Every single year I comb through our DragonCon content and decide "What can we do better? Where did we falter? Where do we need to improve?" You stand nervously, fingers alternating between clutching and playing with your glass. John isn’t standing with you, but you’d also stressed to him that you didn’t want him to feel as though he needed to babysit you. And while it may have taken a few attempts to push him away from you, John had reluctantly moved away and engaged in conversations with some of his teammates and here you are, standing awkwardly both hoping you had someone to talk to and praying that no-one does just so you don’t have to talk while panicking. 

Wishing you could pull out your phone to give you some distraction, you take another drink instead and glance back around you. Some of the faces here are familiar, and though some of the women close by have spoken to you a handful of times at matches for both club and country, there’s no real familiarity there to enable neither you nor them to come and strike up conversation. You’ve had a few conversations, more small talk than anything, but you haven’t always been standing or sat away from everyone. 

“I’ve been sent to rescue you,” Rúben says as he appears at your side, making you jump slightly. “Sorry, didn’t mean to startle you.” he gives you a warm smile and for the first time since John left you, you feel settled. “Drink?” He offers you a flute of something sparkling and you graciously accept. 

“Rescue me from who?”

“Yourself. Don’t give me that look, I’ve been watching you too. Come my little bird, there’s food over there and I’m hungry.” he says this part loud enough for anyone close by to be listening. When he drops his voice he adds, “John’s stuck talking to someone and needs you as a diversion.”

“Oh, I have to rescue him but he couldn’t do the same.” You challenge as the two of you begin to walk. 

“Thought you didn’t want a babysitter?” Rúben replies quickly and you feel heat begin to burn at your cheeks. “Yeah, he told me. Do you want one?” he asks and gestures to the stack of plates. You shake your head and he picks one up for himself. “I get it, I don’t like these things either.” he confesses, scanning over the table and selecting a few pieces of food to add to his plate. “Especially since becoming single. It’s just you in the spotlight and everyone is looking at you. She was amazing at making me feel calm and as though no-one else was paying attention to us. Something tells me you know how that feels.” It’s not a question and yet it feels a little like one. 

“I get envious of how John can step into a room and just… be John. I’m rehearsing lines in my head before anyone has even spoken to me and more often than not, I don’t even need to use those because no-one speaks to me.”

“I’m speaking to you.” Rúben states, giving your hand a little squeeze before turning away from the buffet now he’s happy with his food haul and begins to make his way, with you in tow, towards John. “If you ever need someone, come and get me.”

“You’re a good man Rú.”

“I know.” he flashes a grin and instead of verbally responding, you swipe something from his plate and eat it with much enthusiasm. 

“Hey!” John beams at you as you approach, his arm reaching out to pull you as close to his body as he can without it seeming too inappropriate. “I missed you,” he mutters into your hair as he places a little kiss into your hair. 

If Rúben had calmed you previously, then John has sedated you. Just having one arm around you, the feel of your body moulding to his, taking in a scent that is only John as well as the scent of his aftershave is enough to leave you feeling content again. 

“He was just speaking about you,” the man standing with John says. His expression is a happy one, there’s no malice in his tone and yet there’s a little panic that begins to rise up in you. 

“Oh is that so?”

“I was talking about the promotion you earnt.” 

Earnt. Not given. John always made sure to use vocabulary that credited you at all times but hearing it tonight made your stomach flip. When you look back at John, he beams down at you with an expression of love and adoration. He had no reason to speak of you when you weren’t close by, but to hear that he was? It made you feel good. 

“Congratulations. Does it come with a bigger responsibility list? I imagine it would.” 

It’s a topic that you weren’t expecting and in a way, talking about yourself makes you feel a little nervous even if it’s an easy topic. Rúben remains with you both, and though each person chimes in at the right moments, John lets you take the heat off him and you find yourself shedding the anxiety the longer the conversation continues. You wouldn’t say you’re “cured” for the night, but he’s making it easier. When Rúben speaks, it continues to keep the mood light and the conversation just as much so. 

