no spoilers, but a quick gush about brc-
as a followup to my last post before the game came out, I recently finished Bomb Rush Cyberfunk- aside from some collectibles and 100%ing the whole game- and man. man. okay no you dont get it (unless you know jsr and the fans' history of begging for a new game or SOMETHING).
I think a lot of people I've seen in the brc/jsr tags agree that this is what we wanted. Team Reptile did in 3-4 years what sega couldnt do in 20+
the whole thing, the style, the graffiti and trick system, the ost, all holds up to jsr/jsrf's standards imo, it did not disappoint , even the plot held up and i didn't even expect much of a plot. It had a somewhat silly absurdity to it towards the end (not spoiling anything) but they made it fucking cool. (as did jsr/jsrf tho tbh)
literally my only criticism for the gameplay or anything is a skill issue that's my own damn fault or minor unproblematic bugs that could easily be patched.
this game in my opinion Fucking Delivered on the JSR/F experience while also standing on its own two legs as an original game. its not just "JSRF 2"
it has heart. it has soul
people made affectionate jokes that this game looks like it understands the concept of love.
It does.
and this is where i add a corny followup like "and it understands Da People" --

so im new to the music scene, ive just barely started tinkering around in lmms. but i wanted to ask, whats your preferred method to mastering your music? i know there isnt The One True Way™, but i just genuinely have no idea where to start on that. (by the way?? brohoof is a BOP and i LOVE IT!! thank you for creating such a jam)
it keeps changing because i keep learning new things. right now i tend to go:
utility gain adjustment (i use VUMT to monitor RMS) > tape distortion (usually Slate VTM) > subtle corrective EQ + hp30Hz lp25kHz + sub mono (FabFilter Pro Q3) > Gullfoss > gentle compression (always differs, i'll list some fav vst's later) > broad tonal EQ (i use Pulsar Massive or Softube Tube Tech usually) > clipper (been using TDR Limiter for that) > i use soothe2 on the "master 1" preset > and then final limiter (usually FabFilter Pro L2 or iZotope Vintage Limiter + Maximizer).
you don't need all this stuff if you just wanna do basic masters though. all you rlly need is an eq and limiter which your DAW should come with.
i go between different compressors for my buss compression stage so here's a list of the ones i choose between:
Ableton Glue Compressor (comes with ableton)
Waves G Series SSL Bus Compressor (it sounds different than the normal ssl glue compressor, because it's emulated wrong. but it sounds good. i also DONT recommend it because you should avoid buying anything from waves bc their drm sucks and you have to pay for upgrades and their shit loads super slow in the DAW even if you have a good computer)
Arturia _comp_diode_609 is sometimes good
FabFilter Pro C2 on gentle settings
Softube/Weiss Compressor/Limiter is one of my favs right now
Plugin Alliance/Brainworks/Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor A usually for rock music
Plugin Alliance/Brainworks/SPL Iron also usually for rock music
Everything I've listed here goes on huge sales (except for Slate stuff), so pls don't buy at full price if you want to get them. Especially Plugin Alliance, because you can get most of their plugins for like $30 a pop with all the sales they do and all the coupons they send out (if you're in their system and have already bought something). Or if you don't want to pay at all just pirate them. However, of the things I've linked, please don't pirate from:
Klanghelm who makes the VUMT, it's just one person who makes plugins and they should get money for it.
Tokyo Dawn Labs who makes TDR Nova, they're a really really small company afaik.
hope this is helpful! if it's not, just slap a gentle eq + limiter on the master track of your song. it'll do until you learn more/have more to work with i promise. all of my music before Homeward had zero things on the master track lol.

My Favorite Anime OPs and EDs from 2010-2019
Tumblr media
No one asked for this, but i’m doin’ it anyway cuz there’s so many songs out there that i’ve never heard anyone talk about. like, y’all sleep on Yu-Gi-Oh! apparently. lmao
Going by release year, here’s all the OPs and EDs i can remember that i luv (and still do to this day). i may or may not have gotten all the years right. hell, i’m not even sure i got the OP and ED numbers right.
It’ll go by: Song Name - Artist (Name of Anime and Which OP/ED it is) an asterisk means i REALLY like it above the rest.
Hopefully this’ll help introduce you to some new jams you missed out on! ^  ^
2010
Going My Way! ~Road to Tomorrow~ - Masaaki Endoh (Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds OP5)*
Close to You - ALvino (Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds ED4)
Future Colors - Plastic Tree (Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds ED5)
Gravity 0 - Aqua Timez (Star Driver OP)*
Never Give Up! - Sonar Pocket (Digimon Xros Wars OP)*
Period - Chemistry (Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood OP4)*
Rain - SID (Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood OP5)* THE. FEELS.
Uragiri no Yuuyake - THEATRE BROOK (Durarara!! OP)* Y’all remember this one? Lmao
Trust Me - Yuya Matsushita (Durarara!! ED)
Ice Cream Syndrome - Sukima Switch (Pokemon Zoroark: Master of Illusions ED)*
My Soul, Your Beats! - Lia (Angel Beats OP) WAIT HOLD ON, ANGEL BEATS WAS THIS DECADE? I THOUGHT THAT WAS 2009 OR SOMETHING. DAHEQ?

