I keep thinking, because they got the blanket over them, that they were so tired after the 8 hour bed scene that they took a nap together until the behind the scenes staff yanked them up for interview. They look like they just woke up

Justice in the dark, finished ep 2:
I am just so beyond overwhelmed I'm watching it honestly. I was lucky to experience Guardian a year after it came out, which got me into cdramas and cnovels and studying chinese, which got me into priests writing in particular, and i never had to anticipate or hope for guardian. I was lucky to just find it's cdrama version as my first experience period of a cdrama and of the story. It was everything I loved personally (just the perfect niche choices for Me). I never had to anticipate or wonder or hope if an adaptation would exist or be good. Because for me it was already perfect on first watch (yes even horrifically bad cgi cat da qing - I have a particular fondness for awful cgi at times especially in campy shows like Xena and Doctor Who so the low budget only added to my enjoyment personally lol).
Then Word of Honor came out. After id studied chinese for a year, worked a lot to drag myself through reading 28 chapters of tian ya ke and my first significant chunk of reading a priest novel in original chinese. I had OPINIONS. My biggest being they NEEDED to be morally grey fucked up people, needed to lie and put on acts like in the book, and Gong Jun was my dream casting for Wen Kexing but I'd have settled for anyone with a decently fitting performance. My expectations of a live action drama were absolutely blown away. The cast was actually my specific dream cast, Gong Jun pulled a better performance than I've Ever seen him do prior (just perfect in WoH specifically he really did amazing), Zhou zishu is SUCH a hard character to act much like Zhang Qiling in dmbj in that he is quiet and keeps himself private so an actor NEEDS to be really good at the performance to the audience to get across the characters internal world and get the character to come off correctly. He did it. So absolutely blown away by performances as good as Bai Yu and Zhu Yilong did for Zhao yunlan and shen wei, when I had no expectations they'd be As Good only hopefully sufficiently good. So acting was WOW. the side cast actors also absolutely blew me out of the water. The entire show team did honestly - the costumer showed how MUCH can be done with costumes and wig regardless of budget (compare WoH wigs to The Untamed or Eternal Love - just more unique designs for everyone's wigs in woh). The sets are simple but distinguishable and again while it's just a simple X setting in woh I still found the sets more memorable than the Eternal Love sets overall, the fighting is choreographed GOOD (1 I heard by the same person as Ultimate Note which would explain a lot as both have fun action scenes, 2 I love The Untamed in many regards but also there's fight scenes where extras swing at nothing so fight choreography wasn't quite as strong u know), the color design in post production isn't like ideally natural but it shows off the costumes and further makes the limited budget look distinguished as it's own fully realized concept. Way Better than I ever expected honestly (guardian had limited set budget too and honestly it DID look cheap it only was beloved by me because they make it so Ridiculous in certain aspects it Crosses into Doctor Who level weird sci fi design). And finally the script - handled by a good writer, I felt, that kept the core story elements I wanted and added some more. I didn't like the "knew each other as kids" element which if you know me you know why. But since I always treat live action cdramas as Alternate Universe stories? I could appreciate they didn't bring up knowing each other in a like "we are connected cause of it way" but more as a "strangers who briefly crossed paths once and so have some experiences they both somewhat relate or connect to" which let the script writer mostly keep the original novel relationship vibe. Basically? I'm still absolutely stunned and blown away we got a GREAT drama, let alone a good one.
I knew Sha Po Lang had a drama filmed and DONE. I hadn't read it so I thankfully had no great attachment to the story being done right. I was excited because I love priest stories so I know it'll be based on good source material, and I LOVE the idea of steampunk historical. I had no idea on what to expect though besides potentially horrifically bad cgi for the steampunk elements if they didn't cut them out completely? Or cheap but functional cgi like Once Upon a Time in Lingjian Mountain (it'll be miraculous if it's like The Lost Tomb Reboot or Utlimate Note or Love Between Fairy and Devil in terms of quite Decent nice cgi). I had no expectations until an actor I admire was cast as one of the leads. Then I figured: well this will be a GOOD show to watch. Because that actor is worth watching Just by being in it since he'll give a great performance, and the source material came from priest so it can only be so bad. I figured THAT drama was what to mentally prepare for! Then it didn't come! We're still waiting.
Now finally to Silent Reading. It's my favorite priest novel. Of any adaptations to have expectations about, it's this one for me. I made edits for this one. I watched bilibili fanvideo edits for the book and had opinions on which aesthetic choices worked best. I cared. I saw it (like a couple other novels I'm excited for adaptations for) was getting adapted too! After sha po lang, way later, casting dragging on. I assumed okay temper yourself you won't even see it until Immortality 2ha is out (lmao ;-; ). I also decided BECAUSE it's my favorite? I figured I would be disappointed and let down. So I tried not to even hope itd be good. I hoped, desperately, decent actors would be cast who could do a good solid job. I got immensely lucky when Fei Du was cast cause I know from Go Ahead that guy can ACT so at least fei du would be wonderful to watch. I had no idea about anyone else and again tempered my expectations to please please just be Decent. (So Tao Ran being Perfectly cast and acted is blowing my goddamn mind nonstop). I also hoped, for an expectation, a visual aesthetic like Under the Skin or some video edits I'd seen on bilibili. Just a sort of Beyond Evil, Flower of Evil, The Guest, sort of gritty thriller grounded somewhat in reality but at the edge kind of. A detective show with a psychologically heavy lean to it. Possibly a little stylistic even in color choice cause I personally like shows that visually look like Their Own thing (even if it looks less natural - like I love Goodbye My Princess and Heroes visually even though it's such extreme color editing). And finally I hoped for a serviceable bare minimum... bare minimum... solve murders and stick at least basically to the book cases script. I really had no idea what to expect of writing wuality except a "PLEASE be Decent you're working with great source material, it's already got an audio drama with a script u should barely have to work to make this Decent just don't make it awful." So yeah. Low expectations. I probably could have been happy with Granting You a Dreamlike Life level writing quality, visual quality (except dear fuck please with blues instead of that yikes yellow gyadl used a ton), and passable actors.
Instead I got way better than my expectations and it's breaking my mind a little. Color grading? Blue greens and I'm sure some people hate it I fucking love it to pieces. (If I'd give any visual critique it's that I think they're over smoothing actors and I love gritty real looking skin but I recognize a lot of cdramas generally make the choice to face smooth and use filters so it's going to crop up in some stuff I watch :/ it's not totally awful in that I can see Luo's stubble and sometimes Fei Du's cover-up powder on his little nose, but overall the contrast intensity and color grading they chose makes the skin look less gritty in combo with I imagine some skin smoothing filters). I personally Love the cgi I have seen, which i assumr either means cheap cgi came up EONS since guardian or they got bigger cgi budget for a crime drama that shouldn't need them than I would've figured. The city bits that I imagine are fake establishing shots look way better than guardian and in line with Ultimate Note quality at times (at least they're not too noticeably bad is my point). The extreme lighting choices are unnatural for sure but I really like them since there's a heavy metaphor right now of Luo as the light and Fei Du in the dark, and seeing that visual metaphor play out with actual bright lights/intense shadows frequently in scenes is so visually satisfying to me, you can read their mental states just by the lighting (one scene Fei Dus emotions drop and it goes from sunny to storming which is REALLY on the nose and funny but also I love how thoroughly this way of using light is through the entire show). Green and blues also seem to be being used for light and dark, life and death, warmth and cold, Luo and Fei. I never had the expectation so Much detail would be put to visuals and I'm so beyond grateful.
Next, the music. Oh my god the music. So far it's not like Life Changing to me the way Guardians soundtrack was (I love Chen Xuerans music - he also did some Tomb of the Sea music I also love). But I didn't expect the music to even be more than servicable, yet I'm enjoying it enough I want to go look up the tracks? (Also WoH had a banger soundtrack forgot to mention that). I love the choice of piano instruments frequently in the background music, it's extremely fitting of this particular story with priest naming chapters after famous literature and just the vibe of old detective stories. At the same time? Again there's this comparison between a very piano and western orchestra background ost, and the very modern English song that's kind of pop music that Fei Du plays often and with Tao Ran and sometimes plays in scenes with Luo. It's like the light/dark lighting, the music juxtaposition. It's such a noticeable choice, and it really adds to how effective the scenes are. I did not expect the music to shine to me. It's not like WoH levels yet in terms of any particular song lyrics, but the music playing when Fei Du was young seeing his mom, and the music playing at the end of ep 2 as Luo talks to Fei Du about his mom, were both impactfully used.
Writing: not much to say except oh my fuck I can't believe I'm seeing these scenes I love acted out. Acted out properly, like I pictured them. ;-; I'm amazed how much they're sticking to book honestly. I. Am just incredibly overwhelmed moving on. It feels like coming home honestly, a new scene starts and I know exactly where I am from the novel. I actually happen to enjoy when cdrama adaptations change story (Alternate Universe story) so id be just pleasant too if the story Does happen to change, but at the moment this is maybe the most faithful (*except the little sci fi intro note) adaptation I've seen of any book in general in my life. I am so so happy. I loved the scene in Tao Rans car. The scenes of Fei as a child is better than anything I could have possibly ever imagined (Luo coming from the light to cover his eyes and stop the horror, pulling him safe to the light, just the visuals and music absolutely <3 ;-; ). The scenes with Fei Du, Tao Ran, and Luo Wenzhou are just like I imagined them (this may not be true for everyone though lol - I read with the feeling they really were cold and bristly while caring/pushing into each other's business, but not even seeing each other as friend or romantic options at the start - this is coming off just like I imagined, with Tao Ran exactly just... right out of my brain perfect kudos to the guy playing him he's singlehandedly changing my life damn). I saw some people mentioning not seeing much chemistry between Luo and Fei. I may change my mind later but... as of ep 2? I'm happy to say I'm seeing exactly what the novel gave me at the same points in the plot. I actually think the shows giving a Touch more because it's really Really hammering home how Luo and Fei have revolved around each other 7 years, are stuck together in a situation they can't move past, are yin yang light dark warmth cold passion logic alive dead, and those kind of fucking parallels really hammer very obviously that as lovable as Tao Ran is it's really Luo/Fei who are the main characters and who have effected each other's lives most greatly. Yes Tao Ran is Luos best friend and was his partner since their first case of Feis mom - but Luo is who reached out slightly More to Fei Du, who made it his entire purpose to help this kid, who this kid Blamed for being unable to help, who chose to keep trying to take care of Fei for 7 years ever since (Tao ran also doing so because he was involved). Yes Fei Du crushes on Tao Ran as a safe outlet, because Tao Ran won't reciprocate (for a variety of reasons from being straight to thinking of himself as someone taking care of Fei like an older brother - and that emotional position of his is uniquely why he can give such direct advice to Fei that Fei wouldn't take as kindly to as from an actual romantic option like Luo). Fei Du acts emotionally more open with Tao, and certainly tries harder to try and live healthier by associating wirh Tao (and Tao indulges it because it does make Fei feel more human and connected). But it's clear Luos the one who makes Fei face his fears directly, who cuts through the shield entirely, the one who's words actually genuinely shake Fei Du. Tao Ran can call Fei out but on some level Fei won't break from it since it's Tao saying it, can close back up if he does open enough to take it to heart. Luo is fundamentally a person thats Too important to Fei for Fei to control how he handles him. Luo changed his life, was his hope then his hopelessness. And still remains both. The show is absolutely hammering that. Whereas the book? If you didnt know Luo was going to be the main character, you'd figure Fei/Tao was going to be at least an initial ship. Or Tao/Luo if only it was friends to lovers (just me then lol). My point is the shows clear irs got a very specific "bromance" angle and it's hammering it as much as Merlin/Arthur got hammered with 2 sides of the same coin he's your destiny. And more.
Acting again. I also love all the side characters so far. Love the casting choices all around. Zhang Donglan was not how I pictured lol but I liked his actor, the core investigation group is just like I pictured.;-; <3
Luos actor. So eyecandy in a screencap he is not particularly. In motion? He's looks wise passable for Luo. Which is like... when I read the book Luo was traditionally handsome like some superhero (Captain joke from the book and all) but in regular man's roughed up clothes of regular financial means, basic work haircut, could tone himself down if needed. So Zhao Yunlan, while I love him (good job Bai Yu) is too "pretty" to be Luo - the leather jacket too flashy, the whole look just too flashy. Luos styling in the show is acceptable as it looks like an everyday man's less flashy version of Zhao Yunlan, which is about where Luo lands. I imagined a more Model handsome type for Luo just because I imagined him more Abruptly in your face handsome hero (think Captain America) compared to "blends into the background next door neighbor cute" that is Tao Ran (and tbf show Tao Ran is Perfect.... I imagined Yang Yang but dressed/styled toned down, and this actor visually is like a 96% match to an actual fancast edit I made so.. he's perf). Luos actor instead also has a similar "everyday man next door" handsome. On the upside its probably realistic given he qnd Tao Ran should feel on the same level. On the other no its not mu mental picture of Luo - I couldn't even fancast him because he's SO specific in my mental interpretation. But back to the point: as an actor he does look suitable while playing the role. His actual acting? That's where it really matters. When I read, Luo was SUCH a specific character to me if an actor can't pull it off it'll hurt. His actor is doing Perfect. I'm beyond grateful. He's just like Luo in my head. His voice is a touch different but it's acted great so it's fine. The only scenes that jar me are ones where I can clearly know someone edited a scene or added a thing to his costume to make him look like Zhao Yunlan lmao, just because it feels less like Luo and I know it? Like his scene saving a girl from a mugger on a bike was so reminiscent of show Guardian Zhao Yunlan getting off the motorbike. The glasses and leather jacket in ep 1 on Luo screamed "similar to Zhao yunlan" but toned slightly down, and the scene he talks to get into the crime scene felt very echoey of Zhao yunlan doing that to get into the first crime scene in Guardian. The actor made it flow fine, and he Feels like Luo so I'm happy as peaches. But there were some moments in ep 1 I think lol either director or writer or someone wanted to reference Guardian or rely on that similarity to give the watcher a familiar impression. The actor is Really nailing the small moments of acting with his team, and the emotional moments with Fei are just so well done.
Anyways in summary? I had so few expectations and they've been far surpassed. I'm amazed how much extra stuff I didn't even want to hope for is also lovely in this. I'm so !!!!

