Riley Elf, 1961. Riley started as a bicycle maker in 1890 and went on to make cars becoming part of BMC (the British Motor Corporation) in 1952. The Elf was a badge-engineered up-market version of the ADO15 Mini. It featured an extended rear that gave it a larger luggage compartment and a "3-box" profile. It remained in production through 3 series until 1969 when BLMC was formed and the Riley marque was discontinued.

That anon acting like being a journalist in motorsport is like being an executive in a capitalist establishment. 🤡 It’s like accusing a McDonalds crew member of being pro capitalism because they work in McDonalds. Like??? As if being treated poorly and paid dirt despite working your ass off everyday is not reason enough to he a socialist. I am a socialist precisely because of my experience as a worker in these filthy corporations! Clown anon!
you're absolutely right but a very large number of people in motorsport and the media are obviously very right wing. even when it's wildly against their own interests or totally in opposition to the concept of journalism or whatever.
especially in worlds like motorsport or the car industry. a lot of people don't like actually covering things, they enjoy being there. whether that's at the Frankfurt motor show or the Miami Grand Prix. and if your goal is just being there then you're willing to work for places where you do actively bad stuff because what you make was never the goal.
that's not how it's ever worked for me and this isn't meant to sound morally superior or whatever because honestly, get what you want i guess. but for me being in paddocks or factories or literally driving cars is so that I can write better pieces and find out more. the pass is to make the media, not the pieces a bartering chip for the pass.
in retrospect, some of that is why it was often pretty lonely. because I wasn't playing the same game as quite a lot of people. and it also makes the industry all the more exploitative because people want that lanyard so much they'll do anything for it.
I was thinking the other day that there's been almost no coverage of the investigation into F1 lobbying the EU and British government on behalf of Aramco, via synthetic fuel. It's a really damning link and I'm not just saying this because I'm quoted in the article but I would absolutely be writing about it if I still had somewhere to do it. it's a really shocking scandal, that F1 is helping hold up combustion car bans by contributing (unproven) information about synthetic fuels.
it's not the kind of thing F1 like people reporting. so suddenly all the men who self-style as hard-nosed business journalists in the paddock are being awfully quiet. because it is more important to still be there.
obviously, I am not still there. I did indeed criticise FE one too many times for their liking and fell out of favour. I am not a model for holding onto your pass. but there is also no point pretending that I could have acted differently just to keep it. anyway, this all turned into a bit of a ramble but turns out there's bad people kind of everywhere and often they're holding the controls.
I think that's part of what's upset me about the Watcher thing. these are guys who deliberately set out to make their own media company so they had that control to make things they were proud of, with the production values they wanted, under their own ownership, without having to fire people all the time. and you're asking them to be more like Buzzfeed? that was the bad old days, friends.

