Tumblr media
Dabi shuts the front door of the apartment you two share with an unusual gentleness, dangling a large bag of take-out in one hand and the keys for the myriad of locks he’s installed in the other. He normally likes to make a show of coming home--keys jangling, door slamming, anything to get you riled up and tense and reacting. But since you’ve fallen so deep into your… funk, as he calls it, he’s been strangely quiet. Truth be told, he’s afraid that his usual loud noises and intense demeanor might shock you into some further place inside you, making you infinitely harder to reach.
So it’s with this careful quiet that he enters your bedroom, noting with a frown that you’re in practically the same position as when he left. Curled up on your mattress, holding a small, ratty pillow to your chest. You turned over at some point--that’s something, at least.
“Hey,” he says, casually--with more practiced effort, it must be said. He tried being his usual snarky self with you at first, thinking you were being stubborn and pouty when you refused to get out of bed or even respond to him. But even nasty threats hadn’t coerced you to react more than glancing at him, eyes unusually dull. A healing burn on your arm, a last ditch-attempt on his part, was testament to just how deep you’d fallen in.
In any case, you don’t respond.
He sets the takeout bag down on the foldout table he’d found near a dumpster and promptly co-opted for his place, and begins pulling out the containers. The smell of the array of takeout boxes, filled with freshly steamed vegetables, fish, curry and an array of dishes he knows you like fills the otherwise stale smelling room.
He glances over at you as he starts popping open the staples on the boxes, but if you’ve noticed the impressive takeout spread he’s started to lay out, you don’t give any signs. His eyes roam over your prone form and he feels a twinge of anxiety beginning to bubble. You hadn’t been eating much, sometimes not at all, for a few weeks now. Lately you refused to even feed yourself, and he had to resort to offering you bites, which you would--only sometimes--nibble.
You would compliantly drink water if he held the glass to your lips, and sometimes he overheard you sipping it from the sink in the bathroom; but any attempts to make you eat more than a bite or two had ended in messy spills, wasted food, and your sobs. You’ve lost weight, and the dark circles under your eyes are showing more as each day passes. The burn on your arm is healing more slowly than it should, much slower than the other burns and scratches and bruises you’d received since he brought you home.
“I picked up some of your favorite things at that place you used to go to all the time,” he says, taking the time to keep his tone pleasant. “I even paid for it--if you can believe that.” He glances over again--you haven’t moved a muscle.
“I got some desserts too.” He pauses. “You can eat them first, if you want. Or should I stick them in the fridge?” Maybe a question will get you to respond, he thinks.
When he glances over next, you’re looking at him, but any relief he feels is short lived. Your eyes have a sad, glazed over look that he’s come to know all too well over the past few weeks. He tries to pay it no mind as he dumps a bit of of each thing on a plate, before setting your tray carefully down on the floor next to the mattress.
“We can freeze what you don’t eat. This should last us a while, huh?” His voice trails off at the end. Your eyes are--you barely look like you’re even there. Finally, something inside him seems to snap and he takes a few staggering steps towards the door.
“I’m… a real piece of shit.” He looks back at you and smiles, a sad, unusual smile that he’s never shown you before. “I fucked up real good, didn’t I? I can’t believe I--” He doesn’t finish.
He suddenly leaves the room, but he doesn’t make it far past the threshold before he collapses on his knees. He begins to cry, an unusual, soft piercing sound that carries easily through the open doorway to your shared room.
He doesn’t see you shift on the mattress, pulling yourself into a sitting position as you learn forward to look at him. But he does finally feel your gaze and glances over, noting that you’re looking at him not with the lifeless expression you’ve been wearing for days but with a dulled version of… pity? Sympathy? He doesn’t know, but the thought lasts only a moment because the next thing he sees is you lifting the pair of chopsticks he left near the plate. Your hand is shaking slightly as you take up a piece of fish and bring it to your mouth. He’s entranced as you take a small bite.
He wants to run through the doorway and shove the rest of the food in your mouth. Eat, damn it, eat! But he knows that would be monumentally stupid. Instead he slowly gets up from his crouched position and quietly makes his way back into the bedroom. He sits down near the doorway. He doesn’t want to break whatever spell is simmering between you. He watches you pick up another small bite, some plain rice, and eat that, too.
