Milo: the idea of him doing Barbie Girl with Binna, where he is Barbie and Binna is Ken is just too funny to not be the answer.

Ellery: Poor Unfortunate Souls. He wants to be dramatic about it and he wants you to understand how dramatic he's being about it.

Patience: Hollaback Girl. You know Mel is singing backup.

Tirias: she literally cannot sing so she would either put on a song everyone knows (All Star) and let them sing it while she hams it up or announce that this is a rendition of John Cage's 4'33". These two things get different responses from the audience but they are functionally the same thing.

Wrapped Scenelets No. 96: bees

I'm writing scenelets for (most of) my Spotify Wrapped top 100 songs. Here's number 96, In The Grass by The Flashbulb.

The grass came up almost to Binna’s chest where she sat with her back to him.

“You’re not afraid of bees?” Milo asked as he came closer, the seed heads of the grass bumping against his knees.

Binna glanced over her shoulder. “Just let them try to sting me through this wool.” She’d been cropped for a week now, with her skin still almost all covered by a thin layer of white wool.

He sat down beside her, carefully keeping his plate of cookies level in one hand.

“What about your hands, though? Or your nose?”

“It’s not very likely.” In her hands, a string of tied flowers was taking shape. “Besides, I like them. We don’t have bees in Sailla-ghe. It’s too cold.”

“What about ants?”

She shook her head. “We have them, but I don’t like them. They do get up in your business.”

He silently offered her a cookie and she accepted. As he bit into his own cookie, he studied the flow of stems in her flower-string. Maybe he could figure out the pattern.

“What about you?”

He looked up. “Hm?”

“Do you like bees?”

“Ah, not really. They tickle.”

She grinned. “They tickle?”

“Yeah, when they land.” He gestured to his head flowers with a finger. “Ants and beetles usually don’t try so hard.”

“Do you ever just laugh because of a bee?”

“Yeah, every once in a while.” He watched as she stuffed the last of her cookie in her mouth and continued with her flowers. By the time she swallowed, she had a full ring hanging from her fingers, four stems wide and studded with the dense, poofy flowers that grew in patches through the grass. Pinching it between her fingers with each hand, she crowned him with it.

“I don’t need more flowers,” he said, looking up as though he could see it on his head. “Thank you, though.”

Binna just smiled and took another cookie.

Two spins for you, Ren! I'm not gonna post screenshots because I'm away from my normal computer but you got Bean & Kylis Shenanigans and DS Book 3.

I haven't really talked about either but I want to connect some of the dots for Shenanigans: Bean is a quasi-parent to Red from the Melichacha crew. When Red was six, Bean, who was training to be a teacher in the capital alongside Kylis, got his first placement as a middle school teacher in Red's town. In fact, partly because Red's mom was the placement coordinator for that area, Bean came to live with her and Red. Kylis, meanwhile, got placed somewhere else, possibly in the same city where they eventually became a drag queen's assistant. But you know they both got asked to use their teacher skills (such as the rare skill of being able to drive a car) for some real ridiculous stuff.

I had to actually go and look to see what DS book 3 was supposed to be because how the Delphonus Saga is divided up is still kind of uncertain. Here's the summary:

After months of training, the Melichacha crew is on break to go home and see their families for a month before the mission launches. This book follows all seven of them as they try to tie up loose ends and say goodbye.

I fucking love this whole book concept and I've written a tiny bit of it. The speed round version (made possible by the fact that the powerpoint intro exists) of what everyone gets up to is:

Quint faces up to the dad they're sure isn't proud of them

Vy was originally supposed to be the one non-astronaut member of the trifecta; that's changed but either way she has heart-to-hearts with her trans mom, probably about how things are going to shake out with her various partners after this mission

Red reflects a lot on home and how this might be eir last mission, in more than one way (ey're not like suicidal but this mission is scary)

Derik runs into his ex-boyfriend Mirilde in a coffee shop and gets back together with him

Wylie might still follow my old vision of making things right with his oldest sibling Snap - it depends on when Snap moved to Icepith I think

Binna has to reconcile the Silas situation and entertain some difficult feelings about her dad

Dez goes to Halli & Sam's wedding with Syndy as his plus one (originally Zalen and Silas's but I was like dude I dropped a canonical future wedding right here in TFA let's have the payoff)

Sexuality Headcanon: this one's funny because I've had Zalen for close to 20 years and I was always trying to like. put him with some lady. and for some reason it never seemed to work. I eventually took a step back and was like, well, first of all, he's obviously ace. how did I ever assume differently. And second of all, while he's still bi these women haven't been working out so maybe let's try a guy.