Calling - FLOW (Heroman ED)*
SHIVER - the GazettE (Black Butler II OP)
2011
Samurai Heart (Some Like it Hot!) - SPYAIR (Gintama ED17)* And on this day I realized….SPYAIR is lit.
New World - Twill (Digimon Xros Wars OP2)
Masterpiece - Mihimaru GT (Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL OP)
Boku Quest - Golden Bomber (Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL ED)* I luv watching the actual ending sequence. It fits my cyber aesthetic to a T.
BRAVING! - KANAN (Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL OP2)
Setsubou no Freesia (Longing Freesia) - Daizystripper (Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL ED2)* I’ll be completely honest, this song has been my favorite anime theme over most, if not all others, ever since. It’s kinda held a special place in my heart as it’s got memories of what transpired during 2012 that i don’t think i’ll ever forget. From the summer trip we took down south to me creating my very first OCs, Takuya and his Charmander partner Drake, on paper, i’ll luv this song with all my heart. ^  ^
Lovers - 7!! (Seven Oops) (Naruto Shippuden OP)
Counter Identity - UNISON SQUARE GARDEN (Soul Eater Repeat Show OP)*

Hacking to the Gate - Kanako Itou (Steins;Gate OP)* THIS SONG CLEARED MY SKIN AND RAISED MY GRADES.

Core Pride - UVERworld (Blue Exorcist OP)
2012
Mask - Aqua Timez (BLEACH ED30?)
Soul Drive - Color Bottle (Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL OP3)*
Wild Child - Moumoon (Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL ED3)* Whenever I hear this song, I either think of school shenanigans or, if school isn't a thing in their world, a high school AU. Lmao
Unbreakable Heart - Hideaki Takatori (Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL OP4)
Artist - Vistlip (Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL ED4)*
Stand By Me - Stereopony (Eureka Seven AO ED)* Ok I know some people don't wanna remember AO, but hear me out here. Lmao

Key Plus Words - Shihoko Hirata & Yumi Kawamura (Persona 4 the Animation OP2)
Harukaze - SCANDAL (BLEACH OP15)*
Crossing Field - LiSA (Sword Art Online OP) I like making SAO jokes as much as the next guy, but let's be real here. Crossing Field was still a pretty good song.
STAND UP! - Twill (Digimon Xros Wars Hunters OP)* Hunters sucked, but the OP slaps.
Kyomu Densen - ALI PROJECT (Another OP) This show gave me a temporary fear of umbrellas, but this OP is good.
Complication - ROOKiEZ is PUNK’D (Durarara!! OP2)
Light My Fire - KOTOKO (Shakugan no Shana III Final OP)
Mite Mite Kochichi - Memoiro Clover Z (Pokemon Best Wishes ED3)

GO WAY GO WAY - FoZZtone (Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL ED5)
Challenge the GAME - REDMAN (Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL ED6)* I swear to god, this should’ve been the final OP rather than Wonder Wings. I really don’t like that song.
Oh, and if you wanna hear more of the lead singer's voice, he's the lead singer of GIRUGAMESH. They didn't do any anime songs while they were still active afaik, but totally check it out if you like J-Rock.
Sakura Mitsutsuki & Genjyou Destruction - SPYAIR (Gintama OP13 and Gintama: The Final Chapter OP)*
After Cherry Blossoms (all quartets lead to the?) - UNISON SQUARE GARDEN (Yozakura Quartet: Hana no Uta OP)*
Non-Fiction Compass - UNISON SQUARE GARDEN (Yozakura Quartet: Tsuki ni Naku OP)

