i. mila ramirez hyde ( ages 14-17 ) ; 4'11
mila is daughter and step daughter of benjamin and katherine hyde. in a settled agreement at birth, benjamin was given full custody of mila to assure the best future for herself since her birth mother ( camila lucía ramirez ) just couldn't provide the necessary requirements ( her mother was also an active prostitute till she tragically died during a job when mila was the age of ten ) . she despises her step mother and detests her father. she can't stand church and is the complete opposite of the hyde family name. she dresses down ( not like a regal ), she cusses ( manners aren't her thing ), and she certainly doesn't trust god ( her ideology of god is shaped solely off of her father's teachings, so it's extremely warped and also tampered with from dante's possessions ).
she's very sensitive to affection, being that she lacked any sort growing up, but does still have some sort of soft center to her enraged pain. because overall, she just wants a father who truly cares for her and a mother who isn't katherine. but, most of her days are filled with bizarre uncomfortable cult like rituals posed as purifications for the psychiatric redemption center or providing false claims of how wonderful her father is to make him happy. because if he's happy? he leaves her alone. and she rather peace than bullshit. meet miss mila hyde everyone.
IMPORTANT NOTE: mila is hispanic/american, hispanic from her mother's side and ramirez was mila's grandfather's last name which was one of the main requests for mila to have for some sort of connection to her hispanic heritage, one mila does look to in secret. ( additional info below on her relationship with her birth mother before her death )
as camila was in a dangerous world, her communication with mila was scarce, but extremely important to the both of them. she didn't hide what she did, but she also didn't try to bring mila in it as well. letters, little gifts, photos, visits ( when she could ) were all but a few things of the long list camila did to be the best mother she could in the ways she knew how. each phone call ended with a prayer in spanish to "their god" ( as mila puts it ) and does so each night to herself ( sometimes repeats it when she's really missing her mother ). she also keeps around her wrist a hand knitted bracelet her mother made for her. one she never plans to take off.

Maria y Los Muertos-- a Día de Los Muertos short story.
It's pretty mild in tone, but please know the subject matter deals with a child who has died.
Maria José Ramirez had never been dead before. Not for Dia de los Muertos.
She had always thought the Land of the Dead would be dark, and lonely. She found, on the contrary, that it was actually colorful and full of life— music in its pulse.
Tonight, however, she walked away from that world. For it was the one night a year the veil was thin enough to visit her family.
Dia de los Muertos.
As she walked along the petalled path, Maria’s heart seemed to pound with longing, even though it no longer beat. Ever since she had died last winter, she had waited for this day, patiently counted the moments before she could be reunited and see her mamá and papá, her little brothers Juan and Carlos. Even Dante, the family dog.
She missed them more than she had thought possible, as though the she could reach out and grasp the feeling in the air.
As a child, her soul had crossed over at midnight November 1… Dia de los Angelitos. All she had to do was walk along the path her family had laid out for her. Yet, María found herself nervous to take another step.
How would her parents feel about seeing her… how would her brothers react?
María had to remind herself they only had one day. One day, and then an entire other year of waiting for this opportunity.
So she took another step, the petals crunching beneath her feet.
Crunch. Crunch.
Step by shaking step, María emerged out of the darkness and was met with a blinding light. Still, she pressed onward.
Crunch. Crunch.
When she emerged from the light, María was greeted with the front of her house… her casita. She smiled at how familiar it looked— the same yellow stone, and archways markings he trance. The trimming around the front door remained chipped and in need of repainting, as it had when she had dwelled amongst the living.
The familiarity was both a comfort and a burden, to know so much had changed, and yet so little. With a deep breath, María walked along the path which lead through the front door, and into the foyer.
Where she was greeted with the most beautiful ofrenda she had ever seen.
“Oh, magnífica,” she whispered.
At the center of the ofrenda was a photograph— a picture of her that mama had taken not long before she got sick. Besides that were mountains of sugar skulls, some of them carved with her name, her favorite childhood toys and scarf, water, and pan de muerto. Decorating the ofrenda was brightly colored papel picado and fiery orange flor de muerto— the same flowers who’s petals had been used to guide her way.
