention paid to historical details. My favorite qipao shop to browse for fun:
Tumblr media
2. 海上芳时/Shanghai Fancy - Specializes in chic minguo-style designs of the 1920s-1940s. Recently came out with a neat art deco-inspired collection:
Tumblr media
3. 唐之语/Tang Zhi Yu - Retro-style qipao in a variety of bold prints, with a focus on the form-fitting designs of the 1950s-1960s, including those from the film “In the Mood for Love”:
Tumblr media
4. 繁莳/Fancy Dream - Dreamy, delicate retro-inspired qipao and modified qipao. Also has a nice selection of winter majia (vests):
Tumblr media
5. Top Ulara - A large selection of classic, retro-style qipao with a hint of glamour. Offers lots of long/thick/layered qipao suitable for colder weather:
Tumblr media
6. 梦回故里/Menghui Guli - Nostalgic, conservative retro-style qipao for all seasons. Old-fashioned in a good way:
Tumblr media
7. 柳园旗袍/Liuyuan Qipao - Retro-style qipao with bold and interesting prints, in styles from the 1910s to the 1960s. The shop currently doesn’t show any products, but hopefully it’ll restock soon:
Tumblr media
8. 限时赏味/Xianshi Shangwei - Streamlined, retro-style qipao in subtle colors and prints that exemplify understated elegance:
Tumblr media
9. 茉茉/Momo - Tons of options for simple, cute, and casual retro-style qipao suitable for daily wear. Designs tend towards monochromes and all-over prints. Another review/rec here:
Tumblr media
10. 珞珞如石/RoseEra - Simple yet elegant retro-style and contemporary qipao. I love the shop’s use of sheer fabrics & layering in its designs:
Tumblr media
11. 向南飞FLY - Offers a selection of casually stylish retro-style qipao and modified qipao for daily chic:
Tumblr media
12. 川黛/Chuan Dai - Soft, feminine, pastel-infused qipao & modified qipao in retro-inspired and contemporary styles:
Tumblr media
13. 四斤自制/Sijin Studio - Creative, avant-garde takes on (modified) qipao & qipao-inspired outfits:
Tumblr media
14. 密扇/Mukzin - Colorful, playful, and irreverent modified qipao and qipao-inspired outfits. There’s also an English website here:
Tumblr media
If you like the above qipao but still want an English website, there are several Taobao resellers that carry similar designs - for example, Beth and Brian Qipao.
Finally, when it comes to in-person shops, I want to highlight Xiangjiang Silk Co., a relatively new boutique in New York City specializing in actual vintage 1950s-1960s qipao. There’s an article here on the boutique and its founder Heather Guo (who was featured in Vogue). Store visits are appointment-only, so you’ll have to reach out to Heather via her social media if you want to drop by.
If anyone has reviews of the above shops and/or more qipao shop recs, please share! ^^
Bonus: I also have online shop recs for hanfu (1, 2), modified hanfu/hanyuansu (1, 2), hanfu accessories, weimao, and hair accessories.

Hi I have an Asma outfit question if you don't mind! Sometimes you draw her with this really pretty veil that covers the bottom half of her face, is there a specific name for this type of veil? (online searching sadly isn't helping) It's really super pretty and the way you draw the mesh is so cool 💖
Thank you so much & yea no problem! The veil is based on some more contemporary styles of veil in Yemeni traditional dress, there’s some with more transparent fabrics and others that are not. The veil, or at least the more traditional ones, are called a Lithmah.
There’s also similar ways of wearing it in parts of southern Saudi Arabia - the transparent/semi transparent type of veil piece is something you’ll see a lot of different Arab boutiques but it isn’t uncommon for Arab women across West Asia to decorate their veils like this. Here’s some examples:

And here’s the more traditional veils with a Yemeni Sana’ani Sitarah & Mughmug with a Lithmah:

