That pig nosed turtle looks so happy!
Pig-nosed Turtle (Carettochelys insculpta), juvenile, family Carettochelyidae, found in northern Australia and southern New Guinea
ENDANGERED.
These turtles have no scales, and thus have a leathery shell. Its shell is made of bone, however, unlike “softshell turtles” in the family Trionychidae.

FLY RIVER TURTLE (Pig-nosed Turtle)
Carettochelys insculpta
©Laura Quick
The pig-nosed turtle is unlike any other species of freshwater turtle. The feet are flippers, resembling those of marine turtles. The nose looks like that of a pig, having the nostrils at the end of a fleshy snout, hence the common name.
The carapace is typically grey or olive, with a leathery texture, while the underneath plastron is cream-coloured.
Pig-nosed turtles are not completely aquatic. Little is known about their general behavior, as there have been few studies in the wild. Their known extreme aggression in captivity suggests the species is markedly more territorial than most other turtles and tortoises.
They are omnivores, eating a wide variety of plant and animal matter, including the fruit and leaves of figs, as well as crustaceans, molluscs and insects.

Animal of the Day!
Pig-nosed Turtle (Carettochelys insculpta)
(Photo from Shutterstock)
Conservation Status- Endangered
Habitat- Australia; New Guinea
Size (Weight/Length)- 22.6 kg; 127 cm
Diet- Leaves; Fruit; Nuts; Fish
Cool Facts- While the pig-nosed turtle looks more similar to ocean dwelling turtles with its defined flippers, they are a completely fresh water species. They also have a leathery shell rather than the hard carapace that most fresh water turtles support. And, of course, their cutest aspect is their nose. This nose allows them to stay completely submerged underwater as they breathe air, reducing the threat of aerial predators like eagles. Due to the illegal pet trade, their wild population has declined over the last several decades. Captive breeding in zoos have been trying to increase their population with hope for the future.
Rating- 11/10 (The nose adds to the cuteness.)