Gender Headcanon: he's just a regular degular cis guy, though he presents himself in what the irl western world would consider a feminine (or at least fruity) way.

A ship I have with said character: his canonical partner Silas is perfect for him actually. I can't be bothered to ship him with anyone else.

A BROTP I have with said character: Binna, from the Melichacha crew. They know each other partly through Silas and partly because of both being involved with the Melichacha mission, living in the same area when not at work, and being far away from home for months at a time when they are at work. They just vibe really well with each other and provide each other with advice for fraught sibling relationships.

A NOTP I have with said character: all the notps I would have have basically been canonized out of existence, either because the other person has been deleted, recycled into an irrelevant past relationship, or made into someone completely different (mostly Anni). But looking at past versions of Zalen the funniest/weirdest notp might actually be one of Dez's past versions, who looked distinctly more human and apparently had the capacity for romance. He was also exhaustingly charismatic and snarky and an Action Hero TM. I wouldn't put it past past me to try to make a ridiculous couple like that.

A random headcanon: he's never broken a heel walking on ice and snow in the winter but he has done it on a completely dry and normal sidewalk in the middle of summer.

General Opinion over said character: he kinda sucks but he's trying his best and I love him

Zalen looked just like he had in Zel’s photos but more worn out, with a 5 o’clock shadow that had moved a little out of the shadow phase, a braid that looked like it had recently been slept on, and a general slump about him. Binna, on the other hand, had not been done justice by the edited crew poster, which made her seem much smaller than she was. Even sitting down, Zalen was just barely taller than her shoulder, and the close crop of her wool emphasized just how much of her was muscle.

Face + Right

“What does Councillor Nenatopol want this for?” She couldn’t tell if that was a rhetorical question, or even directed at her, but she offered the explanation Tirias had given her: “He wanted to try adding a little more pizazz to the island welcome experience.” The officer pulled a face that was almost a smile, then zipped her suitcase back up and lifted it down to the floor with a thump. “All right, you’re good to go.”

Sort

The suitcase was also tall enough that his wig just brushed the top, and wide enough that he didn’t have to bend his knees as far as they would go. “How is it?” Anni asked as she got up to see for herself. “It’s good,” he said up at her. “I’ll only have to be in here until we get on the train anyway.” Anni nodded, with the sort of empty look she got when she was thinking about something.

Okay I wanna ask you Blorbo wrapped questions back lmao. I'm also curious about who you thought was coolest, who you rotated in your head the most and who was most fun to write. But also, did you have anyone that was kinda driving you up a wall but then something clicked and you really figured out how to write them? If not, who's still driving you up a wall?

Kendrick! I think you saw that I got too excited and answered my own questions over here but who has been driving me up a wall is an excellent question, lol. There are a few who aren't actively driving me up a wall (what's up with Aza huh) but the people who I still haven't got a hold on are Declan, Horatio, and Sid.

I'm almost hesitant to say Declan because I don't think I have a hard time writing him but I also feel like I haven't fully keyed into the fact that he's an autism creature of a man (and also making it clear that the way the rest of the crew does things behind his back is not them infantilizing him because of it but more complicated than that. They do think he's fragile but that's because of how he's handled his grief). Also like. He literally trusts his crew with his life. But he is so so bad at talking to them and I haven't totally figured out how that all works out.

Oops this got long so here's a cut

Horatio got a character lift in this version. He's always been a sweetheart but that evolved out of him having A Sense Of Justice while also being generally pathetic and wet and soft. Now he has the Standing family deviousness that goes along with it and I don't know how to write that. Because also he looks completely different to Sid, who knows him very well and who he's open with, than he does to Avis, who hates him somewhat for the circumstances of his birth (she tries not to because it's not his fault) but extremely much for being sun-coded in the "cheerful" and "unavoidable and intense" ways. So like, what is he plotting (especially about getting Sorian and Avis back together) and how is he plotting it and how does this dovetail with the happy-go-lucky florist which is equally as much who he is?