DAYxDAY - BLUE ENCOUNT (Gintama OP)* Before Polaris, there was this. lol
Goya no Machiawase - Hello Sleepwalkers (Noragami OP)* I swear Noragami has great taste in OPs. lmao
Fate is in Our Hands - Lotus Juice (Persona 3 the Movie #2 Midsummer Knight's Dream OP)* Y'all know Lotus Juice makes EVERYTHING badass.
One Hand, One Heartbeat - Yumi Kawamura (Persona 3 the Movie #2 Midsummer Knight's Dream ED)* I swear I literally feel like crying every time I hear this song. It's just that powerful.
Unravel - TK from Ling Tosite Sigure (Tokyo Ghoul OP) Ok, lemme explain. I used to hate this song cuz I thought TK's singing voice was whiny as hell. But after a long, LOOOOONG time, it finally started to grow on me. I think it's because of all the song covers I've listened to and, after understanding the meaning behind the lyrics, I appreciate this song a bit more nowadays.

Kirifuda (Trump Card) - Cinema Staff (Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V OP4)
Speaking - MRS. GREEN APPLE (Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V ED4)* before Great Escape from Attack on Titan and Inferno from Fire Force, there was this OP and ED. both of which i feel are better songs. lmao
Tweedia - Rei Yasuda (Pokemon Hoopa and the Clash of Ages ED)*
Diver - KANA-BOON (The Last: Naruto the Movie ED)*
Butter-Fly 2015 - Kouji Wada (Digimon Adventure Tri. OP)
Sono Chi no Kioku ~End of the World~ - JO☆STARS ~TOMMY, Coda, JIN~ (Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders OP2)

Clattanoia - OxT (Overlord OP)*
L.L.L. - MYTH & ROID (Overlord ED)

Just Fly Away - EDGE of LIFE (Gundam Build Fighters Try OP2)
Flyers - BRADIO (Death Parade OP) Like Another, this was one of those where i wouldn’t have touched the show itself if my anime club didn’t watch it.
X.U. - Hiroyuki Sawano (Seraph of the End OP)*
Hikari - ViViD (Magi: the Kingdom of Magic OP2)
2016
DiVE!! - Amatsuki (Digimon Universe: Applimonsters OP)*

Chase - batta (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable OP2)* Screw the haters. This song is a bop.
Great Days - Karen Aoki & Daisuke Hasegawa (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable OP3) As you can see, i luv all of Jojo Part 4’s OPs. lmao
Kaze no Uta - FLOW (Tales of Zestiria the X OP)* Zestiria may have been the most uninteresting experience i’ve had in the Tales series, but at least it’s OPs are straight fire.
Dream Lantern, ZenZenZense, Sparkle and Nandemonaiya - RADWIMPS (Various themes from Your Name) I'm still miffed that they didn't kiss at the end. >:v
Re:Re: - ASIAN KUNGFU GENERATION (Erased OP)
Brave Shine - Aimer (Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works OP)*
Starting Over - Mr. Children (The Boy and the Beast ED)* Mamoru Hosoda never ceases to make me smile and/or cry, huh?
GO - BUMP OF CHICKEN (GRANBLUE FANTASY the Animation OP)
KINGS - angela (K Project OP) i don’t even know how i remembered this one. I watched K at my local anime club years ago cuz one of my friends suggested it. I barely remember what it was about, though. ^  ^’
Vision - Kusou Linkai (Yu-Gi-Oh ARC-V ED5)
Light of Hope - Unknown Number (Yu-Gi-Oh ARC-V OP5)
Pendulum Beat! - SUPER DRAGON (Yu-Gi-Oh ARC-V OP6)*

Datte Atashi no Hero - LiSA (My Hero Academia ED3)
Little Pi - Ange☆Reve (Digimon Universe: Applimonsters ED3)
Perfect World - Traffic Light (Digimon Universe: Applimonsters ED4)*
With the Wind - Hiroaki “TOMMY” Tominaga (Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS OP)* I’ll be honest, this one took some getting used to, but now i luv it!
Fake Town Baby - UNISON SQUARE GARDEN (Kekkai Sensen and Beyond OP)
Tonari Au - THE ORAL CIGARETTES (Sakurada Reset ED)*
Rain - SEKAI NO OWARI (Mary and the Witch's Flower ED)* I really liked the movie and I just luved the fantasy vibes given off by the instrumentals in this song.
Baton Road - KANA BOON (Boruto: Naruto Next Generations OP)* Y'all say Boruto is trash, but at least the theme songs still boppin'.
Boku wa Hashiri Tsuzukeru - Melofloat (Boruto: Naruto Next Generations ED3)
FEED THE FIRE - coldrain (King’s Game OP)* Thank you Fire Force for introducing me to this wonderful band. ;w;
2018
PAiNT it BLACK - BiSH (Black Clover OP2)* Never thought I'd ever find a band actually named bish. Lmao
Black Rover - Vickeblanka (Black Clover OP3)
Guess Who is Back - Kumi Koda (Black Clover OP4)* Now, if this ain't a bop fit for a triumphant return like "SURPRISE BISH I'M BACK." then idk what is. Lmao

