#but sokka doesn’t find anything funny so forget him

I was rewatching the Southern Raiders so I can re-evaluate how I can write Zuko and Katara’s dynamic and honestly, I forgot how angry this episode makes me. I forgot how angry I get when I remember how people genuinely wished harm upon Katara as a character because of her rightful frustration.
Hers and Sokka’s mother was killed, and it’s only Katara who wants closure. Because Sokka, many episodes ago (”The Runaway”), stated that whenever he thinks about his mother, he can’t remember her face, he can only think of Katara’s. This means that he was able to get over her death, because he had someone who was there who took on all of their mother’s responsibilities.
Katara, meanwhile, had no one. She, an 8 year old girl, took on the cooking, cleaning, sewing, acting as a mother to her older brother, and always looked out for everyone in the gaang by the age of 14. And when does she ever get a “thank you” or anything? Hell, in the episode “The Desert”, she’s the only one who focuses on getting everyone out. Aang is sulking (and she’s still supportive of him), Toph can’t “see” properly and is down, and Sokka is drunk off of cactus juice.
Yet Katara was treated like shit in the episode. She not once got onto Aang for taking his frustration out on anyone, yet he screamed at her “What are you doing?!” when he yelled that he was doing his best.
Also, Water Tribes have major gender roles, and it shows us explicitly that Sokka is closer to their dad than Katara is (not to say Katara doesn’t love him of course, but Katara even lets Sokka go see Hakoda while she stayed behind in Ba Sing Se) and Katara was obviously closer with her mother.
So, pray tell, why no one except Zuko supported Katara? Why did Aang compare losing an animal and losing his culture to Katara losing her mother? None of these are the same. For one, Appa was still alive, and two, a mother is something irreplaceable. Katara losing her mother is what shaped her into who she is today, and Aang got over the loss of his culture because the plot needed him to.
For all that Katara has done for the group, one would assume that they would support her. But no- Sokka told her “she was my mother too, but Aang might be right” (which, again, I point out that Sokka was able to process and get over his grief, while Katara never had a true outlet for hers. She was able to talk about it, but that’s not the same as processing grief), and Aang got all preachy, showing he didn’t trust her not to kill him, despite supposedly “loving her” and being her “best friend”.
The lack of empathy and sympathy from Aang and Sokka is honestly infuriating. And the fandom is only worse.
Did yall also forget Katara is literally 14 years old? Can you seriously tell me that you would be emotionally stable if you were 8, lost a parent you were close with, and found out you can get closure by finding that parent’s killer after they literally reshaped your entire childhood? Everyone processes trauma differently, and it’s especially hard on a teenager.
People literally have more sympathy for Sokka losing Yue, a girl he knew for, what, two days max? Than Katara losing her mother.
The Katara lost her mother memes were never funny. And the hatred for Katara specifically for this episode is really old, tiring, and hypocritical.

Vicarious (Part 1)
Summary: Sokka wants nothing more than to get his life back. Azula is desperate to escape her own life and reluctant to let go of one that she finds significantly easier to handle.
Notes: This is going to be the long fic version of When You Were Me; https://archiveofourown.org/works/34538767
When did his biceps get so big?
He strokes his chin. Certainly he isn’t complaining but he doesn’t remember being so muscular. He supposes that he has been doing his share of training he just hadn’t realized that it has been paying off so splendidly. His face is well chiseled and his beard is coming in quite nicely.
He quirks a brow, he doesn’t understand why he can’t quite seem to keep a lady.
It certainly isn’t his looks.
He likes to think that he is funny and generally nice.
Maybe he doesn’t take things seriously enough? Maybe he isn’t as nice as he thinks he is?
He looks back to himself. Appearance definitely isn’t the problem.
It has to be that he doesn’t take things seriously enough. He thinks that Suki might have mentioned that once or twice. Katara certainly has.
Sometimes it is hard to look at Katara who is so happy with Aang. And Zuko who likes to reach for Mai’s hand and give her quick pecks. Even Toph has found herself a cozy place in Teo’s lap. Most of all it hurts to see Suki so freshly moved on with TyLee.
She smiles so much more now that she is with TyLee. And suddenly things don’t add up again; TyLee doesn’t take things seriously either. If anything TyLee is more bubbly and more prone to avoiding serious conversation.
Maybe Suki had always just liked women. But no, she has made it very clear that she’ll take anyone that she thinks that she connects with.
That isn’t him anymore.
That isn’t him for anyone. Not in the long term.
Sometimes he feel used. He has a few dinners with them, they take things further, and then they leave him. Maybe is just another pretty face and that’s it. Just like Chan and Jet. He gave both of them a try to, just to see if he’d have better luck with men. Of course, Jet was a mistake, he should have known that going in. The two have always hated each other. Chan is a good looking man objectively but Sokka couldn’t seem to pick out a single distinguishing personality trait aside from how much the man talked about his pecs.
At any rate, Sokka is growing tired of trying. Gran Gran–who is very happy with Pakku–had once told Katara that love happens naturally. It can’t be forced.
Maybe that is his problem; he is trying too hard and everyone knows it. The universe itself knows it. And so things are just awkward.
Sometimes, when everyone is on their dates and holding hands, Sokka gets lonely. Even though they all talk to him so much. He is so very lonely.
.oOo.
She tries not to stare at herself for too long because then she will begin to hate herself. At first glance there is elegance and poise. She has a pretty face and a slender body. Her hair and clothes are still tousled from sleep. It should have been combed upon waking. She has stared long enough for confidence to dip into a notion that she could benefit from applying more makeup. And if she stares longer…
She averts her gaze.
But it drifts back.
She can’t help it.
Not when things are so strange that she forgets to question it.
She has now stared long enough to decide that she should probably stop skipping her firebending routine. Long enough to decide that her face is quite plain, nothing to boast about. Long enough to decide that she isn’t good enough for herself.
It would be nice to wake up one day and not have to see her own face for a change. To not have to wake up knowing that she has another day of problems in front of her. The same ones that never seem to get resolved.
Azula has grown to hate mirrors and what they do to her. But she is drawn to them. Or drawn to the misery.
Maybe she hopes that one day, if she can make herself sad enough, people will take notice. Maybe they will reach out to her.
She backs herself away from the mirror and that face that she has grown to hate so much. The face that isn’t good enough. That person who hasn’t been good enough for quite some time now. Not since they locked her away.
Now she likes to lock herself away.
It is easier when she doesn’t have to talk to people.
It is easier when she can observe from a distance–usually from the window. Having just finished a council meeting, one that she had been invited to as well, Zuzu and his new friends–and her old friends–have taken to having a little garden picnic that she was not invited to.
That is fair enough, she tends to make things tense and weird just by sitting silent. Perhaps her silence is what makes the energy so stiff.
She supposes that she could go down there and join them; they never invited her but they also never mentioned that she had to stay away. Not that she can’t take a hint.
She could go downstairs and have herself a spa day, she could go for a walk if she wishes to be flanked by guards, she could practice her firebending or read some scrolls.
Instead Azula finds her way back to her bed and lays down.
This is quickly becoming her favorite pastime now that most things seem pointless; tireless firebending and brushing up on history and war strategies have gotten her nowhere at all, walking is tiresome when she has nowhere to be, and what is the point of getting all pretty and smelling nice when she has nowhere to be?
There is no one to please and she has long since stopped trying to impress herself.
It’s all a lie anyways; her whole life, her supposed destiny for glory. She is a sham and a fraud. And one day she will get the courage to do what she needs to do–to lay down in this bed and just keep laying there and laying there until they find her cold and finally at peace.
An alternative would be nice. Perhaps to wake up with a new face and a new life somewhere very far off. One where she would never have to see her own face in the mirror again.
In such a case Azula wouldn’t have to die but she wouldn’t exactly exist either. And that is just fine by her.
It is probably just fine by everyone else too.
Yes.
She decides that tomorrow will be the day. She has to prepare a few things first.

Hellsite Nostalgia Tour 2023 Day 141
Slash Fiction/Vincent and the Doctor
“Slash Fiction”
Plot Description: Once again on the FBI’s Most Wanted list l, Sam and Dean seek help from a friend of Bobby’s when two Leviathans go on a killing spree as Sam and Dean
Would I Survive the First Five Minutes??: for the first time and given a universe where what the Winchesters face is real, my daily life is the subject of the first five minutes. And…if a leviathan decided to rob my branch, make everyone in there cower in the safe deposit box vault room, and then open fire? No. I don’t think i would survive
This leviathan they caught is pretty funny ngl
Ok. That tracks. He was able to get the boys’ aliases from when their souls were in Cas…that’s how he got the hit on the credit card Sam used
Bobby’s friend is…interesting, to say the least. A lil paranoid
Aw man. No more classic rock aliases. It’s a cash only existence for them now. And electronics? Forget about ‘em
Apparently, decapitation does SOMETHING to the leviathans
Oh nooooo not Babyyyyyy. Poor Dean
Bobby has a therapist?
Alright. Them playing Leviathan who HATE their actual characters IS pretty funny. JESUS. Deans not gonna get that burger he wants so bad
Uggggghhhhhhhhh hate when they download all the info on the person they’re pretending to be
THEY FOUND SOMETHING BY ACCIDENT???
Oh fun!! The leviathans are cops now…aaaaaand they’re back to being the boys
Oh no…is this one going to spill the beans about Amy to Sam? Yup. Thought so.
Dean. That shouldn’t feel good. You just decapitated “yourself”
Are those FBI agents ALSO leviathan?
Ok Bobby and Jody are pretty cute
I knew at least one of them was a leviathan
There’s so much I forgot about this plot line. Is the PRESIDENT a leviathan? Or is he just running for it?
Hey!!! Crowley!!!
Mmmmm…there it is. Omg, the way they keep splitting up. How many times is this? And how many times has that been the right move? Oh, none?
“Vincent and the Doctor”
Plot Description: Terror lurks in the cornfields of Provence, but only a sad and lonely painter can see it. Amy Pond finds herself shoulder to shoulder with Vincent VanGogh in a battle with a deadly alien
I. AM. READY. TO. CRY. (As long as “max” doesn’t fuck up too bad)
The Doctor and the tour guide complimenting each others’ bow ties ❤️❤️
I love seeing them bring all the VanGogh paintings to life
Omg Doc…just say you’re jealous of Amy and Vincent getting along.
LEAVE VINCENT ALOOOONE. HE DIDNT DO ANYTHING. This isn’t his fault
It’s not every day you get to watch the Doctor make a fool of himself while the person he’s helping gets to be the hero, but Vincent’s the only one who can see the alien, sooooooo
(Omg max is so laggy)
Shut. Up. The impressionists were proper painters. You ass
Oh. Amy among all those sunflowers is such a pretty picture
Oh I want to give a long dead painter a huge hug
But now he’s ready to take on the alien. With his paints and canvas in hand
I love when characters who are used to doing things really quickly have to slow down. They get so annoyed. Aang did it when Sokka forced them to walk instead of flying on Appa, and now the Doctor is experiencing linear time. But like…he says this as though he’s never had to stay in places for a few hours
When the historical figure falls in some type of love or admiration for the companion>>>>
I rag on spn for having monsters that look like humans all the time but I also gotta say something about how you only ever see this alien when it’s not engaged in combat with a character. Like, neither can be on screen at the same time
The Doctor calling Vincent Rory 😭😭😭
Oh, it was alone and frightened and it couldn’t see…and now it’s gone
They have such nice moments. Like this one in the field where he describes the sky to Amy and the Doctor
It’s so weird to see them take a historical figure to the “present” (2010). Omg, him just wanting to ask about whatever electronic device that was and the Doctor dismissing it as unimportant
Yeah. 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
That man just had the weirdest and most wonderful day at work and…he’ll never really know it
Oh Amy…your optimism and it getting crushed
I’m getting so worked up over the “for Amy”