what: period cdrama // 40 eps, roughly 55 mins each  where: youku (you can also dl the app) // youtube // coming up soon on viki (usual disclaimer that i do not use eng subs so i don’t speak to the quality of subs) why: do you love watching a poor little meow-meow get tortured in a variety of ways before he decides to go fuck it, i’ll be a demon lord and kill everyone who wronged me?? do you like enemies to fated to kill you lovers??? do you enjoy PAIN AND SUFFERING??? this is the show for you
meet tantai jin, the cdrama fandom’s newest obsession
Tumblr media
cursed prince of the Jing kingdom who was sent as a hostage to a neighbouring kingdom. he’s been unloved and bullied all his life - think, discarded and left to die by his own father, kicked around by servants, begging for scraps of food, abandoned and slowly betrayed by everyone around him... it’s NOT GOOD buddies, you will watch his life unfold and you will become attached and want to let him do whatever the fuck he wants
surprise surprise this sad pathetic man will one day become
Tumblr media
THE demon lord who destroys all of humanity etc etc. look at this wardrobe upgrade??? amazing. beautiful. bad for humanity but great for him. good job, bud, you did well.
ANYWAY this show opens with demon lord tantai jin (affectionate) going on his lil’ murder spree (understandable). the fate of humanity as we know it to be rests on the shoulders of one li susu
Tumblr media
to defeat tantai jin, she will transmigrate to the past into the body of ye xiwu (tantai jin’s evil wife who whips him every night (not in the fun way sorry buds) and tortures/bullies him for because it pleases her) to try to kill him while he’s weak, before he turns evil and amasses power. this is for the good of humanity!!! but also he’s truly so pathetic in the past that she can’t quite seem to put her heart into it (there’s also this whole finding his evil bone and getting rid of that before she can kill him problem but HMMM) and decides that?? maybe if she shows him some care and love??? she’ll subvert his murdermurdermurder tendencies????
Tumblr media
this is the gist of the show!! there are a few arcs that we go through like all good xianxia cdramas, so we get to see them live through a few different lives (think: ten miles of peach blossom, pillow book etc etc), and every single dynamic between them is SO GOOD!!!!! we have spicy enemies to lovers!! cutesy arranged marriage between strangers to lovers (who don’t communicate enough for them to be happy)!!! star-crossed lovers fated to kill one another!!!
the show is so goddamn pretty!! the aesthetics!!! the cgi!!!! the costumes ohmygod, i have never wanted to buy so many headdresses before
Tumblr media
LOOK AT THIS!!! HOW PRETTY WAS THIS!!!!
Tumblr media
he’s got this whole demon look LOCKED IN who else does it as well as my boy tantai jin
Tumblr media
this show is very PRETTY but make no mistake there will be a lot of angst!!! that’s part of what makes it so good!! luo yunxi does Tortured, Feral and Deranged™ SO WELL i weep every time i see him on screen, i have truly not been Okay since this show started airing, buddies please join me in till the end of the moon hell, you will not regret it, promise 😇✨
⚠❗ few post-finale thoughts so y’all go into it with full disclosure (and can’t yell at me for inflicting pain on y’all, just know what i am also Suffering™) - stop reading from here if you want no spoilers for the show at all.
trigger warning: there is some dubcon in ep 14 (stretches between approx. the 25:00-27:25 min mark) between ming ye and sang jiu
we were all hoping for a happy ending, but this ends on a bad-open scale, depending on how you look at it. @minmoyu has helpfully directed me to a happy audio-epilogue which was apparently shot but didn’t make its way into the episode?? we still dk if the footage will be released as an extra?? we can all form a prayer circle and HOPE i guess
the plot is HMM the further to the end we get, probably because they had to cut the eps down, so it’s a little choppy, esp the last few scenes??? idk idk. it’s a bit exhausting to watch towards the end, because you root for ttj so so much and he tries so so hard and SIGH. i need another few working days to digest this, i’m still a bit :/ about the ending
would i still rec the show, post-watch? yes! this show starts off really solid, and luo yunxi carried the show throughout. like. y’all thought lyx was good in ashes of love?? watch him in this. every single micro-expression was flawless. bai lu’s acting is always so dependable, and it’s the same with this show!
this show has an a+++ ost (i mean it’s got the king and queen of cdrama osts liu yuning and zhang bichen, literally how could this be bad)!! and CERTAIN side characters are so so good (pian ran my baby girl, ye qingyu who grows on you, decidedly NOT bingchang/tian huan/mo nv although i will concede that chen duling’s acting in this show was Incredible).