ODD FUTURE - UVERworld (My Hero Academia OP4)*
Make my story - Lenny code fiction (My Hero Academia OP5)*
The Future is Now - Straightener (Digimon ReArise OP)* Yes, I know I'm cheating cuz it's a video game, but it's an opening sequence much like an anime, so yeah.
Breath - Porno Graffitti (Pokemon the Power of Us ED)
Katharsis - TK from Ling Tosite Sigure (Tokyo Ghoul OP3?)*
Here - JUNNA (The Ancient Magus Bride OP)
Renai Circulation - Kana Hanazawa (Bakemonogatari OP4) Imma be honest, i found this song through those Coldplay mashups and other memes. Lmao
I Wanna Be - SPYAIR (Gintama Shirogane no Tamashii Hen OP)
Hana Ichi Monme - BURNOUT SYNDROMES (Gintama Shirogane no Tamashii Hen ED)*
2019

Inferno - MRS. GREEN APPLE (Fire Force OP)
Veil - Keina Suda (Fire Force ED)* This ED gives me feels and i luv it. ;w;
MAYDAY - coldrain (Fire Force OP2)* This sounds like a song i’d hear at Hot Topic and i feel blessed. lmao
Nounai - Lenny code fiction (Fire Force ED2) I swear this anime doesn’t have a single song i don’t like. I’m not kidding. lmao
WILD SIDE - ALI (BEASTARS OP)* IN THIS HOUSE, WE DO NOT SKIP THIS OPENING I STG.