zukka + slow dancing? 🥺♥️
dw babes i didn't forget abt these asks 💛 have another bit of hotel sheets from Z's POV
---------------
“Introducing you to some friends, huh?” Zuko teases.
He’s at a level of intoxication where he feels warm towards the whole world and everything looks a little bit brighter, but it’s equally possible that he’s only a little tipsy and it’s the way that Sokka’s been looking at him all night encouraging the rest of the glow.
And even though his cheeks are already flushed from the alcohol, he still feels them heat when Sokka smiles and adjusts Zuko’s collar, his fingers brushing the sensitive skin of Zuko’s neck. Those fingers had just been buried in Zuko’s sides, gripping and pulling with a want that Zuko’s struggling to believe was pretend.
Maybe Sokka’s the type to get horny at weddings.
“In her defense,” Sokka is saying, patting Zuko’s collarbone lightly as he withdraws his hands, “she didn’t seem to know about us.”
Oh, Sadie certainly didn’t—Zuko overheard people talking about Sokka being paraded around. Yes, he agrees that Sokka is gorgeous and tall and funny, but no, he doesn’t agree with available. Not for tonight, anyway.
He glances at the glass that was a casualty of Zuko declaring Sokka’s unavailability. “Want to replace that drink?’
“Nah. Let’s dance.”
Zuko stiffens. “No—”
“C’mon, none of your pretentious art friends are here to judge you. Dance!” Sokka insists and then has the audacity to tweak Zuko’s nose. “For me.”
That flighty thing that feels dangerously like hope rises in Zuko’s throat, and he takes a moment to pause and look at Sokka. His eyebrows are unevenly crinkled in an almost pleading expression, and his smile isn’t so much the Sokka smile—the large and unabashed one he endlessly blesses the world with, the one that first made Zuko notice him among the rest of the customers as Kyoshi Coffee all those years ago—but something more rare. Something soft and fond.
For me, Sokka asked. Zuko will be screwed the day that Sokka realizes those two words will convince Zuko to do anything for him.
He grabs Sokka’s wrist and pulls him back into the ballroom.
The music is lively, swingy jazz numbers dotted with R&B covers, and Zuko admits he’s enjoying himself. Neither of them can dance, really, but a lack of finesse has never stopped Sokka from thoroughly committing to something he finds fun, and Zuko pushes himself to get swept up in it. He doesn’t know how many songs go by, or how they end up with drinks in their hands again, when the trumpet player lets rip a brief solo that then slips into a much slower song than any before.
“Whoa,” Sokka says, smiling and breathing heavier than normal. Zuko meant it when he said Sokka commits. “Major BPM change.”
“We can take a seat and finish these,” Zuko offers. Sokka probably wants the upbeat vibe to go for a while.
“Noooo, no no,” Sokka says, hooking two of his fingers on the front pocket of Zuko’s pants and tugging. It’s amusing because Zuko hasn’t moved. “Slow dance, boo.”
Zuko blinks. “Slow dance?”
“Yeah. It’s like dancing, but slower.”
“Illuminating,” Zuko automatically deadpans, but his mind is frantically flipping through every memory he’s ever had since he was fifteen, and —
He realizes he’s never slow-danced with a partner.
At high school prom, Mai refused to set foot on the dance floor, and Zuko was content to hang out at a table near the back corner of the hotel ballroom, watching their classmates make absolute asses out of themselves for no reason at all. The only time Zuko stepped on the floor that night was when Ty Lee dragged him to dance with her during one of the last slow songs. Her date was busy vomiting in the bathroom after one coconut Svedka shot too many; she hung from Zuko’s neck, forcing him to stoop as he gingerly held her waist and listened to her prattle about Mai for the whole four minutes.
He’s had casual partners, since he and Mai split that spring, but he was never in the vicinity of a dance floor with any of them. Even if he had been, they were all the type to drag him—or be dragged by him—to a more private place after only a couple up-tempo songs.
Zuko feels the glass being pulled from his fingers, and he blinks back to the present to watch Sokka set them on a nearby table. When Sokka returns, Zuko automatically reaches for his waist with both hands, and Sokka snorts. “What are you doing? We’re not at a bat mitzvah.”
He grabs one of Zuko’s hands, and his other arm wraps around Zuko to spread a hand across Zuko’s back, and— oh. His own arm has already found its way around Sokka, curving up so his fingers can curl around Sokka’s shoulder. It puts Zuko right in conversation with the place where Sokka’s chest meets his neck, and he can feel the warmth radiating from Sokka wherever they brush, from their chests to their ribs to their thighs.
“Now we sway,” Sokka says, “and we both do our best to not step on each other’s feet.”
Zuko snorts, tilting his head back to look Sokka in the eye —
FuckfuckFUCK, that’s too close. He could count Sokka’s eyelashes if he wanted to (he wants to), he can smell the whisky on Sokka’s breath even though he isn’t speaking, and he remembers too vividly how it tasted on the balcony some moments ago. And he thinks Sokka might be thinking about its flavor, too, from the way his tongue darts out to —
Zuko turns away and tucks his cheek against Sokka’s chest. “You’re sleeping on the floor if you step on my foot.”
Sokka laughs, and Zuko can literally feel it with his entire body. He takes a deep breath so his scream stays internal instead of releasing external, and he lets Sokka guide their underwhelming, toddling circles.
The trumpet rattles off again followed by a saxophone, both sad and sweet, and Zuko thinks about being held. It’s a different kind of holding than when Sokka grabbed him on the balcony, than when he’s at a bar and he knows exactly where he wants the night to end for him and his date, than when he would put his arm around Mai when they hung out in the dorm because that's what all the guys did when they hung out with their girlfriends in high school.
This holding feels unattached to purpose or motive, and for that, it feels like attaching: here, as he smells that Sokka’s deodorant is working hard to fight the sweat from the last however many songs, as he listens to the dtûp dtûp through Sokka’s chest, there are threads weaving together between them, threads that are new and different in way that catches Zuko off guard because — well. Because he thought he knew everything he and Sokka could be.
Sokka squeezes his hand, and Zuko’s thumb swipes over the back of his in response, a reflex easier than breathing. “Whatcha thinking about?” Sokka asks.
He feels the question with his cheek through Sokka’s chest even as he hears it from somewhere vaguely above his ear, and it occurs to him that Sokka’s neck is right there, kissing distance, grabbing distance, touching distance away. He could feel the voice that’s gotten him into and out of so much trouble in the last seven years.
Zuko untucks his face from Sokka’s chest. “Ask me again,” he says.
“What are you —”
He presses the bridge of his nose against the rise of Sokka’s throat, and Sokka inhales sharply. Zuko waits, their bodies still swaying with the music. Sokka clears his throat—it vibrates against Zuko’s nose—and then repeats, “Whatcha thinking about?”
Zuko shivers. He knows, rationally, that voices are just vibrations of air, but the delusional part of him insists that if he could just figure out a way to shrink himself, he could crawl inside Sokka and find a home in his throat, a space that’s always generous and bright and warm and hums comfortingly with each and every sound Sokka makes.
“Zuko?”
Reluctantly, Zuko opens his eyes and tucks his head against Sokka’s chest again. “I feel close,” he says.
Sokka chuckles, and Zuko squeezes him with the arm around his back. “We are close,” Sokka replies.
He could mean close, physically, or close, intangibly, but Zuko finds that the specificity doesn’t actually matter to him right now. He’s holding and being held with no pretensions, and he— he didn’t realize that this was something missing from his life until now.
He turns his head enough to press a kiss against the soft inside of Sokka’s shoulder, and then they dance, and dance, as a saxophone croons and a trumpet warbles back.

Part 2 of the Zukka Childhood Besties Marriage Pact AU (that’s a mouthful of a name I know)
Well.
Sokka has a very hard time knowing how to react to the fact that his childhood best friend is an actual fucking model. (Well, he doesn’t know that for sure, but he wouldn’t be surprised).
Zuko greets him, and Sokka is forgetting how to speak. Thankfully, Zuko doesn’t seem to notice. He’s asking Sokka how he’s been, what he’s been up to, and all sorts of things. Sokka answers his questions to the best of his ability, and is able to get his heart rate under control just enough to have a good time with his friend.
Zuko is funny. He always has been, but it was usually in an awkward and very Zuko sort of way. Now his remarks come off a little more smoothly, refined with age, and he smiles a more than he used to (albeit still shyly). Hot-headed Zuko has really embraced his soft side over the years.
Sokka, now that he’s had some sort of awakening in regards to his long-buried feelings for Zuko, finds himself falling in too deep.
It sounds silly and rushed. But he’d spent twelve years of school with Zuko. Sokka knows him like family. At least, he used to. And now feelings were rushing back and Sokka is wondering if he’s always had a crush on the guy.
“So,” Zuko eventually asks, “how’d you find our marriage contract?”
“It was in my room somewhere. My dad brought me a box of my old stuff.”
“You swore up and down by that thing.”
“Still do. Offer’s on the table,” Sokka offers as smoothly as he can.
Zuko gives him an amused look. “I’m having a hard time telling if you’re serious.”
“I am.”
Zuko gives him a look. Sokka elaborates.
“Look,” Sokka says. “I’m single. I’m lonely as hell. And you know me, I’m a clingy person. I like having someone around. Now, obviously there’s no actual pressure, but marrying you would be fun and probably the most interesting thing to happen to me in the last few years.”
Zuko laughs. It’s a nice laugh. “You’ve barely changed.”
Sokka grins and continues. “Besides, you know me better than anyone. So all I’m saying is that I’m not opposed to following through with our contract.”
Zuko nods. “I’m here until Sunday. If you want, we should hang out some more. Then we’ll talk.”
Sokka grins. They were just teenagers in adult bodies when they were around each other.
Toward the end of the lunch, they’re saying goodbye and planning to meet again the next day, and Sokka impulsively says:
“Oh. And by the way. You, uh, you aged nicely.”
It’s painfully stupid and he cringes at himself as the words leave his mouth, but it’s the truth, and is more of a tease at the idea of them getting married more than anything.
Sokka doesn’t miss the flush on Zuko’s face before he sweeps some hair behind his ear and stammers out a “Thanks. You too.”
Sokka goes home that night, stares at the ceiling, and wonders if Zuko’s as serious about this as he is.

My headcannon is that Zuko has kissed every member of the Gaang at least once in their lives and here's how I think that'd pan out:
Katara
Completely accidental, the two share a sentimental moment with each other where they both open up (kind of like in Ba Sing Se). Katara turns to kiss him on the cheek as an attempt to comfort him but Zuko is Very Awkward and turns at just the wrong moment and they accidentally kiss. The two walk on eggshells until Katara finally snaps tells Aang what happened but the kicker is that he actually finds it really funny and isn't hurt because it wasn't intentional. It eventually becomes an in-joke between the three of them
Toph
Zuko picks up a very drunk Toph who'd won a bunch of bar brawls and doesn't say anything (he's the most awkward firelord ever he doesn't want to make a scene) but Toph, being drunk, can't tell that it's him because of this and says "y'know I used to crush on you, Sokka" and kisses him before IMMEDIATELY realizing that it isn't him. The next day she goes to the palace and makes him swear am oath of silence about the events.
Sokka
"Can you believe Suki dared me to kiss you for 10 silver pieces? The joke's on her though because I'd do it for free"
Suki
(To Sokka) "Wait you actually did it? What was it like? Actually don't worry I'll find out for myself"
She then immediately proceeds to compare it to Sokka's description while he's there in the room
Aang
Absolutely a prank gone wrong - Aang pretty much tells Zuko "hey did you know Air Nomads used to kiss each other on the mouth to greet each other?" and Zuko isn't gonna argue because his shitty great-grandfather wiped them out!! So he ends up doing this "greeting" to Aang at a Very Formal event and Aang knows he can't embarrass the Firelord here! So it's only years later after forgetting that he "admits it was a prank and Zuko is like "what.

i’m glad i’m not the only one who sees the amazing potential of aang and suki being best friends. do u have any headcanons about their friendship? :)
I love the potential of aang and suki’s friendship, as I’ve talked about at length before. here are some more ideas:
though they first meet on kyoshi island, they don’t really have time to get properly acquainted. sure, suki meets aang and appa and momo, but she wants to maintain more dignity than the rest of the village, seeing as she does have a reputation to uphold, so as much as she would love to interrogate aang about all of his experiences and bask in his avatar presence, she leaves the more overt fangirling to the “civilians” and decides not to bother him. that said, she somehow convinces everyone that feeding the avatar’s animal companions is a job fit only for the leader of the kyoshi warriors, specifically so that she has an opportunity to hang out with appa and momo. she finds sokka feeding momo some nuts and berries and she’s like “wtf sokka that’s my job!!!” and sokka is just so confused because ever since they found momo sokka has been the one to feed him (even though aang promised that momo was his pet, and his responsibility) so he’s like “it’s literally not tho…?” but then he realizes that she just really wants to feed appa and momo herself, and he teases her about it relentlessly.
suki doesn’t talk to aang much while they’re traveling across the serpent’s pass, because they’re both pretty mired in their own shit, and they don’t know each other well enough that either of them could convey their problems to the other. their friendship really begins at the western air temple, the day after suki gets back from the boiling rock and aang insists on giving her the grand tour. suki is so charmed by his excitement over the history of the temple, and all the cool places to explore, and aang is delighted to find that someone actually cares about the temple as much as he does. after months in prison, it’s so refreshing for suki to finally explore a place designed with the value of freedom in mind, and aang has so much fun with her as she willingly indulges all his whims, and suggests games for them to play. that night as they’re all eating dinner, aang says to sokka, “i didn’t realize that suki was so cool and fun and smart – how on earth did you manage that?”
their infamous prank war begins the day after the gang returns from the boiling rock. sokka insists on letting suki sleep in, since it’s her first night free from prison and she’s definitely exhausted, but by 4pm people are starting to fear the worst. just having gotten back from firebending practice, aang’s like “don’t worry guys, i got this” and pulls the classic “there’s a snake in your sleeping bag!” of which he is so fond. suki, still barely awake, lets out a very undignified yelp in front of her boyfriend’s friends and family (and also chit sang), and in that moment, vows revenge. (I shan’t get into the details now, but let’s just say, their prank war lasts years and costs at least a couple international incidents.)
at some point between the western air temple and ember island, suki tells sokka about her time with the kyoshi warriors helping refugees, finding appa, getting captured by azula, and everything that happened after that up to seeing him again at the boiling rock. sokka then relays the story of suki’s sacrifice for appa to aang, because he knows that he must. upon learning what suki did to save appa, aang is so incredibly grateful. he asks her if there’s anything he can do to show his thanks, and suki says, “the avatar’s gratitude is more than enough.” and then she ruffles his nonexistent hair and they hug.
after that moment, aang becomes extremely conscious of all the ways that suki is simply Not Okay. like, she may seem okay, because she has a great personality and is a master at deflecting, but of course aang sees right through her. only, he doesn’t exactly know what to do to help. he’s dealing with his own shit – like, a lot of it – and he knows that sokka is helping her, so aang just reaches out in the ways he knows how: through fun and affection. they hang out together on the ember island beach, and he always makes sure to give her hugs and cuddle with her and it’s nice – it reminds suki of being with the kyoshi warriors; she misses her girls, and even though they’re from different worlds, she and aang are also very similar in a lot of ways – he reminds her of home.
in the aftermath of sozin’s comet, suki is reunited with the kyoshi warriors, and aang is universally recognized as the avatar who ended the war. as they say their goodbyes, they promise each other never to lose touch, even if they must now go their separate ways. but as it turns out, for the rest of their lives, barely a month goes by that they do not see each other. their paths converge constantly. sometimes they go on adventures together by choice, sometimes they are both fulfilling avatar duties and happen to run into each other, sometimes they simply find each other in the south pole, both visiting their best friends at the same time (and sometimes they act as if their encounters are a mere coincidence, when really they have been planning an elaborate prank on the other for months).
aang, suki, and ty lee are the only members of their friend group who are actually fun at parties, and for this reason they basically form an unofficial party planning committee. upon katara’s birthday – which had better be the biggest event of the year – suki’s sole job in the process is to distract sokka for long enough that he does not have a nervous breakdown over making sure that katara’s birthday party is perfect. upon suki’s birthday, it is now aang’s job to distract sokka from having a nervous breakdown, but aang is unfortunately far less skilled at distracting sokka than suki is, and ends up injuring him in the process. all in all, a pretty good tuesday for the gaang.
suki is aang’s cool big sister, which suki finds kinda funny because she spent her whole adolescence idolizing and mythologizing the avatar, and now she knows the avatar personally and gives him forehead kisses every time she sees him and he is always coming to her looking for advice about girls and they get high on the beach together and laugh so hard against the crashing of the waves that they almost forget their trauma. their friendship is a beautiful, precious thing. (yes, they may be engaged in a seemingly endless, futile, needlessly complicated prank war, but at the end of the day, their friendship is crucial, because) they make each other better.
as everyone knows, suki adores momo, and dotes on him like he is her favorite stepson (momo is sokka’s son, so this makes sense). similarly, aang tries to befriend the unagi, though his level of success on that front depends on who you ask.