Every so often you feel some small gesture from him. A light touch on your arm, a gentle stroke of the small of your back, fingers and thumb at your elbow when he reaches around you for something. Nothing too much, but enough to let you know quietly that he’s thinking of you, he wants to interact but he’s letting you have this moment. This isn’t babysitting and you realise this now, it’s him bringing you to the right people and him trying to gently guide you out of the shell you’ve been hiding in. And this is what you love about him.

     He tried to tell you—he really did, but you weren’t paying him any attention as you sang your heart out to a Taylor Swift song with Jeno. The disco ball and colored spotlights of the karaoke room left everything in a bright glow, but especially you, if you asked him. 

     Last night, Mark had rubbed your back and tried to help you through some cramps, so the second he spotted a dark spot on your skirt, he jumped up and tried to pull you close enough to tell you without the boys and your friends hearing, but you shrugged him off. 

     “Let me sing!” you said, more than a little drunk. “We can dance after this song.”

     “Wait!” He sighed in defeat as you moved back in the center of everyone. A moment later, one of your friends pointed out the spot and your face reddened. When you make it for the hallway, he follows you with your bag that you’d definitely just forgotten to bring to the bathroom.

     You turn on him. “You noticed, didn’t you? Why did you say anything?”

     “I did!” You’re walking fast enough that he’s really working to keep up. “I mean, I tried. You were distracted and it was too loud.”

     “What happened to our rule?”

     Mark frowned. “Which one?”

     “The one where we have to tell each other immediately if there’s something in our teeth, hair, or if we have anything that someone else’s gonna notice!” 

     “You’ve got something in your hair,” he said, reaching over your head where you couldn’t see. Then, he slyly pulled your forgotten bag off the top of your head like a magician might find a coin in a child’s ear. “You forgot this.” 

     Snatching the bag, your drunk argumentativeness faded and you cracked a smile despite yourself. “God, you’re the best.”

Renjun

     It was a wonderful day. It was your debut on live television, and your sweet boyfriend was accompanying you for the backstage festivities. Renjun significantly helped with your nerves, as well. You’d been changed into an outfit picked out by a stylist that was making you exceptionally nervous for two distinct reasons: it was all white and you were on the second day of your period. A disaster waiting to happen.

     When your manager called time, you hurried toward the set where a host was waiting to interview you as Renjun uttered reassurances. His voice calmed you down and you took a deep breath, but then his words cut off mid-sentence. Your head whipped around in his direction to find his eyes wide. 

     “What is it?” you asked.

     He looked around nervously, then leaned closer to whisper, “You bled through a little bit in the back. Just a tiny bit, though!”

     “Oh my god.”

     “Excuse me,” Renjun said, getting the attention of someone on the staff standing nearby. “Can you delay the interview for, like, five minutes? We’re having a last-minute fashion emergency. Thanks.” 

     Using his hands to guide you by the shoulders, he steered you back toward your dressing room. You don’t fail to notice the way he’s intentionally covering you so no one else can see the spot. He helped you find a new outfit and, honestly, you like wearing an outfit chosen by you a million times more than an outfit picked out by a stranger. 

     “You saved my ass,” you said, giving him a quick kiss on the cheek. “Thanks.” 

     “Of course. Now, go. Break a leg!”

Jeno

     You had come over to watch a new horror show with Jeno and his members. The first episode, watched in the dark with only the city lights coming through the windows for illumination, frightened everyone enough that you all agreed to make some snacks and take a bathroom break before resuming. 

     “You guys get scared so easily!” Jaemin said, heading for the kitchen with you on his heels. “It wasn’t that scary.”

     Throwing open the fridge, you reached for a soda. “Easy for you to say, because nothing ever scares you! And didn’t you say you watched it already?” 

     Jeno glanced over as you two kept bickering, which is when he noticed something on your parents. He made a face and said, “Y/N, what’s th—”

     He swallowed his words the best he could the second he realized what it was. However, it was too late. All the boys were looking your way. 

     “What are you talking about?” you asked, examining yourself. “Jeno?”