Youku Trailer Review, Lightening Round
Because I did the same for Iqiyi. But it should be shorter because Youku isn't release that much new stuff. But overall, a line up that I am thoroughly looking forward to.
The Double - Wu Jinyan returning to the role she does best -- looking murderous and ready to slap everyone who wronged her. I'm gonna enjoy Wang Xinyue's character this time (full offense, Zhang Zhe). This looks great!
Kill Me Love Me - i have no idea what this drama is actually about other than Liu Xueyi saying that this is most unhinged MC he has ever played, and there's that image of him in a fur cloak on a sedan looking unhinged. Also Wu Jinyan looking ready to slap someone, part 2. COUNT ME IN!
The Princess Royal - I have probably 5 other posts dedicated to how much I am looking forward to this, so I'm not going to say more. Okay one thing -- the size difference makes me feel things NGL.
Legend of Jewelry - I will admit that Zhao Lusi dramas are hit and miss, but this looks really good! And Liu Yuning's character looks like he might ... survive? this time around? so yay!
The Eternal Fragrance - It might be the only clunker here. Listen, I'm a bit of a Song Wei Long apologist (is he a great actor? no, but he's enjoyable in the right project), and I can watch Ju Jingyi in the right drama. That said, if there are 2 actors that probably brings out the worst in each other's acting, it's these 2. I'll probably still check it out, but I do not have expectations.

China's censorship of Justice in the Dark - some FAQ
Tumblr media
photo cr @ 白夜飛行家 on weibo
Also known as The Abyss/Mo Du/Silent Reading (link goes to a great carrd made by a Mo Du fan) by Priest, the same author who brought us Guardian. The show was dropped on Youku China on the 18th of February and is now on Youku International (VIP needed from ep 3 onwards). 8 episodes have been released. There is no official release schedule yet, though the rumour is 5 episodes every Saturday at 10am China time. Total of 30 episodes, ending on the 11th of March (Yes rumours are this specific).
The English subs are AI generated, and they are not great. I hope they improve the subs as the show gains traction. (I watch on the China ver of the app, but I'll post any egregarious subbing errors if I come across them)
Changes made from the novel
The title, character names and premise has been changed. The ages of the some of the side characters/victims have also been changed. It's clear that scenes have been re-edited and re-dubbed, because some dialogue doesn't match the lip movements (WOH flashbacks anyone?) This is all to get pass censorship. A lot of the story, including the dialogue, has been preserved, and the changes aren't jarring.
Seems like there was a lot of uproar regarding the changes?
The show has been trending on weibo every day since it dropped, for good and bad reasons. Many book fans were upset with the changes on Day 1 and didn't bother watching pass the introduction of the premise, and there were complaints about the suitability of the actors' looks. By Day 2 the comments turned to "hey this isn't so bad??" And now everyone is just badgering youku for the next few episodes, cause they've literally released nothing else about the show since they dropped the episodes.
Has the story been sacrificed to pass censorship?
After watching 8 ep, I don't believe so. The novel covers sociopathy and the darkness of humanity - the show uses a "nuclear accident" as a reason for "genetic changes" in 1.3% of the population - causing these people to lose the ability to empathise with others. This is actually a very smart move because by blaming everything on a fictional, genetic mutation, the show can actually get away with showing the darker, more questionable parts of humanity, without having to censor it too much. The first case of the show mentions drugs and even has a short clip that heavily implies someone seizing from an overdose (you'll miss it if you aren't paying attention). There are underaged victims, and if they continue in this vein there will be more trigger warning worthy scenes from the book included. These things just don't get shown or talked about in c dramas - even if we don't talk about the BL, it's pretty crazy they managed to get this stuff out after the recent censorship changes.
Is the BL still.... there?
There are 8 episodes out so far and to me, it's working. We're not talking WOH level of chemistry here, but ep 3 onwards is when our CP starts paying more attention to each other. There is more than enough "candy" to find if you know what you're looking for. That said, it is not and will never be BL, just an adaptation.
Ok what am I looking for?
Glad you asked! Take for example the show's name change - from 深渊 (shen yuan) to 光•渊 (guang • yuan).
深 - deep 渊 - deep (often referring to a pool, so a deep dark pool, like in a cave) Shen Yuan comes from the novel and is translated as The Abyss, and represents Fei Du (Pei Su in the show)
光 - bright light Guang•Yuan is not a proper term by itself - it's a mash up of the words for bright light and deep pool. The light represents Luo Wenzhou (Luo Weizhao in the show), the one beam of light that penetrates Fei Du's darkness. Hence the English name "Justice in the Dark" is a pretty good translation.
The new names of the characters are Pei Su 裴溯 and Luo Weizhao 骆为昭. See the last character of each name? Su has the radical 月, for Moon in it, and Zhao has the radical 日, for Sun in it. The moon is considered Yin, and the sun is Yang. Together, they are Yin and Yang.
Hey maybe you think that's pushing it, but welcome to the life of a BL adaptation fan 🤣🤣