what do you think of aang's comments in "the southern raiders" and what they meant to katara? I watched that episode recently with my sister who dislikes atla, and assessed similar things to what certain people of the fandom are saying: "aang didn't understand her", "aang was pushing his beliefs onto her", "it didn't seem like he knew her", etc. she was more fair than those people of course because she did say it was realistic that he'd be so worried since she recognizes that he does love her.
Honestly those arguments are all,, tired. They’re outdated. They’re boring. They’re wrong. They’re a result of a fundamental misunderstanding of A:TLA canon. This isn’t to say that those who genuinely, truly believe these arguments are terrible people (obviously not lmao), but somewhere along the line they had a seed planted in their mind that posits them to have inherent dislike for Aang. And honestly? I just feel sorry for them, because not understanding and appreciating Aang means their A:TLA experience really can’t be that great. But I digress!
“aang didn’t understand her”
Oh, what’s the post? Right - “Fandom once again forgets that Aang is the sole survivor of genocide.” Aang understands better than anyone else what Katara is going through*. There is a direct parallel between Aang finding Gyatso’s skeleton and Katara finding Kya’s body. I’m not going to sit here and argue which was more traumatizing (literally can’t stand when people do that) because you can’t quantify grief like that, but it cannot be denied that Aang has experienced something incredibly similar to what Katara has gone through: the loss of a close parental figure followed by finding said parent’s corpse. Not only that, but Aang and Katara both share a unique sense of helplessness intertwined with their grief regarding their parental figures’ deaths. For Katara, there are the questions of:
- what if I wasn’t a waterbender
- what if I had run a little faster
- what if I had fought against Yon Rha back then
All leading to “Could I have saved her?” For Aang, there are the questions of:
- what if I wasn’t the Avatar
- what if I hadn’t run away
- what if I had stayed to fight the Fire Nation back then
All leading to “Could I have saved him?” Both of them feel incredibly guilty on a personal level about the death of their parental figures, thus blaming themselves. Katara tries to push it off onto Zuko/the Fire Nation and Aang tries to suppress it entirely, but ultimately it is revealed how closely they hold responsibility to their chests. For Aang, it comes out in “The Storm.” For Katara, it comes out in “The Southern Raiders.” So, bullshit that Aang doesn’t understand Katara! He understands her grief better than anyone.
Also, many, many people have gone into this before, but Aang’s example of Appa being stolen was not callous/rude/etc. Appa was the last living piece of his culture. Appa is not “just a pet.” People who insist so are the actual ones being callous, not Aang. And, as Aang himself says, “How do you think I felt about the Fire Nation when I found out what happened to my people?” Aang has experienced more hurt at the hands of the Fire Nation than anyone. There’s a great meta here that delves into Aang’s experiences as the sole survivor of genocide. I don’t understand how someone could acknowledge all that Aang has lost (read: he has lost everything) and then argue that he doesn’t understand Katara’s pain. Like, what? Do you have no sense of empathy?
But most importantly, from Katara herself: “Thanks for understanding, Aang.” She says this after her initial dismissal of him. So take it from the source, my friend - Katara believed Aang understood her. Who are we to argue?
*The only exception perhaps being Sokka, since Kya was indeed his mother, too, but it is worth noting that Sokka did not have the same experience of seeing Kya’s dead body or feeling the intense self-blame that Katara did.
“aang was pushing his beliefs onto her”
It is SO funny how those SAME people have NO problem with everyone in the Gaang telling Aang to kill Ozai the finale! Y’know, when they were disregarding the pacifistic beliefs of his people in exchange for emphasizing their, ahem, more aggressive ones? SO funny! I’m laughing SO hard right now!
Heavy sarcasm, in case it wasn’t obvious. They’re hypocrites and they know it.
But, more importantly, Aang was not pushing his beliefs onto her? At all?? Tell me where in the episode Aang:
- refused to let Katara go after Yon Rha
- told Katara what she was doing was wrong
- told Katara that HE was right and that SHE needed to listen to HIM
Here’s the thing: none of that ever happened! Not only does Aang accept that Katara needs to go (see: “I wasn’t planning to [stop you]. This is a journey you need to take. You need to face this man.”), but he allows her to take Appa on her journey. Appa, the last living piece of his culture. Aang has incredible trust in Katara, and his choice to send Appa with her (essentially sending a piece of himself with her) demonstrates this fact clearly. That should end the discussion point blank, but I guess I’ll break down the lines people seem to have issues with:
1) “It’s okay, because I forgive you. [Pauses.] That give you any ideas?”
Honestly, the criticism this line gets is laughable to me. People use it to argue that Aang was being disrespectful to Katara’s feelings and?? I hate to break it to them, but you HAVE to look at the context a line is in if you’re going to judge it. That is Analysis 101: Context is Everything. This moment is used to break tension. That type of scenario is an entire literary trope, okay? A:TLA did not invent it! Shakespeare literally did it in Romeo and Juliet when he had Peter argue with musicians about something stupid after Juliet’s “death.” The whole point is to break tension before more serious scenes. In R&J, it is before the lovers kill themselves, and in A:TLA, it is before Katara leaves with Zuko to confront Yon Rha. That’s why there’s another moment just like it at the end of that scene! Y’know, Sokka asking to borrow Momo for no reason? It breaks tension! It’s a moment of respite before weighty scenes! It’s incredibly common in every form of media! This is what no Humanities classes did to some of y’all, I swear to God. So yeah, Aang was not disrespecting Katara’s feelings with this. It’s just a tension-breaker. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news for those who devoutly believed it was a sign of Aang being a Horrible Person. You were wrong, ain’t no big thing, go drink some water and stay hydrated okay darlings?
2) “I don’t think so. I think it’s about getting revenge.”
Um, a major point of “The Southern Raiders” is that Aang was right about Katara’s initial drive to face Yon Rha? It was a quest for revenge? Katara literally bloodbends, an ability she was forced to learn and essentially feels cursed to bear? Also, nowhere here does Aang tell Katara she was a horrible person for feeling angry and wanting revenge. He simply brings her attention to the reality that what she’s currently seeking is revenge. He’s worried about her. She’s his best friend! He loves her! He doesn’t want her to kill Yon Rha because he knows that for Katara to have blood on her hands from a revenge quest would hurt her tremendously. (As a matter of fact, the audience knows - or should know - this, too.) So, sorry that Aang expresses concern for her? Apparently not wanting your best friend to murder someone is forcing your beliefs onto them? Damn. Y’all are harsh these days.
3) “The monks used to say that revenge is like a two-headed rat viper. While you watch your enemy go down, you’re being poisoned yourself.” // “Katara, you do have a choice: forgiveness.” // “No, it’s not. It's easy to do nothing, but it’s hard to forgive.” // “But when you do, please don’t choose revenge. Let your anger out, and then let it go. Forgive him.”
I put all the forgiveness quotes together since people tend to complain about them as a whole. But like,, I really don’t see how this is Aang forcing his beliefs onto her? He asks her to choose forgiveness. And just speaking plainly: on an emotional level, it is better for someone to forgive than to murder. Killing someone is not easy, even if you hate that person with every bone in your body, and it will mentally scar whomever does it. Y’all know this! It’s obvious! I shouldn’t have to say it! But Aang knows this, too, and thus he doesn’t want to see Katara kill Yon Rha and perhaps kill a part of herself in the process. Katara is not a killer. I’m not arguing about whether she could have or even if she wanted to, because you know what, she admits she was tempted, but Katara is not a killer. An FMA quote is very fitting here:
“Your hands weren’t meant to kill. They were meant to give life.”
Why should Katara have to live with a man’s murder on her conscience, especially when his death would be a result of fruitless revenge? The answer is simple: she shouldn’t, and Aang doesn’t want her to. Katara is a warrior. A healer. A leader. A friend. But not a killer.
Anyways. Back to my point: Aang is not forcing his beliefs onto her here. He’s offering her another option, the option she ends up choosing, albeit she extends forgiveness to Zuko instead. And Prince Holier-Than-Thou (jk love you Zuzu) acknowledges it himself: “You [Aang] were right about what Katara needed.” Aang didn’t force anything on Katara here. He reminded her of her choices, he reminded her about the consequences of revenge, and he reminded her about the value of forgiveness. Never once did he tell her she had to forgive Yon Rha or else. And when it came down to it, he stepped aside, and he let her go, because he knew this was a journey she needed to take. So… He actually did the exact opposite of forcing his beliefs onto her! He respected her feelings and let her make her own decision! Seriously, how many pairs of anti-Aang goggles do people have to wear to genuinely believe otherwise??
“it didn't seem like he knew her”
Ohhhhhh my God this is SO close to one of the actual points of the episode! So close!! It’s not that Aang didn’t know her; it’s that Katara wasn’t acting like herself. I’ve talked about it before here and here, but Katara was incredibly consumed by her emotions in “The Southern Raiders.” It’s why she ignores Zuko the entire time before they leave on Appa! It’s why she makes that callous comment to Sokka about their mother that we know she never would have made normally! She is drowning in grief about her mother’s absence, guilt regarding her mother’s death, and anger about Zuko (she still does not trust him, and yet he can lead her to her mother’s killer; I don’t know about y’all, but that is really freaking difficult to reconcile). So when Aang compares her to Jet, it’s not a far-off description. She is acting like Jet, because she’s consumed by grief and hurt and anger and she’s not acting like herself. It is instrumental, too, that Katara isn’t acting like herself, because it makes her decision not to pursue revenge and instead offer a second third chance to Zuko even more profound. “I’m proud of you,” Aang tells her, and damn! The audience is, too! I was incredibly proud of her for finding her way out of what can be a bottomless spiral for some people. So again, it wasn’t that Aang didn’t know her. It was that Katara wasn’t acting like herself (I guess meaning… no one knew her?).
In conclusion, literally all of these anti-Aang arguments regarding TSR are exhausting and so easily disprovable. The fact that they somehow manage to live on is evidence that people just want excuses to hate Aang, plain and simple. Like, it’s so easy to just say you don’t vibe with his character? You don’t have to pull BS excuses to “justify” it? I don’t vibe with Ty Lee as much as I do other characters (although I have recently grown much more fond of her; bless the Renaissance for more Mailee content, even if some of it is just a Zukka byproduct), but y’all don’t see me twisting her sacrifice in “Boiling Rock” to make it seem like it was selfish or something (mostly because, spoiler alert, it wasn’t). Like, you can say Aang isn’t your favorite and move on instead of using the same boring rhetoric over and over and over that just makes it look like you lack critical thinking. :/
TL;DR - Aang’s comments to Katara in “The Southern Raiders” came from a place of concern. A place of wisdom. A place of love. And honestly? I think Katara realizes this, and she’s grateful to him all the more for it.