     Before he could speak, Donghyuck said sympathetically, “You might want to take a trip to the bathroom, sweetheart.” 

     “What, why?” you asked, then your face fell. Your cheeks flushed. “Oh, shit. Please forget this happened.” 

     “Forget what happened?” Jeno inquired, smiling like an angel. “Didn’t mean to call you out like that. Sorry.” 

     You backed down the hall so they couldn’t see the stain. “I’m taking a pair of your sweats for this, Lee Jeno! It’s the cost of betrayal.”

     “Deal!”

Donghyuck

     These past few days had been rough, because your period always gave you severe pain and it was incredibly heavy. While your boyfriend’s first instinct tended to mischievous and taunting, you had given him a fair warning to keep any jokes under control for a few days. He’d surprised you with his capability to take everything seriously. 

     Right now you were trying on tops in front of your full length mirror, searching for the perfect outfit for a friend’s party you both were attending. Hyuck lay on your bed—flopped onto his stomach—watching you with admiration. 

     You caught him staring and pretended not to be flustered. “I’m enlisting you to keep a look out for any leaks tonight. I’d die if I bled through my shorts and somebody noticed. So you have my permission to look at my ass as much as you want tonight. Actually, the more the better. Can you promise to keep a lookout?”

     “I’m off to a bad start then,” he said. “Because you already have.”

     Spotting red on the front of your shorts, you groan and shrug them off. “God damn it.” 

     “Try those black pants you love so much. You might have better luck.” 

     “You’re right! They’d look great with this top,” you said. “Thanks, love.”

      “I’ve got your back, love.”

Jaemin

     Jaemin jogged behind you as you fled down the hallway of his apartment complex. “Y/N, wait!” 

     “No, Jaemin! I can’t believe you did that in front of my mom. I only asked you not to do a few things, but you managed to do all of them like it was a checklist or something? I mean, what the hell? I asked you not to cuss—because she can’t stand that kind of thing—and you dropped an ‘f’ bomb? Then you told her about my Madrid trip even though I specifically asked you not to mention it because I knew she’d try to force me into inviting my rude ass brother, which she did. Now I don’t know if I can even take that trip because she’ll probably send him to my house on the day I leave. It was two things, Jaemin.”

     He caught up to you and let out a long breath. “I am so sorry. I messed up. I didn’t mean to cuss, but the ant on my plate scared me and I blurted it out. And I’m really sorry about your trip. She was asking me about what you’d be up to while I was on tour next month and I accidentally said you would be on vacation, anyway, and I didn’t know how to lie my way out of it. I am really sorry, Y/N.” 

     “Whatever,” you said, running your hands through your hand. “The damage is already done. I’ll just tell my brother he can’t come no matter what Mom says. They can’t ruin it for me. I’ve been looking forward to it for four months. It just makes me so freaking angry that they think they can have so much control over my life and insert themselves in everything I do. It’s ridiculous! I saved up forever for this, but my brother just wants a free trip like always. And my mom thinks I owe it to him because . . . well, I don’t fucking know why!”

     Jaemin’s lips are pressed together tightly. “Hey, um, Y/N?”

     “Yes?”

     “Are you still going to your friend’s party after this?”

     “Yes, but why does that—”

     “This might be a bad time to mention it,” he said, glancing down at your thighs, “but I think you started your period.” 

     Your eyes darkened. “Excuse me? Are you seriously saying that just because I’m upset? I think I have every right to be mad at them and for being a little annoyed that something smaller than a fingernail scared you enough to get you drop the worst cuss word in front of my mother and—“

     “There’s a stain on your pants, I mean.” 

     You looked down. “Oh.” 

     “Yeah.” 

     “I’ll change, but you’re still not off the hook.” 

     But the corner of your mouth twitched as if you were fighting a smile. His face lit up. “I’ll make it up to you. Cook you dinner, clean your room, buy you flowers and—”

     “That might do it!” you called as you rounded the corner and he could practically hear your grin. 

