IMMORTAL LIFE -> Chen Yuanzhou's confession 💙💜
"I always acted as if I were apart from the world. I played my flute, fished and traveled everywhere but belonged nowhere and to no one all my life. Then, I met you. And suddenly, I was part of this world alongside you. I worried for you, felt happy when you were happy… It doesn't feel so much like you changed me as you made me truly exist in this world."

So I dragged myself kicking and screaming and, yes, mostly in denial, through the last episodes of A Journey to Love.
My thoughts can be summarized as follows:
Tumblr media
Obviously this is mainly due to me being horrifically traumatized by Yuan Lu’s death. After all, they told us from the get go he wouldn’t live to 20. They made it clear he had a deadly heart disease. And then. They had the nerve. They had the audacity. They had the actual fucking bahoonga BALLS to follow through!?
But then I found myself sobbing at literally every good guy death scene, plus all of the mourning scenes. The latter was in large part thanks to Alen Fang's acting - deepest apologies to him for just referring to his character as 'the slutty one' for the majority of the show. Not that I was wrong. Also thanks to strong performances from He Lan Dou for Yuan Lu's death.
Anyway so I need to add this gif x4 for the Liudao Hall babies:
Qian Zhao, da ge, who made mistakes but always did right in the end
Sun Lang, who just wanted to hold something fluffy at the end, dying a hero
Yuan Lu, who died in his princess's arms after running to deliver a letter rendered useless by the Emperor of An's greed.
Yu Shisan, who lived as he lived and had such a happy moment with Chu Yue right before it all became irrevocable.
When they added Yu Shisan to the snowball fight, I just about lost it. Liu Yuning's acting there - having the realization about Shisan's death as he watched them play in real time was so well done. Really hurt.
Plus I'll make a couple of versions with edits.
Tumblr media
For the Wu Emperor. I knew it was gonna happen from the spoilers but damn, him genuinely learning the value of friendship and brotherly love made me root for him. Dude did not deserve to go out like that. Thank goodness for the magic of CDramas where he lived just long enough to pass on his will to Ning Yuanzhou, and do one last act of good.
It also ensured Duke of Chu was able to pass on his command to his daughter, Chu Yue, before dying of the same (was not clear if her bro died or not, or if dad was always going to choose her).
And for Deng Hui. Started out thinking he was just a sexist bastard. Turns out he was one of the most principled characters in the show.
Their deaths didn't make me cry, but I respect them.
Also loved Chen Du Ling's (Empress of Wu) small part in this. I may not like all of her characters but she can deliver a scene and hold a room. It was a bit cathartic to see her put every man in their place, and basically decide the fate of two countries, even though her lament that she'd only ever have power through another held true.
Ah Ying, my baby girl. This is a character that could have turned people off from the beginning. Thanks to strong writing and stronger acting, it did not. I was super impressed with He Lan Dou. She can dial it up and dial it down in a single take, and can play big dramatic scenes with a subtlety that some older actors cannot grasp. This was the first thing I've seen her in, though for her and Chen You Wei (Yuan Lu) I might watch Tiger and Crane if someone tells me it's good.
I still think Li Tongguang is a perverted and creepy child, who never managed to learn (except in literally the last ep), but at least I trust that he will treat Ah Ying well. I don't hold it against him for screwing up the battle - he was trying to be benevolent but made a bad choice.
The main couple win it for me this year. What an inspired pairing. They beat out heavy hitters including Bai Lu x Everyone which was near impossible. Something to do with letting Liu Shi Shi use Liu Yuning's height against him at every possible moment. Also the 'if you die, I'll finish the job and then follow you' is my favorite dynamic. I swear when Ruyi threw those bombs, NOT NEEDING TO HAVING ALREADY SUCCEEDED AT KILLING THE KING AND PRINCE, just to join him, y'all I died. Good for whoever posthumously gave her the Marquis title on her own (not just furen) - couldn't tell if it was Li Tongguang acting as regent or Dayang (great shot of those two at the end).
The final episode was one of the best final cdrama episodes I've seen. I might have to make another post about that. In sum, despite losing a large portion of the well-loved cast, the remainder gave a world-class finale. The visuals were incredible (explosions are my favorite). The final scene was beautiful (though I'm a bit surprised they gave it to Chu Yue instead of Ah Ying who knew all 6 of them closely).

Tumblr media
PROPAGANDA:
PESCI - "His stand is a fishing rod called Beach Boy that can go through walls and hook on to people" "Never actually catches fish, but I think he has a close enough association with fishing to qualify. His name means "fish" in Italian"
CHEN YUANZHOU - "He fishes to provide for the sect, improve his cultivation, and just because he loves it"

Fic: The unsolved mystery of Qian Zhao's spouse
Relationships: (established, implied) Qian Zhao/Yu Shisan
Chapter: 1/3 |[read it on ao3]|next
Tumblr media
3 years before canon
"Why did you reject such a good catch?” Sun Lang stares dreamily at the figure leaving the courtyard, “She's pretty, loaded, and kind-hearted! I saw her rescue a stray cat the other day!"