He scoots closer to you and, seeing that you don’t show any sign that his presence is disturbing you, continues until he’s close enough to touch you. You seemingly ignore him as you set down the chopsticks and takes a small, gentle nibble of a sweet pastry. Dessert.
He places his scarred hand on top of yours and finally, you do look up at him. The sight of something--pity, sympathy, sadness--in your eyes causes Dabi to let out a shuddering breath. It’s a beautiful sight.
He strokes the top of your hand gently.  “That’s so good, (Y/N). You’re doing so good. I’m so proud.”
The praise seems to make you tremble, and he sees you wipe away a tear before you take another bite of the sticky pastry.
It’s just a bite, a bite or two. But it’s a start.

Shatter Me
Tumblr media
Here's the snippet! This paring is a Takami Keigo x OC
Aaaaaaaangst and betrayal. Kinda based on a daydream I had with an OC I made for him.
×-×-×-×
Soft pants and feathery light footsteps barely bounced through dark and empty alleyways as Shiori chased after the tall man in a dark bodysuit. She could tell he was arguing with himself but she wasn't too close to hear what he was saying. Had they noticed her? Of course not, they were too busy making haste to their evil lair.
Her brain kept rattling back and forth as if fighting with itself on if she should have been doing this. Chasing after a LoV member? She was nuts. But this opportunity didn't come often and she had her provisional license. As soon as she found their hideout, she would be out of there faster than Hawks.
Her heart did several somersaults thinking about the older man. Once she was sworn in as an official hero, she would confess to him. She kept telling herself that over and over. Shiori knew it was just a childhood crush, but after spending so much time with him during her childhood and hero work studies, she couldn't help it.
The blonde had a devilish way with words and she recalled just how many times he had promised he'd always be there for her, even if it was just him trying to give her hope to cling onto so she didn't give up on her goal to become a hero. She had no idea what was going on in his head, since his words never matched his expressions. But she wanted to believe in him and always did.
Imagery of when he had caught her after she decided to teeter off the edge of a hospital roof flashed through her mind.
"Oi, I know life doesn't always give ya want you want, so you gotta to take it. But that doesn't mean literally take your life. Ya got so much left kid, don't waste it."
The the first words he ever said to her after he had swooped in and saved her, gently placing her back onto the cold concrete of the rooftop she'd fallen from. He happened to be at the right place at the right time.
She remembered all those long talks he had with her, constantly visiting her when he had time, bringing her sweets, and being a shoulder to cry on as she battled her disease. She couldn't remember when her heart started beating for him, but it certainly was somewhere around that time.
She remembered how he congratulated her on getting into Yuuei Academy and welcomed her with open arms into his Agency for hero study. It was silly to have fallen in love with a pro hero at her age. Absolutely silly. But that didn't stop her one bit.
'I hope he'll be proud of me!' She thought to herself as she continued her pursuit of the man that was known as Twice. His file had said his real name was Jin Bubaigawara.
'Jin.. where have I heard that name before?' Shiori did her best at tracking through her brain but couldn't recall. Shaking her head to clear her thoughts, she realized she was almost caught up to him, seeing as he had slowed down a bit. Slowing down herself, she crept in his shadows until they came across an undisclosed building.
"Wow, if this isn't the most cliche shit I've ever seen." She murmured to herself before clamping her hand over her mouth. Now was not the time to be getting caught.
After watching Twice glance back and forth before walking through the front door, she made her advance towards the building that seemed as though no one was there but immediately halted in fear and confusion.
A blur of red and gold swept through the front door before it was closed.
"Hawks.....-san?"
Shiori was absolutely sure it was him. Was he there launching an attack? But not by himself right? Panic swelled up in her chest as she ran towards the building to be his backup. She was about to bust in when her hyper sensitive ears picked up the fainted sound of laughing.
Peering through the windows, but being extra sure to be careful because Hawks had taught her the art of stealth, she could see her mentor and his expressive hands waving about. Was he...having a conversation with Twice? Maybe negotiating? But heroes only made negotiations when a hostage was involved.