a o t d !!!
no more than 1 release per artist to keep it interesting. selection and ranking is arbitrary and would prob be wildly different if i did this tomorrow. also i only went down to #42 cause everything after that didn’t feel like real aotd status - at least as far as the specific relationships i built over the past 10 yrs with the music i was listening to
#1 laurel halo quarantine
Tumblr media
nobody did machine-body dialectic like laurel halo in 2012. i loved everything else from her this decade too but every time i listened to Carcass it made me leave my body physically. absolutely unreal album art too
https://laurelhalo.bandcamp.com/track/carcass-2
#2 e+e the light that you gave me to see you
Tumblr media
2012 was a good year. pop/ambient/noise/radio-dj-tag sound collage ascended to spiritual intensity. makes you feel like a child experiencing awe. also fire-gut used to have probably my favorite music video ever but i think it’s gone now
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-p-SSuwW9cw
#3 ilovemakonnen 5
Tumblr media
not to be confused with Drink More Water 5, this one’s from 2010 during his mostly-forgotten diy outsider-pop phase. off-key singing and amateur beats and the sheer absolute joy of making cool songs. all 5 are perfect
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORKpg_-z0Mk
#4 macintosh plus floral shoppe
Tumblr media
would’ve made top 10 on album art alone. music, aesthetics, and cultural impact are inseparable here but going back to the album reminded me just how engaging its 2010s-updated chopped-and-screwed sound is, musically not just conceptually
https://vektroid.bandcamp.com/track/420
#5 jason lescalleet this is what i do 17
Tumblr media
hard to pick a favorite from jason lescalleet’s semi-monthly document of his electroacoustic / field recording / tape loop practice but i’ve cried to multiple tracks on tiwid 17 so it gets the nod. couldn’t find any of them online so here’s something else of his
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t33x8OOm68E
#6 barrio sur बड़ा शोक (heart break)
Tumblr media
dedekind cut guy’s weird one-off side project ended up being my favorite thing to come out of the last few years’ obsession w cowboy/western/country music/aesthetics. pure mystery
https://soundcloud.com/user-366783613/redemption-7inch
#7 cities aviv come to life
Tumblr media
i think maybe people thought cities aviv was just another no-flow pseudo-”conscious rap” type rapper in 2014 but actually this album is nuts. hyper-energetic vaporwave rap? what if death grips were happy? idk
https://citiesaviv.bandcamp.com/track/url-irl-2
#8 beach boys the smile sessions
Tumblr media
this cool fresh 1960s rock myth arrived fully formed and way more fun than the other ones. brian wilson’s concepts and songwriting got so unwieldy we had to wait 50 years to hear the sessions. i don’t care about conversations about his genius or whatever these songs kick ass
https://oldmasterpainter.bandcamp.com/track/surfs-up
#9 mindspring memories & intl. debris international memories
Tumblr media
did this really only come out in 2017? i feel like i’ve been listening to it since i was born. tangential lateral kind of wormhole out of vaporwave into two meditative spiritual infinite-feeling loops that perfectly complement each other
https://noproblematapes.bandcamp.com/track/sad-horizons
#10 nyege nyege tapes sounds of sisso
Tumblr media
absolutely obnoxiously insanely high energy high pitch high bpm dance music. i can’t believe this isn’t what people mean when they say future bass. set me down the path of historical and contemporary non-”global north” ideas about dance/rhythm/bass which i’m still on
https://nyegenyegetapes.bandcamp.com/track/mshamba-video-mster
#11 blithe field face always toward the sun
Tumblr media
the most gorgeous implementation of the sorta-ambient guitar-looping vignette aesthetic. is this a real trope or did i listen to this album so much i convinced myself it was a thing? for me this is the sound of what its like to feel completely content with life and at ease in the moment
https://blithefield.bandcamp.com/track/zen-den
#12 anohni hopelessness
Tumblr media
listening to this album and singing along while driving my car made me feel absolutely disgusting. unbelievable hooks, grossly hi fi sound design, and overblown drama add up to imo a scary effective type of explicitly political or ‘protest’ music
https://anohni.bandcamp.com/track/drone-bomb-me
#13 21 savage, offset, & metro boomin without warning
Tumblr media
