Happy Solarpunk Aesthetic Week and Winter Solstice! ❄️

While we do celebrate here, we don't actually experience winter in my region, or any of the classic four seasons! The weather here is basically a coin toss between searing heat and torrential rain lol. So while I was musing over how to adapt a solarpunk aesthetic to a tropical lifestyle, I came up with this!

Lengthy explanations and chaotic ideas below:

Disclaimer: I am not a science-y person, so I'm not sure how any of these would technically work or what materials would go into making them. Hopefully one day someone could figure it out, but I'm just having fun sharing these ideas for now :)

What works well both in harsh sunlight and heavy downpours, plus is already something that people here use everyday? Umbrellas! How cool would it be to have an umbrella that absorbs sunlight during the day, and turns it into a personal spotlight at night? Or perhaps it could absorb and store large amounts of rainwater, to be re-used later or released somewhere more useful?

My main inspiration for this is the bamboo. This plant already plays a huge role in our lives here -- culturally, economically, and from what I recently learned, ecologically too! Our region suffers from floods often, and bamboo can help to control the flow of water, for example through their roots providing a barrier against soil erosion, or their ability to store large amounts of water and release it gradually during drier seasons. (And that's just one of the many reasons why bamboos are awesome and solarpunky!) I thought it would be cool to have water stored in the 'bamboo nodes' of the umbrella shaft, which could then be detached and used individually, or as components in other tech!

I chose the Amazonian lily pad as the canopy design because 1) it looks big enough to cover a person, 2) it has a wide surface for solar panels to 'photosynthesize' energy, 3) its container-like shape looks as though it could hold rainwater like a funnel while it trickles into the shaft, and 4) it just looks really pretty! Realistically, this canopy might not be able to do everything at once, so I'm hoping for this tech to be modular and highly customizable -- as in, you could replace this 'lily pad' with something else that serves a different function! I did play around with some other designs, here they are hehe

Hibiscus: Our national flower! Have these bad boys growing in my yard so I thought why not. Not sure what functions it would have yet... perhaps the pistil could be a sensor for gathering weather data? Or maybe the anthers are little lights? Maybe it attracts BEES???

Mushroom: Not familiar with the fungi in my area yet so I went with the classic Amanita. Though now I'm kinda regretting because! Wouldn't it be so cool and lunarpunky to design it based on a bio-luminescent mushroom, so it would make sense for the umbrella to glow in the dark? AGH missed opportunities ;;

Anyway while I was designing the umbrella I thought about giving the model a cool fit too, so tadaaa! A customizable pair of pants that can be worn as a shorts + half-skirt/sarong combo during hot weather, or extended to become a full pair of jeans during colder/rainy times! I used zippers as the connectors because they seem easy to sew on and I like the punky vibe it adds to the outfit. HOWEVER, I'm realising that might be inconvenient or way too time consuming for some people. Maybe buttons, magnets or hook-and-loop fasteners would be easier?

As for the shirt, idk that was just for fun. Maybe it changes colour/design based on the surrounding temperature?

KRTRIM AND ASALEE

KRTRIM ("krih-trim") comes from the Hindi word कृत्रिम, which translates to "artificial." It is the informal term for computational phantoms, and though it originated as an adjective in its native language, it is now commonly used as both that and a noun in English.

Krtrim are described as artificial intelligences, though this definition differs from the modern computer science term. Operating a GPU unit which controls their body ("vessel"), krtrim are electric entities of Base 2. Their Base number comes from the fact they exist in binary, or literal base two. OURO does not disclose how exactly krtrim are created, but it is commonly accepted that they are built upon fragmented human Essences.

Krtrim can pilot several different vessels depending on their age or occupation. These vessels include:

Class-1A civilian models stand at roughly four and a half feet tall (137cm), though their exact height depends on the age of the krtrim piloting it. These vessels are given to juvenile krtrim until they reach 20KR.

Class-1B civilian models stand at five feet tall (152cm) and are given to adult krtrim non-eligible for occupational advancements. This is the most common civilian vessel.

Class-1C is a discontinued civilian model used exclusively for jinkōs. They stood at roughly five-foot-three (160cm) and are slimmer than traditional civilian models.

If a krtrim is considered eligible for occupational advancements ("oc-ads"), they can be assigned a vessel with greater physical prowess, etc., i.e. a construction worker could receive strength oc-ads to make them better equipped for their job. These fall under the umbrella of Class-2.

Class-3 models are reserved for combat-oriented occupations. Most notable are Tangent-era soldiers such as Bheema, who stand as tall as six-foot-five (198cm) and have considerable oc-ads.

All krtrim models use un-dyed skin overlays. Due to the color of their coolant, this gives them their distinct blue complexion. In addition to this, krtrim lack a full-body skin overlay like aslee models; to keep their joints from pinching or catching on their clothes, they wear a body suit. This suit also helps them maintain a proper operating temperature and keeps their elastics from fatiguing. Additionally, since krtrim models only differ in faceplate design from individual to individual, a permanent color ID is assigned to them.