I really want to babble about how thematically, this ending makes no sense, and it's so contrary to what we've seen up to this point, and how it's not just that it's sad and that TTJ deserves better (though both are true); it's a story about a man who wanted to die that ends up with him… basically committing assisted suicide to save the world, because well, I guess he was right to want to die all along, even though his reasons were ALWAYS because of the cruelty of others, not because of his own self.
Then he finally gains agency and a life that he wants to live, a simple life filled with love and fulfillment that is enough for him, and he doesn't want to die any longer. And it’s taken away from him and he is forced to go back into that mindset of seeking death. He was ready to live. He’d defied fate and he was ready to live. It’s bad. It’s not fulfilling. We already KNEW he would do anything to save LSS and her world. We didn’t need that proven.
It doesn't matter how hard you fight against your fate, how much you love and how much you strive to be a better person, if you are doomed to suffer and die, you will, is what TTJ's story tells us. And if you want to die, you may as well give in, because happiness never lasts.
I also want to ramble about how unfair it was to LSS, who at the end was deprived of agency and essentially just shifted around wherever she was needed, not being allowed to make decisions of her own. How episode thirty-five WOULD have been a much better ending, and if anything, what we see in TTJ's bo’re life in episode thirty-nine reinforces this.
But more than that it's just upsetting to me because this was such a good show, that presented such compelling ideas and did so in SUCH an entertaining way. And yes the scenery and costumes and aesthetics absolutely slapped. It's gorgeous as hell. But also the character dynamics were interesting and complex, and their relationships were easy to get invested in. There were fascinating relationships among the entire cast as well, not just between the leads and couples (XL and TTJ, LSS and Pian Ran). Yes, there were missteps along the way; the dream arc was about twice as long as it needed to be, and even Clam Gege and his sparkles could not save it, the show plodded along a bit in the early thirties (episodes like thirty-three were super disjointed because of time cuts), Mo Nv was added in as a new character for who knows what reason, etc. But nothing is perfect. This is still one of the better shows I’ve watched in a long time, and I was on edge for every new episode. A genuine enemies to lovers story with chemistry and anguish, hatred and tenderness, sometimes all at the same time. I was obsessed.
And… Tantai Jin is one of the best male leads I’ve seen for years. He’s so layered, so interesting, and so heartbreaking, and Yunxi does a beyond incredible job with every moment of his portrayal of him. He’s legitimately a tour de force in the role. Yunxi and Bai Lu both deserved better than this. But a great lead requires deserves a story that lives up to him, and TtEotM isn't that.
I hate that TTJ is going to probably kind of fade into obscurity, at least among English speaking fans, because people are going to be rightfully wary of recommending this drama now. And I can’t blame people, because if I’d known the ending, I probably wouldn’t have watched either. It left me feeling so empty today, and not in a ‘wow hurts so good’ way that true, well done, and cathartic tragedy does.
One can hope youku releases a ‘fix it’ clip like has happened with some other shows, that at least gives a happier ending for TTJ and LSS. Even then, that’s kind of putting a bandaid over a gaping wound, because a lot of the issues with the ending will still exist, but at least it might make it so I can recommend it with a ‘yeah the ending isn’t great, but it’s overall really good.’ And no the audio clip does not cut it.

sugar rush 2022: part two
Tumblr media
Hello everyone! it’s that time of the year where I round-up the candies brought to us from July-December 2022. I have purposely added ones that captured the eyes of fans. I have also included some good old cpn archaeology I posted during these months in the mix. It’s been a good year, filled with ups and downs for the boys and this fandom but our original intention remains the same. to support them the best way we can and keep em safe. I hope this post gives you some year-end happiness and have a good disposition to face the new year ahead. This is the round up of the first half of the year in case you missed it. bjyxszd. 🤍
JULY 2022
• Similar Chongya pose from the SDC 5 poster. I know Youku have their own graphic designers, but this is just a nice coincidence.
Tumblr media
• GG’s GUCCI Link to Love Jewelry
• Video of GG from WDB shoot and he is playing “skipping rocks”. Something that he and Bobo likes to do. They are such kids!!!!
• Bobo is wearing the 🦴 necklace in SDC 5 photoshoot ; Also in the close up images you can see Bobo’s moles and people were quick to compare it to GG. They both have lots of moles— almost like constellations.

• A Rainbow watch appears on XZ
• Posting at the same time
• I am just adding it here but I don’t think it’s a true CPN. Youku’s official account on Twitter posted about XZ. The thing is, he has no projects with Youku apart from Marvelous City. In the meantime we know who their VIP Ambassador is — Yibo. It’s a nice coincidence but I think the account posted since XZ is famous with international fans and frequently trends on twitter, so it’s a way for the account to get some exposure to overseas fans. This would have been more sus to me if the Youku account over at weibo posted about him. Lol.
Tumblr media
• crown symbol appears
• Analysis of XZ’s 7/12/2022 post : yibo checking, green moon, attorney woo kdrama and whales 🐳 ; Also a parallel from the episode & WangXian.
• KXZ posts about the Moon and missing someone. I don’t think they are necessarily cueing CPF because of that. What I got from it is the whole Moon being a symbol of missing someone when you take a picture of it is not CPF imagination. What is also weird is I don’t see solos posting so much about that narrative when the photos were released— it was mostly CPF. Sooooo...
• CPN thoughts on XZ’s 7/15/2022 Oasis post : the number 25 and other coincidences + same carpet as SDC (?) & why he used that emoji.
• 7/17/2022 LRLG Rumor analysis / translation
• There are theories that XZ was at Web’s hotel 7/16, this whole thing is so reminiscent of what happened during BAH/SDC 2020. Where Web can’t wait to get off work. The reason is, Bobo was found to be at the hotel twice within the day. He came back twice. Why can’t he just be on set? People were saying there are so many scenes being filmed but he stayed there for like an hour then went back on set which is 2 hours travel time ( back and forth ). What’s so special at his hotel? 🐰
Then some yellow clowns brought up an interview where Web said he has little time to practice dance — so he does it in the shower. Hmmmmm. 😏
"Dancing certainly is a part of me because it's something I started to learn as a child."
Dancing is his greatest instinct. Despite his packed schedule, he adheres to the principle that he has to be diligent. "Actually, I almost have no time to devote to dancing practice. Usually, I practice to music when I take breaks from work. But that can happen anytime, anywhere. Sometimes I dance during showers, hahahaha,"
Wang Yibo was unable to restrain a laughter.
• On 7/18, this went on HS: Wang Yibo, Song Yier and the Fox Demon King Power Chapter. A rumor that Yibo is gonna star in a Drama. Song Yi is the one who played Baili’s wife in Luoyang. This is not CPN but proof of how quick Yibo’s team is when it comes to refuting rumors. This was quickly denied by big fan accounts and then the producer himself had to speak up and say it’s not true. The point is, if he wants his name out of the HS and a rumor, he will do it. Whether that’s a future project or a potential relationship with someone. Sooooo 🤷🏻‍♀️
• Galaxy brain clowning with WYB’s Lenovo Ad
• Onset of YGY, A bottle of Master Kong Iced tea was spotted. Lol. Yes it is a favorite drink among people in China but what are the odds. A brand endorsed by Yibo. Also this is not the first time that a brand Yibo endorses showed up in GG’s workplace 😏

AUGUST 2022
• The 8/4 coincidence. Back in 2021, YGY wrapped up. This year, One and Only filming ended.
Tumblr media
• During 8.5, everyone was waiting for YBO to post but they didn’t. Yibo went online to delete the automatic birthday banner on his account where everyone can post. What we noticed is GG has a hidden weibo post that appeared around the same time Web was online. We CPN that GG posted something in private just for them. We don’t know at this point what their schedule is but there is some chance of them meeting. It was a quiet birthday on Yibo’s part because of Political tensions.
• BoXiao and Bamboo 🎋
• One and Only behind the scenes has this line : Hope you meet soon. The one who made you a kid again. ; It reminded BXGs of how he and XZ were so child like during filming of CQL. Love makes you act like a child. 🥺
• 8/8, a supposed Yuehua Contract of Yibo was going around where it states he is signed with them till 10/2026. Of course our 2026 sensitive turtle brains are all over it because it’s such a coincidence.
• 8/9, Bobo was photographed leaving Hangzhou and the bone necklace makes an appearance again. SDC photos were also released and we noticed some things like another flower theme 🌺
• 8/10, Bobo’s Big Show Captain Dance teaser was released and so we see another patch. Same place. If you don’t know the CPN to this, it’s the tattoo rumor. This is not the best photo, but do you see the skin toned plaster?
Tumblr media
• Xiao Zhan as the announcement bird for Being A Hero’s broadcast.
• 8/11, Bobo was photographed wearing the bone necklace and this time, it’s out of his shirt. Unlike the other day. This is interesting because the night before there was a hot search about XZ being single. This seems like a message to those who pay attention. He still has the 🦴. The relationship is stable!

• Web’s sus reaction in SDC 5 episode 8, when it was mentioned that the performance will be a sichuan-chongqing love story. Also, the camera only showed his reaction. Shouldn’t it be nathan cause he is always saying that his wife is from Sichuan?
He was also nodding along when Nathan was talking about having a s/o from that region. Lol. Why?