why is these 3 pop stars’ vaguely halloween-themed one-off collab my favorite trap album? 21 savage, offset, and metro boomin were all wildly corny in different ways but everything was perfectly balanced. i hope metro boomin makes like one seriously ambient album next decade
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWv-bR_X-VM&list=PLC1uUM4twa8i6zsD_Sn1LRUq4vhl_PLCx&index=11&t=0s
#14 laura les big summer jams 2018
Tumblr media
‘crying in the club’ type bangers with no fear of ugliness and no fear of beauty and no fear of wildly unfashionable tropes like skrillex-y dubstep and guitar solos. so much input from other trans/queer artists it felt like a big t4t party
https://osno1.bandcamp.com/track/the-river-feat-scum-yung-skrrt-and-99jakes
#15 triad god nxb
Tumblr media
the other triad god tape from 7 years later is just as good. what was this man doing in the intervening time? i just imagine him riding london public transit while it rains or something. i love knowing that most of his cantonese spoken-word/rap parts are insults and jokes rather than like, melancholy observations
https://soundcloud.com/hipposintanks/triad-god-remand
#16 dj koze knock knock
Tumblr media
what if pop music sounded like this? somehow every song on here is wildly danceable, wildly sing-alongable, and also wildly detail-oriented. feels like a transmission from an alternate present where things are okay
https://djkoze.bandcamp.com/track/club-der-ewigkeiten
#17  ocora world of traditional music
Tumblr media
box set of “world music” recordings from the label that french electronic composer pierre schaeffer started in the 1950s as a project to teach people in rural west africa how to dj. ethnography can be a fucked up idea but afaik ocora is one of the good ones and if you can sorta try to disengage from the tropes/cliches that get imposed on it, the music is phenomenal. hard to find a track specific to this box set but here’s another from the label
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJm8rn6gW5I
#18 oneohtrix point never replica
Tumblr media
opn feels like an artist i’ve ‘grown out of’ i guess but samples never felt more alive or more dead than they did on replica. set a template for the kind of melancholy ‘soundscape’-y vibe that i spent years trying to find more of after
https://oneohtrixpointnever1.bandcamp.com/track/power-of-persuasion
#19 rihanna anti
Tumblr media
the most perfect imaginable pop album. i keep trying to move it higher up. i almost put club chai vol 1 on this list purely cause of the Woo remix but then i remembered the original is better
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_dDCUKElEwk
#20 colleen a flame my love a frequency
Tumblr media
colleen’s ultra deadpan singing and wriggly rhythmic synth put me in a trance. everything sounded dry as hell even though it was covered in reverb. i think maybe some people were put off by the corny song names and lyrics
https://colleencolleen.bandcamp.com/track/separating
#21 dj paypal drake edits
Tumblr media
back when drake seemed like a sorta-shitty dude rather than seriously creepy, dj paypal used the power of footwork to expose both the melancholy-ambient modality and the serious-bass-music modality latent in his voice and beats
https://mallmusicinc.com/track/brand-new
#22 huerco s. for those of you who have never (and also those who have)
Tumblr media
not really as ambient as it first seems imo, but rather like a really intense focus on what we mean when we describe things as ‘static’ or ‘dynamic’. i know it’s corny but i wanna say these tracks are fully both and fully neither
https://brianleeds.bandcamp.com/track/promises-of-fertility
#23 girls rituals reddishness
Tumblr media
for a track so deliberately shitty-sounding I Know had no right to be so fucking danceable. persona and production synthesized into the only ‘singer-songwriter’ music i could really get into
https://temporaryenjoyment.bandcamp.com/track/i-know
#24 chromatics kill for love
Tumblr media
fakeass 80s retro melancholia digitized and pushed so far past pastiche it turned into pure slime. the phone call in There’s A Light Out On The Horizon came straight from the void
https://soundcloud.com/johnnyjewel/chromatics-kill-for-love-album
#25 actress ghettoville
Tumblr media
the only genuinely post-apocalyptic music. specifically the postapocalypse in wall-e but if there was no wall-e to clean it up
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcCPdfUFq6k
#26 playboi carti die lit
Tumblr media
every beat on this album was reducible to a 4-second loop that perpetually demanded its own repetition and playboi carti somehow knew exactly what to do with them
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2pjiKmhlAI