Chenle

     The two of you were at a mutual friend’s party with at least fifty other people, if not more. This house, although rather impressive, had to be near capacity. Chenle had lost you while catching up with some old friends, but now he scanned the room. 

     “Missing your beau already, after three minutes apart?” his friend asked and when Chenle nodded, she added: “Y/N seems really amazing. You’re lucky to have her.” 

     “Damn right I am,” he said, not looking at her. He caught sight of you laughing with a guy he didn’t recognize, leaning against the kitchen counter. There was a red solo cup in your hand. Then Chenle saw your shorts. “Uh oh. It was nice to see you again, but I’ve got to get back to Y/N.”

      She followed his gaze. “Because she’s talking to a guy? Don’t you think that’s a little possessive?”

     “Yeah, yeah. Absolutely. See you around.” He was already walking away. As he came up to you, he leaned close enough to cover your shorts from anyone else’s view. “Hey, babe. Thought I lost you.”

     “Hi!” you said, perking up. “Have I introduced you to Donghyun? We work together.” 

     “No, you haven’t.” Chenle shook the guy’s hand. “Nice to meet you, I’m Chenle. Y/N’s boyfriend.” 

     Donghyun gave you a strange look, shaking Chenle’s hand. “Yeah, you too.”

     “Chenle, can I talk to you for a sec?” Before he could agree, you pulled him aside and he let you. He made sure to cover you with his body the entire way. “Are you jealous?”

     “Huh?” said Chenle. “Oh, you mean of him?”

     “You’re acting really weird.”

     He lowered his voice. “It’s not like that. Aren’t you on your period?”

     “What does that have to do with anything?”

     “Just answer the question.”

     You shrugged. “Uh, yeah.”

     “Then, you’re welcome,” he said. “You leaked through your shorts and I was trying to cover you so nobody else would see. You thought I was jealous! Of that guy? No offense, but really? Him?”

     You shoved his shoulder playfully, which made him burst into laughter. “Shut up.”

     “As if that guy has a chance when there’s literally me right here.”

Jisung

    While sitting a table with you and all his friends, he was thinking about something you said to him once, several months ago. I’m always nervous that I’m leaking while I’m on my period, so if you ever notice any spots, please tell me, like, immediately, you had said. Jisung had promised. And, despite the fact that he had no clue how to pull this off without embarrassing you and or exposing the stain to your friends, he was not going to break a promise to you. 

     For now you were sitting and he was the only one who could possibly see the red stain, so he had a moment to think. After great consideration, he pulled out his phone and sent you a text. 

     Nudging your arm softly, he said, “Hey, check your phone.” 

     Confused, you picked your phone up off the table and read his text. Your eyes went big; your voice dropped to but a whisper. “How bad is it?”

     “If you put this on, it should cover it until you can change,” he said, shrugging off his hoodie and putting it in your lap. “I can go find you some pants?”

Once they were in the backroom, Maroon immediately was greeted with the star herself tackling him as she wrapped her arms around him. She didn't say much, but he did not need to hear her say it as he wrapped his arms around her for a warm embrace as did everyone else.

The day for the two ended on the roof of the house where they all resided. They had a little chat.

Hopefully I won’t get side tracked this week with a philosophical “What does it all mean” posting again.  Either way, thank you for reading!

Mark Twain published his book Pudd’nhead Wilson in 1893. Twain had already written other works and had them published before then. He also had already earned his title of a worker of satire by this point. Pudd’nhead WIlson follows three plot lines within the same town: A northerner named David moved to a Missouri town to be a lawyer who gets shunned from the small town and nicknamed Pudd’nhead, A slave woman named Roxy makes a hard decision in the beginning of the story to save her child by switching him with the master’s newborn who looks equal skin tone as her master’s child and born around the same time, and by the end of the novel- An untimely murder mystery that blames innocent men. Twain laces satire throughout the story to master his invested meanings. 