• Both XZ & WYB ; XZS and YBO leveled up their VIP status on Weibo, using the 11.11 deals for weibo membership. XZ did it first and even went on HS midnight onwards. The next day, WYB followed suit and it was public too ; allowing the blog post to be visible. Same with the studios they both published 2 mins apart from each other. Lol. Usually, people will delete this notification or not have it made public.
They both made it into HS too because of it. 😂

Xiao Zhan went online late at night to recharge Weibo membership 442681
Tumblr media
Other accounts did follow as well as celebrities, but the boys and their studios were definitely the first ones.
and then another one, a few days later on 11/5 both studios posted photo sets 10 mins apart. I can understand why XZS will post on the time it did cause it’s 30 mins from the livestream. YBO could easily post at 20:00 since it’s the timeslot of SDC which is not on air that day — they can treat it as a post SDC gift. but no. HAHAHAHAHA! As if we needed any more reason to think their teams are coordinated.

• New Wuji recording BTS shared by Chengyi
• 12/15 GQ MOTY candies
• 12/16 One said Good Night, the other said Good Morning.
Tumblr media
• Chengyi confirms Wuji holding hands + here are my thoughts on this whole thing and a bit of a timeline on things that happened after.
• YBO posted with their IP in Beijing and the time is 17:17. The number is a homonym for “ 一起together”. A coincidence since XZ left at approximately 17:00 to go to BJ. So it’s a clue that they are together in BJ. There were also rumors that Bobo’s new song was recorded this day, so it adds to the CPN that they are together. much more to the speculation that ZZ was there while he is recording.
Tumblr media
• Another fanfic artwork by Chengyi. This time, a fake story about WYB post GQ 2019 ( allegedly ) eating instant noodles after the event. An after work snack. Then the design on the packets are rabbits, so he took a picture and shared it among his circle of friends. People are saying it’s this instant noodle for kids! Hahahahahaha! So cuteeee!!
Tumblr media
• 12/20 Yibo weibo post with the BGM of Lucky + Tencent Starlight Candy being sort of confirmed ( yibo at gg’s rehearsal ). >>> The 10c rehearsal candy being sort of confirmed is one of my favorites from this year. just goes to show that CPNs do come true, especially CPNs like this.
• XZS and YBO using the same word in their captions on the same days! Again, they are dating.
• 12/24 Christmas Eve CPN - revisiting the 2020 GG birthday CPN, same greetings and handwriting ( there are more comparison posts about the handwriting but we’re really not experts but it looks so similar ) , zsww fake rumor about missing you and new tidbits
• Yibo’s new single, concept poster teaser cpn + similarity with GG’s drawing. (1/12) A company posted about their work on the teaser visual and his nye stage, but not the single artwork. Last year, no one even claimed anything. but now someone did but did not own up to all of it. Why not? It’s another one of those things that no one claimed an important piece of artwork connected to yibo.
• Yibo being announced as a performer @ Dragon TV NYE Party and his poster photo being his Douyin outfit. Another example of him using photos from when he was in events with GG.
Tumblr media
• GG showing up in Chonqing wearing green pants that look very similar to what Yibo has been wearing. So the thing is, during his personal time, Web has been wearing a certain type of green pants, even seen in his GQ event rehearsal. Then GG suddenly shows up with a similar looking one. 🙃 People are saying it’s the EPIDEMIC one, and Bobo has a matching black version of that. But it’s too similar to what Bobo was wearing for his past engagements, and knowing that they were both just in Beijing together, it screams borrowing each other’s clothes.
• Single teaser 2/12 cpn
• Like The Sunshine / Like Sunlight Analysis post
• ZZ’s 12/30 weibo video and photos
• For Yibo’s SUPER X Ad, we can see stars and bones in what he is wearing. Another recurring imagery for him. I am personally fond of when he wears skeleton/bones because it’s a connection to the 🦴 necklace.
Tumblr media
That’s a Wrap for 2022! I will be sharing 12/31 candies tomorrow but that is gonna be included in the 2023 post. We have been very fortunate to have these sweets in the latter half of the month and it’s all thanks to XZ & WYB.
See you all next year for another round up! 👋🏼