the charli xcx that came after this was fun, but there was black hole levels of power compacted into when she said vroom vroom on Vroom Vroom

#28 pacific breeze: japanese city pop, aor & boogie 1976-1986
Tumblr media
it’s kind of amazing to think that this compilation only exists because vaporwave aesthetics made ‘japanese grocery-store kitsch from the 80s’ a marketable thing in the us. anyway every single one of these is an absolute bop

#29 young thug barter 6

i can’t get enough of listening to young thug’s voice. i’ve seen his rhythmic-melodic-textural sensibility described as virtuosic and i don’t know really if that term means anything but it feels right to me

#32 mount eerie clear moon
Tumblr media
it’s amazing how well mount eerie navigated the move from a lo-fi sound/mode/affect to a hi-fi sound/mode/affect. clear moon wasn’t his first attempt but it was the one that most embodied the feeling of the new possilibities that had been opened up

Magical Machines In RoL: A short Round-Up
Shortening because this is long.
There’s a surprising number of  magical or mysterious devices we keep encountering:
The Pin in one of the Cat-Girls temple in Moon Over Soho
The Cunning Device in A Rare Book of Cunning Device
Lesley’s Phone-Bomb in The Hanging Tree
“Mary Engine”, (Might be related to Ada Lovelace’s design, as per Peter’s observations, might be some type of early calculator?)
“Some Type of Device” Babbage (Who worked with Lovelace) was working on for the Folly, according to Nightingale
And then there’s Lady Helena’s insistence that her tradition’s Magic Salons go back to Caroline from Ansbach, who, Peter notes, also hung about with one Gottfried Willhelm Leibniz (Who was – hopefully – not a machine, though he did write like he was running out of time and was generally low-key bonkers)
First three are kind of ??? so let’s look at the last three (+) instead
Why the fuck is Leibniz relevant for us?
Now, I’m not one for Great-Man-Histroy, but even I have to admit that Leibniz was, again, kind of off-the-Weird-Genius-charts. If you, say, want a literary or historical counterweight to Isaac Newton in Allsasser-Excentric-Genuis-Bullshit, he’s the man. Literally. Anygays. There are five(ish) things that connect Leibniz to the rest of the RoL Universe;
He’s connected with Caroline from Ansbach, as stated above
He dabbled in alchemy (well, he dabbled in everything)
He got into an academic bitch fight with Isaac Newton (Because either on of them plagiarized the other or they just invented the same Important Math Thing at roughtly the same time – we will never know ~~~)
He either  invented the binary code*  (aka thing that makes Computers go be-bop) or greatly improved it/anticipated a bunch of logic-probelms with it, depending on who you ask
He revolutionized early calculators by inventing the Leibniz Wheel (aka, the things that made Calculators go shrrrrrrrrrr for 200 years before things got funky and analytical)
(All of this is somewhere between the late 1660s – 1716s) (* same problem of the )
Early Calculators and Leibniz Wheels
(Aka a long and rambly part that you can skip if you don’t want to learn about Fancy Early Tech)
Early Calculators where mostly stuff like fancy modefied Abaci, but in the 1640s this french dude Pascal build an Arithmetic Machine, which used interlockign wheels to do what it says on the tin crunch numbers. This machine was both very cool and very suck-tastic; it could do math for you (yay); But it was also super expensive, hard to transport, harder to build, even harder to opperate and therefore prone to human error (boo). It was also limited to addition an subtraction. It didn’t really catch on.
Along comes Leibniz and designes the Leibniz Wheel (which, unlike the A.M.’s wheels, which needed 10 rotations per single digit, only needed a single rotation for any operation involving a single-digit number and could, in conjunction with other Leibniz wheels, carry over into higher digits more easily. He used it to build the first really usable Calculator(s). This Stepped Reckoner (which is what you get when you badly translate Stufenrechner) was easier to operate and it could perform all four basic operations. You could actually use it. Or, as this book puts it:
“The demand for Leibniz’s machines was largely for it’s help in calculating tables of common mathematical functions. In the seventeenth century producing one of these tables might have been a lifes’s work.”
Just, in case you wanted to know how rad people thought this was.
Here’s a link to a video of an animated Leibniz Wheel in use.
Babbage’s Difference Engine and Analytical Engine
Babbage’s Difference Engine (1820s/30s) and Analytical Engine (1830s), genreally considered the ‘first computer’ if they’d actually build it, was basically the attempt to stack as many Leibniz Wheel-ish Wheels (they used a variation, btu it‘s afaik the same concept) as possible on top of each other and operate them all simultaneously by using the technology of Joseph Marie Jacquard’s “programmable” Loom (invented around 1800, uses Punchcards to weave different & complex patterns) to brute-force complex mathematical problems.
The Difference Engine was supposed to use this system to calculate and print mathematical tables. It was supposed to be able to calculate polynoms and use sinus and cosinus and such (!!! I know that sounds easy when we all have a graphical calculator lying around at home like a useless math brick, but this is so cool!)
The Analytical Engine was a step up from this, as it should have functioned without human intervention and was upposed to be fully programmable. It even had something like 10 kB memory space. It was a computer, is what it is.
Now, Ada Lovelace took one long look at that and went “well, clearly this isn’t cool enough yet” because she was born a Byron and Just That Extra. She was also apparently called the Enchantress of Numbers by Babbage ... just ... like ... maybe ... okay.
Anyways, Ada, while trying to explain what the fuck this thing was supposed to do to the general science public, casually invented the analytical computer program. As you do. As you fucking do.
(Still using this book as well as this book btw)
To make this clear: Babbage is that one kid who’s always finished first in Math Class because he actually knows how to make tht Unloved Math Brick Of Ugh do what he wants; Ada is that kid who wrote her own game for her Math Brick, hasn’t payed attention since Grade 6 and is currently reading a college-level informatic book under the table. In the first row, Isaac and Gottfried are throwing chalk at each other. Well, you get what I mean.
The Mary Engine
The Mary Engine is produced in the 1840s and is small enough to fit into the store room’s shelves. It’s not a Differentiation or an Analytical Engine, and probably also not a Stepped Reckoner.
But. This thing is actually incredible. The Mary Engine is TINY.
Babbage never finished either Engine. They only build on around 1900 iirr. Second off, the Engines where fuck off huge. Things the size of the Mary Engine really only came around in the early 1900 or so. ‘Enigmas’ (aka Rotor-Crypto-Machines, which are way less complex then actual calculators), while ‘invented’ shortly after WWI all over the world, only became small enough to be moved comfortably on-person during WWII. How the fuck did they get the Mary Engine that small in the 1840s?
If there’s anything I’m missing (or that I’ve gotten horribly wrong, because I’m a computer noob in the end) hit me up so that I can amend this thing. I don’t really have a Grand Fandom Theory or anything. This is just a list (+ minor explanations) of Cool Stuff. A lot of people probably already know this stuff, but I had fun writing this and it might bring people who weren’t raised in Leibniz-Central up to speed somewhat.
Now, another thing, because someone pointed it out a while ago (and I can’t! Believe! I didn’t make that connection!); Linden-Limmer. I really should have seen that one: I fucking live here. So: Hannover, Germany is kind of a bonkers town.