What’re vintage pieces (of anything!) that you’d recommend we invest in? For myself I’ve been into buying Ralph Lauren shirts, and other “business casual” “old money” clothing. I’m also investing in good shirts, socks, etc. I’m planning on having a great, versatile wardrobe. Do you have any suggestions on what other clothing items I should invest in/other vintage items worth our money?
I love this for you!
Not sure if we are talking about real vintage (40yrs+) or vintage as in purchasing clothing that is considered timeless? Or both?
I created sort of this hierarchy for how much money I invest in my clothes. My core items that can easily fall under a "capsule wardrobe" category are where I drop the most money. I know that they will be heavily used and will last me. The pricing varies, sometimes my tailor will let me know that they got a hold of high-quality fabric and have pieces made to fit me with amazing stitching and structure. Other times I will find amazing items in boutiques that are based in wealthy areas or come across someone who specializes in making custom items like a shoemaker. I have ordered online as well from brands that are considered ethical as long as their fabric and stitching are great as well. I sometimes work with a personal shopper or stylist who knows what I like and will snatch the items for me since they're constantly at stores/boutiques/courtiers and have connections that I do not have in the fashion world. When it comes to very expensive dresses I prefer to rent them through a stylist or whoever has the item I want to wear, usually a designer of course.
I do have some good items from Ralph Lauren, but I tend to like Brooks Brothers more. I feel that they have fewer clothes for women than men but when I do find something good I like it a lot more than my RL pieces. Lately, I've had some items from Carolina Herrera in the back of my mind and I'm trying to decide if I need them as much as I want them😅 I can talk about this topic for days!
I don't think there is a right or a wrong way, as long as it's good quality and serves its purpose it's worth investing in. This is just my opinion on clothes, jewelry/accessories is a whole other topic!

The Feminine Appearance Part 1 - Modesty in More Detail
Modesty, unfortunately, has developed a connotation of only being one specific type of way: boring, unflattering, frumpy, grandma-ish. We've been taught that if you're modest, you're automatically seen as unattractive and/or pretty girls and beautiful women can't be modest.
While modesty is super important and needs to be/should be followed by a traditional feminine woman, that doesn't mean you have an excuse to neglect your appearance and look unattractive.
You do not need to look like your grandma to be modest, so put the mumu down. Modesty doesn't not equal frumpiness or is the antithesis of fashionable dressing. It simply means that we do not need to show off all of our good to look attractive.
Take me for example. I went through the entire of college thinking that in order to be seen as attractive, I needed to wear the shortest shorts possible and show off my chest at any opportunity. Now I know however, that a dress that goes to just below my collarbone and is knee length is still just as attractive if you know how to wear it correctly.
A feminine, traditional woman can't neglect her appearance. It's our duty to be put together, to stay attractive, and be pleasant to be around. We owe it to ourselves, our husbands, our community. And it starts with one of the easiest things to change about yourself, your clothes.
One of the number one things I see that work to ruin modesty is not dressing for your body type or just opting for the baggy, 3 sizes too big garment. Flowy is fine, but baggy is going to do all the wrong things to your feminine shape. Don't show it off, but don't completely hide from it as well. There's a balance, cinch in your waist with a belt or wear an outfit that you brought to a tailor to fit you just right.
The other main thing I see is your clothing being very plain. Simplicity is nice in certain circumstances but in order to be attractive and modest, you need to start playing with patterns and fabrics, change things up a bit. You don't need to always wear solid colors in cotton or wool. Opt for maybe a floral pattern or fabric like satin or chiffon.
Here's some key items that help elevate your modesty and keep you away from looking old:
Accessories. Don't let your clothes just speak for themselves. Make yourself look put together, wear a necklace or some nice earrings to make the rest of you pop. My favorites are usually a simple chain or one with a subtle pendant and smaller hoop earrings. Wear a neck scarf, sunglasses that flatter you face shape.
Slip/Satin skirts
Matching Sets
Longline or tailored blazers
Jean skirts IF done correctly, with a raw hem or slightly distressed with a tailored fit
Layering pieces. Have a spaghetti strap top or dress you want to wear? Throw a t-shirt underneath.
Play with patterns and fabrics, don't just stick with plain white or black cotton
Graphic t-shirts. If you have them, wear them with a skirt and a cardigan to jazz it up!
Smock tops, especially for ladies like me with larger chests
Modest fashion that is flattering and age appropriate is sometimes SO difficult to find in standard retail stores! I promise that you can find something almost everywhere, but digging for those holy grail items can be exhausting.
So here are some stores, in person and online, that I find hold the most amount of modest products so you don't waste your time:
Uniqlo - this is where I bought my FAVORITE house dress, plus is a great store for basics
H&M - particularly their sections on business wear has great blouses, skirts, and dresses
Primark - this can be hit and miss but the dresses are wonderful
Ivy City and Co. - an online boutique based in Utah, has great items and adorable Mommy and Me matching sets!
NeeSee's Dresses - caters specifically to modest fashion, a bit pricier but so worth it
JC Penney and Kohls - they're everywhere and they have pretty much everything under the sun you would want, dress, skirts, loose pants, and blouses!
Amazon - I try not to shop here for clothes all that often because quality can vary, but if it has a good review, it's typically great and has great variety!