Zutara Week 2021: Day 6 Spirit
Lets get to it! Day 6 of Zutara week: Spirit!
As always, you can read my completed works from this week here at FF.Net
Happy reading!!
----
“The Blue Spirit? Who the hell is that?” Sokka says as they pass the 10th wanted sign with a painted photo of an angry looking mask.
Katara stops to look at the photo, reading the description in detail. “’Wanted for crimes against the Fire Nation, theft, and arson’.”
“Sounds like our kinda guy, what does he look like?” Toph asks. They were heading back to the upper ring of Ba Sing Se after searching all day for Appa.
“It’s just a blue spirit mask.” Aang explains.
“Oh blue, my favorite color!” Toph sarcastically replies.
Katara rolls her eyes, “Haha, very funny, Toph.”
“Thank you, I’m here all week!”
A few hours later as Katara is making dinner, she realizes she’s out of cabbage for her stew. If she weren’t so caught up looking for Appa, she would have remembered to buy cabbage from the cabbage guy that was robbed yesterday.
As she walks down the street she starts to get a bad feeling, like something was following her. The sun was almost completely gone from the sky and the moon was nothing more than a small sliver tonight. The usually busy streets silent as the curfew of Ba Sing Se is almost near.
Clutching her bag closer to her chest, Katara moves more quickly down the streets, hoping to make it back to the other’s before nightfall.
But that wasn’t the case.
“Hello, sweetheart. What’s the rush?” Two figures emerge from behind a building stepping into her path to the upper ring. They were both middle aged men, wearing what seemed to be rugged old clothes, warn and torn from old age. One of the men had a thick black beard and short black hair. While the other was bald and missing a few teeth.
The man with the dark bears steps towards her as she takes a step back, “Awe, we’ll be nice with you. Won’t we Toshi.”
“Yeah, real nice.” He gives her a sinister smile before diving for her. But that was their first mistake. Uncorking her waterskin, Katara forms a water whip swatting back at her two attackers, pushing them away so she could run in the direction towards her home.
She makes it about a yard away before a wall of rock breaks out in front of her, thwarting her path to freedom.
“Uh-uh.” Her attacker says. “No escaping tonight, young lady. Who knew there was a Waterbender among us.”
“I bet she’s worth a lot in the trade, boss.”
“Oh she will be.” The words sent a chill up her spine.
They want to sell me?!
“I don’t think so!” A deep voice rings out from above. A dark figure cloaked in black jumps from the roof swinging two twin Dao swords ready to fight.
Katara’s eye widen in shock.
“You’re the Blue Spirit!” The bald man yells.
His partner crouches down in a wide spread motion before a boulder rushes towards the Blue Spirit.
“No!” Katara yells, warning the Spirit of the on coming attack, but he’s much quicker than she expected. He jumps over the rock with ease and uses it to flip and land in front of the two men.
With quick precision, the Blue Spirit fights against the two Earthbenders. Keeping up with each of their attacks. Katara knows she could help, but she’s rooted to the ground watching the fight unfold before her.
It doesn’t take long for the two Earthbenders to grow tired against the quick attacks of the Blue Spirit. Eventually the Blue Spirit has them cornered and the two Earthbenders are begging for mercy. With a quick motion of his swords, the Blue Spirit pushes the men back and they find themselves running off in the opposite direction from where they once came.
“That was amazing!” Katara runs up to the Spirit, forgetting he was a wanted criminal. “How can I ever thank you?”
The Spirit turns to her, finally seeing the person he had saved.
It’s the Avatar’s Waterbender…if I follow her maybe I can-
No.
Zuko’s thoughts come to a halt. He can’t jeopardize his and Uncle Iroh’s new lives over his selfish need to restore his honor. If anything, it’d be the dishonorable thing to do.
But I could go home.
The Blue Spirit shakes his head and turns away from Katara, ready to leave her and head back to the Jasmine Dragon. But before he could run down the closest alleyway, a soft hand grasps at his arm.
“I really would like to thank you for saving me back there.” Her eyes full of gratitude. Zuko felt his heart jump into his throat. He knew the Avatar’s Waterbender was attractive, but he never had a chance to really look at her before, and under the moonlight she was absolutely glowing.
Wow.
He finds himself leaning towards her, completely forgetting he’s wearing the Blue Spirit mask. When he’s inches way, she places her hands on the mask and pulls on it slighting, freeing the bottom portion of Zuko’s face. She leans up to meet him, placing a short chaste kiss on his lips before pulling away.
She smiles to herself, a soft blush settling across her cheeks. “Thank you.”
Before Zuko could move to catch her, bring her back into his arms, she’s off running back to her friends, away from him.
He feels the urge to follow her, not to find the Avatar, but for her.
Maybe one day…

What Subjects I Think LOK Characters Would Teach:
Lin: PE, obviously. Dating Kya and all the kids are happy cause there’s a noticeable shift in Lin’s mood once they start dating. She no longer forces kids to run a mile every day and instead does it once a week now, so the kids are hoping her and Kya stay together. She also coaches Golf and Lacrosse.
Kya: Waffled between MILF Math teacher, MILF Science teacher, and hippy/chill Music teacher, but decided on MILF Science Teacher. Getting strong Biology vibes. Very fun labs and not strict at all. Her and Zhu-Li are super passionate about leading the Science Bowl team. Seeing these young people be so passionate about STEM and helping their fellow teammates makes her hopeful for this young generation.
Tenzin: He kinda gives math teacher vibes, but a large part of his character in the show is about him keeping his history alive, and teaching others abut learning and respecting history, so I feel like he’s a History teacher. His class is a lot of notetaking but he plays quiet music and does a five minute meditation in the middle of class to encourage kids to relax, so students really like him and actually listen to him. Also, he’s kind of gullible so they make up fake trends to tell him. He once spent a week addressing people as “brony” cause students told him thats what people say now instead of bro. Kids got a good laugh out of that one. Him and Pema are another favorite teacher couple.
Bumi II: Def gives off eccentric/unhinged English teacher vibes. Very interesting and informative conversations in his class, but things get off topic very quickly. Whenever kids ask about Bum-Ju, he gets distracted and will talk the entire rest of the period about what to dress Bum-Ju up as for Halloween. Probably plays a lot of videos. And students don’t worry about if they read the books Bumi II assigns cause they don’t think he’s even read the books he assigns. When having discussions about the books in class, sometimes kids will make up stuff and say it’s in the book and for the most part, Bumi II goes along with it cause he doesn’t know what actually happens in the books.
Varrick: Also gives off eccentric/unhinged English teacher vibes, but because he’s a businessman/war profiteer, I’m gonna have to say he teaches Econ and gives students lots of unsolicited financial advice. Also supervises the Engineering and Robotics Club.
Zhu-Li: Science teacher, probably Chemistry. She’s very good at explaining and getting kids to follow her instructions. Not only is she a co-supervisor for the Science Bowl team, she helps Varrick run Engineering and Robotics Club, cause if it were only Varrick running it, no kids would come. His intensity and eccentricity scares them.
Iroh II: He’s definitely the young Math teacher everyone has a crush on. Very chill and doesn’t give a lot of homework. Kids love when he shows pictures of his dog to the class and eventually he brings in the dog cause admin think the dog is too cute to say no to.
Tonraq: Resident DILF History teacher. Kind of a hardass but also a nice dude so most everyone passes his class. Probably that History teacher that is also a football coach, so during fall he doesn’t give a FUCK about whether anyone actually turns anything in. Him and Senna is the teacher couple that seems like opposites but actually are pretty similar and balance each other out.
Senna: That English teacher that every mentally ill student becomes emotionally attached to. You know what I’m talking about. She’s so sweet, funny, and chill so all the kids love her class. Tries to include memes in her presentations to seem “with it” but they’re like, doge memes from 2014. But the kids appreciate the effort.
Pema: Definitely the sweet English teacher that occasionally has a mental breakdown when the students test her patience. Otherwise very chill. Also teaches the Childhood Education and Development class. Her, Senna, and Bumi II run the school newspaper.
Bataar: Drafting. Pretty chill, very skilled, and def smokes on the weekend. Also, him and Suyin are that teacher couple that everyone likes.
Suyin: Dance. Super nice and always has like to of those smelly plug in things going so her room smells good and has a “good vibe that evokes emotion”. Always plays EDM or weird 80s rock to get the kids moving. She runs the school dance team. When Bataar has prep period, he sometimes drops in to see Su dance, cause she’s mesmerizing to watch. All the kids think that, coupled with the fact that they eat lunch together every day, makes them the cutest couple ever.
Amon: Drama. He loves directing kids on how to totally live a role. If you can imagine, he sometimes gets a little overdramatic about drama, forgetting that these are just highschool kids, not Oscar winners, but his passion makes the class more enjoyable. Runs Drama Club with Tarrlok.
Tarrlok: Probably Physics. A difficult class, but he’s pretty good at explaining so most kids don’t struggle too much. His main focus is running student government, which he takes pretty seriously. Sometimes too seriously.
Unalaq: Teaches Psychology. The most pretentious teacher on campus. It’s literally so bad, that even other teachers avoid him. Amon abandoned his coffee still being brewed in the machine in the staff room cause Unalaq walked in and he didn’t want to be in a room with Unalaq again after he said that Amon’s outfit “looked like something stolen from the lost and found of a funeral home”. Unalaq sees it as “telling it like it is”.
Zaheer: Government and Politics. Tries to teach the class very well but also injects his own opinion into teaching a lot. The students find him scary but some also kinda think he’s hot. Also does Yearbook. Him and Senna run Mock Trial. Replaced the old Government and Politics teacher Hou-Ting after she retired. She was that one old teacher that made it a hobby to harrass students and constantly reminisced about when you could smack students.
P’Li: Math teacher. Much scarier than Zaheer. Plays her trash ass music very loudly while the kids work. Def yells at kids. She’s kind of funny when she’s in a good mood tho, and when she roasts kids it’s really funny cause it’s usually dead on. Her and Zaheer are those teachers that flirt a lot and you know they’re sleeping together.
Ming-Hua: Art. Loves drawing and, you guessed it, watercolor painting. Very chill and plays soft music but lets you listen to your own music. Super sarcastic and all the students eat it up. Literally a universal favorite. She runs Art Club and Fashion Club.
Ghazan: Guitar. Pretty cool teacher that definitely has some weird stories. All the students know he has a crush on Ming-Hua cause they flirt constantly, but he denies it. Runs E-Sports Club. Idk why I think that, it just feels right. Him and Ming-Hua are also the kinds of teachers kids become emotionally attached to.
Kuvira: Government and Politics also. Seems calm and reasonable, but is a total ass. Makes kids give up their phones, allows almost no talking, gives out more detentions a week than most teachers do in one year, and doesn’t allow for much discussion. Everyone wants her class cause she’s hot but most drop within the first week, to the point that counselors have to say no to some kids so they don’t have to get rid of the class altogether.
Bataar Jr.: Computer Lit teacher. None of the students respect him so they’ll play Minecraft the whole time or play inappropriate videos really loud. Doesn’t really put much effort into teaching, which for some kids is a dream, but for others is an annoyance. Him and Kuvira are the teacher couple that makes everyone say “wtf”. Literally no one knows why they’re together.
Izumi: Secretary/Attendance. Pretty much remembers everything and is super organized. She is the glue that holds the school together. Most students don’t know her name though cause she’s super quiet and works mostly behind the scenes. Whenever Zuko sends anyone her way though he reminds them of her name and to say thank you cause he recognizes how hard his daughter works to keep everything running smoothly. Izumi catches on to this and always manages to thank her dad with a nice tea and a hug.
Toph: Vice Principal. Scary as fuck. Doesn’t ever call kids’ parents cause she efficiently scares the shit out of every kid, so they never do whatever bad thing they were doing again. When she has to work dances, Katara always tries to get her to dance with her. She resists every time, but she always gives eventually. She’s happy to though, cause although she’ll never say it out loud, seeing Katara this happy at her old age warms her heart.
Katara: Health Clerk. Very sweet and everybody loves her. Sometimes kids pretend to feel sick just to talk to her. She doesn’t mind though cause a kid that has a tummy ache and a kid that needs to talk are both kids that need help, and she’s happy to offer whatever support she can. She also always offers to supervise dances when the school has them and always manages to bust a move.
Zuko: Counselor. Wants to be to students what his uncle was to him. Aang and Sokka were counselors too, some years ago. And while they could give some good nuggets of advice and offered the kids amazing support, they also would totally fuck up student’s schedules by accident cause those numbskulls were exactly that- numbskulls. So usually Zuko would have to fix that. He misses fixing their messes and, more importantly, he misses them (they aren’t dead, just retired). He hopes to retire soon too, cause he’s getting too old for this, but he secretly doesn’t want to retire just yet cause working at school allows him to see and spend time with Izumi. Since they’re both working, it’s not like they have too much time together, but even just her popping into his office to bring him tea or check in on how he’s doing that day brings a smile to his face that doesn’t leave for the rest of the day.
Raiko: Principal. After Toph stepped down cause she’s “too old for this shit” (her words), Raiko stepped in. The students aren’t a fan of him but he’s not terrible. And since Toph is still Vice Principal, she keeps him in check.

