lowkey if i had the time i would so write a girlcedes and fem!lestappen fics where nico and lewis go through all the shit of the late 00's and early 10's as the first female f1 drivers and then it implodes in 2015/2016 and everyones saying that the silver wars just a catfight and "oh what do you expect with girls on the team" (bc we all know journalists would call them girls not women lol) which is exactly the period of time where max is coming into f1 and charles is coming up the f3 and f2 ranks which means they've got usual misogyny and the "look at merc obviously women in the sport doesn't work" and the consequences of that likely being that lestappen refuse to publicly engage with each other (and also defo 2019 gets called like the f1 catfight 2.0 bc god forbid women have emotions)

looking back…….

uncharacteristically, i took a hiatus in 2022. despite bouts of inactivity, by instinct, i turn to gifsets as my personal reprieve but this year has been doubly heavy (which must hold true for a lot of us by now). chronic fatigue left the latter, greater chunk of the year a blur. oof. stress aside, i have completed a couple of releases this year. this post is somehow most of them. though if you ask me to fill up any sort of bingo, please, i decline.

still in the process of retrieving my giffer groove back so may this write-up inspired by my brilliant mutuals suffice.

a preview of the titles you'll be able to read underneath. four dramas sorted chronologically... those that i remember finishing (important criteria!!) and to round them off, one i am in the midst* of watching. there's another that i omitted to not do an overlong list but a shoutout to the ever-charming law of the lady.

if you were wondering why this, out of the blue, became my tumblog title you probably weren't but here's the reason: i was just that into it. i got winded into following its daily stream timing (10pm sharp) roped a friend in, too hahaha no but seriously, 'girlbosses in the fashion industry' seem like most stale premise but who knew a cdrama had what it takes for it to not be made basic. the <blossom> magazine being on the cusp of medium change in the year 2016/2017 - print versus online. ideals it stands for contested by how the target audience can relate versus how much profit they can rake in. fractures forming within the staff and at the eye of the storm is who gets to be the new editor. the two candidates: miranda chen kaiyi and helen xiao hongxue. yes, i put their english names there not just as decor. we start the series acquainted with kaiyi, complete with a devil wears prada-esque intro. she’s exacting to down to the minute details, she’s the public face of the publication except she signs off as the deputy editor. the parent company assigns the chief editorship of the besieged magazine to the person at the helm of the successful hongkong branch, hongxue. her alliance (or supposed defeat) is the key to win <blossom>.

besides the main leads, the ensemble consists of ladies in positions ranging from human resources head down to the rookie assistants. different degree of darlings the <blossom> squad may be with the vision admirably determined but the 29eps can still be trimmed down imho. i could go on and on (towards spoiling the entire thing) but what i'll say is the vermin masquerading as men who surrounded them, expecting catfights, were bound to lose. thoroughly. why? they were blinded by insecurity projections. also because they cannot fathom that women naturally are inclined to admire other women, that strength stems from being cognizant of mutual sorrows. plus, they're not privy to the wooing power of chocolate.

LAMU (jackie li) IS A STAR. let me state that for the record. i am very salty the webdrama's all but buried under controversies (ugh, plural) because it brought me so much unbridled joy. queen lau was so unserious it has a palace p.a. system with functions such as weather forecasts, sports commentary, serenades, etcetera like... heylo?

heipang, a countryside girl prodded by her mother (to fix their local village curse) heads to the capital to be wedded. there, she finds out her longtime penpal/betrothed boy is the new emperor and only hitch to her happily ever after is he does not really know her. sorta hates her existence, even. she meets her father first, the chief counselor aka the antagonist, she's christened a new name befitting the nation's phoenix. she meets a handmaid, she becomes steadfast on her side ever since. the dowager empress, she leaves an even greater impression as untraditional daughter-in-law. she meets her half-sister, she bonds with her thus averting a rivalry. she meets her husband's motley crew (the royal chef, the chief guard, the court physician), she wrecks them before lunch. you get the gist. her same-age castmates, limited acting aside, were carried by the fact lamu's so adept in comparison. i appreciate a comedy that doesn't try that hard in the outrageous department. 'twas possible because of her pun timing, her reactions, her charisma - anyone with sense would be buying the fantasy. i say fantasy but it's the core message: that liu jinfeng's self-assured enough to ignore/convert her detractors as she dances. the lovely queen leading the entire palace during catchy dance sequences, that's quite novel, isn't it?