Costume Cdramas I watched in 2023
My 2nd year with Chinese dramas as my love for costume drama continues.
The title links to where you can watch it (tried to find free legal watches where available)
The Blood of Youth (40 x 45min, filming started in Oct 2021, released Dec 2022) fun action drama with a good dose of comedy, not for people who want lots of romance because they are too busy (and the canon couples don't have enough chemistry, there I said it) to be making out. Good for bromance, ghost ships and/or ace character head canons. Xiao Se's fur collar wins fur collar of the year, Tang Lian is my blorbo of early 2023.
Tumblr media
My Uncanny Destiny (24 x 30min, filmed in autumn 2021, released Jan 2023) My favorite comedy of the year. Don't get turned off by the toilet jokes, it's a gem that spoofs drama tropes, gives you a coherent plot, silliness, fun side characters, a ML that is not afraid of being silly and a FL that plays capable and silly well. This might be a low budget production but they put that money to work. Politics, cross-dressing, found family, sisterhood, enemies to lovers, third wheel bisexual who reminds me of Wen Kexing, over the top villain, himbo villain who works out shirtless all the time, it got it all.
Tumblr media
Wulin Heroes (22 x 45min, filming started Nov 2020, released Jan 2023) I watched this for Li Hongyi and he is incredibly beautiful in this so props to his stylist and cinematographer. BUT it is a badly written and edited low budget romp. If you are not watching for any actor then do not bother. FL is bearable once you realize she is very much of a lets see where this goes kind of character. 2nd ML is a suffering captive prince turned whiny regent played by Zhu Zanjin. So if you want to see Jin GuangYao suffer, you might like his scenes?? It can totally be read as a throuple especially with the New Tales of Wulin Heroes mini series add on. The choppiness might also be a result of the dangai ban??
Tumblr media
No Doubt in us (24 x 14min, 2021, donghua) saw this on netflix and it roped me in with the body switch trope. It's sufficiently entertaining. Though I didn't enjoy the animation style apart from the chibi scenes.)
Tumblr media
Heaven Official's Blessing (season 1, 11 x 26min, 2020, Donghua) It's THAT story and the art style is so pretty. I haven't read the books yet but still got what was going on most of the time. Liked it a lot. Haven't watched the 2nd season yet)
Tumblr media
The Journey of Chong Zi (40 x 45min, filming started in June 2021, released Feb 2023) This xianxia is a mess! But it gave Scorpion King Li Daikun another memorable role with being the FL's protector. Watching Wang Zhoucheng having a ball with his role was fun. Immortal turned demon Wan Jie is so handsome and tragic. It did draw me in but the main couple is just ick so every time they were apart it immediately got better. ML's refusal to take the antidote to ease his obsession was lmao, FL is naive but charming and her demon styling rocks (do not get the hate on the actress, she is selfmade and there are many bad pretty face actresses around but I guess antis attract antis). Oh and there is a bromance between two of Chong Zi's harem members
Tumblr media
Till the End of the Moon (40 x 55min, started filming in Nov 2021, released April 2023) aka my brain rot drama of the year. Drawn in from episode 1 on. Bai Li and Luo Yunxi <3 Pian Ran, Ye Qingyu, Nian Baiyu and Si Ying. <3 I was spamming tumblr with my screenshots, it was a jolly good time to watch this epic tale of love and suffering and saving the world dilemma with a great cast, characters, costumes, sets and soundtrack with the cdrama ppl of tumblr. If this weren't too complicated for cdrama newbies I'd recommend it to all my friends. Do not skip the dream arc (I ended up liking it) or later stuff will make less sense. I'm still annoyed that we didn't get a good extra episode that wraps up some lose ends for the main side characters and that reunion of the main characters but Youku really went nah we better play it safe with censors not liking happy ends for morally grey characters.
Tumblr media
My Queen (24 x 45min, filmed in 2020, released Jul 2021) An FL enters a romance adventure VR game drama that I watched because I needed some fluff between TtEotM episodes. Why pick this among any other sufficiently entertaining dramas that are probably better written and not as forgetable? Because I wanted to watch Hu Wei (rich nepo baby in The Blood of Youth) in another comedy role >_> and ridiculous overacting he did deliver
Tumblr media
The Trust (30 x 45min, filmed early 2021, released Apr 2023) The life action adaptation of the manhua No doubt in us is based on. I dunno why I finished this, I guess I'm not a quitter and needed silly stuff to balance TtEotM angst. For some reason the director thought it would be a good idea to film this like a donghua and it is causing 2nd hand embarrassment. The ML cannot pull off being a woman in a man's body, not even a martial arts nerd like Xu Yu. Like Wulin Heroes it was filmed before the dangai ban but that didn't stop them from having at least two bromances.
Tumblr media
Wanru's Journey (24 x 35min, filming started in Jun 2021, released May 2023) A mess. So IQIYI released this simply to ride on the wave of Ao Ruipeng's The Blood of Youth popularity. Because this got so chopped down because of the dangai ban and it probably wasn't good to begin with. Basically an actress transmigrates into a dangai screenplay and gets between the leads while also making money by writing fic about them (ok this is my reading but she DID release fic and drawings of them). Of course it takes an unnecessarily dramatic turn, instead of staying on the comedy side, cannot remember more of the plot, oops.
Tumblr media
King is not Easy (20ep x 30min, released Aug 2017) I watched this for the body switch trope and Bai Lu. Nice to see her actual face before the fair skin filter got her, entertaining enough, badly written silly comedy with mind mindbogglingly contrived final 4 episodes. It's Bai Lu's drama debut so it's nice to see how far she got
Tumblr media
Destined (40ep x 45min, filming started in Jun 2022, released June 2023) Highly enjoyable. Fell in love with Bai Jingting. What's not to love about a playboy getting put on his path by his wife and them becoming friends, sworn siblings and then lovers in the process? No this is actually about FL finding her thing (trade) and being wildly successful at it, then it's also political, revenge and more. The leads are extremely charming and have great chemistry (the drama suffers every time they are apart lbr) and the writing is good, though people are too perfect and I wasn't into the whole palace stuff.
Tumblr media
My Journey to You (24 ep x 60min, filming started Dec 2022, released Sep 2023) Had me from episode 1 on. Made me buy IQIYI VIP so I can watch it in good quality. Fell in love with Zhang Linghe. Yu Shuxin needs to do all the wuxia while she is still fit. Why waste being able to do the splits on some modern drama? The director sent her mud wrestling and she went for it. Everyone knows she is pretty no need for her to be beautifully put together on screen 24/7. Love the style, the character introductions, the characters, the cast, the chemistry, the story, the way you expect something and something else is going on. While it started out gloomy and remained so for the most part, it surprised me with throwing in more comedy than I expected. The good old idle manchild gets thrown into a position of power story but it's a murderous martial arts clan against another murderous martial arts clan. It's giving you some information but often just enough for getting what's going on just to play with your expectations later, FUN! And I didn't even mention all the other characters because surprise! this is actually an ensemble drama with several intriguing characters. Do not expect for the two leads to be on screen all the time.
Tumblr media
Hilarious Family (24ep x 45min, started filming in June 2022 (?), released Sept 2023) A fun ensemble comedy I watched for Jackie Li. A widow moves to another city to marry off her 4 daughters (a silly man-crazy one, a homely one, a scholar one and a tomboy one). No it's not Pride and Prejudice but yes of course this is a romcom and all women have a love interest. It kind of drops off later on tbh, but still good for the characters and side characters. The success of this in China hopefully means that Jackie Li will get to be getting more comedies to work in after the Queen Lau disaster and people having a problem with her artist alias in 2022.
Tumblr media
Hello There (20ep x 30min, released Jan 2023) I stumbled on this on IQIYI while looking for a light fast watch that will let my brain relax. The ML's best acting moment is when he plays a wooden robot. FL is fun. There are some questionable scenes, standard low budget action comedy fare.
Tumblr media
An Ancient Love Song (14ep x 30 min, released June 2023) A wonderfully written and executed grown up time traveling story, that shows once again that you don't need a big budget to tell a story that draws you in. Ended my palace politics blockade. All this time traveling and no reincarnation in sight. ;_;
Tumblr media
Story of Kunning Palace (38ep x 45min, filming started in May 2022, released Nov 2023) Tieing 2nd with My Journey to You for brainrot drama of the year. The cinematography is questionable, the story is not for teaching perfect courting behavior but those two are just such a good cp in their awkward messy way. Their friends/sidekicks are fun too and bring some comedy to that story though crazy in love ML is serving some comedy too. Props to ZLH for actually trying to grasp the basics of playing qin and not just waving over the strings like other dramas deem it sufficient. Bai Lu is Bai Lu-ing, gathering her harem. Coming into this right after An Ancient Love Song the idea to defeat destiny this time around seemed hopeless to me but this is one of those they are good at making plans and they turn out mostly alright dramas. I hope those two's material for the next years is as good as the two dramas with them I watched in 2023, fingers crossed!
Tumblr media
Currently watching: A Journey to Love and Taoism Grandmaster as well as 2/3 through a LbFaD rewatch that I started in summer.
I also watched a handful of modern dramas (made in Korea and Japan) and some mini-dramas, but that is for another post.
And yes my most watched actors are probably those uncles stuck in Hengdian, might look that up another day.
If I got the time to blog about a drama I usually do it with screenshots so my tag for those posts is excuse my bad quality screenshots. In other cases I just reblog and put my thoughts in the tags.

bruh do you know what's up with silent reading live action? they haven't dropped any other eps. i'm just terrified that they were asked to take it down 🫠 nobody on twitter seems to know anything either. any info on weibo???
(Sorry for the very late reply 💀)
Don't worry if they were asked to take the show down then they wouldn't leave any episodes up. They'll have to remove all the episodes and so far that hasn't happened so don't stress about that *yet*
Nobody knows for sure wtf is happening over at Youku but according to the rumours:
Youku is spacing out episode releases to keep the hype/popularity in check (there's a rumour that platforms are being allowed to air their dangai but they must make sure it doesn't get too popular (yeahhh good luck with that one buddy😂) and that's probably also why Youku isn't marketing it too much)
Youku higher ups allegedly can't decide how to deal with the show's promotion. They'll normally want to promote it like crazy but so far Youku is being extremely lowkey when marketing the show. This is why we think the rumours that platforms were told to avoid promoting their dangai shows too much is true because there's just no way these greedy platforms won't milk their dangai shows for all they're worth.
They're waiting until the Two Sessions/两会 end (meeting of NPC and CPPCC). If this is really the case then the rest of the episodes probably won't be released until the end of March.
Youku was allegedly ordered (by the NRTA? idk) to stop releasing episodes for the time being and nobody knows why. Some are speculating that they were asked to make more edits/cuts and some think they were asked to wait while the higher ups make a decision on...stuff.
Again remember those are all just speculation and rumours I saw on weibo & douban. I'm just a humble melon vendor it's up to you to chigua responsibly

Hi! Hope you are doing well!
Just want to say thank you for all the time and effort you put into making these lists. My watch list has grown exponentially because of them🥰
With that being said, I just finished watching Reunion 2: Mystery of the Abyss or Restart: The Grave of the Abyss (depending where you’re looking) and thought it would be a good rec for you. It’s a quick 1.5 hour movie that is currently free on the international Youku app w/ English subs. It’s a spin-off of the Lost Tomb/Dao Mu Bi Ji series… So essentially great whump and bromance. It was recently released on Nov 4, so hopefully I’m not rec’ing something that you received a lot of asks for.
Anyway, thank you for all that you do!😊
Hello! I’m well! I hope you are, too!
I’m so happy to hear I could help grow your watchlist!!!!
I have absolutely had that film requested and I’m planning on doing it as soon as I possibly can. I will give anything in the The Lost Tomb series a go! Also I’ve seen a lot of clips and GIF sets on here so I’m pretty excited!
Also I want to say this for everyone who visits my blog: Please do not hesitate to request or recommend anything to me even if you’re sure it’s been rec’d and requested before. I say this because there have been times when something actually hasn’t been brought up to me (I’m assuming because people think it has). Also it really helps me see how wanted a list is. I have some dramas that have gotten lists faster because I had so many asks and DMs about it. Please just go ahead and send that ask or DM. I literally want asks and DMs. I love them. I promise you you’re NEVER being annoying. I have people who send both asks and DMs every single day sometimes multiple times a day and I love it!
Thank you and happy whumping!!! 🖤🖤🖤