shhh i’m not on my phone at work got a second wHAT
35:) ramble to me, babe
35. ramble about any fic-related thing you want
corey this is so vague i don't even know where to begin skjgdfhdj uhhhhh what do i want to ramble about,,
WAIT OKAY I GOT IT
okay so back in like. february i think i did another ask game like this and someone (jo?? maybe???) sent an ask about meta/foreshadowing/hidden references for this ultraviolet morning light and at the time, only the first two(?) chapters were out so i couldn't talk about the foreshadowing, bc it was all leading up to the end of chapter six. but i can talk about it now bc the whole fic is up!!
i'll put it under the cut bc i know it'll be long + spoilers for those who haven't yet read tuvml
fic writer ask game
okay so first. all of the foreshadowing for the drowning scene. maybe i did already have a list of these in my google docs in case anyone every asked, maybe not, i won't say
anyway. i added in water/drowning imagery with zuko specifically in this fic, because of the drowning scene, and especially bc in the atla world, water imagery would generally be used with characters from the water tribes rather than someone from the fire nation. so it wasn't just me liking water-related words and shoving them onto zuko for no reason; it was intentional
chapter one:
- He really can’t think of anything more beautiful than Zuko drenched in moonlight - This is what fire feels like when doused with water. - It burns like fire consuming Sokka’s entire body, like he’s been dunked underwater and the surface has frozen over and his lungs are about to give out, but he’s going to keep hitting the ice anyways like he’s strong enough to break it.
chapter two:
- It washes over his body all at once, like a wave pulling him under the surface of the ocean, until his limbs are numb and tingly and his head sways. He’s completely frozen in place, eyes staring straight ahead but not really seeing anything. - He would’ve rather stood across from Azula in the Agni Kai arena and let her shoot him full of lightning, rather been dropped in the middle of the ocean
chapter three:
- Zuko searches the tumultuous ocean that is his mind for the right words - Zuko was telling them about Azula never quite getting the knack for swimming despite their annual vacations to Ember Island when they were little, and Sokka was so happy.
chapter four:
So he lets the words sink, lets them drown in the knowledge that he no longer has the right to talk to Sokka in the same way he used to.
chapter five:
The moonlight pours over him, drowning him in a soft white glow.
chapter six:
But…my doctors have told me that spending the rest of your life letting yourself drown in guilt isn’t going to help anyone.
also, people picked up on vai being a double agent, but no one picked up on the fact that she was a waterbender, even though i did hint at that too:
- Her brown skin is almost as dark as Sokka’s and her face and arms are covered in freckles. - It reminds Sokka of himself a little; the bright blue eyes of a waterbender but no bending ability to speak of. - How can you get better than a play with dragons, a star-crossed love affair, sun and moon symbolism, and a villain who has a secret past that ties them to the protagonist?
beyond that, there are also a lot of parallels/call backs to previous chapters/foreshadowing to future scenes just in general. the funniest one (and also completely unintentional one) is probably sokka and katara calling each other their least favorite [sibling]
“You’re my least favorite sister,” // You are, and I say this from the bottom of my heart, my least favorite brother ever. chapter 1 // epilogue
but there are. several more. and i'm not sure how many of them people picked up on so i will add them all bc i love them <3
Zuko would get himself arrested, kidnapped, killed, whatever if it would keep Sokka safe. // “I would give my life for [Zuko] without a second thought.” … “But would he do the same for you?” chapter 4 // chapter 6
When Sokka’s hand began to retreat, Zuko had reached forward, grabbed it, and whispered, “Please stay.” // “Don’t leave me.” Sokka says it like a prayer … like he would repeat it until he couldn’t remember anything else if it meant Zuko would keep holding him. “Just… stay.” chapter 5 // chapter 7
So they sit - Sokka and Zuko - on the roof of some abandoned building in the outskirts of the city. // “But now I’m pretty sure we’re just destined to be Sokka and Zuko” chapter 5 // chapter 7
“I just don’t think he’s trustworthy enough for this. … when he proves that he isn’t as reliable as you think - when he proves that he’s only ever going to let you down - I’m going to say I told you so.” // “Zuko is kind, and he is trustworthy and reliable. He’d never purposefully let me down” chapter 3 // chapter 6
this ^ was one i was hoping people would pick up on bc it makes the drowning scene/sokka pleading for vai to not hurt zuko that much angstier, but i'm not sure anyone did so now i'm putting those lines right next to each other so you're all forced to confront the pain <3
Is he still in love with Zuko? Is being in love enough? // But what good is any of that? Love isn’t always enough. // “It doesn’t matter who or where feels like home, it doesn’t matter if we’re in love. When you’re next in line for the throne, love isn’t enough.” chapter 3 // chapter 4 // chapter 6
Zuko warms his other hand on instinct, and apparently it was a good call because Sokka squeezes it tighter and presses closer to Zuko. “I forgot my mittens at home,” // I love you doesn’t always take the shape of those three words. … Sometimes, it’s Have you eaten today? or Don’t forget your mittens again! chapter 1 // chapter 6
this ^ is also one i thought people might pick up on but idk if anyone did or not. but it made me🥺🥺 when i wrote it
[religion tw for the last part]
okay i could leave it there but corey gave me an excuse to ramble and i've made the post this long anyways so one more thing! i explained this to corey a while ago when we were having dinner together but i find it very funny so i'm sharing it with all of you i say like anyone has actually read this far
i accidentally made zuko a Christ Figure in tuvml
"but grace, surely that's not possible," you say. "surely there's no way zuko is a christ figure! there aren't any christian themes in tuvml. you didn't even have anyone try to convince vai to forgive zuko or have anyone convince zuko and sokka that they should forgive vai! how could you have a christ figure in your fic???"
let me set the scene. it's 2019, you're a senior in high school, and you decided to take ap literature for the possibility of college credit. your teacher has this book called how to read literature like a professor that he has his classes read chapters from, and one of those chapters talks about Christ Figures in literature. one of those chapters also talks about baptism symbolism, and mentions how oftentimes, characters who are christ figures will go through a baptism of some sort - being "born again" after a scene where they come out of the water
do you want to know what zuko does in this ultraviolet morning light?
he goes into the water. and then he comes back out.
and do you want to know what i had sokka say about zuko shortly before he took a dive into the baptistry water?
Zuko looks away from him, resigned, like he’s ready to die as atonement.
see. i grew up Christian, i went to church every sunday and i have spent the majority of my life memorizing Bible verses either for awana or bible quizzing and. sometimes i just drop biblical words into my writing sometimes bc they're words i've heard since i was a kid, and they're words i learned make you sound smarter at church. so of course i throw them around while writing. i use them in essays, i use them in poetry, and i use them in fan fiction.
so was i trying to make zuko a christ figure in my fic? absolutely not.
but i had sokka say he looked ready to die as atonement (for the sins of his people), and then i had him go into the water, nearly die, and have to be "brought back to life" by suki's cpr, being "born again" after a "baptism" and
well
accidental christ figure zuko i guess
anyway. this went on for a while and i'm not sure anyone bothered reading all of it which. valid.
thank you corey for letting me ramble skjdgfdjgh i'm not sure this is coherent, nor should it have all been in one post, but whatever

ATLA Ships
Because there’s an endless deluge of ship hate going on, I wanted to break up the BS with some lighthearted fun. You know, what fandom is SUPPOSED to be.
So here is my honest, positive take on most ATLA ships:
Aang
x Katara: High school sweethearts, they are each other’s biggest cheerleader, have not called each other by their actual first name since week 2 of dating and now they’ve been married for five years, still thinks they can give dating advice to their friends.
x Sokka: Idiots in love, half of the people they know think they’re just super close, the other half think they’re dating but won’t ask in case they’re somehow wrong, got married for the tax benefits and never got divorced, both still routinely commit tax fraud
x Toph: Sometimes their teasing of each other gets so intense it’s like foreplay, Aang is still shocked someone calls him out because he is obviously a pure cinnamon roll who never does anything wrong????, Toph is still confused that Aang can compliment her and he’s not lying?????, basically summed up by no one can call my bae an idiot except ME
x Suki: late game relationship, neither were looking for a relationship but they ended up working long hours together on a mission kinda thing, Suki keeps him grounded and brings the common sense of a BAMF non-Bender woman, while Aang gets to be the introduction into all the cool crap he knows about the world, tons of fluff, very calm pair
x Zuko: Started with a “hey you know it’d be funny if the Avatar and the Fire Lord kissed” joke, Zuko immediately overthinks and Aang is clueless, miscommunication ABOUNDS, when they ultimately get together Zuko gets the confidence boost of being with the Avatar, no one can say anything because suddenly the Avatar is there wondering why his boyfriend is pissed off.
x Azula: Everyone worries about toxic co-dependency at first because Aang was the healer in the relationship, he just ends up learning the most about her and falls in love with her, he becomes the first person she trusts, Azula actually pushes him away because she doesn’t want to use him, they end up together after Azula goes on an apology tour, Aang waits for her patiently, full of YEARNING
x Ty Lee: this ship embodies the energy of that meme where the girl is smiling with the burning house in the background, no one knows exactly what’s going on but something ends up on fire, they are not allowed entry into fifteen Earth Kingdom cities, Ty Lee proposes and they are engaged for a good amount of time, but end up eloping at the Earth Kingdom equivalent of Las Vegas, they throw the best parties, the couple who never have children but are the wealthy cool aunt and uncle that stir up the holidays
x Mai: EVERYONE HAS QUESTIONS, started off with a bet that Aang couldn’t make her laugh, they ended up in bed together, definitely a secret relationship, full of “we shouldn’t be doing this” kinda messages, both think it’s just the one time, end up together because they bond over the weirdest esoteric novel series, neither of their personalities change over the years, the type of couple that can go to separate events because they trust each other
x Jet: bonded over the mutual ex girlfriend, Aang gets sick of the fame when he’s older and runs around Kyoshi style with Jet’s crowd, bad choices and bad boys make their pulse race, probably not gonna end up together and it’s about how much gets damaged before they break up.
x Yue: Aang was instantly intimidated, she is just so pretty??? and proper???, despite being the Avatar Aang doesn’t think he’s good enough, Yue really likes how funny he is, they bond over spirit stuff, something like her royal duty or whatever makes him think he doesn’t have a chance, he finds out she gets engaged because she thinks he doesn’t like her, they’d have like a Jane Austen kinda story imo
I’ll have to write the others later. I won’t be tagging the ships because I don’t wanna clog up the content.
Edited to add Yue. How could I forget my lunar princess????