gorgeous poster, yes/yes? here's another from their promo spread. hailing from the writing and direction of samantha lee is a project i had my eye on since its announcement. of her two films i previously saw, my reception were polar opposites. hence, cautious, i approached what is to be my third filipino gl series. [previous ones were betcin and fluid. pearl next door is in my list, promise, i just haven't gotten around to continuing so it's fairer not to count it yet.]

if you've seen my billie & emma gifset before, harry & luna's story is like that but grown up. not an exact copy since i thought that was meant for lil' unknowing queer me but the same cinematic, almost nostalgic lens applies. harry is a nighttime dj and luna is a... well... vampire. the pace is just right and soft (without insulting) kind of coddling. finally, a lovi poe acting thing i can sit down for where i can be mesmerized without suffering a cheating/stealing husbands storyline. janine gutierrez has the brightest smile, beautiful like the moon. they both had spaces to grow in the narrative and if there's one thing direk sam and i will find sure common ground is her punctuating that with the perfect soundtrack. of course, it would be a crime if that wasn't the case, their meet-cute was at a radio station. local sapphic references are just bound to hit different *wipes tear* a fitting august gift.

i love, love, love how all my mutuals went, "jeon yeobin and nana lesbians" after the vague initial boyfriend-ghosted-her-and-she-stumbles-into-an-alien-cult synopsis came out. ironically, we didn't even need to be ribbing each other 'cause they were, in fact, e.t. enthusiasts reconnected~ with obvious next step: risking it all by choice. not sorry about all of this, donghwi.

negl don't really have notes about glitch (minus the usual problem where kdramas don't edit out superfluous footage). they did everything better than any given entry of the ntflx originals roster so if there's one kdrama you should pick up from their catalogue this year, let it be this zany adventure and i promise you won't be disappointed.

my friend who loves kinou nani tabeta recommended this. saw the first two episodes as of this post but i have read the manga, gobbled that up with a quickness.

*you can gauge how anticipatory i am of an adaptation if i go and seek out the source material... some cases, it ruins things for me lol but i am of the belief if they're done well, they'd hold up on their own merit with/without changes when i compare.

in the case of tsukutabe, from what i've seen, the dialogue and interactions were lifted right from manga page to the actresses doing the scenes. yes, scenes upon scenes about enjoying heavenly food. fluffy af, the notion of finding an avenue of bonding in this day and age of tightly packed yet ever-distant neighbors. nomoto and kasuga have unrelated jobs but happen to notice each other in their daily comings and goings – the whiff of her cooking, the common denominator. i will be taking my time with this series so i'm unlikely to finish this before new year's eve but i just want to mark it having aired on nhk, a public channel in japan. the creator emphasizes how cooking as a hobby isn't only a means to be someone's proper wife/mother + portions of food mustn't be treated according to gendered prejudice but it should be up one's pleasure and capability to eat. i know many more shared meals await them and that thought makes me feel lighter already. all it took was some courage to ask for her to find what she was searching.

As someone who lived through 2014 - 2016, I'm prob a bit gun-shy, but for good reason. Not that I'm predicting another Snakegate, but I see this particular issue dogging Taylor until she faces it head-on, unfortunately. I don't think Taylor would be accused of putting the onus on Olivia as long as she is complimentary of her and clear that there is no beef on other side. Heck, pull a reverse uno and put the onus on the media for fueling misogynistic catfight tropes before "girl summer" even ends!

The BAD SH Timeline....Pt 1

As requested by nobody, save yours truly....

2016

March/April  - Filming on the Plaiderdale pilot begins, Cole’s definitely interested and already fighting off a bunch of castmates....PP seemingly has limited socialization, but shit IS happening.

There are indications Cole might not have been the only dude she hooked up with in those 2 weeks.

