It’s been a busy morning and afternoon bringing these new 50 x 60cm oils to life. Inspired by the watercolours and the digital paintings (included) I’ve been enjoying a more expansive way of using to paint. Lots of large puddles of colour, lots of brush cleaning, hand cleaning a trying to create interesting marks and textures out of the paint. @helenboothartist The layering on this new piece of work is taking quite a long time. I’m using a very fine brush for the top layer, it’s time-consuming, but I really love the quality of the marks that I am making.⁠ ⁠ The black and white works underneath the painting are a series of 5 drawings in oil - which are also drying slowly. ⁠ ⁠ Not helped by this terrible damp weather!⁠ ⁠ The painting started with a darker ground, and the lighter layers get added one at a time- waiting for the oil to settle and skin over.⁠ ⁠ The way I paint reminds me of a passage from Winter by Ali Smith. This book was given to me for Christmas before my residency in Iceland and the Covid 19 pandemic. ⁠ ⁠ It seems poignant to share -⁠ ⁠ “There was this different quality to the light even only four days past the shortest day; the shift, the reversal, from the increase of darkness to increase of light, revealed that a coming back of light was at the heart of midwinter equally as much as the waning of light.”⁠ ⁠ I remembered this passage after listening to @thegreatwomenartists with @katy.hessel yesterday in my studio.
