The Case of the Silverfish
The other day, a tea-cuppish storm was raised in my home. A silverfish had somehow managed to pull off a latter-day Houdini act by worming its silvery way into the narrow space between the glass plate and a print of one of J.W.Turner's seascapes.
Applying hand-pressure to the cardboard at the back of the picture would crush the tiny silvery 'art-eater' and leave a blot on my Turner print. At the same time, leaving it to its own nefarious antics would be like bestowing an OK nod to the little devil in silver at the cost of my Turner. A friend who was visiting me at that time, and who has an aversion to storms of the tea cup dimension, in all good intention, or so I made myself believe, suggested calling in those armies of expert art restorers who descended upon Florence when the city's art treasures were seriously damaged by unprecedented floods decades ago. But the suggestion, offered with such goodwill that there might peace on earth, had to be turned down. I feared that those art restorers, used only to museums, castles and palaces, might not know how to move about in my little old wooden house.
Finally, I resorted to my usual tactic for which I am famous. I did practically nothing. It was as usual, a wise step. The next morning, the silverfish was nowhere to be seen. Perhaps it went back to its usual haunts -- my dusty old books. But I didn't worry my over-sized head with the thought of the silverfish at my dear old books. I didn't see any reason why I shouldn't have the generosity to share my books with my squadrons of silverfish when I am sharing them with my fellow-beings who are even more voracious book-eaters -- they make my books disappear lock, stock and barrel, front cover, back cover and the pages in between. But of course when it comes to my collection of art prints, it's a different matter altogether.
I still am not sure what drove the silverfish to attempt to disfigure my Turner print. But I only hope that it wasn't prompted by such lofty or heavenly ideals which were behind most acts of vandalism on works of art in Western countries.
It seems people possessed by heavenly calls are not wanting in the West. The incident at the Royal Academy in London some decades ago, for instance. An artist threw a bottle of ink at Leonardo de Vinci's sketch of St.Anne. The work escaped serious damage as it was protected by a shield of plastic. The artist with the 'heavenly call' naturally had a water-tight reason for his act. He told newspapers that "damaging the precious picture was in some way connected with Jesus' mission on earth". And of course there was also that fellow who seriously damaged Michelangelo's "Pieta" with his war cry "I am Jesus Christ!". For good measure he even added that if he were killed, he would be going straight to heaven. He must have caused quite a stir in the Vatican.
Anyway, all that have actually nothing to do with me. I live so far away from those places. But I can't very well permit that sort of heavenly behaviour in the silverfish of my old wooden abode. They might damage my Turner print.