April/May - Cole goes to Botswana and is back in NYC with his friends, when everybody’s in town for Upfronts, he decides he’s moving to LA (for PP), she’s seemingly still also involved with Sam, but Cole begins introducing her to his closest friends in LA throughout the summer....

August - It’s Cole’s bday, but PP’s decided to fuck off to NC to spiral miserably, even tho it appears she and Cole had grown much closer just before/during Comicon.

September - Everybody’s back in Van and PP is still slutting it up....Cole is now making mopey, shading posts, even....

October - PP mopes back to NC for a few days to sulk over her goddaughter/leash she’d eventually forget. Interestingly, we have the first of positive recorded interactions, SH seem to have gotten together at some point. This is probably when MUA Erin famously told PP to go for it.

Nov/Dec - Verrryyyy much apart for the holidays, tho Cole seems quite happy in his interactions and supportively likes PP’s NYE post. We also know they’ve become a thing throughout this....oh and Crotchi psychotically stalking Cole and PP doing next to nothing, oddly.

Also, despite her propensity to sidepiece peeps, already established she and KokeJ haaattteee each other.

2017

Jan - show premieres, floodgates open in fandumb

Feb/March - Cole’s having to do “bestie” bullshit with KokeJ, PP has a small role in a movie/visiting fam.....tho it seems like all’s well, in retrospect, some weird, public sulking from both on Twitter, might actually indicate a split of some sort.

Although they’re clearly together when they interview at a Con, PP seems to not be able to help herself and hits on other male cast mates, there and in Mexico.

April - Mexico! PP whines about a UTI (supposedly), flirts for the cameras with KokeJ (who, interestingly, is booted back to the USA, early!), picks a catfight with Assleigh, and while she DOES stay behind and do cultural stuff with Cole, afterwards, she appears bored by it and gets pissy with fans, cuz moar interested in Cole....

May/June(??) - Back in LA, does see lots of Cole, however.....when the cast attends Wizardcon in Philly, while not nearly as utterly obnoxious as KokeJ (this begins my full contempt for his ass), she’s still openly jealous of Cole’s line of fans, which she and Crotchi bitch about on camera. During the panel, I now suspect the “ribbing” she and Cole exchanged was a LOT less “good natured” than we thought at the time.....”dogs, cuz I’m whipped....” could indicate how manipulative PP already was.

In fact, it’s all enough for Cole that he ditches everybody when their flight’s delayed and goes to NYC for a week ALONE....which, again, something we all rationalized at the time, but in retrospect, indicates something was a LOT moar negative....it also indicates PP posted her first pic of the back of his head for his Bday that was taken there, as a sort of apology.

Everybody returns to Van, Cole and PP fly up separately, again, indicating all was probably not nearly so great as we thought. Though upon returning, the cast are out a lot and SH seem to get along well.

July/August - all seems, actually, quite great for the bulk of the summer, SH are very romantic at Comicon, we get snippets of them together at various parties and events, etc....ONLY indication of shit being amiss is actually Cole with a bit of payback when Crotchi either crashes or is invited along by PP for an afternoon.....and Cole puts up with her bullshit for once, utterly enraging PP, who is also noted for this by innumerable fans they encounter throughout.

Fake Tits begins filming/also stalking Cole, He shuts it down and, to her credit, while she’s an asshole, she does manage to take “no” for an answer.

Sept/Oct - Actually, all’s still progressing quite nicely (or seemingly so). Cole is endlessly romantic.....and then......Hart. And PP develops a big assed inappropriate “crush” on her sleazy new friend. Cole attempts to make the best of it, but it’s apparent there’s a LOT of problems headed into November.

Cole visits NYC to do press, in Duan’s vlog/interview, he again seems quite sad, I just thought it was him being mopey at the time, but likely they were again on the outs a bit/PP’s “friendship” was probably also worrisome....

Nov - Stinkbrosgiving and Cole seems beyond miserable....and NOT just because of KokeJ’s utter disgustingness. By the time he returns to filming, he looks, literally, ill in those episodes. PP even makes a point of meeting up with FB for lunch upon her return to NYC and seems to ostracize Cole.....TBFit seemed like they reconciled (”dancing in my seat” as the flight landed and being so late to taping.....but for all we know? That was about FB....doubtful, but there are definitely issues).