Even more panic filled her as she looked around the building to devise some sort of plan. Behind the building, a window was left unlocked. Making quick work of silently sliding it open before slipping in, she made her way to the room where Hawks's velvety voice bounced from. His training paid off because not even he noticed her yet. Or maybe he had and was waiting for her to assist. All she knew was that she wanted to help him.
"...aintaining my image as a hero, you know?"
His voice was becoming clearer as she made her way to the other side of the building, slipping her way to a small room connecting her, and the room that they were in. Maintaining his image as a hero? She wasn't sure when he started calling it an image but she kept focus to listen to him speaking.
"All you can do is wait for Dabi's orders. Orders? Like that flaming demon will actually do anything about it." That was the sound of Twice. Shiori remembered he suffered from split personalities.
Her ears listened to pick up the sound of a third heartbeat but there were none. Just Twice and Hawks. It was odd. Hawks should know that Twice was a villain, so how could he be so casual with him right now? And what did they mean about orders?
"Well, I'm patient. I can wait. I know he doesn't trust me yet, that's why he won't let me see their leader. Once I prove myself a honest member right?" Hawks chimed.
No...nonono. Shiori was absolutely mistaken. A hand reached up to clutch her chest as it began rising and falling rapidly. This was some joke right? One big terrible ugly joke. This wasn't Hawks. This had to be some elaborate lie. She didn't get much time to finish panicking when blue flames came out of seemingly nowhere and forced her through the door she'd been eavesdropping through.
Her body landed and bounced a few times before hitting the wall across the room. She'd flown right between Hawks and Twice. The sudden blue of a person whizzing past the two males gave them little time to react appropriately.
A tall and slender young man with dark hair and horribly scarred skin stepped through the singed doorway, an irritating scowl upon his face. "Hawks, you brought your lackey?"
"My lackey?" The blonde glanced over to the shall frame pulling herself up off the ground, drywall and wood falling from her back and out of her long light pink hair. Panic struck his heart like a chord but his face remained unchanged. "I guess I taught her a little bit too much of my skills. I didn't even know she was tracking me."
"I-I was tracking Twice." She coughed, struggling to upright herself.
The dark haired man, Shiori recognized as Dabi scowled at Twice before hitting him with his flames. Twice danced and screamed, along with letting out a slew of profanities about burning his mask. "You let a little girl follow you? And you..." his glare was right back on Hawks, his voice laced with calm rage, "didn't hear her sneak her way in here?"
Hawks's only response was to shrug nonchalantly as Shiori watched their exchanges with fear in her eyes. "What is a kid going to be able to do? We'll just find another meeting place."
"And how are you going to handle the fact that a hero saw you with us? Do you even know how much she heard? No, you don't. So what are you going to do about it?"
Hawks sighed, getting Dabi's implication. "Yeah yeah, I get it. You don't want witnesses yeah?" The blonde male reached to pull out a long red feather from his left wing. Shiori's eyes widened when she realized it was one of the ones he used as swords. Her head would be lobbed off in a second if he wanted it. But Hawks cared for her, she was sure of it. Right?
He made his way over to her and she locked eyes with him, hoping that this was all a joke, and that there was no way he would do such a thing. She was only met with a deadpan stare, as if he was looking through her. Her legs went out as she slumped to the ground. "H-Hawks-san..."
His expression didn't even change as he watched her breath hitch and her light magenta eyes filled with tears and over flowed. This couldn't be her Hawks. The same man who laughed with her, comforted her, told her to live. The same man was now about to take her life. She was too shocked to move or fight as she sat there crying.
Standing over her, he raised his crimson feathered blade. "Nothing personal kid, no witnesses."
Shiori smiled at the man, knowing that there was honest goodness in him. Knowing that there was no possible way he could want to do this of his own volition. His eyes were cold but she could tell. She smiled up at the first, and last, man she would ever love. As the blade came down, she spoke her last words through hot blurry tears, her voice soft and low for only him to hear, "I love you, Takami-sama."