i think the kikuo thing is that (a) he sort of stopped the sexual side of it in recent years (b) with stuff like gomenne gomenne you can make a case for it being just...a representation of csa, that isn't for the pleasure of pedophiles, but when it's an image? bit more yikes. it's kinda like maretu's case: he'd been writing Yikes songs for ages but we thought that was just his art. then the callout post arrived (i totally see your point too though: it probably should have been questioned more)
(warning for csa/abuse discussions in this post)
ok im not like. really 100% defending kikuo here since i dont have full context, i dont know his intentions behind it, etc. but the reason i made that post was because to me, the outrage over kikuo rn seems honestly A Little performative and.... several years too late i guess?
i’ve seen everything on his pixiv. i’ve known about it for years (note: these comics are 4+ years old) and i havent stopped following him because, well...... to me, the comics on his pixiv ARE a “representation of csa that isnt for the pleasure of pedos”. i’ve (unfortunately) read some actually pedophilic comics before, and the way those comics portray csa vs. how kikuo does it is...... so incredibly different that i really struggle to paint kikuo as just some creep. im not sure if you’ve seen his pixiv anon but if you have, i hope you can see what i mean (if you can stomach looking at it)
im really struggling to articulate my feelings on this well but like..... i guess i’ve always seen kikuo as an artist that (without making too many assumptions) Likely is some form of abuse victim himself, who is literally famous for making explicit csa/abuse content, not for any fetish-y reasons but as vent or horror art. and then someone digs up his old pixiv comics which are the EXACT same as his songs and suddenly, everyone is disgusted by him
i’m genuinely just concerned for people because if you consume this kind of content, you need to be critical of it. if you object to csa depictions in art you cant just excuse it when it’s tied to a catchy beat you like. if you hate kikuo because he draws kids in horrifying situations, then for your sake, and i mean this in the nicest way possible, please never listen to half of his discography again, because his lyrics are much worse. if these comics are to be condemned, why did we as a community consider it acceptable to bop to his songs about violating little kids for all these years? does art, including music, that depicts csa have any value at all, or is it completely wrong no matter what? if anything comes from this i at least hope it gives people a wake up call to examine the media they consume more critically and to try to give an answer to some of these questions
note that im also finding it difficult to discuss this since afaik no one’s translated these comics. i definitely don’t want to push anyone in particular to translate them since they ARE very very challenging works to view and deeply upsetting on many levels, but i wonder if the language barrier isn’t making it easier to assume things about them since we as english-speakers have to just... imagine what kikuo is saying about csa in them, which could very well not be what he intended

Red, Yellow, Black, Teal
(re: this post)
Anon thank you so much before we start I just want you to know I’m so bad at tumblr that by the time I noticed this ask I had to go to my blog and scroll way tf down to find the post again
Red: God oh jeez I honestly don’t remember for sure. I think….. maybe five or six? Maybe younger if I ever watched it while it was on at my grandparent’s house. But I came back to it at 24.
Yellow: I definitely don’t remember the first match I ever watched. I know the first angle I ever, like, noticed was Kumbaya!Stone Cold. The first match I watched as an adult was… whatever the first match was on the go-home Raw for Summerslam 2015. I think it was something Bray Wyatt/Roman Reigns related.
Black: PARADISE LOCK PARADISE LOCK PARADISE LOCK!!!! This is an opinion question that absolutely has a correct answer.
Tumblr media
(Rachel I used your gif I hope that’s okay)
Teal: Hmmmm. That’s a tough one. There are so many great themes in wrestling. I really like SANADA’s theme, like, musically. Shibata has the absolute raddest theme of all time, but it can’t be removed from feelings about Shibata, which makes it difficult. Master of Dropkick is both an unmitigated delight as a song and it heralds the arrival of unmitigated delight as a person, Ryusuke Taguchi, so it’s a win-win. Naito still walking out to Stardust is maybe the best use of a theme in wrestling. It just says so much about him that he won’t change his song. Oedo Tai’s them is dope, and OG Oedo Tai walking out to Wagakki Band’s version of Senbonzakura is absolutely perfect, like, I can’t believe that song wasn’t commissioned for them. Kris Wolf (afaik she still uses it) walks out to Midnight City by M83 which seems like kind of a non-sequitur given who she is (a wolf) but if you follow her and start to see parts of The Actual Person shining through her work it’s kind of devastatingly perfect in a very surprising, nuanced way. I genuinely really like Hana Kimura’s current Stardom theme, Internet Friends by Knife Party, don’t @ me, since I’m apparently also the only person who likes insane raver Hana. I could go on about themes for hours.
HOWEVER
Since there can be only one
The Best Theme is also conveniently the theme song for the best character, best at everything else, best girl of my heart, Tam Nakano, with Violet Kung-fu Girl, it’s a bop okay it’s so good it’s on my iPod and I love her
youtube
Thank you anon for the much needed distraction!