The Sussex Vampire: a bit about Perú
In the last two letters from my dear friend Watson we know about The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire so I have an excuse to dust my old book of history, some English-Spanish dictionaries and Todo Sherlock Holmes.
Mrs. Ferguson (we don't know her name. ACD, how hard was to call her María or Violeta?) and her maid Dolores come from Perú (I know I shouldn't use ´ but I have my Latino ID so I'll do what I want). She was daughter of a Peruvian merchant related to importation of nitrates.
After the Pacific War came a National reconstruction period (1884–1895). During this period Peru has huge external debt and lost many industries related to nitrate production, the occupied provinces of Tacna and Arica were under Chilenization. Latex and oil industries become relevant due to Industrial Revolution but the country was in bankruptcy. In 1886 the Grace Contract was signed between Peru and British bondholders to settle this debt, and the Peruvian Corporation was formed. This corporation agreed to cancel Peru's debt in exchange for £80,000 in annual payments, mining rights, and ownership of the Peruvian rail for 66 years. The corporation also agreed to build 160 kilometers of new railroad.
Nicolás de Piérola was elected president of Peru 1895, and the country began its period known as the Aristocratic Republic. During this time the economy was highly dependent of Britain: The Peruvian Corporation (trains), London Pacific (oil), Cerro de Pasco Minning Corporation (copper), Peruvian Amazon Company (latex rubber) Sugar Company (sugar) and Banco Perú Londres (bank) were the motors of the economy.
Tumblr media
Mrs. Ferguson was probably from an aristrocratic family and received a proper education for a woman of her social status, including learning a foreign language like English. Her "alien religion" was Catholicism like the biggest part of the country because that religion reached almost every corner in South America (by choice or force) during the Colonial Era.
Tumblr media
The maid Dolores had brown skin, so I guess she was indigenous or mestiza (Spaniard+Indigenous). Like her employer she was Catholic too but she hadn't the same education. There were efforts to increase the number of people able to read, but it was a common practice for kids to leave school and work in the same industries as their parents.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dolores didn't study English like Mrs. Ferguson, that's why she use Spanish grammar when she speaks:
“She verra ill,” cried the girl, looking with indignant eyes at her master. “She no ask for food. She verra ill. She need doctor. I frightened stay alone with her without doctor.”
She no ask for food = Ella no pregunta por comida ✔
The translation into Spanish made by Juan Manuel Ibeas reflects this with the absence of some sounds and words:
—Ta my enferma gimió la muchacha, mirando con ojos indignados a su señor—. No quere comía. Mu enferma. Necesita doctor. Me da miedo estar sola con ella sin doctor.
And "leesten", IIRC in Spanish we don't have long/short vowels, so the /ɪ/ in listen can be /iː/ like in heel, details that make English a hard language for Latinos, and harder for someone with Dolores' background.
ACD wrote a whole chapter of "The Mystery of Cloomber" with some Scottish accent, so I doesn't surprise me. I like the level of accuracy of this accent. There are high chances that Dolores doesn't even read in Spanish, so this details are more accurate that I expected.
I understand (a bit) why Mrs Fergurson didn't dare to tell her husband what his son did. She was in a foreign country alone with her maid, she had to deal with another language, another religion and she doesn't have her family or friends there. I can't imagine going back to Perú by steamship in times when the Panama Canal was in construction.

Holy shit you guys are horny for Minoru Suzuki. That was impressive. When the Swerve poll was posted, I was like "Oh yeah he's gonna go to the top of the men's rankings." No. Minoru Suzuki's bare ass from 30 years ago is what does it for Tumblr.
In other news, the Raven fuckers are vindicated. ECW era-Raven has been deemed smashable, but it was close. Four votes made the difference. I commented to my husband that trying to find a good photo of him was stressing me out, so he had a look and commented, "He seems like the kind of guy that is remembered for being hotter than he actually was."
On average, women are 73.2% smashable. Carmella has the dishonorable distinction of being the least smashable woman so far, and being one of two women to be voted not smashable (the other being Cheerleader Julia Hart). Sorry, anonymous person who called her "the most beautiful woman in the WWE." For those who are curious, men are 55.0% smashable on average. Also, this blog's women's division is comparable to the AEW women's division in that women have been featured in 10 polls total, compared to 82 polls for men.
Thanks for bearing with me through the Christmas and New Year holidays. I full on forgot what day it was for a few days there, then I got home from traveling and my keyboard broke??? so please excuse any typos because I am typing on the worst keyboard in the world.

The Very First Mini
1959 - Morris Mini Minor (621 AOK) This was the first one off the production line, never sold, now at British Motor Museum at Gaydon Warwickshire UK.
The Mini is a small, two-door, four-seat car, with FWD and transverse mounted 4-Cylinder OHV engine of 848cc / 998cc / 1098cc and 1275cc options over the course of its development. Developed as ADO15, and produced by the British Motor Corporation (BMC) and its successors, from 1959 through 2000, original Minis were built for four decades and sold during six decades, from the last year of the 1950s into the last year of the 20th century, over a single generation, as fastbacks, estates, and convertibles. By the 4th October 2000 A total of 5,387,862 cars had been manufactured, nearly 1.6 million of which were sold in the UK, although the majority of these were sold at least 20 years before the Mini's demise, meaning that the majority of those sold had been scrapped before the end of the original Mini's production life