Someone adopt Todoroki already
Tumblr media
Let's talk about everyone's favourite BnHA prince, Todoroki Shouto, and his parental figures. This kid is some weird cross between Haikyuu's Kageyama and the Last Airbender's Zuko, in that he's a socially awkward pretty boy with a dark past and some very serious daddy issues. This kid has seen some shit, my dudes. And like those two he gets a rather satisfying, still ongoing character arc, making him one of those characters you can’t help but root for. You know what else Todoroki is? A walking symbolism manual.
 Todoroki's parental figures
So BnHA is very interesting in the way it deals with parents. As opposed to most manga, they don't just all die or disappear into the background here. This series has some of the warmest mother-son relationships (hello Midoriya Inko), and it's also chock full of father figures (Dad Might, Dadzawa, Dad Torino). People like Midoriya and Bakugou, and Kirishima in the manga, get several of these mentors to help them on their way.
Todoroki, on the other hand, gets surprisingly few. He doesn't have the same relationship with Aizawa or All Might that Midoriya and Bakugou have, and he doesn't even get a separate mentor during his  apprenticeship, because he chooses to spend that time with his own father. In a way, this makes a lot of sense. Whereas Midoriya gets outside guidance to grow, Todoroki's character development is very much an internal struggle. It is central to Todoroki's character arc that he learns how to deal with the parents he already has.
Putting this under a cut because it’s super long, and it ventures a little into manga territory (i tried to keep the spoilers mild).
 Fire and Ice
Tumblr media
I don't think I'm going to shock people when I mention that Endeavour, Todoroki Senior, is a bit of a dick. The man has many flaws as a father and a human being. He's abusive, for one. He is shown as proud, calculated, ruthless, selfish. He wants to mould his child with the very specific purpose of defeating his own greatest rival and he's willing to disregard the lives and feelings of others (like his wife) to make this happen. Now what may shock you is that honestly, I don't believe Endeavour is a purposely cruel person. You can't really save that many people if you're a full sadist. He appears to actually want a relationship with his son, or at the very least, he wants his son to look up to him. He doesn't seem to understand that holy shit, bro, you frigging traumatised that boy.
Tumblr media
I feel that the way he's treated his kid, and his wife, is mostly him having a one track mind and going overboard. I'm not trying to redeem him here, but there are levels of evil and Endeavour for me falls into the 'drunk in a wife-beater' category. Putting aside the question of whether Dabi is also a Todoroki sibling, it does seem like not all his kids hate him, for instance. Shouto's sister Fuyumi seems pretty ok living in that house still. As a school teacher, she is an adult woman with an income who could be living alone. The fact that she stays in that house could mean she's there to take care of her younger siblings, or that she at least has a casual enough relationship with her (rich AF) dad that staying is preferable to making it on her own. Honestly, he probably just lowkey ignored his other kids for most of their childhood, or at least let them have a normal life. As such, it's mostly just Todoroki's bad luck that he was born as a 'perfect sample'. Endeavour strikes me as someone who is very full of himself and it causes him to look at other human beings as a means to an end.
Tumblr media
On the other side of the scale is Mrs. Todoroki. Like Izuku's mother, she is framed first and foremost as someone who loves, someone who cares, someone selfless. But unlike Inko, her selflessness is pushed to a point where she can't take it anymore.  This is a woman who has lost any and all agency. She is trapped in a loveless marriage she did not want and she doesn't even seem to have a name of her own. She is just 'Mrs. Todoroki', a plaything to be used and disposed of by a powerful man. The pain and fear she absorbs during the years is too great and she snaps, hurting the ones she loves the most. She is then quickly carted off and locked away somewhere out of view.
 Appearances
So how has this whole business shaped Todoroki? For one: he doesn't give a damn about appearances. BnHA is very big on the difference between what you look like, and what you are. For a blatant example, check out the 'two forms' of All Might. Appearances are important for a hero, but Todoroki knows that this could be bullshit. Endeavour is the 'number two' hero. He is looked up to as a great and powerful man by the general populace, but it seems to be a bit of an open secret (judging by Present Mic's reaction at the Sports Festival) that he's a grade A jerk. On the other hand 'Mrs Todoroki' is known as a violent woman. Someone crazy. Someone dangerous. Someone that has to be hidden away in a hospital, never to see the light of day. In both these cases Todoroki knows better. He doesn't particularly look at the outside. He doesn't even judge people on what they say, but on what they do.