It was heavenly. It was perfect. Quickly, María rushed forward— careful not to knock over any of the candles— took a sip of water from glass which had been left for her, and bit into a loaf of pan de muerto. The sugary sweetness rested on her tongue— a taste she had not experienced in months.
Just then, a faint, tender voice rang out from behind her.
“Hermana?”
María nearly dropped the bread, as she turned around to see her little brother Juan standing in the doorway.
“Juanito!” She cried out, putting the bread back onto the ofrenda and running to greet him.
Little Juan was only five years old, and didn’t seem to have changed one bit in the ten months that had passed. His smile contained all of its past vibrancy, his head of dark curls the same bounce.
“Mamá, papá, Carlos— María is here! She found our offerings!” Juan called out.
A moment later, her parents came running through the front door. Both stopped in their tracks and raised their hands to their mouths when they saw María. Mamá had baby Carlos on her hip.
“Oh, mi hijita” her mother cried.
Had she been able to cry, María would have in turn. Her body could produce no tears, but she choked back a sob as she walked up to her mother, unable to contain her elation.
“Mamá— your hair has gone gray” she observed.
Her mom— named Julieta— stifled back a laugh, “Of course it has, after losing you, my sweet girl. It’s been the hardest months of our lives.”
María’s heart sank, but she was not surprised. Grief was a funny, floundering thing. It would take much more than a year for the pain to fade.
“I’ve missed you so much,” María assured, “But we’ll always be together on Dia de Murertos”— so long as you remember to put me on the ofrenda.”
“Always.”
María smiled, but could feel the bittersweet tang in its edges.
She only had one day. Twenty four hours. They deserved so much more. She deserved so much more. If only they knew just how much she had missed them, longed to see them every day as they had her.
“And what about you, Papá?” María asked, turning to her father Manuel, “How is work, and how is Dante?”
Her father almost appeared too shocked to speak, but he found his voice as we wiped the silent tears off of his cheeks.
“Dante slept in your bed for days, and has missed you as much as we have. We all… felt the loss of you presence.”
María looked down, unsure of how to respond. Instead of words, she reached out for her father’s hand, though she could not grasp it.
“I’m here now,” she assured, “For you. For mamá. For Juan. And for baby Carlos.”
Her family looked at her then with gratitude, and María wished more than anything she could hug them all— take their hands in hers and feel the warmth of their skin.
Her parents must have understood, for they walked up to her, and her father placed a hand in the air on the shoulder.
“It’s okay, mija,” her father said, “We’ll always have Dia de Los Muertos”

when people would ask him what motivated him to become the person that he was today, it’s always the standard answer of, my father of course, but in his head he would say, it was actually my mother’s backlogged dreams. no one knows that this is his answer, he tries very hard nowadays to keep his mother’s name out of his mouth.
it used to change over the years how they approached questions about fame, how in many ways they would never be their father or their sibling luna, and how that drove them from being off the big stage and instead just stick to being… behind it. all of that to say dante would never promise to be quiet, during their early twenties they had spent most of their time running through people and things and their mother told them that one day they'd crash and burn and... then they did.
but that’s getting ahead of the story. the story really starts on a hot night in august, dante is born out of an already flighty relationship. his mother was on her way to being someone, she wasn’t famous by any means but famous enough to have a small following and by the time that dante was actually here most of those dreams came crashing down. they struggled, partly because his mother wanted his father in his life but struggled because she refused to receive help from his father. it would be a back and forth game until his father, his wife, and sibling would move to new york city and dante would stay with his mother and watch her go through her own set of relationships that would never work out.
he still of course went to new york to visit for a couple of months at a time, he was never going to be the actor of the family, but he did often listen into conversations his father and luna would have when it came to music, by the time he would get back to his mother’s he’d be half into a project, writing songs, and making experimental sounds.
with the success of his father’s family it began to take a toll on his back at home. people would say things about him and his mother, rumours that would fly off the handle of the actress that could have been had she not had a tumultuous relationship with his father. his little brother is born and dante tries to keep his head down.