There are two things to remember when reading Pudd’nhead WIlson. The first thing is to remember that this is a society that focused on  ‘The One Drop Rule’. Outlandish ideas and uneducated Psuedoscience held people of this time in a choke hold about the concept that if a white person even had ‘one drop’ of African American blood in them, that they were considered themselves as a black person (which in this time ties them to a life of enslavement and oppression). While the readers are to sympathize with Roxy as a mother, she makes an unbelievable choice in the name of protecting her child. She switches her child for the master’s child who is just a couple days different in age and have the same skin complexion.  The fact that both children are the same color of skin complected with different family lineage shows just how diverse genetics can be. The master’s child was born from two white people while Roxy gives birth to a child 1/16 of Black Ancestry. (A modern day example is looking at pictures of Tamara Mowery’s son who is ‘a quarter of Black Ancestry’ has the same amount as White Passing Actress Troian Bellisario). Genetics work in multiple different complex ways, and children can look the same or different from the counterparts. It were the adults of this time that bothered doing the work to investigate the lineage of each person to strike them out as they do others with Black Ancestry. 

Another thing to take into consideration is the conversation of Nature vs. Nurture. This topic feels like it holds reservation in every conversation these days. Ava: How was the vote decided? Do you think it is more that alliance chats are deciding or one on one conversations? 

I have no idea how many alliances could be out there - which always makes me paranoid so thank you for the reminder ✊😔. I'm not sure how this vote will go and if something is going on behind my back I have no clue if it's alliance or 1-1 based l o l

Ariel: How difficult is it to play with a cast from so many different timezones? Are people scrambling, are votes set well in advance, or is there a different method? 

At first I thought the diversity of timezones is nice and will benefit me because I am not the only one who will be out of the loop. Turns out it's messy cause everyone is out of the loop. Like, is there even a loop? Lol. Like for example, the Navi vote, I am pretty sure it was not properly locked in. The people who voted for Navi, voted and just crossed their fingers and hope that the rest will vote that way. I don't know if I'm making sense. But yeah, the timezones definitely is making it really hard to propely locked in a plan especially when there are too many people in the game. It's nice to have such a diversity though. I am definitely loving it! This cast is trully iconic.

Els: You were not one of the votes for Navi. Did you believe you were in the majority last vote? Are you in the majority this vote? 

There’s no way to ever be sure but I can say that I did have a feeling that I wasn’t in the majority last vote. And like last time, I can only hope that I’m in the majority this round

DJ: Are the same people working together as last round or have things shifted? Are there any lines in the sand drawn? 

Things have changed. Lines have been drawn. Na I got a new number one, two, three and so on... I am not scared anymore. No more getting clingy towards people who showed me kindness on the first day. Sorry Adeline. Peace out!

Clefford: Your name came up once again last tribal council but you stated you were comfortable. Do you expect to see it again and are you still comfortable? 

I always see the worst case scenario in every tribal for less disappointment. It's not me being comfortable, but me TRUSTING the people that I align myself with.

Zukiswa: How hard are people playing at this stage in the game? Do you think anyone is playing too hard?

People are playing very hard and I'm increasingly finding out that I'm slagging behind. MJ plays hard and fearlessly. I'm envious.

Adeline: More items have been bought. Do you think we will see something be played tonight? How do you think the option to buy immunity will affect the game?

The catalogue is way too scary a beast to tackle for me. I’ve personally not wanted to even get close to it. So y’all have your fun but I’m spooked. I think it means there will be lots of different kinds of advantages besides immunity idols, which is gonna be spicy in my opinion.

Dom: You have received votes 2 rounds now. Where do you think you stand in the tribe?

The tribe dynamic is hard to understand at the moment. I feel like before last tribal it was broken into three different tribes solely based on votes. It's always hard to see where you stand within a tribe. I will never underestimate those around me, but at the moment I feel okay.

Julia: You have had a spotlight on you for the last couple rounds. Why do you think this is and how does it affect your strategy? Does having immunity change your strategy for this vote?

