It’s launch day! That means you can read Spirits and Sunflowers 🌻 today. This book — written by myself and @midnightprelude — tells the story of a grieving necromancer, a grumpy, protective single father, and the way they change each others’ lives for the better.
Spirits and Sunflowers is the first in the multipart series Maligned Magic. Each book explores a world where magic is real and tightly regulated by an organization called the International Arcane Order through the eyes of a different couple, each with their own personal struggles.
You can buy our debut novel on Amazon here. You can also read it for free on Kindle Unlimited. Reviews are welcome and encouraged, as this helps other people find us. Thank you for your support! 🏳️‍🌈
The amazing cover art was created by the one and only, immensely gifted @lethendralis-paints. The busts over the cover were the work of @kf1n3. Giant thanks to both incredible artists for bringing our boys to life.

Emily and Wendell Have No Chill...On Opposite Ends of the Chill Spectrum
Tumblr media
Ok, the more you put faerie and academia up next to each other, the more I see similarities between the two that both the academics and the fae would probably be extremely pissy about, from the strict hierarchical structures to the arbitrary rules and the extreme danger of falling in love with them. And yet I'm also EXTREMELY here for it. So let's talk Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands.
THERE ARE SPOILERS BELOW THE BREAK. BE WARNED.
Emily and Wendell are on the same page about when it is appropriate to go absolutely feral, but they would NOT agree with that. Emily can shake off the otherlands, random faerie assassins, and absolutely godawful living conditions during fieldwork but cannot handle other humans. Wendell can shake off *actively dying from faerie poison* and entirely too credible accusations of academic misconduct, but literally cannot handle a lack of coffee.
So naturally Wendell is panicking every time Emily gets too near the otherlands without him and Emily is absolutely losing it every time Wendell ignores common sense and uses his magic which exacerbates the effects of the poison. Literally these two are falling over each other to try to protect each other. It's wonderful--I wouldn't change a thing.
I also want to just double down on academics being JUST as terrifying as fae, because in the first book Emily didn't HESITATE before chopping a finger off to break an enchantment and in this one she didn't think twice before dropping the same poison that is killing Wendell into his stepmother's cup. This woman is absolutely terrifying in her determination and her ability to do the thing she has decided is absolutely necessary. Like, Emily Wilde is a terrifying force of nature and a damn fine scholar and the level of personal and professional jealousy I feel over this fictional character knows no bounds.
So beyond Emily and Wendell being just AGGRESSIVELY in love with each other in the most academic way possible, this book is fun because we get some resolution to the mystery of Danielle De Gray's disappearance, which was heavily referenced in the footnotes of the last book, and is one of the great dryadologist mysteries. I absolutely adore the fact that Emily is so determined to find out what actually happened to this academic in whom she sees herself. It makes her success so much greater and it makes the "don't meet your heroes" disappointment so much funnier when the real Dani catastrophically crashes into the De Gray that Emily had constructed in her head. It's funny and heartbreaking and honestly the fact that Dani then sort of...adopts Emily as a researcher in her own vein is awesome. Academic respect and mentorship is...a weirdass combination of doing it yourself with imagined mentor figures and deeply flawed people who just wanted to learn everything about something niche and specific and are really cranky about being saddled with students.
Which brings me nicely to Farris Rose. Rose is...a stodgy old white man academic in every sense, and he starts by threatening to have both Emily and Wendell fired for academic misconduct and fabricating research. He ends up with one ear on backwards and offering to mentor Emily in her academic career. He is also like...the absolute chaotic evil scholar, because he is VERY cool about ethical lapses if they get him on the expedition of the century. And he is also VERY comfortable lecturing Emily on her personal life. Even after she is pretty clear that his commentary is not terribly welcome.
The number of academic friendships that begin in open conflict is astounding, and honestly the "bitter enemy on the basis of their scholarship to grudging allies to actual friends" pipeline is VERY fun to watch. It's a special hell to live, but watching it is delightful.
Emily also grudgingly gets a student in this book! And after all the crap she gave Wendell about how he treats his grad students in the last book, she could possibly have been less brusque and less ornery with her dang niece!!! Ariadne is literally a ray of sunshine though, and she and Wendell get along like a house on fire to the point where he makes her a scarf for protection in the field. She and Emily uh...have a bit of a journey in terms of getting on, because Emily prefers to be on her own, and she like...intellectually loves her niece, but it takes some time for her to respect Ariadne as a baby researcher who is enthusiastic and learning. Their journey to understanding each other is really sweet, and I enjoyed it. I also love that Uncle Wendell was Uncle Wendell for Ariadne long before Aunt Emily actually accepted his proposal. That was just adorable.
I also really appreciate the cliffhanger that this book left us on. Emily and Wendell are going back to the Silva Lupi, but they literally do not know what they'll find. The assumption is that Wendell's stepmother is dead, but like...we don't KNOW that, and I wouldn't be surprised if she found some crafty and utterly hellscape-y way to avoid a terrible death by faerie poison. Especially since Wendell himself has hammered home the "there are no absolutes in faerie stories" message. So I might actually die waiting for book 3, but when it comes out, I will 1000% be there to read it.

