I just had a moment of complete breakdown between my brain and the outside world. A coworker asked me about a fairly simple library procedure. My brain spat out the exact steps for accomplishing what she needed to do.
And my mouth...
Just...
Refused to translate that information into usable speech. I sputtered at her for a few seconds and said, "I know. I know what to do. I just can't tell you."
At this point, everyone was standing and staring at me, which only made the brain-fart worse. I managed to convey that I was having difficulty sorting my brain out and she asked, "Should I ask someone else?" I apologized and agreed that would be best.
I hate when this happens. It makes so little sense to me and it actively impairs my ability to do my job. What is wrong with me!?

i used to be so good at writing strong, thoroughly-researched, thoroughly-edited essays.
as a kid in hs, my teacher literally came up to me, holding my 40 page essay on the intersection of the European witch hunts and capitalism/exploitation/gender roles (it was supposed to be 7 pages...whoops) and went like "this is literally a master's-degree level thesis. what are you doing?? you could literally use this as your final dissertation in a master's program, what the fuck."
NOW??? NOW?? you'd think I'd be oh so skilled. but alas. i can barely piece together two ideas. adhd skill-regression is so so real. im SOBBING

anyone else have multiple traumatic memories associated specifically with holidays/family vacations? because that is a topic I never see discussed in all the So You Had A Shitty Childhood, Now What? self-help books i've been reading. but for me, it was a significant thing. and the more i think about it the more it seems like this would be an (unfortunately) common experience. would be grateful to hear if this matches other peoples' experiences...
#not a shitpost#serious post#ask to tag#tw trauma#cptsd#c-ptsd#and if so we should TALK about it#because it means there are a whole group of survivors out there whose mental health regularly worsens during holidays#like i know i am most certainly not the only person who feels an undefined Dread hanging over christmas/my birthday/july 4 etc#bc too many shitty things happened during those times and now my brain is hypervigilant bc traditionally these are the Danger Times#and this seems like it would be particularly common for survivors of abusive/dysfunctional households (aka most people with c-ptsd)#because holidays/vacations typically mean 1) the whole family is together/being forced to interact#2) and undergoing external stressors e.g. travel/relatives aka 'outsiders' visiting/routines & coping mechanisms being interrupted etc#3) there is social pressure for this to be a Fun Family Bonding Experience which only highlights the cracks in the foundation#and exposes the common Everything Is Fine/We Are A Happy Family lie#4) the cognitive dissonance of feeling tired/anxious/stressed/afraid during a time when you are 'supposed' to be Making Good Memories#and then everyone is angry/tired/anxious/triggered and things boil over and something or someone goes Very Wrong#weird that i'm posting this in october when halloween is...sort of the ONLY holiday i have only good and happy feelings towards#i got lucky there#also i have positive feelings towards Labor Day but that's for socialist reasons

Having ADHD and trying to have executive functionality is like having a toddler for a brain.
It keeps screaming because it wants something. One particular thing. But it won’t actually tell you what that things is.
So you keep trying to give it things in the hopes it will stop screaming. You change the music, you light a candle, you give it a fidget toy, you take it for a walk, you feed it something yummy all the while, your brain (the toddler) Keeps crying and screaming.
In the end you’re in tears. You’re pretty sure you’re not going to get anything done today so you take a shower and change into something comfy.
And then your brain stops screaming.
Turns out you were uncomfy and thats why your brain (the toddler) kept screaming. The jeans were too tight and you were kind of cold and the discomfort was distracting you.
Now you can actually work.

Something I desperately want ppl to know:
LONG COVID CAN LOOK INDISTINGUISHABLE FROM ADULT ADHD
If you are an adult who has never experienced ADHD symptoms until recently: you may have a form of Long COVID
many ppl who have it call ‘brain fog’. Its primary feature is being unable to concentrate & short term memory/working memory issues, which severely impairs executive function.
COVID-induced brain fog’s effect on executive function is essentially indistinguishable from ADHD’s effect on the same.
& brain fog is A VERY COMMON LONG COVID SYMPTOM
as the number of adults with executive dysfunction has shot up, i want people to remember this. Especially if they get an ADHD evaluation and are told they’re not ADHD
Because we are all disabled, and we deserve care and understanding no matter what disabled us

If you have autism, ADHD AuDHD, depression, anxiety, OCD anything that causes you executive dysfunction where you feel overwhelmed by tasks and don't know where to start I need you to stop and read this because this website is about to change your life.
It is called goblin.tools and it is completely free and I believe it is life changing.
Tumblr media
So this magic todo taskmaker is amazing. You can give it any kind of task you need to do and it will break it up into easy to understand, manageable, and accomplishable steps, (that you can then check off the list which probably my favorite part) like cleaning your room, making coffee, etc
Tumblr media
In this example below I put the Magic ToDo Task as "take a shower" (but it can be any task)
Here is the lowest spicy take (aka not broken down into many steps)
Tumblr media
And here is the highest spicy level (where the tasks are broken into many easily managable step that will tell you exactly what to do)
Tumblr media
Any parts of this you feel like didn't give you enough steps? Need more clarity? No problem! Any step you can edit or break it into even smaller steps!
Let's say you are have a foggy brain day and need more instructions for washing your hair, here you go!
Tumblr media
Legitimately it can break down any task, making them so much more approachable and manageable.
And if this incredibly cool task helper thing wasn't enough for you, the website has five other functions
A feature that adjusts the tone of your text, allowing for a more professional or sarcastic expression, ideal for business emails.
An emotion detection tool, which helps interpret the emotional content of a text, identifying anger, frustration, or other sentiments to clarify communication misunderstandings. (I think this feature could help a lot of autistic people SO much)
A function that estimates the time required for various activities, such as making the bed, providing practical scheduling help
There is an entire *insanely* cool cooking function (I am gonna have to make a post about that)
Something called the "Compiler"? I honestly don't get it. It says "Compile my braindump into a list of tasks" (so if someone figures that out please let me know)
And since it is tax season under the cut are the steps it gives you for filing your taxes on the lowest and highest task breakdown levels! :)

my take on adult!ib and mary post the “together forever” ending.
what if they came back to the gallery though. gallery adventures pt. 2. where they will certainly not meet anyone they’ve met before. and shenanigans certainly won’t ensue.