ASALEE ("us-lee") comes from the Hindi word असली, which translates to "real." It is the informal term for humans, and though it originated as an adjective in its native language, it is now commonly used as both that and a noun in English.

Asalee are Base 4 as a result of the four nucleotide pairs in human DNA. The vessels asalee operate can either be human (the body they were born with) or posthuman if they have undergone consciousness transfer.

Asalee posthumans pilot Class-1D OURO models, and are highly customizable according to either their previous human appearance or however the individual wants to present. This includes dyed skin overlays, height adjustment, cosmetic alterations, and more. These models can look convincingly human, aside from their reflective pupils.

I suggest trigger tagging after the 20th tag as tags after the 20th one dont show up on search (stupid I know) but still gets blocked okay

1: keep in mind the intersectionality

the mogai tumblr community has a lot of overlap with other communities, namely the disabled community, nonhuman community and plural community. respect them, and listen to them, for they are your allies. you will see the overlapping community get referred to as "LIOM" a lot (like in my username), it stands for labels, identities and other minorities and is meant to be an all encompassing umbrella.

2: make your posts accessible

as I just said, theres a lot of disabled people in this community, so its important to make your posts as accessible as possible. I will talk more on this later

3: dont be afraid to ask individual blogs

there is no subreddit posting system, and if you just post a general question you likely wont get any answers, if you get seen at all, so dont shy away from asking individual blogs about stuff, if their asks are open, it means they WANT you to talk with them and ask them stuff, so never view it as bothering them. the askbox doesnt always say "asks" and similar stuff though due to being customizable, so just know its the little button to the left of the follow button.

4: check pinned posts

pinned posts are posts that are pinned on top of a persons blog, when you open someones blog, theyll be the first post to be seen upon scrolling down. a lot of people use these to introduce themselves, set boundaries, give request rules, talk about availability, etc. so its important to read these through whenever possible.

1: image descriptions!!!

its basically where you describe the image, as the name suggests, tumblr has an alt. text function for it but it doesnt always work so little [boxes like this] right under the image is ideal for most, yes it makes it look less pretty, but is your aesthetic worth more than someone whos visually impaired not being able to understand the post? trust me no one cares if your posts are pretty or not. anyway, the ideal way to know how to describe an image is pretend youre explaining it out loud to someone across from you, who cant look at your screen for whatever reason.

2: plain text!

yes, tumblr has a lot of cool text features (like bold or italic, or even colored [PT: like bold, italic, or even colored. end PT]) but this is, again, unfortunately inaccessible, due to tumblr being a broken website it often doesnt register formatted text for screenreaders, plus it can be hard to navigate for people with disabilities even without a visual disability. this goes for fancy text and symbols as well (like stars emoticons or a cursive text font). so you have two options, offer a plain text alternative or dont format text at all. offering plain text can be done in the same way as image IDs (theres even an example above).

3: eyestrain

bright colors are awesome, trust me, Id know, but not everyone can view them properly without a migraine or even worse, a seizure. so its important to tag your posts with eyestrain if you decide to make a brightly colored flag, or even better, do your best to make the flag accessible instead, with slightly duller colors with more (or less depending on the flag) contrast. it doesnt make your flag as ugly as youd think, trust me ^^

4: availability cant do one or more of the things mentioned above for any reasons? dont fret! theres blogs out there that can help you, most of them do this out on their own accord.

Here's a list of some of the stuff i make

Sewing

I make custom dice bags, those are 12-16 depending on the fabric and any add-ons. (Example: mine is embroidered, another has pearls and buttons on it) embroidery can be done but will cost more.

Scrunchies/hair ties. Most of them are cotton, but i make velvet and silk ones. Cotton is 3, velvet and silk are 4. You get a dollar off if you buy 2.

Customizable stuffed animals. You can pick the color, pattern, whatever. on these dolls, and they are made to order. The animals i have are a large dinosaur, large dragon, turtle, rabbit, dragon, and elephant. ( i think thats everything.) These all come with the date it was completed on its paw, so you know how old your new friend is.

Bumblebees!! These are little 7$ plushies that can sit on your desk or sleep with you, each one has a unique patten on its wing. It also comes with the date it was completed, so you know how old your new friend is.

Custom humanoid dolls. This can be from a photo of you or a loved one. Or you can send me art of your character. These are incredibly complex, detailed dolls, and i will work closely with you to make the doll. It's a long process that takes me several hours. As a result, these are at least $200. I only take one or two commissions for these a month at the moment.

I can take other commissions but we will have to discuss that.

Stickers

Potions. Each potion is completely unique. Each painted by me using India Inks. These paper stickers are in 3 different sizes. Small is 3, medium is 4, and large is 5. You can tell me what color you want, and if its not available in the size you want, i can likely make it.