while his family is complicated he can’t help but feel love for them whenever he was able to visit, though it always felt like he was on the outside looking in. he could relate to his father on music but it was never the same genre. the bond that he should have with his dad was strained but that’s just because he remembers everything that’s happened to his mom.
skip a few years, glossing over all the public scandals that dante gets himself into, a public outing with the wrong guy, and an incident with his brother where he was meant to protect him and just couldn’t get to him in time, his mother is done with dante. his brother may have forgiven him but his mother hasn’t. in fact, it’s been so long since they last talked it’s often samuel going between both of them when they’re around for the rare family function.
dante disappears for about a year and comes back under a different pen name luan guerrero, luan in portuguese means ‘moon’ in tribute to his sibling who was able to accomplish so much, but in chinese it also means 'bird' or 'bell'. they always liked a double meaning. dante isn’t known by their mother’s maiden name, it only seemed appropriate that despite everything they’ve been through, there’s some part of her in everything that they do. their album ‘decide’ comes out and is a hit. and after that their other projects that they worked equally as hard on become popular too after years of having just a small few appreciating them.
before changing pen names they worked on a lot of hit singles as lyricists, and while it was fulfilling there’s something about being able to have your own voice singing your own songs. they’re still passionate about composing, there’s so many good spanish experimental music and they’re just dying to put their foot in the door with it too.
they’ve moved to valparaiso not that long ago knowing that both of their siblings are here. dante is looking for a fresh start and make more music and shed some of their old ways, but dante is also a leo so we’ll see how that goes !!

BLUE BEETLE (2023)

I’m not going to lie. I’ve never heard of the character of Blue Beetle before this film. When I first heard of the title, I thought it may be a movie about a Volkswagen. I asked my nephew, who is more up to date on comic book characters, what I should know about Blue Beetle, and he explained that the version of the character in the film (who is apparently the second Blue Beetle in the comic saga) is “just your normal teenage ‘relatable’ superhero.”
And yes, this Blue Beetle is sort of like a DC version of Spider-Man with a different insect and more alien tech. Beyond the Spider-Man connection, Blue Beetle also has certain connections to Iron Man (the high-tech armor suit) and Venom (symbiotic connection to the alien).
Still, I’ve got to admit, while there was nothing all that unique about the overall story of Blue Beetle – other than the fact that it is strongly grounded in Hispanic culture – the movie was a whole lot of fun. In fact, it was probably the most purely enjoyable DC film since the similarly low-key Shazam! (The first Shazam! movie that is, the second one kind of stunk.)
After the recent calamitous popular and critical crash and burn of the much higher profile The Flash (which I have to admit, I mostly liked),the new DC needed a low-key charmer like this to get back on track.
And speaking of low-key charmers, the film certainly scored one in casting Xolo Maridueña – previously best known as one of the lead characters in the series Cobra Kai – as the hero. Maridueña has the type of every-kid sense of wonder which is necessary for a character like this to work. As his uncle says, “He’s like Superman of Metropolis or the Flash of Central City — but not as good.”
He is also surrounded with an interesting and varied family unit, particularly Adriana Barraza as a surprisingly able Nana and George Lopez adding comic relief as the conspiracy theory spouting uncle.
In lots of ways, Blue Beetle is typical superhero fare – the alien trinket with unimaginable power, the evil corporation headed by a megalomaniac tycoon (Susan Sarandon) desperately trying to get her hands on the item, no matter who it hurts. (She often says the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, even though she is personally never one of the few making these sacrifices.)
However, it is not the story that makes Blue Beetle so good. It’s just so upbeat and good humored that it’s hard not to embrace, with enough off-the-beaten-path quirks to capture even someone who is getting a bit of superhero fatigue – which can be said about a lot of us at this point.
Blue Beetle is a fine reminder of why the word “comic” is part of the term “comic book.” After way too much of the DC movie universe has been dark, moody and morose – we’re looking at you Zack Snyder – it’s nice for some of these stories to just be good old-fashioned fun.

Pitch for the third installment in the Until Dawn/The Quarry trilogy:
1) The title: META
(reason: double entendre since the game is a meta-take on horror gaming and a reference to the Metaverse)
2) The plot
In 1984, a mysterious serial killer known as The Gravedigger murders a sibling pair who were on their way to visit family.