Dec - shit’s been patched up again headed into the holidays. PP seemingly is getting better at balancing, etc.....Cole takes her to Hawaii, where they do have a glorious time....Upon returning, he’s happy and supremely relaxed. She takes to spiraling all over again....(yes, this is now January)

CATFIGHT- 2016 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Veronica (Ashley Oh) and Ashley (Anne Heche) were friends in college before falling out.

Years later theyre paths cross again.

Veronica is now a rich wine loving bitch.

Ashley is a nice struggling artist.

They meet at a party and old tensions rise to the surface. They have a CATFIGHT, which Ashley wins. Veronica goes into a coma for two years and when she wakes up, everything has changed. She is now poor and Ashley is on top of the world. Ashley is now a bitch also.

Veronica is out for revenge so tracks her down for round 2....

Quite an interesting movie. Strongest aspect of the film is two very strong performances from both leads. And a few good supporting characters also.

Do think the film goes in too many directions and doesnt really pull it off. Although the film was quite outlandish anyway, the war stuff and the late night tv host stuff was rubbish should have taken it all out. Movie would have been a lot stronger if it was more grounded in reality. If we had the same feud between Veronica and Ashley and took out the social commentary.

top 3 WORST films :))

Omg while I do not have the authority to proclaim these "worst of all time", I can certainly call these films "really bad" lmao

1. A.X.L (2018) - watched this on a plane some years ago. Interesting concept. Reminds me a lot of those direct-to-dvd films you got as a kid from the bargain bin. Except no nostalgic influence whatsoever. It had direct ads for products thrown in which was so funny.

2. Catfight (2016) - not a fan of this one. Both actresses are great, but the way the story unfolded was just not for me. It felt very mean-spirited with no release which just ended up making it frustrating. Not that I don't like dark comedies, I usually do, but this one didn't hit for me.

3. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019) - it was either this one or The Last Jedi, but at least that one had some positive elements. This was just frustrating all around. Way too long, and absolutely no connection to the lead characters, story, or anything at this point in the series. One good thing was going to the theater with my friends to see it and the audience trashing it the whole way through.

dancing in the dark

as you might have known already, i work in bursts (re: not your everyday person) it's not so easy for me to commit to something, especially to as dreadful a task as writing. yet i managed to write posts almost everyday ever since i introduced this blog! this month has been a blessing. i have a personal masterpost of all my contents here so far, and i can't believe i reached 11 titular pieces but it's just the 10th of may. i have exceeded myself. i briefly remember the good old days back in 2015-2016, when i was writing a chapter of my book everyday after class and posting it on the same day. now i managed to do it again! this is a tribute to the younger me, ayreng, who was a creative enterprise.

in retrospect, the common denominator that i find now and before is i was inspired. i was in that zone. i was in love with writing before, and now im getting hooked to it again.

writing was my first love, and now that i am older and wiser, i am confident in my current knowledge and capabilities that i can shower it with much better affection from my heart, time of my day, and authenticity from my soul. 

i wasn't always enlightened in my path this way. i was an immature kid, i fought with my siblings and answered my parents back, i was a teenager who explored the internet and the darkest agencies of humanity too early and got involved with online catfights; i was a depressed homebody who didn't want to do the dishes and a grade-conscious student that wanted glittering objects and worldly validations. pursuing literature as a bachelor degree was not even in my mind, because all throughout highschool i was admitted to a class specializing in STEM curriculum that prioritized in practical research. my 'dream job' was to be a civil engineer: designing roads and buildings, constructing sturdy homes in towns and cities. it's only when i got shortlisted in the college of arts and letters requesting for a sample of my piece that i started to reconsider

...that maybe i was really meant for the arts.

arts is too broad to be a job prospect, right? what am i gonna do there? what point am i making here? but that's the exact reason why it's amazing. the universality of arts and how it transcends bounds by essentially functioning on the same processes in different forms gives you the opportunity to be fluid and apply your skill in whatever you choose to do or wherever you end up in. who knows, maybe i'm an online blogger today, and be a published author tomorrow; a scriptwriter in the next few weeks, a director in the next few months, and a series producer in the next few years? who knows? (right from the start, maybe i got the engineering part right... though not in plots of land, but story plots)

the least common denominator among them all is the skill of having your own vision for what you want to make. as long as you get that part in the spotlight, even if all you see around you is pitch black, you can dance your way into the dark.