The Supremes
They were not only the most commercially successful female group of the '60s but among the top 5 pop/rock/soul acts of that decade. Diana Ross, Mary Wilson, and Florence Ballard had a mature, glamorous demeanor that appealed equally to teens and adults. Beautiful, musically versatile, and unique, the original Supremes were America's sweethearts.

Edie Sedgwick
The original 'it girl' inspired Bob Dylan and Andy Warhol, and was the toast of the New York art scene with her bouffant blonde hair, vintage chandelier earrings and by wearing nothing but a leotard and tights.

The Designers
London's fashion sector existed until the 1960s in the shadow of the renowned Parisian couturiers. Paris served as the centre of global fashion, specialising in tailored clothing for a fantastically wealthy, elite group of women. But all of a sudden, as the youth market expanded, London started to lead the pace.
Thanks to a handful of up-and-coming young designers trained in the couture tradition, Paris has maintained its edge. Fashion firms like Saint Laurent, Cardin, and Courrèges discovered how to appeal to younger customers. They established ready-to-wear shops and concessions in department stores and produced "space age" clothing that was quickly imitated on the high street.
Tumblr media
The youth market was enormous in the US, and department stores made millions by importing London fashions. But retailers also recognised the boutique's potential. Local stores that catered to affluent customers by selling unique, cutting-edge designs thrived, notably in New York.
Tumblr media
Andrè Courrèges
André Courrèges
The French designer is best known for introducing the revolutionary space look- featuring white boots, goggles and boxy dresses designed in futuristic metallic shades, high shine fabrics such as PVC. His look was a blend of avant-garde geometry with sports classic driven by the youth culture.
Tumblr media
Pierre Cardin
Became famous for his brightly colored mini dresses. At the time his garments were "avant-garde" he like other designers at the time was heavily influenced by “Age" movement. His design style is mainly geometric shapes and colours.
Tumblr media
Paco Rabanne
The Spanish born designer made a name for himself in the 1960s with his space-age inspired fashions. He used materials such as metal, aluminum, plastic, plexi glass and even fiber optics. He was the first fashion designer to use black models in a catwalk show. As a result, he was almost thrown out of the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne, the governing body of Parisienne fashion.
Tumblr media
Givenchy
Responsible for the iconic little black dress that is essential to every woman's wardrobe and dressing the most elegant ladies of the time such as Audrey Hepburn, U.S. first lady Jacqueline Kennedy, Princess Grace of Monaco; Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor and socialite Babe Paley.
Tumblr media
Yves Saint Laurent
Shift dresses and pea coats became YSL trademark styles. In 1965, colour blocking made its entrance in the world of fashion, when Yves Saint-Laurent introduced the colour block dress, inspired by the works of the famous painter, Piet Mondria.
Tumblr media
Emilio Pucci
Is best known for colorful psychedelic prints, especially for headscarves and dresses. In 1962 the world lost screen siren Marilyn Monroe. It's believed that she was buried in one of his dresses. Monroe was a huge fan of his work which can be clarified by the volume of Pucci garments in her personal collection displayed at Christies in 1999 prior to auction. Although an already established designer, Pucci saw an increase in sales in the sixties which he attributed to Miss Monroe and her popularity.
Tumblr media
The Birth of the Hippie
(1960-70s)
Originally used to designate beatniks who had settled in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury neighbourhood, the word hipple is derived from the hipster. The hippies sought for alternate lifestyles. The majority of hippies cherished independence, nature, closeness, peace, generosity, and spirituality.
Tumblr media
Nudity was another expression of freedom that hippies used to set themselves apart from society's norms. They frequently stayed in parks or set up camp in the woods, discarding their belongings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All throughout, people wore tight-fitting bell-bottom jeans, preferably with flower patches and ankle fringe, T-shirts, or just a skimpy halter top. All of the peasant blouses complemented jeans. Anything handcrafted was considered an accessory, and many of them had peace symbols. Popular shirts and dresses had floral prints that stood for peace and love.
In general, people dressed in a way that they believed represented who they were as individuals and not only to follow the rules of fashion. For instance, both sexes wore their hair longer and it had an unruly, uncared-for appearance. This was in response to the mid-60s girl in the miniskirt who had neat, short hair.
Tumblr media
Woodstock 1969
At Woodstock over 250,000 hippies showed up to hear artists like Janis Joplin, The Who, Canned Heat, The Allman Brothers, and County Joe and the Fish. Woodstock was not just a music concert. It was a "profound religious experience."
Tumblr media
vintag.es. (2015). 40 Rare and Incredible Color Photographs That Capture Scenes of the Woodstock Music & Art Fair in August 1969. [Online]. www.vintag.es. Last Updated: 7 February 2015. Available at: https://www.vintag.es/2015/02/40-rare-and-unseen-color-photos-of.html [Accessed 3 january 2023].
The controversy of drugs
The most popular music of the time was psychedelic rock. Many of concerts were places for lippies to protest, socialise, dance, or take drugs. Drugs like marijuana and LSD were a big art of the hippy/counterculture movement. Using drugs made hippies feel like the were belling from mainstream society.