“Hades catches my gaze in the mirror, and he holds my stare as he pulls the zipper up my back, his fingers lingering at the top of my neck for a few seconds before slowly pulling away.
I turn around to face him, and my chest brushes up against his because of how small the fitting room is.
“What do you think?” I whisper, my eyes still glued to his.
“You look breathtaking,” he tells me in earnest.
I begin to laugh, caught between embarrassed and bashful, and pull my gaze from his. But Hades grips my chin, forcing my eyes right back.
“You always look breathtaking.”

Excerpt from Some Days Are Diamonds
Chapter 6 pt 2
They made it almost to the parking lot before he threw her a curveball.
“I’m sorry, Elle.”
Frowning, Elle glanced up at him. “For what?”
Davy, with his sweet, boyish face, smiled at her. “You’re trying mighty hard, Elle, and I appreciate it, but when you think I’m not looking, you look awful sad. A little guilty, too.”
Shit. Shit. No. Elle scrambled for words, opening and closing her mouth like a fish while her face turned red hot. “That’s… it’s not—” But she really didn’t know what to say, because none of it was really true, anyway. She closed her mouth instead.
Davy took it in stride. “I figured asking you out was kind of a long shot, anyway. I was surprised you said yes.”
“You were?” Elle felt her brow furrow. “Why?”
It was Davy’s turn to shrug. “I figured you and John would have gotten together by now.”
That stopped Elle in her tracks. She dropped his hand as he kept walking. “Why do you say that?”
Davy turned back to face her and shrugged, his hands going into his pockets. “John’s had a thing for you for years. I figured he’d have asked you out by now.”
“John’s had—” What? Clearly, Elle was hearing things. “I…” she shook her head. “He… definitely doesn’t have a… a thing, or whatever. For me.” God, how horribly skewed that was. “I think he sees me as a kid sister, or something. An extension of Logan. Someone he feels responsible for.”
Davy snorted. “Elle, he’s been scowling at me all weekend.”
Well, Elle was the one scowling, now. “He’s barely even been there, why would he— oh, because he knows you’ve been kissing me?”
Davy’s expression was one of pity. “Elle.”
“No,” Elle said, “no. I— he’s just over protective. It’s definitely not romantic.” Davy still looked doubtful, and Elle sighed. “John’s… a really great friend. He has been for years. He’s had… so many chances to make a move, or… I don’t know, ask me out, or whatever.” She looked at her feet, studying the silky pink heels, the little bow above the open toe. “He never has, so.”
Chancing a glance up at Davy, Elle saw his kind eyes, a soft smile. He gave her a patient nod.

I’m in Love with Mothman by Paige Lavoie! 💕🖤
Super cute and easy read. City girl throwing herself into a small town and getting away from the world. Hot mothman that thinks she’s pretty.
Def recommend in general as a cozy romance but also as a palate cleanser after reading a disturbing splatterpunk horror book lol

...Someone Get Me Back on the Ice
Tumblr media
Ok, for a lot of reasons, I was never a competetive athlete. That said...I am Canadian and I was probably 3 or 4 years old when my grandparents bought me my first pair of skates and my parents took me to the (manmade) kiddie rink in the park to teach me to skate. My middle sister and I had skating lessons for a few years, our parents took us skating pretty often growing up, and when we moved into the big house in Alaska, we had a pond out back that we skated (and burned christmas trees--yes, it was always awesome) on every winter until I left the state. And even when I moved back to Canada, I brought my skates with me and still use the arenas and outdoor town square rink in the winter. All this to say that while I'm never going to be an Olympian, I deeply love skating, so when there was a cozy college skating romance between a figure skater and a hockey team captain...it was not a hard sell. And then I was absolutely delighted by this cozy, fluffy, very skate-y book. Let's talk Icebreaker.
CONTENT WARNING: I'm not going to cover much of this here, but if anyone wants to pick up this book, please be aware that it does contain disordered eating, a super controlling/abusive relationship, and a near-death experience, so take care of you when choosing your books!
The very last thing Anastasia Allen wants to do right before sectionals is be forced to share her rink with a hockey team. Then she gets adopted by a bunch of overgrown man-children with hearts of gold who enjoy body-slamming other overgrown man-children into the boards over a puck. It is possibly the most adorable thing I have ever seen, and it is the best possible embodiment of the healthy, non-toxic version of "boys will be boys" insofar as the team just genuinely love and support each other and make space for Anastasia and Lola in that world with care, respect, and joy. I love it so, so much.
Of course, Anastasia is not here just to be adopted by a hockey team. She's also very much in danger of falling deeply in love with Nate Hawkins, captain of said hockey team. Nate and Anastasia are a genuinely darling, adorable couple, and watching them together was just FUN.
Particularly in contrast to Anastasia's relationship with her skating partner, Aaron. Who is--to put it mildly--the biggest most manipulative toxic douchebag I have ever seen. There's something about his and Anastasia's relationship that managed to embody everything that can go horribly toxic with athletic partnerships and how difficult it can be when your dream relies on someone who is actively trying to drag you down.
The super nice thing though, is that Aaron is absolutely the bad guy in this book. Neither Nate nor Ryan (the adorable himbo basketball player she begins the book in a friends-with-benefits arrangement with) descend to Aaron's level. They are there to support Anaastasia. That doesn't mean they don't get angry or jealous--they're human men in their late teens/early 20s, of COURSE they get angry and jealous--but they deal with those emotions pretty freaking healthily, and they don't descend into petty ego-based bullshit. Add that to Anastasia's therapy-honed communication skills, and the relationships in this book are just so well done. Sometimes relationships in romances can get weirdly toxic for drama, but that's not the case here, which made this cozy romance GENUINELY delightful to read.
The side characters are also super well-developed and full of personality, so everyone in this book feels well-rounded, real, and delightful. From Lola to Henry, Robbie, Russ, and JJ, you get to know an ensemble of strong secondary characters in the context of the main romantic relationship, and Anastasia and Henry's platonic love for each other might be the best platonic relationship I've seen in FOREVER. I would 100% read a spinoff novel about those two buddy-ing around.
Author Hannah Grace is a self-proclaimed "fluffy comfort book writer," and if Icebreaker is any example, then ACCURATE. And I cannot recommend this book enough, it was a delight to read from start to finish.