The spotlight always found me. Im actually rather shy and dont seek the spotlight - it is not onitially a comfortable place for me. I am not really sure why this happens, but it seems the story of my life, so why not here too? I have learned to expect it and not shy away from its intense focus.However, once it finds me, its brilliance gives me the strength to withstand the heat of its glare. And like a Kalanchoe flower, I turns towards the light and blossom with a vengeance and will not wilt until Ive reached the full extent of my endurance... Having immunity does not change much about my strategy. Nor, does it shield my sense of vulnerability. Im here to play

Evangelina: How does a challenge like Higher or Lower this factor in to the game? Did this change plans for the vote?

Being a game of chance, the game really felt like an equalizer in determining who got immunity/went to Summit. I think it could definitely change voting plans since it gave unexpected people an upperhand.

Cliftone: With everyone's vote from last tribal revealed, were there any surprises to you? What were they?

With the votes being revealed it’s kind of eye opening to see who did and said what, especially with the drama that unfolded post Tribal. I wasn’t really surprised because I’ve had some suspicious about some people and that confirmed my suspicions.

MJ: In this game, what do you think makes a Hero and what makes a Villain? Are there more Heroes or Villains?

In this game, What makes a Hero or a Villian is totally relative to everyone’s strategic perspectives and critical thought patterns. For me, I think what makes a Hero is playing your game and what makes a Villain is playing other peoples game without an independent strategic fluidity. Are there more Heroes or Villains? I think we haven’t had the opportunity to see through who exactly people are for now, because this is just the second round since merge. So I can’t specifically place the Heroes to Villians ratio. But definitely, both do exist.

Interest check: multilingual mdzs creations event

Hey mdzs/cql fandom!

This is an interest check (by @rose-nebulijia and me) for an event that aims to celebrate the diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds of the mdzs fandom.

What we’re proposing

An event aimed at creators of all possible forms of content (fanart, fanfic, edits, gifs, fanvids; to name some examples) that intents to shine a spotlight on the kind of creations that usually get a bit less attention because they are not in English (and consequently might not even get made).

You have a favourite poem in your mother tongue that you really think fits wangxian but you didn’t think if you put it on an edit anyone would reblog it? There’s a line from a song in a language you’ve been studying that makes your heart ache for Jiang Yanli? You’ve always wanted to center a piece of fanart around that very specific word in your favourite language that is untranslatable into English? You have a strong emotional connection to a language and want to recreate your experience studying it in a fic featuring mdzs/cql characters?

Those are just some examples :) Anything mdzs/cql related that is centered around a language you care deeply about would have a place in this event!

Why we’re proposing it

A while ago (cough) @rose-nebulijia and I had a talk and found out that we had many sources of inspiration for fanworks that weren’t in English. Given that this fandom is centered around a source material that isn’t in English and knowing that a lot of people were inspired to study Mandarin because of MDZS/CQL, we hoped that we’d have enough company to center an event around this concept.

With this being a large and diverse fandom, we’d love to see some of that diversity being given an outlet.

Languages, no matter if they are our mother tongue or our second, third or even fourth language, hold a part of ourselves. Our hope is that with this event, we as a fandom can access entire oceans of creativity that, so far, have been relatively unsailed.

Who can participate?

Everyone! With all kinds of original fan content!

Which languages will be accepted?

All of them!

Yes, English, too. Since so much of the tumblr-centric mdzs/cql fandom happens in English, the idea of this event is to give languages other than English a place to shine. This does not mean that we will exclude English language creations. In fact, we will be happy to receive them! As we said, the event is for languages you care deeply about – which can, of course, also be English. This is just a gentle reminder that, if you ever wanted to create something in a language you thought would never get attention on tumblr, this event will the time to do so.

How will the event be structured?

The idea is for this event to run for a week, with each day being under a different theme.

For now, we are aiming for a week in November, since this is after some of the other large fandom events in our orbits are over but before the holiday exchanges start.

Do I need to sign up to participate?

No! :)

All that will be required is that you follow the event blog and post your creations on the day with the theme you created them for, using the tag(s) we will announce once the event is launched.

You can post on as many or as few days as you like.

How will we promote the creations?

We will create a blog for this event where all original creations for the event will be reblogged.