setting: blush boutique
featuring: eren öztürk & kui james @thelatekuijames
Eren muttered a curse under his breath, a single faux leather clad fingertip slipping beneath the hole on his palm and rubbing slowly at the skin beneath. This was why he should have kept a larger collection of gloves handy. Sometimes in the middle of hard work, it was easy for the fabric to snag on something and tear. If he hadn’t heard that rip… he shuddered to think of any accidental brushing of skin against his own, tugging at the sleeve of his overcoat to cover the vulnerable hand in question. Down to his last pair, he knew it was time to get another — or maybe a handful, pun intended. It was what drew him to the boutique, shoving his torn glove laced hand into his pocket as he pushed open the door with his other.
This wasn’t normally his scene by any means, ever since swapping from a flip phone to one of those smart phones, the banshee had become an avid fan of online shopping. There was an incredible lack of interaction that came with ordering things online, and practically everything was at his finger tips. Never mind that touch screens didn’t always work well with his preferred handwear, Eren figured out his way around things just to keep his human interaction to an absolute minimum. They did have those smart phone friendly gloves, after all. He wondered if maybe he could find something similar here.
Glancing about at the wares — and incredibly wary of any other bodies idling by — Eren found instead that his gaze landed upon a familiar face. Kui James had been one of those interviewed by the council, when they requested his services. While his skin crawled at the memory of constant contact, a part of his mind whirled with the memory of secrets and visions unfurling before his very eyes. Memories of death were always a complicated affair, one he dealt with on a professional basis. As he looked at them, he wondered if he had done his best to lessen the blow of reliving such a thing, or the awkwardness of sharing it with so many others. Attempting a semblance of a smile — something small, cordial, polite in an efficient way — Eren approached Kui with a slightly bowed head. “Hello there,” he greeted, tone dry but not particularly rude or unwelcoming. “It’s… Kui, right? It’s good to see you again. I hope you’re doing well,” and they could be sure it was earnest, as a fae could not lie. “Perhaps you can help me, you see,” he paused to pull his hand out of his pocket and show the torn glove, “It looks like I’m due for a replacement… or five. You don’t happen to carry high quality gloves? Or maybe even the ones with the touch pad friendly finger tips?”