Holographic spider's hat shop. This is a large vinyl Holographic sticker of a jumping spider wearing a water droplet hat, selling other tiny things for others to wear as hats. This sticker is $4. If i have any in may, there's mini paper ones for $2

Milkshake pride stickers. These are paper stickers meant to be semi-subtle pride flags. I have the following flags, and can add more. Lesbian, omni, bi, ace and aro, demisexual, demiromantic, pan, rainbow, nonbinary, trans, and intersex. These are $2 each. I also have a tiny sticker set of all of them for the same price.

Fairy. This fairy sticker is a paper sticker of a fairy holding a mushroom as an umbrella. It is $2

Frog with a tophat. This is a paper sticker of a cute little frog with a tophat. He's rather dapper. $2

Fox leaping. This is a paper sticker of a red fox. It is also $2

Red mushroom this paper sticker will not be remade, i have a few left. It's a cartoony red mushroom in some grass. It's $1.50

It is probably worth mentioning that i have a BFA, so that does affect my pricing slightly (on my illustrative work)

Woa what kinda power chair are u gettin??? And if you're comfortable will you share pictures?

Yeah! I think it's a permobil m3 corpus! I know it'll have tilt and reach/elevation with the seating, meaning it'll raise and up to a foot and I can tilt the seat back and forward to change where my weight is distributed. Its kind of a specialty powerchair, meant for people with things like ALS, advanced MS, high level paralysis, and muscular dystrophy. (I qualify due to being under the dystrophy umbrella. Also a vent qualifies you.)

I tried to keep from needing one as long as possible because they're heavy and bulky and can go less places than a manual, but I can't really sit up that long in my manual chair and I can't really go from wheelchair to other seating and back anymore so we decided it was time. Hopefully it'll be the last wheelchair frame I need, it's super customizable and we can add other power features like recline or alternative drive controls as I need them in the future. I THINK I might even be able to charge my ventilator on it in a pinch.

hi I followed you recently, saw your post about how LGBT terminology shouldn't be losing it's meaning.

I don't have any big beefy intellectual arguments about this, just personal experience and observation.

As someone whose lived experiences have been very much shaped by certain aspects of who I am, having precise language to describe those experiences is important to me. I see this language appropriation happening in more spaces than just LGBT (mental health is the first that comes to mind).

The word "trans" is a great example... I am starting to feel almost a sort of disconnect with the term trans/transgender - which frustrates me, but it's happening anyway. Because like... you go into "trans spaces" and most people in them now are not living a transsexual experience. People have told me I'm a terrible person for saying that hormone therapy is not something to "play with" in response to someone spreading the idea that you can "microdose" T to get specific changes and not others... like I'm sorry, no, your sexual characteristics are not fun, customizable traits in a video game character creation. Health issues related to hormones are very, very common whether you are trans or not. I have chronic health issues and I have had to take transition very seriously and carefully. Like... no, I don't want there to be an "us" vs "them" mentality but it's almost like they did it for us. They started ostracizing trans people in trans spaces. Those who didn't conform got labeled transmeds and whatever else. Clearly they don't see themselves as trans as in transsexual (and made that a dirty word) but take over our spaces, spread misinformation about medical treatment we need...

Re: the word gay... I mean yeah I've seen people literally say "no gay is an umbrella term! everyone who is queer is gay! anyone can use it!" I mean... idk how do you think that make gay men feel you guys? to take the ONE word they have to describe THEIR experience and dilute it?

I have seen older lesbians (like, in their 60s) who are uncomfortable with the word lesbian, so prefer to call themselves gay... I don't know if there is maybe a historical reason/trauma attached to that.

then, you know, the "queer community" was like "well now queer is the umbrella term!" but it's also a bunch of different identities...

it took be a long time to be okay with calling myself bisexual because of these, what I consider, regressive behaviors in the "community" that I was sort of... idk. I feel like I was indoctrinated as a young person. I never wanted to call myself queer. I was called that when someone tried to kill me in a hate crime. I don't need to reclaim it. It doesn't describe anything about me. I'm not queer. I'm bisexual. I'm transsexual. That's it.

Now this is the type of discussion I love. I don't know if I'm supposed to post this or not, I usually just post the stuff I receive, so here it is anywaysss

I also see the appropriation you're talking about, mental health mixed in there too. It's very entitled, especially considering the positions they take as "inclusionary".

I don't want to add that much to your thing, since there's nothing more than really needs to be said, (and I don't want to take away the attention from you), although I did have a related confusion because of this type of stuff. I'm sure I've said it on here before, but when I was still questioning, I hopped from sexuality to sexuality, settling on "omnisexuality" for the longest time (I got really swept up in the different types of sexualities and all that, which is why looking it up online is probably even worse now), until the mere fact that omnisexuality didn't have an article on Wikipedia led me down the path to just letting myself be bisexual.

I honestly don't know how younger LGBT people can just erase the history and labels of their own community and then wonder why so many people who have been there longer than they have are basically just "opting out" of the community in its entirety. It feels poisoned by identity politics too, this whole "make 'gay' the new 'queer'" type of thing. Either way, I'll leave it there, I'm grateful for the follow, and it's kind of like a mystery. Like who could the anonymous follower of mine be 👀