Qian Zhao ignored the question, shrugging off Sun Lang's arm slung casually around his shoulder as he stalked off to the training grounds.
He was defensive, Sun Lang notes, feeling a sly smile form on his face. This was something good, and he would get to the bottom of it.
But he would require more help to make Qian Zhao crack, if he did not want to give up such interesting gossip material, Sun Lang decides.
(“Yu Shisan!” Sun Lang bursts into the Asura Commander’s office later that day.
“What happened?” Yu Shisan’s head snaps up, worry clouding his face.
“Lao-Qian rejected Miss Jiang’s marriage offer earlier today!”
The worry eases from Yu Shisan's face, brows furrowing in thought before he shrugs, “not everyone wants to get married, you know.”
“But I mean, don't you think Lao-Qian has a lover or something, to reject the prestigious Jiang family?”
That gives Yu Shisan pause, and he finally looks up from his paperwork with an amused glint in his eyes.
That's more like it, Sun Lang thinks smugly).
It takes three days of Sun Lang bugging him before Qian Zhao cracks over lunch. There had been a lull in the missions for their respective Human and Heavenly path divisions, and there was nothing better to do than to continuously train, day in and day out.
(Nothing to do apart from trying to find out Qian Zhao's secret, that is).
"I'm married," Qian Zhao says, as casually as one would comment on the weather that Sun Lang nearly missed it.
As it was, he nearly choked on his rice at the sudden announcement, lamenting the fact that he was the only one here to bear witness to this news.
Where was Yu Shisan when he needed him? He silently curses the man, the most handsome always reaches the latest! what bullshit!
"Say that again?" Sun Lang demands, once he had gulped down enough water to clear his throat.
"I'm married, that's why I rejected Miss Jiang." Qian Zhao says slowly, as if Sun Lang were a particularly slow recruit that had just joined.
"But-but-to who?" Sun Lang splutters, mind still scrambling to catch up after the bombshell that Qian Zhao just dropped.
The man stares at him, unblinking, expression as impassive as ever as he deadpans, "None of your concern."
With that, Qian Zhao gets up with his empty bowl, and turns to leave.
Qian Zhao was swarmed the next day, the news of his marriage having spread like wildfire the previous night.
There was no shortage of people crying, some begging him to reconsider his life choices, others bemoaning that such an eligible bachelor had gone off the market. (He had, in fact, been ‘off the market’ for a year now).
His subordinates were unfocused throughout the day, their sword forms messy and uncoordinated.
Instead of correcting their mistakes, they pestered him relentlessly for details about his marriage, unsubtly asking for the lucky person's name, and what about them made their Commander willingly tie his life to theirs.
All that earned them was ten more laps around the palace, and they promptly shut up afterwards.
He catches wind of a betting pool opened regarding the identity of his spouse, the bets ranging from Ning Yuanzhou to Marquis Chen, their guesses only growing wilder as the betting pool grew larger.
(Though, no one has bet on Yu Shisan yet, he notes with no small amount of amusement).
“Chief, did you know about Qian-dage’s marriage?” Yuan Lu asked, tossing another pine nut into his mouth. The rooftop made for a good audience seat to the chaos that reigned below.
It was good to see Qian-dage getting all the love he deserved! Yuan Lu thinks.
Rarely did anyone express their appreciation for their Qian-dage, who actually did most of the work behind the scenes, such as making his medicine every week, for one.
“I…did not,” Chief Ning replies, his face strangely pinched. That was a new expression, Yuan Lu notes.
“Oh?” he teases, eyebrow raised, “there's something even the great Chief of the Six Realms does not know?”
“There are a lot of things I don't know,” Chief Ning counters, falling into their familiar song and dance, “matters of the heart are especially tricky.”
“There goes my chances at winning the betting pool,” Yuan Lu sighs wistfully.
“Betting pool?” Chief Ning asks, eyes narrowed, and-oh no, “You're fifteen! Why are you gambling?”
“I'm fifteen and I've been made commander anyway,” Yuan Lu counters, skipping off the roof with a cheeky wave.
Qian Zhao remains stubbornly tight-lipped about his spouse, which stretches it into a year-long betting pool.
(The betting pool remains strong even years after he gets transferred into the Palace's Yulin guards).
It turns into a tradition, a rite of passage for new recruits to bet on the identity of the legendary Qian-dage’s spouse).