Bao, Look at the Camera (005)
This is the second time we've seen this outfit of Gong Jun's in fig form - it's so cuddly and cozy looking, it's hard for fig makers to resist! This is the first fig I'm posting about has this name...but definitely not the last!
In fact, I have to distinguish this fig from another "Bao, Look at the Camera" set that I'll post shortly, so I added the fig maker's numbering system to the title. I applaud the fig maker's excellent forward planning - a three-digit number system provides for lots of fig expansion room! This is the 5th fig out of 7 (so far) in this series. But really, they could have 999 figs in the series with all the numbering room they've left themselves!
The inspiration for this fig is two fold. The clothing is from Gong Jun's post of himself from his upcoming TV series Rising with the Wind.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The name of this fig set of course comes from the Word of Honor Concert BTS video that Youku released. Here's the little snippet where you can see Gong Jun turned around to face Zhehan and reading out his lines, not paying attention to the camera at all. Zhehan tells Gong Jun (translated): "Bao, look at the camera, bao".
Here we have a fig of Gong Jun, filming his bao!
Tumblr media
This adorable little fig came with his removable video camera. You can see the little divots in the side of the camera - those impressions are actually for his little fingers to hold. I got a bit nervous when it came time to put the camera in his hand, like I am with any hand-held item - would it fit? or not?!?
Tumblr media
But yep, his little fingers slide perfectly right around the camera for a snug but not overly tight squeeze. Thank goodness. It unnerves me terribly when props don't fit and I worry about snapping pieces off. No losing any fingers around here, please!
Tumblr media
Look at the 1640 on the video camera - too cute! Speaking of cute, the detailing on the scarf is wonderful.
Tumblr media
The details on the pattern of the coat is great here. Not easy to replicate in PVC form! This whole outfit feels very Fall to me.
Tumblr media
He stands up just fine - no teetering here. He really is a great multi-purpose fig to use for all kinds of fig dioramas and sets.
Tumblr media
The print is nice and clean on his coat - sharp straight lines with no overspray.
Tumblr media
Sometimes fig arms can look strangely elongated when they're stretched out or holding things, because the bodies are so small in proportion. In order for the arms or legs to do anything, it requires a bit of fig engineering to get them to actively do things yet stay reasonably proportional. I think the fig maker and factory did a really excellent job on this fig.
Tumblr media
Speaking of fig engineering, the precision of the camera placement means that the camera is well centered, right in front of his right eye.
Tumblr media
The 1640 is on both sides!
Tumblr media
I can see why he is more stable on his feet - I've noticed that when their feet are closer together like this, it helps keep them upright. Assuming the bottoms of the feet are flat, of course!
Tumblr media
Figs with props always have more interesting top down views! I actually really like how the fig maker did his hair - I think it's spot on to the inspiration.
The big downside to this fig is that his absolutely adorable face is partially covered up by the camera. I mean sure, we have his cute closed eye and his delightful crinkled up smile, but we can't see that one big beautiful eye!
Tumblr media
I feel like this fig also has a lot of potential for creative posing as well, definitely by people more creative than me!
Tumblr media
The box for this fig was different than the usual. Plain but nice, and of course with Gong Jun's signature Jifeng blue color.
Tumblr media
The inside has Gong Jun's signature and his birthday. I love it! In that amazing day in the future when I think of something clever to do with the boxes, I am sure this will be very useful. No box card in my box!
Material: PVC
Fig Count: 343
Scene Count: 24
Rating: Look at the camera, bao. Bao, look at the camera!

CW: Immortal Samsara
I’ve been watching Cdramas as they air for a while now. One thing I’m still not used to is how unpredictable their scheduling can be. Announcements for air dates sometimes happen 3 days before the actual date. Sometimes they don’t even make announcements at all and automatically drop the first few episodes without any warning. In the case if Immortal Samsara, Youku announced it hours before airing the 1st episode.
I wasn’t exactly expecting to watch this so soon. But life is full of surprises, this is an example of one of those.
Tumblr media
I have watched the first 13 episodes and I can say that so far this is built like a typical xianxia drama. It follows the same premise. We have a bubbly female lead who has no care for rules, and we have a rigid male lead who has the greater good of the world in mind always.
Then, because of circumstances, they fall in love against their better judgment, and they go through hell because of it. Most of the time, hell is composed of many lives. So far, we’re still seeing which I believe is their first one.
It’s a variation of a story I’ve seen multiple of times, but I don’t care. I haven’t seen any xianxia dramas this year, so by default, I was always going to check this out. The drought made me thirsty.
Tumblr media
I don’t really have that much major criticisms about the show. The first few eps didn’t draw me in. I didn’t really like the initial set up and found it corny sometimes. But as the story progressed, especially the part after the war, it got interesting. It’s still cliche, but I don’t mind. Truthfully, I didn’t like Yang Dan, Yang Zi’s character in the beginning, but she grew on me later on. I still find her annoying sometimes but it’s tolerable now.
Tumblr media
Also, in this drama is a trope I dislike the most: the scheming, jealous, girls that constantly sabotages the main couple. I hate them so much, and the fact that one of them is Yang Dan’s sister, annoys me even more.
I like the ost that’s released so far. The costumes are just okay for me. Visually, it’s not my favorite production. There are some beautiful scenes and I love how it’s colorful and bright.
Tumblr media
Just look at it.
Tumblr media
Beautiful.
Tumblr media
But there are some scenes where the CGI effects are so obvious where you know that the actors and the actresses are just standing there behind a green screen. I think if we’re talking about strengths based on effects, the drama does better when they’re doing full-on CGI.
Tumblr media
The most surprising for my experience so far, is how much I enjoy Cheng Yi’s character, Ying Yuan. He’s the typical cold main male character you often find in almost all xianxia dramas but I think what attracts me to him is Cheng Yi’s interpretation of the character. I initially kept track of this drama because of Yang Zi, but this made me want to check out more dramas of Cheng Yi.
Tumblr media
The eyes. He looks so good.
I actually have only seen him in one drama prior to this, in Love and Redemption. He looks so good in costume dramas.
Tumblr media
Overall, I found it okay. Nothing revolutionary for its genre, but still watchable and enjoyable for me.
I don’t really know much about the original story this is based on, but from what I read, the drama writers have kind of deviated from it. Based on the drama trailer, and from the episodes I’ve watched so far, I think I will need to prepare my heart and my mind for the angst and the constant heartbreak.
Tumblr media
I’m pretty sure at least 2 of those 3 lives won’t have a happy ending.

Note
Not to conflict you more but, given that Dilireba's new drama is practically (with cdramas you can never be sure until the very second they start airing) confirmed to premier next week and it's with Tencent, it's very unlikely that Hyx will air early April, at earliest will be at the end of April. So, you do have some time to reach the love confession in chapter 179 and the honeymoon phase that follows in the several next ones until everything goes to hell. Just saying.
diliraba has a new drama coming out?? Mmm. I am inclined to agree hyx probably won’t air when we think it will, since we Still haven’t even seen a trailer. It just keeps... releasing very little news. I was expecting at least a trailer and some more promo materials, since the last costume photoshoot release. Especially as we get closer to airing. (Although... at the same time, the air date planned right now is right before chen feiyu’s and i think a character birthday, so they might just decide WHY NOT and start airing it then anyway)
I love your optimism i would make it to chapter 179 in reading before hyx comes out. I do not read fast usually ToT It took me 1 month to read the 250 pages that is a dmbj book. and dmbj books aren’t very literary compared to meatbun or priest. the only exception has been like silent reading by priest that i somehow devoured within a month despite how long it is. i would love to assume i’d read 2ha fast (like last time i think 100 chapters only took me a month). but... i know me and i’ve been reading another novel too much to have time to get through 2ha fast. (then again i never do what i plan so i will let u know with a post probably lol if i end up reading a ton of 2ha this weekend lol).
thank u for the added conflict ToT i will now yet again debate just. starting 2ha again lol
#ask#replies#anonymous#2ha#for real though did you hear news it would delay?#ive heard NOTHING about 2ha's release date from the ACTUAL show team#i would be surprised since. its SO high budget i'd expect more advertizing#but at the same time. word of honor dropped suddenly with NO warning and kicked up advertizing only afterward#killer and healer which ive been following did the same thing only worse. truly NO advertizing at ALL. and then only now that its got a#little dedicated following is it finally advertizing and pushing the show like 20 eps in#i heard love and redemption - another big budget. actually got poor advertizing too#and Rattan? well that was advertized to air then just DELAYED without notice lol#and i watched a chinese vid and apparently youku dedicated resources to some fluff romance advertizing and has been ignoring pushing Rattan#however rattan is SURGING in popularity. like word of honor! because people are loving it#and at least me i agree. i get why its loved. it conciously chose NOT to overplay the romance. to include decent action#to make a genuinely different kind of lead heroine and hero. and a very hotel del luna vibe#also its a modern sci fi. it is breaking the mold so much. im not surprised they didnt wanna advertise it since its a risk being so unique#but its so GOOD because its unique its one of the BG dramas doing really well rn#all im saying is like. hyx is like kingdom hearts 3. who knows when that baby will come out itll be completely unknown then just HAPPEN#Also if im being realistic it BETTER be mo du or guardian i read. guardian cause im 4 chapters in already afgh#but mo du because. literally ive had the urge to reread for 6 months i am fighting myself basically