Sid on the other hand is challenging in the sense that writing him feels fine. He's a real everyman if you will. Except I don't get his character and I think that's a major stumbling block for AOM as a whole. Yeah, on some level he has to be the sad traumatized guy but like. How does he handle his parents trying to run his life once he takes a massive step outside of their frame of reference? How does this work with Avis's story? (Can I successfully shove these two stories into one thing that is a whole? They have so many themes in common help) In his earliest iterations he was the devil-may-care I'm-doing-my-best guy who mildly tormented Horatio Sense Of Justice and I guess they've sort of flipped? Except Sid is always the Doing My Best guy.

Also when it comes to Anni and Zel, Anni is so easy to write with all the technical stuff and much more challenging with the romance stuff and I don't want it to be that way aaaaaaa

As for who did click, I think I'm getting there with Patience (even though I haven't worked on TFA in a while), Rodney worked better when I just let him be soft, working out Fay's whole divorce history helped make her easier to write (she's not pretending to be the good suburban mom. she just is sometimes and other times she sucks), the fact that Wylie hates himself cracked his whole character wide open, and lately I've realized that a critical part of post-divorce Sorian is that he's tired. He's tired of Avis needling him, always being there but never being there for him. He's not even sure he deserves for her to be. But he kinda wishes she would just leave and move on so he can too.

I just don't feel confident in my ability to bring it out #which is probably the real problem. I think he was dead? and trapped in the time stream? #so he could just go through time and dimensions however he pleased to annoy everybody equally #he and horatio had this unexplored 'menaces to lovers' potential #his methods were questionable but he really was trying to do the right thing. I wish I had written seven million more pages of him #I originally solved Sid vs. his parents with what was essentially a heist plot crafted to convince them he was a lost cause #which was delightful but. So one thing I haven't talked about with them is orientations. They're all nonsexual by default (I count that as diffferent than ace because their species literally cannot be sexual, much like uep and neriem). But they have their own perspectives on romantic orientations. Imjen, ever the theorizer, is convinced that androids do have the capacity for romantic attraction - not least because zi is slightly obsessed with passing as a nondroid - and one day zi is going to prove it and maybe have a dramatic personal romance.

Syndy doesn't really believe in this but more than anything she is certain that she is aro, specifically loveless aro (she's the reason I extra need more loveless aros because this is not just an android thing obviously, and I also need loveless aros who are not mean like she is lol. I could believe that Gweltsen was also a loveless aro but they're busy haunting the narrative so I need some more). But even then the two of them kind of agree that there's something fundamentally different about how androids experience love, romantic or otherwise.

Mizzat likes the concept of romantic love because vi likes shipping and hangs around in fandom spaces a lot, but vi isn't sure that that's a feeling vi can feel - and likewise isn't sure that that's because of being an android, because nondroids are like that too.

Dez is the one least convinced of anything. He's not even sure whether he would know if he felt something romantic, because what would it feel like? But out of all of them he cares the least one way or the other, and he doesn't want to talk about it because he doesn't like not having any answers, and he knows this can be kind of a loaded topic with nondroids.

I'm delighted to bring you another round of find the word, because I got tagged again by @swordsoulwrites! My words this time are flash, creep, sorry, smile, and light.

All of these excerpts are from The Fourth Android.

Flash

There was no thinking about what he would rather be doing or whether Anni was packed or where Julian was. There was only him and Anni’s computer, only the numbers ticking up or down, the filenames flashing by in an endless command-line cascade.

Creep

Zel stood at Sintii’s feet for a moment, then circled around to her head. “It’s super bizarre seeing the wires in there. Otherwise it looks like you have a corpse here.” “Yeah, kinda.” She expanded the detail view for the notification like it would tell her anything useful. The filenames didn’t make any sense, and the transfer speed stayed relatively stable—so slow. “Does that not feel weird to you?” Anni straightened up from her desk. “I mean, kinda. But I thought it was creepier when Dez was just dismembered body parts.”

Sorry

He took a draw from the joint, breathing the smoke out again after a moment, then lazily offered it over to Dez. Before Dez could decline, that hand straightened back up again and the joint disappeared from Dez’s line of vision. “Sorry.”

Light

(putting this one first because it comes before Smile in the same scene)

From the inside, he could see that the roof was really glass where it arched over the bar just to the left of the door. A nebulous early-morning light filtered down through it, illuminating the leaves and broad shoulders of the uep behind the bar, the tallest person Dez had ever seen. He’d thought Binna was tall. He’d thought Tirias was tall. But next to this person, he was a little above elbow height.

Smile

Milo took a seat near the end of the bar, leaving Dez the stool at the very end. The gigantic uep smiled down at them—they must smile down at everyone—and said, “Welcome.”