A game I've been playing in early access for the past half year, Immortal Life, came out fully wednesday, and I love it so much and think that everyone should play it. Anyways I wrote a thing
Mu Xia hummed as she carefully placed the plate of dumplings in her basket. They were a new recipe, pork and chive, and she really hoped her shijie liked them.
Carefully balancing her basket on her arm, pushing aside the kitchen curtain with the ease of long practice, she nearly dropped everything when Ji Yaohua’s voice called out, “Mu-shimei! I was just speaking to your mother about importing things for the inn. She told me to ask you about anything you needed for the kitchen.”
Basket balanced once again, Mu Xia smiled. “Oh course, Ji-shijie, thank you. It will be our usual list, but could you see if you can get more of the chives? If these turn out, I think they’ll be a hit with the customers.”
Yaohua leaned in, curious. “What are they? They smell good.”
“Pork and chive dumplings! I have some extra in the back if you want, but these are for Shijie!” In this context, there could only be one Shijie. The farmer of the Misty Valley was the reason she was even a part of Guiyun Sect after all.
Li Mengqing appeared from around the corner, summoned by the call of a new food to try. “I’ll get them! Just on the serving table?” Not waiting for an answer, she slipped into the kitchen.
“What’s the occasion?” Yaohua’s eyes narrowed slightly. “If it’s her birthday you have to tell me. She refuses to say.”
That sounded like Shijie. “No, not at all. I just haven’t seen her in a few days, so I wanted to check on her and make sure she was eating well.”
A strange look crossed Yaohua’s face. It looked pained, but also glum and mischievous for some reason. “I see. I think she’ll enjoy those a lot. Say hi for me.”
“I will!” Ji Yaohua’s strange moods wouldn’t deter Mu Xia. “See you later Ji-shijie, Li-shimei!”
After Mu Xia was gone, Mengqing came out and passed Yaohua a dumpling. “Ji-shijie. If Shijie hasn’t been seen in a few days...”
“Yes.” Yaohua took a bite of the dumpling. It was very good indeed. She’d have to research where to obtain chive seeds. The Misty Valley could support nearly any kind of plant in its soil, so it was just a matter of sourcing. And having Shijie grow them would be much cheaper in the long run than importing chives. As for Mu Xia... “She’d have to find out sometime. Besides, if it’s been a few days, Shijie could probably use the food.”
“Hm. True.” Mengqing ate another dumpling. “Hey, do you think it’s possible to make a red bean dumpling?”
She’d never had a sweet dumpling before. “I’m sure you can convince Mu-shimei to try.”
The walk to the Misty Valley was pleasant. The weather was warm, and a bit breezy. There was rain on the horizon, but it wouldn’t hit until tonight. She spoke briefly to Zhou Qian’er about the day’s catch, and to Chen Yuanzhou about fishing her up a few puffer fish for an upcoming banquet.
The Misty Valley hummed with power as it always did. She could almost see the crops growing as they absorbed the spiritual energy, cycling it and sending it back into the earth, stronger. That was one of the things that had surprised her, after she’d started cultivating. Mu Xia had been to the Misty Valley before, usually on her way to the Sunset Forest to pick scarlet sage, but never before had she been able to see the energy she had always felt in the place. It had always felt alive to her, vibrant in ways that she hadn’t been able to comprehend. It was no wonder that Shijie was so strong, if this was where she lived, worked, cultivated.
Speaking of. “Shijie? Are you here?” She checked both fields, poked her head into the Blessed Land, knocked on the door of the freshly renovated house. But she was nowhere to be seen.
Then, suddenly, a flash of light. The same as the others when they teleported somewhere else. Mu Xia couldn’t wait to learn that technique. “Shijie, you’re home! I brought- ” She stopped short.
It... was Shijie. She could tell. But the usual flowing robes and perfectly styled hair were in horrible disarray, and covered in... substances. Mud was the least egregious of the substances, but Mu Xia could also see some sort of green-grey plant sap that smelled horrible, more green goop, and blood (?!) in various shades and consistencies. “Shijie?!”
Instead of asking for help or something, Shijie wobbled and mumbled, “whatimezit?”
“I...” Mu Xia checked the position of the sun. “Almost dusk.”
“Mmm,” Shijie nodded. “Worms.”
And she teetered off, in the direction of her silkworm hut. Mu Xia followed helplessly. As Shijie pulled a large bundle of mulberry leaves from her storage ring, Mu Xia asked, “Shijie, are you alright?”
Shijie nodded again. “Jss tired. Still got,” she paused, trying to visibly count up her remaining tasks.
That wouldn’t do at all! “No, you’ve got nothing to do until you’re cleaned up and rested!” Mu Xia spread the rest of the leaves over the worms, grabbing Shijie’s arm and pulling her towards the house.