Bricks. You felt as though you were just hit with a tonne of bricks. The idea of even opening your eyes to the harsh sunlight, which you could feel through your eyelids felt like the worst idea in the world. Your dry throat didn’t help at all either. Maybe if I just lay wherever the fuck I am, I’ll magically gain the energy to move again. Or better yet, maybe the ground will swallow me whole, and I can forget about this mission altogether.
Abruptly interrupting your painful stillness on the ground, there was a small kick into your left side. The sudden shock immediately sent your brain swirling into all the ways you could eliminate whoever disturbed your peace.
“Hey… I think she’s dead.”
Ah, the wonderful sound of an annoying, teenage boy. They’ll be easy to take out.
A second female voice emerged. “She's not dead Sokka! She's literally breathing!" Sokka? As in Hakodas son? Oh Spirits, you never fail to amaze me with how you choose to dictate my life. Hmmm, then that means the girl is Katara. Yay.
"Yeah?! Then why the hell hasn't she even moved a single inch since we found her!"
"Well, maybe she's protesting against your annoying poking!" Spirits they're annoying and loud.
A third voice attempted to intervene, "Guys…. Stop, she's fine. Trust me." Hmm, that's considerably younger. 10 years old perhaps? Or a bit older? 12 maybe? Male?
"Oh yeah? How can you be so sure Aang."
"Well Katara is right, she is breathing for one. But…. There's something else about her, I can feel it."
"What? Like an avatar thingy?"
"Yeah."
Wait the Avatar? Wasn't he on that dragon from when I was-
"Hmmm right, well what are we going to do with her?" At that statement, the annoying boy who seemed to be so confident that you were dead, kicked you again. Sick of his irritable presence, with as much strength you could muster, you took your right hand quickly snatching his ankle, and yanking it towards you, causing him to lose balance and ultimately backwards. Letting out a high-pitched yelp as he thudded onto the hard ground, you quickly rose to your knees. Taking the hand gripped around his ankle to tug him closer to you, you moved between his legs until you were able to straddle his waist, placing all of your weight on top of him. Finally, you grabbed both his arms, holding them above his head, completely hindering him from moving.
"If you kick me one more time, or even trying anything like that again, I WILL chop your legs off. Got it?"
Staring at you with pure horror in his eyes, he visibly gulped, nodding. "Yes! Yes! Hear it loud and clear. Totally got it! Just call me Sokka, the guy with perfect understanding."
Moving your right hand from his wrists, you firmly gripped his jaw, forcing him to keep eye contact with you. Taking in his scared features, you smirked even though he couldn't see it. "You sure about that, water boy?"
"YES! YES!", frantically nodding, you could tell that if you kept pressing on, he'd probably burst into tears soon. Bringing his voice down to a pathetic whimper, he let out, "please don't hurt me."
Finally lifting yourself off him, you let out a dry laugh, satisfied with his compliance. "Uh-huh. Right."
Turning your head to the people that belonged to the other two voices, you took in their stunned and weakly defensive stances. Chest heaving at your sudden physical movements, you nodded, acknowledging them. "Hey, Avatar. Katara. So, where am I?"
After a few moments of silence, the Avatar spoke up first. “You’re just outside of Omashu.”
Katara elbowed Aang, instantly alarmed at his calm nature towards you. “Aang! You can’t just say that. We don’t know who this person is or how she even knows my name! She could be with the Fire Nation for all we know!”
“Katara it’s alright! Calm down.”
“Calm down?! She just attacked Sokka! I mean, rightfully so- but it’s a little suspicious. We don’t know who she is or her intentions.”
Sighing, you looked around, taking in your surroundings. It seemed that rocky mountains surrounded you with a small group of tents in the distance. Interesting… why are they all Earth Kingdom people, when Omashu is so close by?
Shifting your attention back towards the three, you decided against telling them who you were. “It doesn’t matter how I know any of your names. What matters is that I need to get back to my original mission.”
Sokka scoffed, moving to stand beside his sister. “Your mission? Let me guess; you’re here to kill Aang too.”
Raising an eyebrow, his eyes immediately widened in fear. “Trust me, water boy, if I wanted him dead, we wouldn’t be having this conversation right now. I’m here on… other confidential business.” Met with silence from all three of them you moved on, “so let me guess, you found Omashu invaded by the Fire Nation, and you three were the ones that helped that tiny camp of people over there escape from their rule. Interesting choice considering there are bigger things you should be worrying about. Yet, why are all of you still here? Surely the Avatar and his friends don’t need to train them in how to look after themselves.”
“We’re going back into Omashu. To make a trade for King Bumi and to give the governor his son back.” Why does he keep willingly give me information? Now that’s interesting. I can barely feel any fire within him either, it’s almost as if it's not there at all…
“Okay. I’ll accompany you all into Omashu, and once we arrive within the city, we’ll go our separate ways.”
“Sure!”
“NO!”
“NO!”
Bursting out into a fit of laughter, you shook your head at the water tribe siblings. “Naw, it’s sweet how you think you all have a choice in this. Don’t worry, nothing will happen to any of you, I’m just hitching a ride and you’ll never have to see me again. Regardless, Aang said yes, and considering he’s the Avatar and all, I think his choice overrules yours.”
Katara didn’t seem to like your suggestion that her and Sokka’s opinion didn’t matter. “No, it doesn’t work like that! We’re a family, and we make these decisions together! You can’t just wake up after who knows how long you were laying there for, and expect us to trust you immediately! For one, you attacked Sokka a little too easily without any bending, and you literally said that you were on a mission! If I’m honest, you sound like trouble, especially since we don’t even know your name! Or what you even look like!”
“Just as I said before, it doesn’t matter. It’s sweet you all care enough about each other’s safety, but I’m not here to cause any of you ‘trouble’. Get me inside Omashu, and we’ll never have to speak or interact ever again. If it means so much to you, I’ll let water boy tie me up, and watch me the entire journey there as reparations for my small attack against him. How does that sound?”
Aang more than satisfied with your offer let out a quick, “Yes!”.
Grumbling under her breath Katara shook her head, clearly understanding that this was as good as it was going it get. “Fine. But he ties you up now. If I see you even move an inch out of line, don’t think I’ll go easy on you. I am a waterbender after all.”
As if you being a waterbender would have stopped me. Holding your arms out and casting your attention towards the ground, you were ready for Sokka to bind your wrists together with some cloth, he tore off his clothing. Unknown to you, he seemed to notice that despite how tough you were, you were weak. All of the sudden movements and the argument with his sister clearly drained you physically.
“Hey… I don’t really like you since you threatened to kill me, but are you sure you’re ready to be travelling so soon? You’re breathing really heavily. You need some water and food.” Gently wrapping your wrists together, he tried and failed to make eye contact with you.
At the mention of water, you throat physically constricted in pain. “Nah, I’ll be alright. Just need to get to Omashu.”
“Doubt it. Let’s get you on Appa and I’ll nag Katara for something.”
Silently following him to the Sky Bison, you were grateful that your mask covered the wide smile that broke out onto your face. It’s beautiful.
Tumblr media
Finally, parting ways with them, you let out a breath of relief. That was the most silent journey I have ever been on and I travel by myself… Spirits, I hope I never have to run into them again. I think I’m going to lose my mind if I ever do. What was Hakoda thinking?! I’d be an awful big sister to them, they already hate me! It didn’t help how much they kept bickering either. Argh, what a mess. Aang kept looking at me funny the entire time too! What was up with that? Do his Avatar powers allow him to see into my soul or something? Spirits, he’d probably wants to unleash his Avatar state on me for all of the lives I’ve taken. Yikes.
Before setting off to find Azula, you needed to take precautions to blend into the small kingdom. Stealing some clothes, you found you chose to duplicate you last disguise with the only main difference being that it was in green cloth instead of pink.
After securing your final blade underneath your robes, you knew there was no more time to waste and you needed to find Azula quick. You weren’t sure how much she has progressed in her mission to find Iroh and Zuko and the guilt of not helping them when they ran off the Fire Nation ship was already nagging you like an itch you couldn’t scratch.
This city is too big to wander around aimlessly.
Closing your eyes and letting out a deep breath, you chose to look for her the quickest way you knew how. By sensing her fire.
Come on y/n; you can do it. Unsure of how far your abilities would work, you grew worried that she may be too far away for you to even feel her.
After a few minutes, you started to feel irritated. Of course, you could sense fire, you felt so much of it. The city was crawling with Fire Nation after all, but it wasn’t hers. You emitted a few more deep breaths, trying to clear your head.
Suddenly a deep, familiar voice entered your mind. Inner peace. You need to find your inner peace y/n. That’s why you keep losing control; you need to find it.
Is this that dragon again? As if you didn’t have a random voice inside your head, you were met with silence.
Look you can’t just randomly enter my mind you know, and who in Spirits name transports me to some random mountainside?! I don’t know who you are, but I’ve been doing fine all of these years on my own. So kindly, get out of my head.
Letting out a small scream into your hands as the voice never came back, you closed your eyes again.
Stupid voice.
Stupid inner peace.
Breathing in and out, you wracked your brain for something that made you feel at peace. Come on, you can do it. Then after a few moments, it hit you. Not your inner peace, no. You’d have to find that another day. What did hit you was Azula’s fire, you felt it.
Immediately following the tugging feeling, you ran as fast as you could until you came to a tall piece of scaffolding. Even though you were so far below, you could still hear the fight that was occurring many levels up. Can’t she keep herself out of a battle for at least a day?! I bet it’s not even Zuko up there. Scowling, knowing that you can’t ignore her completely, you climbed up until you reached the fight but still remaining hidden.
By the time you reached the platform, you felt that Azula had already moved from this part of the fight. That didn’t mean that there weren’t pressing matters right in front of you, though.
“How are you going to fight without your bending?” A Fire Nation girl before you brought out her blades ready to attack Katara. Holding back a verbal groan, you knew you were going to have to help her.
Quickly jumping in, you deflect Mai’s knife with your arm while simultaneously catching a boomerang that you spotted in the corner of your eye. As the flying bison approached your quickly dodged its tail as it sent the two fire nation girls flying back. Seeing a distraction between all parties, you threw the boomerang back to Sokka while running for the scaffolding, making your way into the shadows. So much for never having to see them again.
Tumblr media
When you ran away from the scene, you knew your disguise was too recognisable considering the two girls saw you when you intervened. This left you to painstakingly have to find a new set of clothes, just to make babysitting Azula and her friends so much easier. Despite finally being back on track with your mission, it didn’t make it any less tedious as you followed from a distance in the shadows. “So, we’re tracking down your brother and uncle, huh?”
“It’ll be interesting seeing Zuko again, won’t it Mai?” Huh? Is that coal brains girlfriend or something?
Azula spoke up at that comment, “It’s not just Zuko and Iroh anymore. We have a third target now.” You have got to be fucking joking. I guess I better start finding my inner peace after all, you know, so I don’t blow her FUCKING BRAINS OUT!
Tumblr media

To Chip Away
Read on AO3
Summary: Suki's spent a lot of time excelling at acting like she's fine. She's a leader; it comes with the territory, and pretending to be fine after escaping the Boiling Rock is just the next logical step. They've all got bigger problems, anyway. Still, it turns out she's not fooling Sokka quite as well as she'd hoped.
It takes Sokka a while to notice Suki’s gone, which he’d prefer to attribute to her stealth skills rather than his own failings. He’s let his guard down a little at the Air Temple, has stopped mentally doing headcounts every couple minutes, although he maybe should resume those with the way people keep disappearing on them (if he and Zuko had been the last ones missing, surely they could be forgiven, since they’d come back with more people than they’d left with).
Either way, he’s halfway through talking to his dad when he looks around at some point and realizes she’s not with the group. “Did you see Suki leave?”
Hakoda takes a second to catch up with the sudden about-face in the conversation, but then he says, “Don’t think so. She can’t have gone far, though, the flying bison’s still here.”
“He has a name, Dad. Did you forget Appa’s name?”
“There have been quite a few new names to keep track of, and aren’t you trying to find your girlfriend?”
Sokka nods. “I’ll be back, I still wanna hear about Kallik spitting on Fire Nation troops.”
“That’s pretty much the whole story,” Hakoda says, but Sokka’s already up and heading off to find Suki.
His dad had been right, there weren’t a lot of places she could’ve gone without some serious climbing, and only a few were out of view from the space where they’d set up camp. There’s a ledge, though, high enough up the cliffside trail that someone could remain unseen, and that seems like as good a guess as any. He follows the path up, sticking close to the cliff wall and, spirits, he’s not particularly afraid of heights, but he still wishes the Air Nomads had built these paths a little wider. Not that they’d needed them, of course, but it would’ve been nice.
He crests the hill, only a little winded, and finds her there with her back to him, staring off into the distance. She doesn’t seem to hear him at first, so he kicks a pebble against the rock face because startling someone on a mountain ledge doesn’t seem like the world’s best idea.
She turns at the noise, already on high alert, and then she relaxes. “Sokka.”
“Hey.” Sokka comes to sit next to her, swinging his legs over the side of the ledge and ignoring just how nervous that makes him. Like with the paths, there’s fear of heights, and there’s a much more reasonable fear of falling miles to your death, and he’s not really ashamed to say he has a healthy dose of the latter. “Just came to check on you. Are you okay?”
“Yeah. Of course I am.”
“You don’t have to be.”
“I’m fine,” she says, the words a little razor-edged.
But if Sokka doesn’t press, no one else is going to, and it seems like someone needs to. “You were in prison.”
“And now I’m not in prison. So I’m fine.” She’s trying hard enough to be convincing that Sokka almost gives up and believes her, except that he remembers holding her, kneeling on the floor of that cell, her breath catching in her throat and her tears soaking the shoulder of his stolen guard uniform. That, and the fact that she’s out here alone in the first place.
“Alright, fine. I won’t keep bothering you about it, I just… I don’t want you to feel like you have to keep it to yourself, you know?”
“I don’t,” she says, but there’s something in it that tells him to let the quiet stretch out between them, and then she shakes her head a little. “Maybe I do. I don’t want to start breaking down now if I’m not sure I can put myself back together fast enough.”
“You’re not doing it alone.”
“I’m not used to that. Or- I don’t know. It’s different.”
Sokka tips his head and asks, “What do you mean?” and he thinks maybe he knows the particular kind of loneliness she’s talking about, but he can’t be sure.
“I was never alone when I had the rest of the Kyoshi Warriors, but I was their leader, you know? I didn’t want to seem like I wasn’t sure of myself because I wanted them to be able to trust me. And I guess they shouldn’t have, but…”
“They absolutely should trust you, are you kidding me? They couldn’t have a better leader.”
Suki looks away, pulling her knee up to her chest and rubbing at a barely visible smudge of dirt on her shoe. “I couldn’t protect them. Not that they can’t protect themselves, I know they can, but I should’ve- I don’t know, I should’ve fought harder. There had to have been something.”
“I know you, okay? I know you would’ve done everything you could, and they know that too, probably even better than I do.”
“I guess,” she says, but she might as well not have said it at all with how little conviction there is behind it.
“I’m serious, it’s not your fault. Losing to Azula and her friends is pretty much a rite of passage around here. They’re scary.”
“I love the way they fight, actually. It was nice to have it not directed at us for once when we were trying to escape.”
“Yeah, I’d kind of like to learn how to throw knives now, but that’s a whole other thing.”
She’s quiet for a minute, looking at something or nothing off in the distance, and then she says, “Do you know me?”
It’s an unexpected step back in the conversation, one Sokka hadn’t been ready for, and he can’t say it doesn’t sting a little. “What do you mean?”
“I don’t mean that in a bad way, I promise. It’s just that sometimes it feels like I’ve known you forever, but then I total up the days we’ve actually spent together and it’s not very many.”
“Well, yeah, but sometimes you can just… get people.”
“I know.” She shakes her head. “Maybe I’m overthinking it. It was just a weird thing to realize.”
“Well, short time or not, it was enough that you knew I’d find you,” Sokka says, but a half-second later he’s seized by doubt. “Unless… that wasn’t true.”
“I meant that. I wasn’t about to lie to you when you were in the middle of trying to rescue me. It’s just a little more complicated than that.”
He reaches out for her hand, lacing his fingers through hers. “So tell me.”
Suki’s expression goes unreadable for a second, back to staring at the horizon, but then she says, “I believed you’d come for me. I really did. But there were bad days when I thought… I don’t know. I guess I wondered if I’d ever make it outside again, because even if you did try to rescue me, so much could’ve gone wrong. Sometimes I almost hoped you didn’t come because I couldn’t watch you die.”
“I was always gonna find you. No matter how long it took.”
“I know. But some days I hoped you didn’t, because then I could keep believing in something. If you got killed trying to rescue me… that would have been it.”
“That’s…”
“Yeah, it’s dark, I know.”
“No, I mean- well, yeah, it is dark, but I get it.” And he thinks he does. He thinks he’d feel the same way, honestly, if it was Suki or Katara or his dad or anyone else risking their lives to save him. It’s something he’d never voice to the rest of the group, too much to put on the people he tries to protect, but it feels safe in the space between the two of them. “I can’t imagine not having anything to do but sit there and think about that.”
“Can’t say I recommend it,” Suki says, and she’s clearly trying to keep her tone light, but it’s not working all that well. There’s too much strain in her voice for that.
“If you wanna tell somebody about that, I know a guy.”
“Oh yeah?”
“His name is Wang Fire. He’s the personal therapist to the Avatar.”
“I don’t know the backstory there, but I’m gonna guess it’s you in disguise,” Suki says, with just the faintest hint of a smile.
“You… would be absolutely correct. But in my defense, I rock a good fake beard.”
Suki makes a show of studying him. “I think I like you okay without it.”
“Okay, well, I’m a little hurt. But the point is, I’ve got two functioning ears and nowhere else to be.”
Suki turns her eyes to the horizon again instead, swinging her legs so her heels kick back against the stone. “I don’t know what there is to say, honestly. I sat in a cell and I tried not to lose my mind. I tried to keep some structure at first, and I’d do some training or try to plan an escape or whatever, but it wears you down after a while. I’d have entire days of just staring at the ceiling trying to remember how to even feel like myself.”
And yes, okay, logically Sokka knows that he hadn’t known where she was, but that doesn’t mean the guilt of not breaking her out sooner doesn’t make it feel hard to breathe. He wants her to keep talking, though, because hopefully getting it all out will do some good, so he just squeezes her hand and waits for her to continue.
“The other prisoners didn’t mess with me or anything- one of them did tell me they thought it was cool that I was an enemy of the state as a teenager, so that was kind of funny- but we weren’t exactly friends, either. It was just… really lonely. I’ve never spent that much time away from the other Warriors, let alone completely on my own.”
“I really can’t imagine. I’m sorry.”
“It’s not like it’s your fault.”
“If I ever figure out something better to say in a situation like this, I’ll let you know. Probably become world famous for it, honestly. I think there’s a real market.”
“Don’t forget me when you’re a celebrity.”
“I could never.” Sokka hesitates for a second, unwilling to shatter the little bit of lightness in the conversation, but he needs to ask the thing he’s been too afraid of. “Azula said- she said something about you being her favorite prisoner. She made it sound like she’d- I don’t know, hurt you, or at least was out there being horrible to you. Was that true, or was that just to throw me off?” Suki hasn’t mentioned it, sure, but maybe it was the type of thing that was too awful to talk about. That’s what it had been in his nightmares, at the very least.
Suki shakes her head. “She was messing with you. She wasn’t pleasant when I got captured or anything, but I didn’t have information she wanted. Once she figured that out, I wasn’t worth her time, and she definitely wasn’t going all the way out to the Boiling Rock for my sake.”
Suddenly, Sokka can breathe a little easier. “I really hoped, just- it’s Azula. Even Toph doesn’t know when she’s lying.”
Suki frowns. “Is Toph… supposed to know when she’s lying?”
“Oh, right. You weren’t there for that, but yeah. Turns out she can tell when someone’s lying because their heartrate picks up.”
“Didn’t know that was possible, but that’s kind of just an everyday thing at this point.”
Sokka sighs. “Tell me about it.”
They sit in silence for a little while longer, but this time there’s less tension to it, not nearly as much hanging in the balance and waiting to be spoken. Maybe Sokka does feel less like he knows the girl next to him than he used to, but maybe that’s not a bad thing, because if he’s lucky he’ll get to know her. He has to believe they’ll have time, after the war. He has to believe they'll make it until after the war.
“Thanks for coming to find me,” Suki says after a while.
“Feel any better?”
“A little.”
“For what it’s worth, I still think you’re the coolest, bravest, toughest person I know.”
She tips her head onto his shoulder. “You’re sweet.”
“So I’ve been told.”
“Oh yeah? When?”
“Uh. By you, right now.”
“You’re also ridiculous.”
Sokka turns and kisses the top of her head. “I can live with that.”

