@linzod I hope you don’t mind me using a scene from your story for this prompt? Linzod’s Sandman/Buffy the Vampire Slayer crossover, Slaying Nightmares, is absolutely wonderful and I urge everyone to go and read it and the sequel!

The developing friendship between Dream and Willow is particularly lovely and this is the scene that inspired this silly little sketch (from ch 6):

They have gathered up everything that they require and are walking out of the complex towards the vehicles when Dream feels a tug on his sleeve. He sees Willow at his elbow. He allows himself to slow down and asks, “What may I do for you Willow Rosenberg?”

Willow holds up a small red crystal on a silver chain and hands it to him. As he accepts it, he feels a surge of power flow from the object. He looks at her quizzically.

“I wanted to give you this. You see, we all feel bad about what we did capturing you and all, and I thought about how you were captured before. If an amateur like Burgess can do this, others with my level of training could as well. Since we both had a binding spell, I think that the cat may be out of the bag on that knowledge.”

Dream does not know where she is going with this, but decides to let his words ring out with kindness rather than distrust, “And?”

“Well, and, you don’t deserve that. It is wrong that magic can capture such an essential force in the universe, one that only supports us. So, I made this for you. I turned the summoning spell around a bit so if you wear this it will block any similar spell. So, you won’t have anyone capturing you again.”

Dream holds up the talisman, turning it this way and that. “This is an enormous demonstration of trust, Willow Rosenberg, and a gift of enormous magnitude. I owe you a boon for what you have provided me.”

I’m very weird about them, I LOVE the ship and think that it was canon in the sense that they had a weird thing for each other, but don’t think it should’ve been canon in the sense of them getting together, if that makes sense. BUT that doesn’t mean I don’t love reading about hypotheticals! so yeah, any coffy fic recs would be gladly appreciated. preferably set in the canon universe (which includes the birthdayverse or wishverse) but if it’s a really really good AU then I’ll still give it a shot :)

I’m obligated by law to post about this since it’s (I believe) only the 4th fic to actually make me cry real tears. That honor goes to the second story in the series (and very nearly the third). The first story isn’t super spuffy, but is obligatory reading due to how amazing the relationship between Spike and Dawn is in it.

The prose seemed a little off to me for quite a bit, but that’s probably just my ADHD talking since I did start to get used to it and then I didn’t even notice it eventually. The story was fantastic and made me stick it out despite having to reread paragraphs when I got lost. I think that’s what made it all the more shocking when I just suddenly started crying during an earlier chapter in ‘Blood Kin’. I didn’t see it coming and it hit me hard.

If you like the potentials (and OC potentials!) and if you like Dawn and some wacky vampire shit - this is the fic for you. It’s got some excellent hurt/comfort which is my food of choice. So much hurt/comfort throughout and I just adore it. The Spike characterization was my favorite- some side characters felt OOC on occasion, but was still immensely enjoyable.

It’s also epic! I love epic long fics. Right when I thought I’d read all the big Spuffy ones, here comes this series. Kept me well fed for days. Wild how I’ve been in this fandom for so long and always seem to miss the huge things.

I’d stop at the 4th story, unless you’re a greedy little masochist (like me!) and just need to read all there is no matter how much it will break your heart. This last story would have also been amazing, I can tell. Unfortunately, as the author is no longer with us, there isn’t even a tiny hope that more will come. I’m so glad that she got to leave us with this beautiful story

tl/dr: Read this! It’ll make you feel things. If you like safe and completed fics, stop at part 4.

Did Voyager fandom ever go through the Casablanca AU phase back in the 90s and early aughts?

The theme was angst and the ship doesn't end up together just like in the movie. But the 'Rick' analog in the story almost always ends with a new beautiful friendship.

I think LoT was the first fic that kicked off this whole chain. Post-Colonization.

I've seen like one episode of Buffy maybe but I've watched most of Angel including the episodes that had Faith in them and I feel I understand the concept of Buffy the show and the character, anyway should I read Faith/Buffy fanfic and if so which ones?

god okay i REALLY think you should watch buffy though. i mean, i'm remarkably biased because it's one of my all-time favorite shows, but if you have the time and even the slightest bit of interest i'd recommend at least season 3 (IDEALLY. season 2 + 3 because they are very much part of one big conversation, but if you can only commit to one thing then i'd say prioritize s3 for the faith arc).

BUT you didn't ask me about that, you asked me if you should read faith/buffy fanfic so - yeah! yes. there's a lot out there that's SO good, of course you should read it.

i think ground-up AUs are good for this bc you can read them with basically no knowledge of the source (i mean. it's enhanced by source knowledge, but you can get by without) for this I'd recommend the no-powers college AU 2001 by @morningsound15, which does an incredible job of translating the important parts of the characters and their relationships and hang-ups and issues to a world where they aren't wrapped up in supernatural shenanigans.

Aside from that, I think there are a few season-rewrites that are pretty accessible if you've got a basic working understanding of the show and the characters. Some of my favorites are:

Coexist by @coraniaid which is a lovely (and recently completed!) canon-divergence AU that explores what would change if it was Giles, not Jenny Calendar, who was killed by Angelus in season 2. It's a rare type of AU that consistently surprises me with how intricate and thoughtful it is in exploring the ripple effects of such a huge change and it does some great character work with both Faith and Buffy.

to hold off the lightning by @episode5s which is a season 3 AU that picks up about halfway through s3. Again we get some really amazing character work (the character voice here is just insanely good) with a lot of amazing fallout from another canon-divergence point - what if Faith was able to be walked back from the ledge after killing Allen Finch? It's a tricky proposition - I genuinely think a lot of the best parts of Faith's character arc are tied into the fact that she has her heel turn and goes dark, but here the author is able to preserve all the best of the tension and trauma of that arc, while still allowing things to play out differently. Incredible slowburn romance here, too.

Finally, I'd be remiss to write a fuffy fic rec list without touching on a truly inspirational all-timer from one of the fandom's best and most prolific writers: the Vengeance verse fics by @aliceinwondrbra. The series begins with Vengeance a Wishverse AU - season 4 Buffy meets an alternate universe version of Faith that didn't go dark and experiences a belated gay awakening in the course of working together. The sequel, Hypnopompia, is where things really take off for me - back in her universe, Buffy is determined to help Faith. There's a ton of great stuff here: shared coma dreams, Faith redemption, a really great exploration of Faith and Buffy's sexuality and related traumas. Alice is one of the best in the biz when it comes to voice - absolute, total pro. I read this fic like two years ago and it changed my brain.
