Honestly one of my favorite ship dynamics that I never see folks talk about is where they're just... Orbiting each other like satellites. A deep closeness, but not quite something explicitly romantic. Everyone around them has conflicting opinions on their relationship, but they never label it. Heartfelt declarations of trust, love, and friendship are non negotiable

"Albie" (main story 11-21)
At the end of Episode 11 (Part 1), we find out that "Albie" is simply a name that Vyn made up on the spot when Rosa asked. He may have been inspired by his own birth name, Vilhelm Richard Albert de Haspran.
In Chinese, Vyn choose the name "阿明". "阿" is a prefix used to form nicknames, "明" can be a name but also means "bright, clear". In Vyn's Romantic Rail Getaway card "Food for Thought", he tells us the meaning of his name:
Tumblr media
You can see the character 明 appear in the word 明亮 ("bright"), although 明 is such a common character that I wouldn't say that this Chinese text alone is enough is sufficient evidence to show the connection between the two names. It's the way that the "Albie" and "阿明" happen to coincide in the name "Albert", which made me take note of Vyn's "careless" choice in name.
If the Chinese name was intended to subtly reference "Albert", I can certainly imagine imagine this as one way to preserve that reference through translation, even if it becomes more obvious. We do have an example of the translation preserving plot-relevant wordplay in a name: Lowe Leare ("Lowly"), originally 萧仁 ("小人", both pronounced "xiao ren" but with different tones). However, there's also an incident of a plot-relevant name being missed through translation, though it was in an event (not the main story) that probably foreshadowed a distant plot point and had infamously bad translation issues.
Anyway, it remains possible that "Albie" is a coincidence. However, after Vyn and Rosa wrap up their conversation about Albie's name, the narration makes a comment on the importance of that moment:
It isn't until the whole case is settled that you are surprised to realize something... You had briefly touched on the key to cracking the case at this very moment.
...which at least gives me enough confidence to not feel silly writing up a whole post about it. We've only seen part of this case, and there's a lot of mystery still surrounding Vyn's behavior so I don't have any definitive hypotheses on why Vyn might have chosen his own name for Albie. Is there something that made Vyn seen himself in Albie? Did the delinquent's attitude remind Vyn of the cruel, stratified world that he was born in? Is he reminded of how people who have imperfections will be tossed aside and abandoned? I guess we'll see when part 2 of this episode is released.

My favorite genre of sci-fi is “small research team goes to a distant plant/star/space station/black hole/etc to study something weird there, and then the weird thing there Wrecks Their Shit.” Can’t get enough of it. “Small research team goes to a deep undersea research station” and “small research team goes to a deep Antarctic research station” are also very good variants of this as long as they get completely rekt by a weird mysterious alien thing there. I love it every time.
It is also important to note that these stories can range from “TPK” to “lone survivor” to “a few losses but most of the main characters come out of this harrowing ordeal alive, if changed” to “everyone survives this harrowing ordeal and they have a new friend now!” but the more characters survive the better the story better be. If it’s a TPK/lone survivor I eat this up and will love it no matter how bad it is (Underwater (2020) starring Kristen Stewart I am vaguing you here. Stupid movie. Saw it on the big screen and loved it). But if most/all of the cast survives, the writing and the story and the characters better be goddamn amazing (All Systems Red by Martha Wells and Wolf 359 by Gabriel Urbina and Sarah Shachat I am vaguing you here <3 )

Not really relevant but had this little thought from doing Jorvik character studies….
I think it’s pretty coincidental that in the storyline after Justin was kidnapped, we start to see Thomas and Jasper rekindle a very broken relationship. This continued of course after Justin was rescued and returned home.
It’s almost like Thomas leveled with Jasper at that moment - he finally understood what made his father-in-law flip a switch all those years ago after losing his only child (and being a widower).
His son was taken from him - his only child, the person he cared for more than anyone else. Thomas had no clue whether he would get him back alive or dead (and, knowing who he was with, the latter was more likely). He realized what it felt like at that moment to lose everything, to be alone. He realized what it felt like to fail your family - your wife, your child. He couldn’t protect them like he felt he should as the husband/father.
That kind of grieve can ruin a person - just like it did to Jasper.
(Just for reference Catherine’s mother (Jasper’s wife) died when Catherine was very young)