Falling hard
It had started as a blind date set up by one of their mutual friends, Toph. Right now, they were on their fifth date and Sokka could honestly say that the past month of dating Zuko had been the most amazing month of his life. Zuko was smart and funny in an ‘I’m not trying to be funny’ kind of way. He had been extremely shy at first, which had been adorable and had felt like a bit of a challenge to Sokka. All his friends could tell you Sokka was not one to back down from a challenge. However, the more time he spent with Zuko the less it felt like a challenge he had to win, but more like a need to get to know Zuko better. Adorable, smart, beautiful Zuko.
There had just been one issue, Sokka wasn’t sure Zuko felt the same way. Whenever Sokka got too close, touched him just a little bit too intimate, Zuko would freeze up and pull away. Sokka had started to doubt the connection he felt to Zuko as well as his seduction skills. But sitting here across from Zuko at the dinner table Sokka could care less about the physical aspect of their relationship. Just looking at Zuko shyly ducking his head with a small smile on his face, because of some stupid joke Sokka made was enough for now.
“What is it?” Zuko asked, when he looked up and noticed that Sokka was still looking at him.
“you’re cute,” Sokka shot back with a flirty smile. Once again, Zuko ducked his head and a crimson blush crept on his face.
“So, how has your week been? I haven’t seen or heard much from you the past few days,” Sokka continued once it was clear Zuko wasn’t going to respond to Sokka’s previous comment.
“It was fine, I’ve just been super busy with this new play. I’m sorry.”
“Did you get the part you wanted?” Sokka asked excitedly.
He knew Zuko’s major was a bit of a sore spot with his family. Zuko had told him about it on their 3rd date after a few glasses of wine. It had taken him a while to get through his story and Sokka had had to piece some parts of it together himself. As far as Sokka could tell Zuko’s dad was a hard-ass and had never once encouraged Zuko to do what he had wanted to do. Instead, he had pushed him to become a lawyer like his dad and his big sister and they had treated him like a pariah when he told them that he wanted to study arts. Zuko hadn’t spoken to his family in over 2 years, once he started at uni. The only person from his family Zuko still had contact with was his uncle, Iroh. From what Zuko had told him, Iroh was awesome. Supportive and kind. He had treated Zuko like he was his own son and had been so proud when he decided to major in theater. Iroh was his biggest fan, Zuko had told Sokka proudly.
“I did,” Zuko said. He would probably never admit it, but Sokka could see a proud glint in his eyes.
“That’s amazing! We should celebrate. Uhm champagne? Waiter!” Sokka raised his hand to wave over the waiter, “could we have two glasses of champagne please?”
The waiter nodded and disappeared to get the champagne. Zuko smiled at him again and Sokka felt a little bit weak in his stomach.
“You gotta tell me when it is! I want to come watch.”
Sokka could literally see the emotions cross over Zuko’s face. Shock, disbelief, hope, excitement.
“The play is only in 5 months,” Zuko mumbled and suddenly Sokka realized that maybe he had been too forward, pushed too hard again. He basically just told Zuko he hoped that they would still be seeing each other in months. It was true, Sokka really was hoping that he would still be seeing Zuko. But what if Zuko would pull away again and freeze up. At the moment, it didn’t look like Zuko wanted to pull away, so Sokka decided to take another change.
“Well, I can’t wait to see you in that play. You’ll be amazing, I know it.”
Sokka wanted to reach across the table to take Zuko’s hand, but he was afraid that would be pushing too much too fast. So he didn’t. He kept his hands on his side of the table and forced himself to take a deep breath. In the meantime, the waiter had returned with the champagne.
“Cheers! To you Zuko,” Sokka said while reaching half-way across the table so they could clink their glasses together.
“To us,” Zuko said quietly. He didn’t look at Sokka when he said it, which was a good thing, because Sokka could feel the blood rushing to his cheeks. Ok, so he wasn’t making this all up in his head. That’s good.
“To us,” Sokka repeated. Zuko looked up and gave him another one of his shy smiles and Sokka smiled back enthusiastically.
The rest of the dinner went smoothly. They talked some more about their families, their studies, and the places they would like to travel to the most. For Sokka, these places were mostly cold and snowy, like Greenland and Norway and Alaska. For Zuko it was the complete opposite. He wanted to go to Hawaii and Italy, as long as it was hot. They laughed about this for a while and Sokka made the stupid joke that they would never be able to go on holiday together. He realized his mistake as soon as he said it. Zuko’s face fell and he retreated in on himself. Sokka spent the rest of their dinner trying to get back to the carefree atmosphere they had before he had opened his big stupid mouth and ruined everything.
After dinner, they walked back to campus together. Sokka tried brushing their hands together, so he could gauge Zuko’s reaction. Every single time he would even softly graze Zuko’s hand, Zuko would jump and pull away again. Sokka sighed to himself and looked at Zuko sideways. He was getting so many mixed signals, he really didn’t know what to think anymore.
They had arrived at Zuko’s room. The uncomfortable silence dragged on and Sokka had become too self-aware to even try to go in for a kiss. Zuko awkwardly said goodbye and gave a small wave before he ducked inside. Sokka let out another disappointed sigh and started the journey to his own shared dorm room.
Aang was laying upside down on his couch groaning and looking at his laptop angrily.
“Hey buddy, whatcha doing?” Sokka asked.
“Oh! hi Sokka,” Aang perked up. “I’m just finishing my paper on coral bleaching and how it affects so many aspects of the ecological system and the poor aquatic animals. They deserve better! And hardly anyone cares. How can they not care about the animals!”
“I know buddy,” Sokka patted Aang on his head and sat down on the couch next to him.
“How was you date! Did it go well? Did you finally get to kiss him?” Aang asked excitedly.
Sokka pulled a face and Aang’s face fell a little at that as well.
“He just.. He’s so frustrating. At one point we’re laughing and I swear he is flirting with me, but the moment I get too close or try to touch him, even just to hold his hand, he pulls away! Maybe he just doesn’t feel the same thing I’m feeling. What if he just wants to be friends and I’m just reading the situation completely wrong. What if I’m misinterpreting everything and he just doesn’t have the heart to tell me,” Sokka groaned. “I really don’t know what to do, Aang.”
Sokka dropped his head on the back of the couch, groaned again and covered his head with his hands. He felt like a complete idiot.
“I’m sorry Sokka. I’m sure Zuko has a good reason to act the way he does. Maybe you’re right and he just wants to be friends, but I honestly doubt it from what you’ve told me,” Aang said with wide, honest eyes.
“Don’t you remember what an insecure mess I was when I was dating Katara? I over-analyzed every single thing she said, every small touch and I just didn’t know what to think and what to do. The only way you’ll find out what it is that’s bothering him by talking to him. You’re a very affectionate and touchy person, Sokka, maybe Zuko just isn’t like that. Just talk to him about it!”
“Please, everyone could see how smitten you and Katara were for each other. The only ones who couldn’t see it were you and Katara,” Sokka said incredulously.
Aang smiled softly to himself, remembering that time. Aang and Katara had been together for a long time now and they were so cute together, although Sokka would never admit that out loud. He was really happy that Katara had found such a good guy to take care of her and he hadn’t seen his sister as happy as she was when that goofball was around. Sokka would never admit this either, but he was jealous. He wanted that with someone. No, not someone, he wanted that with Zuko. And that thought was just incredibly terrifying, wasn’t it? He still hardly knew Zuko. Zuko wasn’t someone to get to know easily. You had to prick through all the layers and all the walls Zuko had build over the years, but Sokka found that he wanted nothing more than to break all those walls down and get to know more about the mysterious, shy and incredibly gorgeous boy.
Sokka knew Aang was right and that he wouldn’t get an answer without talking to Zuko, but he couldn’t. You could say that his ego was too big for it, but Sokka didn’t think that was the problem. It’s just that he hadn’t felt this way about anyone. Sokka had had girlfriends before and a fling here and there, but all of his relationships always ended because they realized they would work better as friends. But the thought of him and Zuko just being friends, that just hurts. He couldn’t put himself through that. Not after what happened to his mom. He could never feel as lost and hurt and sad as he did the day his mother died. So maybe it was better this way, to net get closer to Zuko, because it could only hurt more, right?
So, that night while Sokka was laying in bed, overthinking as usual, he decided he would wait for Zuko to contact him. He could do that, he could not text Zuko. He would just have to delete Zuko’s number, probably. Just to be sure.
A week went by and Sokka still hadn’t heard anything from Zuko, which only enhanced Sokka’s suspicions that he had read the situation completely wrong. Sokka tried to move and forget Zuko, but everywhere he looked he saw something that reminded him of Zuko. Sokka had never felt like such a useless and pathetic person in his life. How could he have gotten so attached to someone so fast? This never happened to Sokka. Sokka didn’t get attached easily. Honestly, it had taken months to get used to Aang’s bubbly nature. As well as at least a few weeks to get used to Tophs bluntness. In short, it just took Sokka a while to really get used to someone. Sokka always liked people, he was a social guy, but he just had a hard time really trusting someone. Afraid they would leave or something.
But not with Zuko, Sokka was completely smitten within the first two dates.
It took another week before Sokka came face to face with Zuko once again. He walked into the coffeeshop on campus where Katara worked, together with Aang, when he saw Zuko sitting across from Toph. They appeared to be having an intense conversation and Zuko was gesturing wildly. Before Zuko could drag Aang to Katara at the counter, Aang was already on his way to greet Toph and Zuko.
“Hi guys!” Aang chirped. He sucked up his pride and followed Aang reluctantly to their table.
“Twinkle toes,” Toph greeted Aang. “Oh, and Sokka you’re here too,” Toph said in a tone Sokka couldn’t quite place. Sokka was still amazed Toph was able to tell who was in the room, even after all this time. Zuko froze up the minute he saw Sokka and he didn’t even look at him. Sokka felt anger bubbling up inside of him. If Zuko didn’t want to date him that was fine, but ignoring him and acting like he wasn’t even there? Sokka deserved better than that.
“Hello Zuko, good to see you again,” Sokka said in a tone that was maybe a little bit too harsh, because he saw Zuko flinch.
“Hi,” Zuko said under his breath.
“Whatever,” Sokka mumbled and turned away from Zuko and walked over towards the counter. Aang followed him after a few seconds.
“That was a bit harsh, don’t you think?” Aang asked cautiously.
Sokka didn’t respond. He didn’t want to think about stupid Zuko, with his stupid sexy scar and his stupid smile anymore. He focused on Katara and catching up with her. He ordered some way too sweet drink and tried not to look back towards the boy in the corner. When he finished his drink and couldn’t stop himself from searching Zuko again, he realized they had left. The pit in his stomach only grew bigger after that. He was an idiot.
This went on for days. Sokka feeling bad about himself and missing Zuko, so he locked himself inside his room whenever he could. Gaming with Aang or watching murder mysteries by himself in the dark.
This night wasn’t any different he was rolled up in his blanket staring blankly at the tv, which was playing another murder mystery. It was storming outside. The rain was beating against his window and every now and then the sky was lit up by a bolt of lightning. Suddenly, he heard a soft knock on his door. Thinking it was Aang he didn’t move and told him to come in, only to be met with the sight of a drenched Zuko dripping on his carpet. His hair was laying flat against his face and Sokka couldn’t stop his stupid brain from thinking how cute he looked like that. Sokka shot up from his bed until he was standing right next to it staring at Zuko.
For a few seconds neither of them moved. Both too afraid to be break the tense atmosphere that surrounded them. They just stood there looking at each other. After what seemed like forever Sokka’s stupid mouth betrayed him yet again.
“Zuko? What are you doing here?”
Zuko didn’t respond immediately. He seemed to be gathering his thoughts. He looked at Sokka as if it were the last time he was going to see him. He seemed to take in everything about him. Looking over Sokka’s body to his face, lingering on his lips and the looking up into his ice blue eyes. Zuko’s eyes held his gaze, Sokka couldn’t look away. Zuko’s golden eyes were just too captivating and Sokka thought to himself what a shame it would be if this were the last time he got to look at them.
“I-I.. I’m sorry for barging in here like this. I just, I hate not talking to you, not seeing you. I guess, I j-just wondered what I did wrong. Tell me what I did to screw this up. I know I’m not the most fun guy to hang around, b-but I uh I thought were doing ok. Did I just misread the entire situation? Did I say something or do something to upset you. I-I’m going crazy trying to figure out what I did. I need, I just need you to t-tell me, please,” Zuko pleaded and Sokka could see the desperation in his eyes.
It only took his brain a minute to catch up to the words that just came out of Zuko’s mouth. He’s afraid he did something wrong. Wait. Does that mean that he didn’t want it to go wrong. What is happening?
“I just didn’t think you actually liked me,” Sokka admitted. “You pulled away every time I tried to hold your hand. If I flirted with you, you froze up. I just thought that maybe you only wanted to be friends or that I was misreading the situation. You just didn’t seem that into it.”
“No! No!” The words flew out of Zuko’s mouth, seemingly without his consent. His eyes went wide and he seemed to make a decision.
“I really enjoyed all the time we spent together. I’m just, I haven’t been out for a long time and still not. My uncle knows and Toph knows too. But you, you are so out and open and proud of who you are and I’m just, argh why is this so hard..” Zuko groaned frustratingly to himself.
“I’m just not comfortable with the touching in public. I don’t think I’ve ever been comfortable in my own skin, but this? This is completely new to me! I just wanted, no I needed to take it slow. I-I like you Sokka, a lot. Probably more than I should at this point and that scares me, ok?”
The words seemed to stumble out of Zuko’s mouth and Sokka stared at him in shock. He had never heard so many consecutive words coming out of Zuko’s mouth and his story sounded so much like Sokka’s own. The insecurity and the feelings. God, they sounded like high school girls. No offence to high school girls, they probably would have handled this situation better than Sokka had.
Sokka stepped forward and slowly reached for Zuko’s hands. This time Zuko didn’t pull them away, but let his small hands rest into Sokka’s much larger ones.
“I like you too, a lot. You’re smart and you’re funny and you’re gorgeous. I guess I j-just felt afraid. I’m not used to liking someone so much and then it felt like you didn’t like me like that and I guess that just hurt me ego or something,” Sokka babbled.
“We’re both idiots, aren’t we,” Sokka said while leaning downward so he could put his forehead against Zuko’s.
“I guess we are,” Zuko said looking up into Sokka’s eyes.
“Zuko,” Sokka whispered, “can I kiss you?”
Sokka felt Zuko’s breath catch and he saw his eyes flick to his lips. He nodded shyly and leaned in just the tiniest bit. Sokka caught Zuko’s pretty mouth with his own and kissed him softly. He let his tongue slide over Zuko’s lips slowly and the smaller boy let out a small gasp. Sokka took that opportunity to slip his tongue into Zuko’s mouth and he wrapped his arms around Zuko’s waist. The smaller boy moaned softly, leaned into Sokka and put his arms around his neck.
After what felt like forever, but also like no time at all, they slowly pulled away from each other. They relished in their closeness and held each other close.
“I-I’m gonna need to take this slow,” Zuko said.
“Sweetheart, as long as you kiss me like that when we’re alone, we can take it as slow as you want,” Sokka said with a grin.
Zuko smiled and shyly leaned up again to give Sokka a quick peck.
Sokka would stay here forever if he could, wrapped up in Zuko without the prying eyes of others. Sokka felt lucky to be the person Zuko wanted to be with intimately. And he truly meant what he said. He would take it as slow as Zuko wanted, because all Sokka wanted was to get to know the beautiful boy better. Who knows, maybe one day they would be able to kiss in public. Maybe even at Aang and Katara’s wedding. But for now Sokka felt content and he would take everything Zuko wanted to give.