In the present day, a group of people vacationing in the same spot as the Gravedigger murders realize they’re being stalked. But as the night goes on, the vacationers realize there’s something else to fear aside from the killer. Something…supernatural-
Wait…why does this feel familiar? Isn’t this the same plot as Until Dawn? Also, this doesn’t feel too different from The Quarry. Something feels wrong with this set-up…
As the game goes on, the main characters start to feel that there’s something off about their world. They feel like they’re just following a script and that they have no control over their actions. That’s when we get the big reveal; they’re trapped inside a virtual world that was developed by Supermassive Games. In reality, the main characters are gamers who were brought in by Supermassive to test a new virtual reality game. However, a rogue programmer hacked the game, resulting in the gamers losing their memories, being stripped of their free will, and becoming trapped inside.
You, the player(s), are an actual character in the story. You’re a Supermassive employee trying to save the gamers by playing the rogue programmer’s script and making choices for the helpless gamers. It’s up to you to stop the rogue programmer, who is making the virtual world more and more nightmarish as the story goes on.
So, while chapters 1-6 play out like a typical Supermassive game, chapters 7-10 become more of a surreal nightmare due to the rogue programmer fighting back against the player.
3) Inspirations (to get a feel for how I imagined the game would turn out):
The Backrooms, The Cell, Doki Doki Literature Club, Harvester, Don’t Worry Darling, WandaVision, Too Many Cooks, Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, Danganronpa V3, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch
Sword Art Online and The Matrix, for non-horror inspirations
Squid Game, sorta kinda. It’s mainly the concept of this evil overseer watching over these people who are being forced to take part in the overseer’s game.
4) The main playable cast:
* Sean Parker (INTOLERANT, ARROGANT, CONFIDENT): A men’s rights activist/Andrew Tate-type gamer. He is played by Gregg Sulkin.
* Kim Myung-seok (BRAVE, RATIONAL, STOIC): An esports player from South Korea. He is played by Wi Ha-joon.
* Sameer Patel (INSECURE, RELAXED, DEFENSIVE): A gaming journalist from the United Kingdom. He is played by Dev Patel.
* Luis Santos (FOOLHARDY, CHARMING, BRASH): A gamer from Los Angeles and Melissa’s love interest. He is played by Anthony Ramos.
* Melissa Ramirez (AMBITIOUS, ADVENTUROUS, SELFISH): A gamer from Texas and Luis’ love interest. She is played by Leslie Grace.
* Donna Smith (COMMANDING, KIND, ADAPTABLE): A gamer who becomes the de facto leader of the group. She is played by Zazie Beetz.
* June Greene (REBELLIOUS, DETERMINED, WITTY): An e-girl streamer who is the first to realize something is off about the world. She is played by Erin Kellyman.
* Katrina Mason (NAIVE, ANTI-SOCIAL, FEARFUL): A NEET-type gamer who reluctantly joins the group. She is played by Kaitlyn Dever.
(Romance paths: Luis x Melissa, June x Katrina, Donna can choose between Myung-seok and Sameer. Sean is the only one without a romance path, for obvious reasons.)
5) Other characters:
* The Player, a gender-neutral Supermassive employee who, from the real world, is guiding the characters to safety (or getting them killed).
* Dante Connors: The rogue programmer responsible for trapping the gamers. He is the main villain of the game. Dante is played by David Tennant.
* The CEO of Supermassive, who fulfills the same role as the Curator, the Therapist, and Eliza Vorez. To make this as meta as possible, he is played by the actual CEO of the company.

Thoughts on Fence: Rise (Volume Five)
Warning! The following will contain spoilers for Fence: Rise (Volume Five). Please proceed at your own risk. Volume Five is in the bag, and, as usual, I cannot wait to see The Halverton Training Camp story arc concludes in the next issue. Naturally, I had some thoughts in order from least important to most important.
It was great seeing Kally and Tanner again if only for a moment.