p.s. i guess this is the end of the first season of my reflective pieces. blog posts will be slowed down here or entirely stop for awhile. i might get inspired again and outline a series of posts for a potential second season once i hit a big milestone again in my life, and i get new realizations that i desire to speak out.

i'm now heading from spring to summer, and so i want to meet my next calling halfway: writing fiction. this next stage will be all about my characters' voices! enough about me for now haha. until then, またね!

Meet Carter James. Born in 1985, he's currently thirty-eight years old. He was born and raised in Colorado, and his family comes from old money. Carter attended college at Columbia University, and it was during his senior year there that he first met a sophomore from Yale University by the name of Lauren Colby. The two would meet in a much more formal capacity a few years down the road when Carter's father was elected governor of Colorado from 2008 to 2016. Lauren's family hosted a fundraiser for Carter's father during his reelection campaign, and the two began seeing each other. Unfortunately, their relationship was plagued with troubles from the very beginning, thanks to Lauren's aunt. Well, more like sister given how close in age she and Krystina are. Needless to say, a love triangle was soon born, and it was like Alexis and Krystle all over again. After all of the backstabbing and catfights, Carter eventually chose Krystina, leaving his first choice feeling second best, yet very validated by Taylor Swift's Is It Over Now?, especially the "If she's got blue eyes, I will surmise that you'll probably date her." lyric.

Carter currently works for a big investment firm in Colorado, and the jury is still out on whether or not he and Krystina are still together to this day. Either way, he's learned and grown a lot from his days as a playboy and has recently begun to consider dabbling in a little bit of politics himself. Will Colorado soon see its first legacy family in the governor's mansion? Maybe. Then again, maybe not.

When I tell people I love pop culture, they always assume I just mean celebrity catfights, the Kardashians, or whatever else trashy tabloids like to talk about.

And although all of things peak my interest from time to time, I’m talking about so much more than that. I’m referring to things like the movies that have had the impact to shape the way society views themselves. I’m talking about how a celebrity death can throw off the trajectory of an entire economy in the blink of an eye. I’d go as far as to talk about those toys that we had growing up and just how big of an impact that they’ve had on all of our personalities, even the world as a whole.

The best example I can give is the 2016 presidential election. Let’s be real here, if a certain animal at a Cincinnati Zoo wouldn't have died that year, all of our lives would be much MUCH different. 

Think about it people.

Anne Heche

1969-2022.

My experience with Anne Heche movies is a little spotty. She was the semi-centered best friend of Catherine Keener in Nicole Holofocener’s comedy of neurotic manners Walking and Talking. She was the long-suffering wife of Donnie Brasco in 1997, the same year she played the frazzled straight woman in Wag the Dog (her  masterful performance was a series of inspired double-takes), the sister of a murdered pedestrian in I Know What You Did Last Summer (her two-dimensional performance one-upped the other actors), and a seismologist in the disaster film Volcano where she looked no more moronic than anyone else. In 2004’s Birth she played Nicole Kidman’s sister-in-law (and the film’s unwitting and surprising deux ex machina). Then I lost track of her as she did smaller movies, ones that didn’t hit theaters but never really became cult favorites. It happens. Not every actor gets the roles needed to break through (that Heche’s three-year relationship to Ellen DeGeneres became tabloid fodder overshadowing her work didn’t help) and Heche turned more frequently to television and theater where she did very well.

 And in 2016 she did Catfight. As struggling artist Ashley Miller, whose dissatisfaction with her stalled career boils over when she runs into her hated school rival (Sandra Oh) which leads to a series of no-holds-barred fistfights that regularly change the two women’s fortunes. It was the blackest of satires and Heche played her part with a ferocity, an outsize loathing that I’ve rarely seen any other actress match.  It’s worth seeing not to indulge facile comparisons with the sad spectacle of her end, but to demonstrate that greatness can come from anywhere, for any reason. RIP.