🇬🇧 Explore the captivating history of the MG MGA—a timeless classic that embodies the essence of British automotive craftsmanship! Introduced in the 1950s, the MGA made waves with its striking design and exhilarating performance, captivating drivers around the globe.
👉 The MG MGA marked a significant milestone for MG sports cars. Announced on 26 September 1955, the car was officially launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show. With its sleek contours, graceful curves, and distinctive grille, the MGA epitomized elegance and sophistication on the open road.
🛞 The MGA design dates back to 1951 when MG designer Syd Enever created a streamlined body for George Philips' TD Le Mans car. As it was so different from the older MG models, it was called the MGA, the "first of a new line" to quote the contemporary advertising. There was also a new engine available; therefore, the car did not have the originally intended XPAG unit but was fitted with the BMC B-series engine allowing a lower bonnet line.
🚗 Underneath its sleek exterior, the MGA boasted a lineup of powerful engines, delivering an unforgettable driving experience characterized by agility and precision. Whether navigating winding country roads or zipping through city streets, the MGA offered a thrilling ride that left a lasting impression.
👑 The MG MGA quickly gained iconic status, earning recognition in pop culture and becoming a symbol of automotive excellence. The MGA has been raced extensively in the U.S. since its 1955 introduction and with considerable success. In Sports Car Club of America competition, the MGA has won numerous regional and national championships.
🌟 Whether admired for its iconic aesthetics, dynamic performance, or rich heritage, the MG MGA continues to evoke passion and admiration among collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.

In which I SkyTrain-post about: the Dunsmuir Tunnel.
Or, actually, why the SkyTrain network as a whole feels like a goofy little toy train, while also being a really cool example of quirky '80s technology being pushed right to its absolute limits. But first, some context is useful — specifically, the urban freeway plan for Vancouver, which, unlike many cities in North America, was largely aborted.
Tumblr media
↑↑↑ This is what they wanted to do to part of the City of Vancouver…
Tumblr media
…and this is the overarching plan that was mostly defeated by an organised left in Vancouver. (The few areas that weren't saved, well, those deserve their own posts.) So, with a massive freeway plan being shot down for the city centre, what was the plan going to be for transit? Well, after some amount of messing around with express buses throughout the '70s on the part of the regional transit network, which was operated by BC Hydro before BC Transit took it over… …Vancouver got chosen to host Expo 86. Which was themed around transportation, being named "Transportation and Communication: World in Motion — World in Touch".
Tumblr media
Which meant: well shit, maybe now's a good time to make up for having dodged the whole highway bullet. However, using a normal heavy rail network, on entirely new infrastructure, with human drivers, was untenable, because: I guess I need to introduce the Socreds.
Tumblr media
I'm not going to get into the ideology of social credit, which the Socreds never actually ended up being able to give effect to, or the somewhat unusual conservatism of WAC Bennett's long administration, but effectively, by the early '80s, the Socreds had pivoted to plain old neoliberalism, which meant: cutting costs all over and also keeping unions out of whatever they could. (As an aside, if you've ever got the time, read about the Solidarity protests of 1983 in BC, because the sheer intensity of the Bill Bennett administration's fuckery on that front is a pretty clear demonstration of shock doctrine.) And yes, if you're keeping track, that's William Bennett for 20 years → 3 years of not William &c. → Bill Bennett for 11 years → Wilhelmus Vander Zalm for 5 years. Lots of William happening. And all of those assorted Williams were Socred Premiers. But how do you cut costs and also keep unions away from a brand new metro system? Well, Urban Transit Development Corporation, a Crown Corporation (basically a state-owned enterprise, but Canadian) in Ontario had an idea:
Tumblr media
A tiny train. But it runs frequently. It's also automated, and uses a linear induction motor for propulsion. That's kinda critical to the fact that the SkyTrain works whatsoever, really, given other constraints I'm about to get into. And what else can one do to save costs on a rail system?
Tumblr media
Reuse old alignments, like the Central Park Line of the British Columbia Electric Railway.
Tumblr media
But what saves even more money?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Reusing old infrastructure. Basically, until just a few years before the SkyTrain started operation, Canadian Pacific ran long-distance trains, all the way out to Toronto (and sometimes further), through the Dunsmuir Tunnel from Waterfront Station, which is now the "main" hub for TransLink, linking the SeaBus, Expo Line, West Coast Express. Canada Line, and many bus routes. But that got shut down, to make way for literally slicing the Tunnel in half height-wise — and thus letting two tracks use the same tunnel, which was built tall enough for old steam trains. Which means: you've got trains constrained to a fairly tiny loading gauge, which, sure, maybe you'd want to build longer platforms to compensate for that, but:
Tumblr media
No. Hence automation. For example, try to find a precise timetable for the Expo Line anywhere on the Internet, without screwing around with APIs or whatever. You can't, last I checked. The design philosophy resulting from the "let's spend as little as goddamn possible while still having a grade separated rapid transit system" approach means that, well, we've got trains so tiny in loading gauge terms that you can fit two in a barely modified single-track rail tunnel, which are barely even 80m long, which still could carry 25,700 people per hour per direction, solely thanks to completely absurd frequencies. Like, TransLink deserves to be yelled at over the lack of redundancy in such a critical transportation backbone, and the provincial governments that they rely on for funding deserve it even more, but it's. Well. Kinda interesting how the most ridiculous possible political pressures resulted in, like, a fairly functional transit system, via the weirdest specifications possible. However, this is also why, not even 40 years after the Expo Line opened for regular service, it's already close to its limits. They were far too cautious and non-ambitious in their design for the system, chasing ideologies of Fiscal Responsibility™ instead of future-proofing, and now we've got transit infrastructure that's going to require redundancy to the tune of an entire extra metro line in the northwest/southeast direction eventually, even if other connections should be able to pick up the slack in the medium term.