Omgzz I literally was talking last night about how badly I’ve wanted a corpse bride costume and upset no one has truly made one that was even semi decent. I have only seen one prior and it was horrible. This is the first one I’ve seen not only meet my expectations but surpass them! The only thing it doesn’t thrill me on is the price 😭😭😰😵‍💫
If you are wondering what my standards are for a costume to qualify as passable good,it is pretty simple. They must be as accurate as possible to the actual outfit the character wears in the film/comic strip/book illustration as possible. I want to feel like I have transformed into that character stepping into their shoes and walking their stride enveloping the specifics in how they speak and organically move bringing it all to life in real time! I guess some would call it cosplay these days. Ive just always felt that way when I put on a costume I am no longer myself, I become whoever I’ve decided to métamorphosiez into. I am that character❣️
So back to this costume. I am so torn disheartened at finally having found the costume and it being wayyy out of my budget. Let alone let’s not forget the accessories!!! I mean do you see those amazing platform heel shoes of grandiose greatness!?! And can’t be the Corpse Bride without the veil. Though I wouldn’t mind finding some cheap one at goodwill or some random hole in the wall outdoor mall shop lol. At that point though if you are buying the shoes and dress I mean might as well say fuck it and get the veil. Gahhh……
Well if anyone wants to gift me this Halloween costume I’m an xs and shoe size 7 ( they only run whole sizes I don’t typically wear a 7 lol) or if you want to help me afford to buy it myself my cashapp is $AlyHollywood so feel free and put a note what it’s for when 💸💸 so I can easily keep tally on what goes towards it. I wish cashapp had a savings option to make some funds be put aside to save for a specific item but hey it can’t be exactly like the big banks right!? Lol.
I mean this costume is perfect. My hair is like those shades of blues and purples and whatnot. I truly before seeing this was starting to consider making my own costume and keeping my eyes peeled for used slightly damaged wedding dresses for sale at really discounted prices especially since then being damaged I figured would make it easier to get at a affordable price. Then factoring how to paint, dye, treat, etc the fabrics and alter to make look like hers including the tear with exposed ribs though the corseted torso. I loved this character from the first time I saw the film and can never get tired of this movie. I think she is such a poetic tragedy and beautiful in an unusual way. Decaying beauty. I also adore how she when finally at peace transforms into those beautiful rebel of butterflies 🦋 which are like the well established symbolism of transformation into becoming anew and moving forward onto the future. It was just so perfect and quotes I could really relate to such as
“I’ve been in the dark for so long I forgot how beautiful the moonlight is”
Not that I have plans but I’m sure I could find some lol better question is if I did rock this costume who would be my Vincent!? Lol. I actually found a decent costume for him but his outfit wouldn’t be that hard to recreate from real clothes from not costume shops lol.

A package was left for Mason, from Kui, with the note:
Hi Mason, I was playing with some patterns and I wanted to give you something to say thank you so much for helping to heal me. I hope this is your size and style, but if it isn’t, I promise I won’t be offended. Please come by Blush Boutique to exchange it for something else you might like, whenever you wish.
PS. Say hi to your grandfather for me, and tell him I’m looking forward to tea with him again soon.
- Kui K. James
- / - / -
Mason had to double promise and even prove to their mother that they had not been online shopping with the package arrived with their name on it. Only when they opened it and the note was read did their mother smile, satisfied her child wasn’t lying and also touched at the thought and care that went into making it.
Mason was smiling too, well, beaming actually as he read the note twice over before holding up the hoodie with what could only be described as stars in their eyes and were it a cartoon they thought, there would for sure be little hearts circling around their head. After cooing and rubbing the fabric against their face, Mason, not even caring that they were in the living room took off the current shirt they had been wearing so they could wear the hoodie. And with the note in hand, ran to the garden to hand their grandpa the note before twirling around to show off Kui’s creation.
“Look how cool this is! Is it acceptable to never take it off?”
To which, of course, their grandpa only laughed, “They are talented, aren’t they? Please let Kui know tea with them again would be wonderful.”