Next entry in giant K series comes tomorrow, the next one in two weeks at most, and another one week later. This will end the "original batch" aka the posts I planned before I started losing faith in this series, everything that comes later still looks fresh in my mind ✨
For Christmas period I would like to open my askbox for questions regarding this series! Actually you might send them even now, use anon if necessary. I hope this will give me some distraction for the period and can be a fun activity 🤭

oh right i forgot the real reason i stopped listening to broadway clips was that i've got this whole enormous miserable knot in my chest abt having been too socially anxious to do anything with my once-upon-a-time-very-gorgeous voice once i got spat out of the safe little nest of my high school, and like, most of the time i forget that knot even exists, but when i listen to the sort of music i used to be part of making (proper opera but also showtunes) it's like. this whole fast-forward feelings journey thru 'oh right that didn't actually go away, it's still right there in my throat, just calcified' to 'oh okay we tugged the loose end and it's unraveling and actually it was keeping contained a whole rush of tears like aeolus' bag of winds in the odyssey…'
#like i decline 2 actually cry abt it but. sure am on the verge of it lmao. thick sore throat and all#i always forget that when i'm actually happy i sing to myself. it's been a long time since i did that#i mean also a big problem with voice was like. the gender thing#conveniently being a mezzo is ALSO a gender thing which did more work for me than i realized but#was listening to a jeremy jordan medley ft. on the street where you live from my fair lady and had a sudden flashback#to the year i was like 'what if i sang that for our musical theater showcase' and my voice teacher was like. noooo not a Boy Song 4 Girl U!#but i used to sing that to myself all the time. also‚ hilariously‚ the girl that i marry from annie get yr gun#which is just like. literally i still thought i was a straight girl tho. the sheer level of doublethink this required.#what was happening in my brain.#(i mean obviously what was happening in my brain was that like. i knew the limits of acceptability)#(and so i couldn't know anything else abt myself.)#(like i've said this before but i do strongly wonder what else my brain isn't allowing me to know bc i still live with my dad)#(which is like. SO dumb bc honestly i'm not sure there's anything i could do that he'd kick me out/disown me over)#(certainly not anything sexuality or even gender related idt)#(but it's like. i know where the discomfort line is and emotionally i just. can't bear to exile myself out beyond it!)#(even if my doing so might eventually shift the line out to where it embraced me again!)#(sometimes learning yr own deep unacceptability in childhood 4 adhd reasons)#(and also 'yr mother is so depressed nothing you do will ever please her. have fun trying tho!!' reasons)#(makes you just. totally incapable of deliberately rendering yrself less acceptable as an adult even when it would be good for you)#(anyway like. thinking back to the K in old home videos who was like. confident that they were an engaging delight)#(and like. what a charming jeremy jordan of a performer they could have made.)#(if only my whole upbringing hadn't then happened to me and crushed all the unacceptable self-expression out of me.)#anyway. shh don't look at me it's fine! it's all fine. 🫥🫥🫥#formative#feelingsblogging

“notch” as an exclamation feels so organic in soi that i often forget where it comes from, and im wondering if i should just replace it if it skeeves me out, but im struggling to come up with something that doesnt feel off or unnatural; everything is failing at the ultimate test of ‘how weird does this sound if a character were to say it whilst having sex’ lmao

Given your learning of the banjo, have you ever been pleasantly surprised to 'encounter' a banjo in a song outside the expected genera? I still have to remind myself there's one in Dropkick Murphy's Rose Tattoo lol.
Heck yeah, absolutely! <3 I expect banjo in Celtic or Americana-related material, but there's nothing as satisfying as catching banjo in pop punk or soundtrack scores. Even if it's played poorly, I appreciate the inclusion. As a newly-annointed banjo obsessee, I take note so I can show friends that banjo is more diverse than they think it is, and more omnipresent.
The ones that catch me off-guard tend to be media I'd known a long time but didn't notice the banjo due to my youngness. Watching an Arthur episode after 20 years, and noticing how much banjo was in their music, was a hilarious surprise to me.
The ones that pleasantly intrigue me come from musicians knowingly taking the banjo new grounds, like Bela Fleck's jazz and symphonic works (to be clear, banjo was in jazz in the 1920s, but we've long since forgotten that) or Abigail Washburn's collaboration album with guzheng-player Wu Fei, in case you wanted to hear American and Chinese folk melodies played simultaneously with one another.
There's no reason for banjo to be pigeon-holed. So I am the biggest fan of hearing banjo outside its unfortunate hole of pigeon.