Henry ‘Chips’ Channon: The Diaries (Vol. 1), 1918-38, entry for 10th April 1923
Tuesday 10th April
Motored with Paul of Serbia and Lady Cimmie Mosley¹ to Chichester for Lady Doris Gordon-Lennox’s² wedding. The groom is a horsey creature called Clare Vyner³ who strangely looks and lisps like a parish priest. The town was crowded with cheering people and bedecked with flags; the cathedral packed with locals with the Mayor and Corporation in full robes and with ‘fashionables’ from London. Paul was rather triste and thoughtful as he has wanted to marry Doris for years; it would have been a most disastrous alliance and I did my best to prevent it. His favourite hymn was played, by accident or design?? The Duke of York arrived with Elizabeth, her first really public appearance since her engagement. Afterwards we went to Goodwood House where we were recieved by the old Duke of Richmond.⁴ There were many presents but I looked more at the Van Dycks. It is extraordinary how Stuart they look these Gordon-Lennoxes.⁵
1. Cynthia Blanche Curzon (1898-1933), second daughter of Lord Curzon and his first wife, Mary Victoria Leiter (1870-1906), of Chicago. Lady Cynthia (as she became on her father’s advancement to an earldom in 1911) married in 1920 Oswald Ernald ‘Tom’ Mosley (1896-1980), who succeeded his father as 6th Bt in 1928. Mosley was Conservative and then Independent MP for Harrow from 1918 to 1924, failed to beat Neville Chamberlain in Birmingham in 1924, but became Labour MP for Smethwick from 1926 to 1931. He then founded his own party and became leader of the British Union of Fascists. His pursuit of fascist doctrine in the 1930s made him in equal parts a figure of fear and ridicule. He was interned during the Second World War with his second wife, Diana Guinness (née Mitford) (1910-2003), who had been his mistress, and whom he married in 1936 in Goebbels’ house in Berlin, with Hitler in attendance.
2. Lady Doris Hilda Gordon-Lennox (1896-1980), daughter of the Earl of March, who succeeded his father in 1928 as 8th Duke of Richmond and Gordon; married Clare George Vyner (né Compton) (1894-1989) in 1923.
3. Vide supra.
4. Charles Henry Gordon-Lennox (1845-1928), by courtesy Lord Settrington until 1860 and Earl of March until 1903, when he succeeded his father as 7th Duke of Richmond and Lennox and 2nd Duke of Gordon.
5. The dukedom was created in 1675 for the bastard son of King Charles II with his mistress, Louise de Kérouallie.

Nash-Healey Le Mans Coupe, 1954, by Pininfarina. The joint venture between Nash-Kelvinator and British car maker Donald Healey had begun in 1951 with Pininfarina becoming involved in 1952. The intention was to create a halo car that would add prestige to the Nash brand. But by 1954 Nash-Kelvinator had become a division of American Motors Corporation and, with just 90 cars sold that year, the model was abandoned