Tumblr media
On a much more symbolic level, this is even the case for the whole 'element' business.  I personally love how the reality of Todo's fire and ice, and of his parents elements, doesn't correspond to their official 'element'. Fire is supposed to be warm. The 'hearth' is the traditional centre of the family, whereas ice evokes the cold, lonely wilderness. But when it comes to parental love, Todoroki's mom's is the warm one. Her loves is even so hot that it when it goes out of control, it literally burns his skin. On the other hand, his father's love is a cold one. To his father, Todoroki is a product, a pawn in the race for Number One. It is an attitude that causes Todoroki to reject any sentimental ties he has to his father, almost literally turning the boy into a block of ice, since that's the only skill he's willing to use.
Walking. Symbolism. Manual.
 Dual personality
But as the manga mentions, Todoroki is the perfect genetic mix of both his parents, whether he wants it or not. He is the 'half and half bastard' and step one in his development is actually becoming that. When we first meet Todoroki, he has a cold personality and he quite literally only uses ice, in apparent defiance of his father. This is his Ice Side. It is calculated, it is sharp, it is dismissive of others and it is ambitious. This is the kid that wants to win the tournament on half strength. It is the kid that challenges Midoriya as an 'opponent-to-beat'. It is, against all rebellious tendencies, the personality of his father.
Now let's look at his Fire Side. Remember when we first saw that? It's not the moment you're thinking of. It's this one
Tumblr media
Todoroki's fire side is passion, it is anger, it is explosive and full of feelings. It is the side that cares, and cares so much that sometimes it explodes and threatens to hurt people (like poor Sero). Oddly enough, Todoroki's Fire Side comes much closer to his mother's personality.
Don’t believe me?
Tumblr media
Todoroki's mom with a whistling kettle in the background.
Tumblr media
Todoroki right before he freezes the hell out of Sero.
 Achievement: Fire
Enter Midoriya, our superhero with an extra in 'unlocking character development'. What our boy does, in the tournament, is set Todoroki's fire side free from several years of suppression, obviously. He does this by making him forget about his father and get more in touch with his mother.
Tumblr media
For just that moment, Todoroki switched sides, willingly.
And you see that from then on, he starts to flip between both sides more regularly. In his fight with Bakugou he's still sputtering, but honestly, boy just had a revelation, you can't expect him to be up to speed that fast. But you do see it more often later on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We see Todoroki slowly warm up to his classmates, particularly to Iida and Midoriya. We see him start to visit his mother, because he's quite literally nurturing that side of him.You see him give very sensitive advice and lose his cool (heh) another time, like in the superhero exam. We see him remain his calm and calculated self all through that Bakugou rescue mission.
Back to dad
An interesting point in the story here, is the apprenticeship. Todoroki chooses to go to his father here. This is a calculated decision and he even mentions that in the anime. His father is a popular hero and it gives him good opportunities to work with the 'number two', despite whatever his feelings for this man may be. That's his ice side speaking (his father's side, if you follow my theory).
Now look what happens when Midoriya needs help.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Instant dismissal.
Todoroki knows what he cares about, and it is the continued well-being of Midoriya. The switch is almost instantly flipped. Forget his father, go save his friend. His mother's side is slowly but surely gaining.
 Balance
Right now, you see a lot of duality in everything Todoroki does. This boy, despite unlocking both sides of himself, is still very much struggling. He can still come across as aloof in unfortunate situations. And let's not forget that his explosive side is just that. Explosive. If he doesn't learn to reign that in, he, too, could cause hurt to others. What Todoroki needs, more than anything, is to balance these sides of himself.  The right brain and the left brain. Hot and cold, doing and feeling, Ice and Fire. Right now, he's almost split himself in half, showing one side now and another side the next. I'm not sure if all that switching is altogether healthy, but at least it's better than what he did before when he was literally suppressing entire parts of himself. It's progress. I'm hoping that he'll get past this stage also. It's slow going, but honestly? I get that. Kid's seen some shit.
PS: I have a bunch of these BnHA meta things.