Shijie pulled away before they could enter, detouring to the waterfall. To Mu Xia’s shock, she stood under it for a few minutes, allowing the water to wash away the substances. Then she stripped her clothes off, replacing them with a clean, dry set from her ring, while Mu Xia went “Eep!” and turned around.
Finally, Shijie sat down at her table, Mu Xia across from her. The waterfall had woken her up enough to speak in full sentences, so when Mu Xia set down the basket and opened the lid, her eyes lit up and she said, “Dumplings! Thank you Mu-shimei, I was starting to get hungry.”
“Aren’t you capable of inedia?” It wasn’t healthy, to survive on inedia for too long, but at the very least it prevented the feeling of hunger. Shijie didn't usually rely on it, but it was useful when she went to the secret realms and didn't want to fill up her storage rings with food.
Shijie made a noise of affirmation and swallowed her dumpling. “Yeah, but not for more than a few days. Maybe once I hit Core, but not yet.”
Mu Xia subtly pushed the plate closer. “What were you doing anyways?”
“I needed more golden disks. I used them all up learning spells, which means I don’t have enough for research and development, or to upgrade my axe.” Shijie ate another dumpling. Jin Li crept off of his nest and sniffed at one, then wrinkled his nose. “If I can do that, I can get past those ironwood tree roots that are blocking the path to the eastern forest, see if I can find out what’s in there. Maybe there’s a great treasure that we can use to rebuild the sect.” She looked critically at the half of a dumpling she was holding. “Do you think I can get seeds for chives? I’d like some more aromatics to work with, and these are good. Do you have the recipe?”
Mu Xia nodded. “I finished developing it today. If you liked them, I was going to introduce them to the inn menu.” Shijie had very good taste. If she liked something, odds were it would do well with many customers.
“The usual arrangement then.” Ingredients, to repay the time Mu Xia spent developing her recipe, and to thank her for her generosity. “Assuming I can get chive seeds in.”
“If you can, I’ll see about getting more recipes with them in.” Mu Xia fidgeted with her sleeve. “Shijie, is that. Is that how you usually look when you leave town for a few days?”
Shijie huffed, offended. “I wasn’t gone for a few days, I have to be back every day to feed the worms. They’re very important Mu-shimei.”
“Of course,” she said, conciliatory. “But why didn’t I see you yesterday then?”
A long moment of silence. Shijie was more awake, but still not to her usual calibre, it seemed, as it was taking her a minute to think that through. “Oh, I guess I did feed them at 3 in the morning yesterday. And the day before. And then it was straight back to the desert.”
“Shijie! How long has it been since you slept?” Another long pause, that Mu Xia didn’t let her finish. “Go to bed! Right now!”
“But I have to sweep the forest for flowers, and then I have to schedule some classes for tomorrow, and I need more krill so I have to fish some of those up tonight, and having more pearl dust is always useful and -”
“Go to bed!”
It took another few minutes of corralling her, but eventually Shijie was laying in her bed, Jin Li curled smugly on her chest, preventing her form moving. In just a few seconds, she was asleep.
Mu Xia breathed a sigh of relief. Then she got out her paper crane talisman. Shijie did so much for them. They could do a few things for her, at least for tonight.
#immortal Life#Mu Xia#Ji Yaohua#Li Mengqing#Did I intend the entire cast to be the girls? No#that's just kinda how it worked out when I was planning this out while walking six blocks in ten minutes to get to my next class#Based on various Elder Farmer discussions we've had on the discord#where Elder Farmer emerges from the mines after a week with a heart rending cry of 'MY WORMS!!!!'#or Elder Farmer mediates an argument between townspeople (because Elder Farmer is an Elder now and supposedly has the authority to do that)#and instead of offering advice just puts the two arguers to work on the potatoes#Elder Farmer is a Mess#is how most of us play I think#Terrible sleep schedule because there's no enforced bed time#staying in the realms for days on end#only emerging to Feed the Worms and harvest crops I guess#Chives sadly aren't available in game. Neither western chives nor Chinese chives (which these are supposed to be)#I guess green onions are but also. Not the same#there's also no garlic which I Suffer about daily#anyways play Immortal Life#it's a really cute farming game about rebuilding a cultivation sect after FIRE RAINS DOWN FROM THE SKY and destroys it#and there's an overarching plot of trying to find out why the fire rained down from the sky and destroyed the sect#and all the characters are so well written and unique and they all have strengths and flaws and they're so good and I love them all#Mu Xia got the spotlight here but I may do things with the others later#uh in case it wasn't clear don't be like Elder Farmer. Eat well. Sleep well. Don't forget to feed your worms.#Loxie's fics
