We Welcome Cancy Chu - Our 1st Fulbright Scholar!

Candy Chu, a Ph.D. candidate from the Grimwade Centre for Cultural Materials Conservation at the University of Melbourne, has joined our Heritage Science Research and Testing Lab for the 2022–2023 academic year. 

Trained in conservation and book arts, Chu will be testing synthetic paper to further her research on the conservation of the material in cultural collections. 

She hopes to determine the best methods for repair on damaged synthetic paper, which requires a different treatment than normal paper because of its plastic components. This research dovetails with her research on conservation of plastics found in paper-based collections.

Candy sat Jisung down on the toilet, noticing the way he flinched slightly. She rummaged around the bathroom and eventually found the first aid kit they had in the cabinet. She finally got to work, a little annoyed at Changbin for not telling her how badly Jisung was actually hurt. He had cuts on his face and his knee was bleeding, as well as a black eye and a cut lip. His nose had just stopped bleeding by the time her and Woojin had arrived back at the dorm.

Candy told him what she was going to be doing, explaining that some of it will burn or sting when she applied things to clean it. She took her time, making sure he was comfortable with everything before continuing to the next spot. A lot of bandages were used and Jisung squeezed her arm so hard it left a mark. After about half an hour alone in the bathroom, Candy was finished. She was putting the supplies away, making a mental reminder to get more sometime. Jisung stayed at the toilet, looking at the ground. Once she put it all away, she turned to him and leaned against the sink.

"Am I going to hear it from you or from the boys?" Candy asked him, tilting her head slightly.

"I know you liked him," Jisung mumbled, rubbing his hands together. "But he was kind of a jerk today."

"Start from the beginning please."

"We left JYP and were walking back because it was nice today. . .

"Jisung, you're practically sprinting back," Felix laughed, making Jisung stop.

"I can't want a shower?" Jisung crossed his arms.

"A shower, or Candy's attention?" Minho mumbled, making Jeongin and Seungmin laugh.

"Come on guys, it isn't like he's in love with her," Chan stated, making everyone laugh. Jisung just pouted, walking ahead of the group again.

"Hey!" Someone yelled, catching Jisung's attention. It was Yedam.

"Oh, hey," Jisung stopped, the rest of the boys stopping behind him as Yedam approached.

"Where's Candy?"

"She's with Woojin, they are spending the day together. What do you need from her?" Changbin asked. "You couldn't text her?"

"I wanted to ask her in person, but obviously she's already on to the next guy," Yedam rolled his eyes.

"What is that supposed to mean?" Jisung stepped forward.

"Her and Hyunsuk almost hooked up before she left for L.A. I'm just saying she's more than open to anyone who gives her the smallest bit of attention," Yedam raised his hands in fake surrender, a smirk on his face. "I mean, what more would you expect from a Cali girl?"

"I think you should take that back," Jisung stepped toward Yedam again. Everyone was silent as they looked between the two boys, barely any space between them.

"No."

Jisung pushed Yedam, stating again that he should take it back. Yedam, being just as headstrong, refused again. Jisung pushed again, making Chan step toward them and tell them to cut it out. He was just a fraction of a second too late before chaos ensued after Yedam swung at Jisung.

Immediately Chan was trying to break them apart, but Jisung was hellbent on teaching Yedam a lesson. Any punch he could get in he could, with Yedam landing a few as well. Somehow Jisung got around Chan, punching Yedam so hard he fell back. Chan pushed Jisung behind him and Changbin pulled him even farther away. Jisung was breathing heavy, the taste of blood filling his mouth. He wiped his mouth and blood was all over his hand.

As Yedam walked away, Jisung spit at his feet. Their eyes connected and if Changbin's grip was any less tight round two would have begun.

"What?" Jisung asked, looking at everyone.

"I'm not going to say I approve," Minho started. "But I almost did the same."

"Someone call Candy," Hyunjin said.

"Jisung got into a fight with someone on the way back from practice. His lip is bleeding and he has a black eye," Changbin said, having already been dialling Candy.

“Oh my gosh. Who was it?”

“Yedam.”

"And then you came," Jisung shrugged.

"You fought him, because of. . .me?" Candy asked, her emotions all over the place.

"I don't know if what he said was true, and I don't care if it is, but he isn't going to get away with talking badly about you in front of anyone," Jisung looked at her. "I would do anything to stop that from happening, I'd even fight him all over again."

"Are you guys done?" Minho yelled, knocking on the door. "I have to pee."

Candy shot a smile at Jisung before opening the door and letting Minho in.

Halloween's my favourite holiday - it's the one bright spot for me as summer fades and the days get colder and longer. Every year, I love challenging myself to make a variety of Pokemon Halloween treats in October. After my mom's death this month, it was nice to have a fun project to focus on again, and I'm really proud of what I accomplished.

Here’s:

Pumpkin Pikachu and Gastly hot chocolate bombs

Pikachu, Piplup, and Drifblim Pokemon Go hat cookies

Gengar and Litwick petit fours

Gengar and candy corn Sinistea chocolate cakes

We made all these treats live on Twitch, and we also raised $200 for the American Heart Association!

We made the cakes in our last stream on Halloween night, and donors could customize the cakes, so our mod SunnyTheYamper donated and requested the cancy corn Sinistea, which I’m now low key obsessed with.

“LE-GASP” theres a watermelon pastel person vibrating as they spot the changed percy, their eye’s wide with glee. “ANOTHER CANDY! OH MY GOSH ITS SO NICE TO MEET YOU IM CANRA! WHATS YOUR NAME? She giggled in glee and nodded along, bouncing on her toes. 

“Yes!! Yes yes! Cancy is an adorable name I love it! I love YOUR name! I’m sooo glad there’s someone else who thinks like me, I can tell we’re just going to get along swimmingly! Yellow is my favorite color and I just adoore anything sweet or spicy!” She didn’t take a breath either.

I figure a flying colorless unit would more likely be a bow user or a healer, but the idea of Corrin throwing sharpened candy canes at his enemies from atop a mount (flying reindeer, I say) is hilarious. Especially because it brings to mind the idea of him making the candy cane shanks himself by just sucking on them until there's a pointy end. Also, I still say we need a candy cane lance user.