“I’m gonna do it, I’m gonna tell him tonight,” you say.
“You said that last week,” Virgil rolls his eyes. “And the week before,”
“I’m serious this time!”
“It’s alright if you’re not ready yet, kiddo,” Patton assures you.
“But I am ready! I’m gonna do it!”
The poor sides have had this exact conversation with you too many times by now. You’ve been crushing on Emile for a while but haven’t had the guts to tell him. Everyone’s super supportive, but they’re getting a bit annoyed, especially since Emile won’t shut up about you either when you’re not around. But this time you’re serious. Remy’s hosting a party tonight and everyone’s invited, and you’re hoping for a moment where you can tell Emile how you feel.
You put on your favorite outfit and hop in the car.
“Remy better not screw up the drinks again, last time I felt awful for days,” Roman groans.
“Oh I hope he does, that was so much fun!” Remus laughs as you pull in the driveway.
Remy swings the door open, “What’s up losers! Come on in!”
There’s some music on and tons of snacks on the table and Emile is already there.
“Hey, Y/N!” Emile waves. “How have you been?”
“I’m alright, how are you?”
“I’m great! I had multiple breakthroughs in my sessions today and most of them want to come back!”
“That’s awesome!” you smile, reaching to grab some food and a cup. “Hey Remy, what’s in this?”
“Geez, you guys are such stuck ups,” he sneers. “But no, it’s just sparkling juice. I do not want to see Roman and Remus drunk again,”
“Agreed,” you nod, grabbing a couple for you and Emile.
Logan, Janus, and Virgil seem to want to be there the least, but everyone else seems to be having a good time. Roman is singing loud to the music and everyone starts dancing. You stick with Emile, talking about anything that comes to mind. You feel so happy and comfortable with him, and sometimes it even feels like he already knows. Why tell him when you’re already in such a good place?
You go back to the table after a while to get more snacks and a drink. The juice tastes a little weird now, but it must just be that it’s been sitting out for a bit.
When you come back, Emile looks concerned, “You alright?”
“Yeah, why?”
“Patton said you needed to tell me something,”
“He what?!” you glare at him across the room.
“Is something wrong?”
“No, no, just… give me a minute,” you leave to go outside for some fresh air. Is he seriously trying to push you to do it now? You already said you would tell him today, why is an extra nudge even necessary?
You have a couple more drinks, hoping the sugar will help your light-headedness. As close as you are with Emile, the idea of things changing between you two is nerve-racking. What if he doesn’t feel the same way? What if he does but the relationship doesn’t work out so you lose your friendship? You can’t do it. You just can’t.
Or maybe you should. Might as well get it over with, right? He’s a therapist for goodness sakes, he knows better than to blatantly hurt your feelings. Even if he doesn’t feel the same, he’ll still be nice about it.
But you also could just go home. Run away. Deal with it another day. You’re feeling a bit sick and tired anyway, it might be best.
“Shut up, Remus! It’s my turn to slay the dragon witch!” you hear Roman shout from inside.
“Bitch, I am the dragon witch!”
Oh no.
You stumble inside to see them at each other’s throats, using random household objects to swordfight.
You find Emile and tug on his cardigan, “What’s…what’s going on?”
“I think Remus put something in the punch when we weren’t looking so he could get drunk, and Roman drank a lot too…”
“So that’s why I’m feeling a little tipsy! I thought the last few tasted funny,”
“The last few? How many have you had?”
“I dunno, I’m probably fine, my heads just being weird,”
“Don’t go all Sokka-on-cactus-juice on me honey,” he laughs. “Is your vision distorted at all? Are you feeling nauseous?”
“A lil’ bit…but you still look really pretty,”
“Wow, um…” he smiles nervously.
“Aw shit,”
“What’s wrong?”
“What am I doing? I can’t believe I just said that…”
“No it’s okay!” he assures you. “Let’s go outside, it’s getting a little loud in here,” You can hear Roman and Remus still screaming at each other as you walk away, holding onto Emile to keep your balance. You sit down together on the back porch steps.
“I can’t believe I thought this was a good idea,” you sigh.
“What do you mean?”
“Ugh,” as anxious as you are, the alcohol is making you feel a bit more relaxed and confident, so you might as well spit it out, “I had this whole plan for tonight. I was going to try to have a good time with you and then get you alone and finally tell you how I feel, but I’m a coward and I couldn’t do it so now I’m just embarrassing myself,”
“You feel something for me?”
“Yes! I feel a lot actually, every single day I love you and I always want to be around you. Everyone’s been teasing me about it for months and I just wanna be with you already so they’ll shut up about it but-“
Emile smashes his lips to yours, cutting you off. You completely forget what you were saying. His embrace is warm and compassionate and gives you all the answers you need.
He pulls away slowly, “I love you too,” he keeps a hand on your face, “Hopefully that was clear before, but I’m all about communication,”
“Yeah…” you nod breathlessly.
“You know what’s interesting, everyone’s been teasing me about it too,”
“Really?”
“Yup. Can’t believe they knew about both of us and just watched us dance around each other,”
“Oh believe me, they’ll pay for that,”
“Revenge is never the answer, sweetheart,” he jokes. “Come on, I’ll take you home,”
He drives you there and carries you inside, setting you on the couch and getting you some water.
“Are you feeling any better?” he asks, rubbing your back.
“I guess, it’s just that none of this seems real,”
“How come?”
“I feel like I’m gonna wake up tomorrow super hungover and find out this was all a dream and you don’t actually love me and you didn’t actually kiss me, maybe you’re not even here right now,”
“I assure you honey, you’re not hallucinating,” he takes your hands and squeezes them. “I’m real. I’m here. I love you,”
“That’s exactly what a hallucination would say!”
“Would a hallucination do this?” he kisses you again, his fingertips sliding into your hair. Who knew a cartoon geek could be such a good kisser?
“I guess…not…” you smile against his lips.
 -
You wake up to your phone ringing, begrudgingly picking it up.
“Y/N! Are you okay? You left so suddenly and weren’t answering any texts!” It’s Patton, worried about you as usual.
“I’m fine, I just didn’t feel good,”
“I’m so sorry kiddo. Did you tell Emile how you feel?”
“I…think so,” the memory is a bit fuzzy, but you’re pretty sure it happened, right? “I think he was the one who took me home, but he’s not here. Maybe I didn’t make out with him…did I?”
“What’d ya do kiddo?”
“Nothing. I’ll talk to you later,” you hang up the phone and flop back hopelessly on the couch. You remember kissing him, a lot, and falling asleep in his arms. You thought you heard him say he was going to stay, but the room is empty.
“Hey, sweetheart, I made you some breakfast,” Emile comes in from the kitchen, setting the plate down in front of you.
“You’re…you’re still here!”
“Of course,” he kisses your forehead. “Although I do have to get to the office for a couple appointments, but then I’ll be back,”
“Okay,” you nod, taking a bite of your breakfast.
“Keep drinking water and resting, okay? I love you,” he says it so naturally, as if it’s been like this for years. He presses his lips to your cheek and heads for the door.
“Wait!” you go after him. “You left this,” you hand him his tie.
“Oh! Can’t forget that,” he laughs.
“So I’ll see you later?”
“I promise,” he wraps his arms around you tight. “And every day after if that’s what you want,”
You hug him back, “That is very much what I want,”