BL series you recommend?
Since you have enabled me, I will not hold myself back. Let me introduce to you guys my current obsession - the series that has me on a chokehold ever since I came across it. Yes, it's a danmei adaptation. Yes, it's currently one of the most popular drama series out now. Yes, most of you guys might actually know the series already but I'm still going to recommend it because I have full intention to drag some of y'all on the mountain with me.
May I introduce (to those who are unaware) the series called Word of Honor (Shan He Ling/山河令). It's a drama series that has been released for a couple of months now and was adapted from the danmei novel called Faraway Wanderers (Tian Ya Ke) by Priest.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My personal shitty summary on the drama plot without spoiling much:
The story follows the main protagonist, Zhou Zhishu, who was an ex-chief for an assassination orgnization, that has decided to fulfil his last few years wandering and traveling around the jianghu world. During his travel, he clashed upon a mysterious (horny) philanthropist peacock, called Wen Kexing, that somehow got attracted to him and started stalking him wherever he goes. Due to certain unfortunate events, they began an adventure together with their son, daughter and son-in-law. In between all the bickering, flirting and innuendos, they MIGHT have realised that they're actually fucking soulmates and can no longer live without each other.
Tumblr media
It's a 36 episode + 1 extra series where you can watch for free at Youku's official youtube channel. Depends on where you live, the series is also readily available on Netflix and Viki, if you do have subscriptions:
YOUTUBE LINK
NETFLIX LINK
VIKI LINK
The extra episode 37 can only be viewed if you have a paid membership but I've found a link where y'all can watch it for free. PLEASE PLEASE watch the extra episode because it is the TRUE ending to the entire series.
EXTRA EPISODE 37
The drama can be watched as a standalone as the plot does differ quite abit from the novel. I have read the novel before watching the drama and frankly, I think the drama has outdone itself. It EXCEEDED my expectation especially it being a BL adapted drama. The two main leads, Zhang Zhehan (played Zhou Zhishu) and Gong Jun (played Wen Kexing), chemistry are legit OUT OF THIS WORLD. Not only are you served with excellent acting but the tacit understanding and natural reaction between them is very real that when it's portrayed through the screen, you can FEEL the characters’ emotion. Doesn’t help that they look so fucking good together!!!! So yes, watch watch watch!!!!!!
Tumblr media
Oh yes, for those who are interested in the original novel, english translations are complete with extras and you can read them here:

What is Fate?
[Part 4/5] Broadcast/Promotion period
*Since things just unfolds by fate or something, will simply point out the development of fate here
Broadcast
- Because of the updated strict restrictions in BL adaptations, many anticapted adaptations were held back for final broadcast approvals. Since WOH scraped past approvals before the change in regulations (in script), their drama could go up easier.
= The show was broadcasted without strong competitors by this minor fate, which meant they practically had the entire Marketing period in Spring to themselves (in terms of BL adaptation). It was a monopoly situation.
- The broadcast platform was on YouKu which was a mediocre platform before WOH, they weren't as big as the other platforms which were leaders at capitalising - They didn't capitalise the market, which generally gives a very positive image of them.
"This is a drama a mere (YouKu) VIP can watch?"
"BTS is only 1CNY?" Etc etc.
= A fated correct platform to broadcast on.
*YouKu is very very proud of WOH, you can see by their red x blue picture competition to be the cover episode image, Father's day post on Instagram dedicating WKX, activity that has GJ and ZZH in the poster, some footages that were not broadcasted in China was broadcasted for international audience, dedicated Twitter cracks even after the promotion period is over etc.
While YouKu has a lot of unreleased BTS scenes that even Chinese cpfans wants, it is general consensus among fans that they do understand why YouKu can't release them since yea, I mean, like I said, crucial feeling development happened during filming, atrocious terms thrown around by the entire crew so...yea. Everyone, please understand. But keep your burning passion to want to see it with you! (Even though the chances of seeing them is as good as sunbathing in the dark).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- WOH was initially not highly looked upon. It was extremely budgeted in its genre, released cast initially made those little pool of people who followed the development questioned the choices (both were nobodies, their past work didn't represent anything that could make WOH successful), novel fans were the most negative about it, released costume photoshoot was mocked, first episode with ZZS's look had a number of people removing the drama from their watchlist etc.
- To know more in-depth details how this was received at first, feel free to read this askme, answered by Zhongwans. She gave a really accurate general idea on how the Drama was initially perceived by the general early audiences. Feel free to follow her blog as well as she has very detailed explanations on certain topics regarding the drama.
Promotion period
- Starting from here, GJ had the opportunity to climb up towards ZZH's level [Doraemon Saga]
- It was ZZH who groomed GJ's public perception eg. Mimicking his "Wuhu" singing, talking about GJ being happy because of work since it can earn him money, "GJ is perfect in my heart", encourage GJ to show his abs, "GJ is a very real and honest person" etc.
= ZZH could magnify the interesting and positive parts of GJ.
- Meanwhile it was new in the industry to see these two kinds of people:
= GJ's personality: Realistic but comedic. Got into Weibo trending search for singing WuHu in November 2020. It was also his first Weibo trending search. For someone with a giant height and is a very real person - as in he puts his most real side out. New.
= ZZH had a very rich past and with both masculine and feminine side. (Masculine: Consistent history of fixed image with army head, sportsmanship passion in basketball, leg injury, hot-blooded energy in Korea-China Challenge show with Jackson, took a cross-country biking journey with his buddies for a few days(?), in contrast to his Feminine side: first concert, off screen, certain guest appearance in fellow actors past vlogs, with kids, later variety shows - before WOH)
= One who was so passionate he got injured, with both masculine and feminine sides, and one whose personality is radiantly positive and friendly, while being honest in a child-like innocent way at the same time. Different parts of their personality attracted people to get to know them.
= Just being themselves, brings about a relationship, support from others, and interests from people. In some way, it's intriguing.
- Good mix of shows for them which showcased their relationship in the best way possible eg. I'm an Actress: ZZH's uncontrollable body language, Happy Camp: 2 kids in their own world, Ace Vs Ace: "We are a family", also duet interviews where they just sit close to each other as if they are each other's oxygen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
- In solo promotions (eg. Brand endorsements, events etc), watching those livestream, event footage, interviews, you see two of them in one person, endless "Zhang Lao Shi" and a variety of ZZH's facial expressions whenever it's about GJ.
- Their supporting casts eg. Yi Fu, Ye Bai Yi, Scorpion King, etc and their yea-what-you-all-suspect-is-just-as-it-is.
= They had a group of supportive supporting casts
- Because of GJ's modeling background (as part-time cum actor) and his 186cm height, Vogue, LV looked for him. This itself drastically improved his image, status and wealth.
= How many people is born tall, with distinct features, has experience in modelling enough, is an actor who happened to get a good script with good production crew, has Gong surname, be in an era where BL adaptation in China is generally gaining pacing and...okay all coincidences. That's why he could sky rocket a lot of major labels like this to catch up to ZZH quickly.
- Online interactions, which led early CPfans to dig out all the sweets and relationship analysis from 2020 through Instagram, Weibo, Red Book (a china app) etc of them. All mentioned Sagas previously were dug out by fans. ZZH use book quotes/passages since he reads, GJ uses song lyrics since he loves listening to songs with his about USD3k music player. (So when you see their IG posts and captions with books/song references, it's 💯 about their other half).
= The more fans dug, the more they analysed, meant more understanding towards their relationship. CPfans are also a part of their fate.
Bonus Bonus
The last episode officially aired on YouKu was on 27 March 2021. Go back to part 1 in the link below, what happened on 27 March 2020?
