I think this scene is so important. He’s right, as someone who chose to defend, Mash needs to stand strong. As someone in the image of a shield, the personification of endurance, she cannot break and fall. The morale of both herself and others depend on that.

In the same way, Jeanne is the flag bearer that leads her people to battle, it encourages others to fight. If these people known to have less combat is fighting their headrest, going in first and standing tall than it helps morale to keep fighting their hardest.

It’s like Rin says how projection is—so long as one believes it’s real than it won’t break. The minute you think it’s fake is when everything falls apart. So I really like Caligula telling Mash to stand tall—she has to, she needs to.

People only ever talk about battle experience and strength, but morale is just as important in the fast of battle, and at least amongst comrades.