We are thrilled to share the cover for the second book in The God's Gambit series! An urban fantasy romance retelling of Eurydice and Orpheus. This installment features two intersecting storylines with two couples, and the round family troupe that is so beloved!
Author: @savannahjamesauthor
Cover designer: @violet.book.design
Eurydice Martin is now dead, one of the many victims of Demeter's devastating storm. Her arrival in the Underworld should be as inconsequential as every other soul's, but she immediately catches the eye of Thanatos, the God of Death, whom she's had a deep infatuation with ever since their brief meeting when she was girl. But as the two grow closer, they learn that Eurydice is a unique soul in more ways than one, and perhaps she was always meant to come to the Underworld. Perhaps it was her destiny. There's only one problem; Orpheus, the husband she left behind and now has no memory of. Orpheus Martin is determined to get his wife back from the Underworld, no matter what sacrifices he has to make or what rules he must break. However, his plans are thrown for a loop by Charon, the Ferryman of the Underworld, who goes from an obstacle, to an unlikely ally, to a begrudging friend. There's only one problem; neither of them planned to catch feelings, and now Orpheus is questioning not just his mission, but his future with Eurydice.
All the while an elusive and dangerous God watches from the shadows, waiting for his chance to strike at the heart of the Underworld when its inhabitants are divided. For no one can hold a grudge like a God can, and there's no better puppet master than fear itself.
The Dance of Death is the second book in the Gods' Gambit series, following old and new characters in a story that will keep you on the edge of your seat and begging for more.

Excerpt from Your Hand In Mine
Here's the context for the Crimmis snippet lol
Chapter 1
She was back at it again today, of course. On top of the regularly scheduled chaos, she was disappointed— but not surprised— to see that most of the women on her team had converged into a clump and started toward the stage door. Their voices were just loud enough that she could pick out the words jerk, costume, and Beckett.
Gemma watched another dresser clip a mic pack into someone’s costume, and tried not to sigh. Of course it was Beckett. Recently, it had always been Beckett, every time, without fail. The man had a serious case of two-face syndrome. She was at a loss over it, too; she had no idea how a man could be so sweet and charming on the stage, and so completely socially inept off of it.
It was never what Beckett said that made her dressers practically riot, but how he said it. Low, demanding, just this side of irritated, and often the precursor to him barking out demands like an angry hound on a chain. If the conversation she’d just overheard was anything to go by, his demand today was to find some way to fix the texture of his costume.
Gemma rubbed her hands over her eyes. The texture. She was going to have a stroke. It wasn’t like they could magically guess how their laundry procedure would affect the cheap and terrible fabric used to make the Prince Sterling tunics. It was a wonder the things even held together to begin with, considering costuming’s heinously low budget. Gemma didn’t even know what this terrible, parchment-paper-colored fabric was called.
The texture. God.
They were already at five minutes to places. Sweet baby Joy, the youngest member of the team, looked like she was about to hand in her company ID. She was on the verge of tears. Beckett, on the other hand, looked about ready to punch his hand through a wall, or something equally dramatic. He was still in the company-issued Entertainment tee and sweatpants, clutching his tunic so tightly that it was definitely going to wrinkle.
At the sight of the whole situation, the only coherent thing Gemma could think was, Oh no.
Helping matters approximately not at all, Beckett was intimidating as all hell. The man looked like something out of a Gothic-era romance novel, all slicked back dark hair and pale skin, over six feet tall, and broad through the shoulders. He had a regal air to him that suited Merriment and Fantasy wonderfully, despite his semi-permanent look of displeasure.
Steeling herself for the emotional blast she was surely about to endure, Gemma tacked a smile on, and approached the far corner of the room.