So far, I like MacRob the best out of the competing schools, Halverton is okay, but I cannot stand the snobs from Lowther who seem to think their all that and a bag of chips despite placing fourth. I’m very interested to see more of Terrell Holmes, Nate Spencer, Gian Torres, and Marcus Washington who all seem very cool and interesting new additions. I’m also curious to see more of Hector Ramirez and Stefano “Van” Remo as we didn’t see much from either of them.
I adored Dante letting Bobby put pom hair ties in his hair. If that isn’t love, I’ll eat your hat. Unofficial boyfriend anyone? It was also great Bobby getting the role of Team Manager; I’m happy for that little ray of sunshine.
The only reason Aiden isn’t better at fencing has to do with his personal lack of interest and Harvard’s ranking. If Harvard improves his low lines, Aiden would likely move up alongside of him.
I suspect Seiji will at minimum either lose a point or even a practice match in the next volume. The question is will it be Scott Langtree (who will be disappointed not to gain a new teammate), Marcus Washington (who shows the greatest talen), or Saunchul Park (who is clearly out for blood) that lands the blow. Seiji is very disciplined and fast, but he is also arrogant and a bit predictable which is likely a major contributor to how Jesse beat him. He may want to be a bit more dynamic in how he approaches his future matches. As for Jesse and Seiji, I’m not surprised they were more at one time than simply friends as it was heavily hinted at in France. I don’t for a moment believe Seiji ever saw Jesse in that way nor do I think what they had together was in any way healthy. The real villain is Robert Coste.
I’m not surprised, but I am disappointed that once again Nicholas is at the bottom of the fencing order. In all fairness, he is being forced to improve his two weakest areas of technique and defense through these drills. I’m pleased he’s shown improvement, and I look forward to him proving once again to be a fast learner. All he needs is Jesse’s skill to be monster at fencing possibly even the greatest. I suspect the series will end with some combination Nicholas, Seiji, and Jesse on the piste at the state finals.
Previously, I have posted about which person will be the first to realize how Nicholas is related to Jesse. Once again, we have movement in which Bobby Rodriguez noticed similarities in Jesse’s and Nicholas’s respective styles. I suspect Coach Williams may already know, but if she does, she isn’t making it obvious in any way.
Finally, we have the return of Kyle Allen who conveniently didn’t mention how he was Jesse’s cousin, though I suspect his mother is Robert Coste’s sister making him also related to Nicholas. I can say he is clearly overplaying how close he is to Jesse as he had no idea who Nicholas was, or the fact Jesse is eyeing him as threat for Seiji’s attention and a potential threat on the piste. Likewise, he isn't attending Exton with Jesse Coste even though they are "so close." Out of everyone, he would be the last person to recognize and except Nicholas Cox as Jesse Coste’s long lost half-brother. I would love for the rematch where Nicholas wipes the floor with him, but I’ll settle for his shock over Nicholas finally beating Emmet Scott by the end of the training camp.
The next chapter cannot come soon enough. Maybe Nate Spencer’s statement of “It’s the Kind of Place that changes everything” may prove to be prophetic foreshadowing. I will look forward to whatever may transpire. Go King's Row!

argyle is the second oldest, his elder brother oliver is in college outta state, so argyle spends a lot of his free time looking after his younger siblings, when he's not hanging with jonathan or working. his mom works two jobs, his dad works construction and is often away for weeks at a time wherever the work is, he's first generation mexican-american, born and raised in lenora hills, CA, his parents moved to california when they were pregnant with his older brother, because of that argyle feels a little lost culturally sometimes. he has a good relationship with his mama, and loves her so much, he loves his dad too but his dad doesn't have such an active role since he is away working a lot, and is more of a man of few words, but he's kind and loving, and also where argyle gets his autism from.
argyle is autistic but undiagnosed, lord knows being one of four kids is expensive as shit, and diagnosis is an expense his parents simply couldn't afford, although his mama is very aware her son is sensitive and different from most other kids his age, and she very much tried to protect him from the bullies when he was a little kid. since he was the kid that never got invited to birthday parties, the kid that people would tease and make fun of, and argyle would a lot of the time think they were his friends.
argyle is all about the free love movement of the sixties and doesn't subscribe to labels, he likes who he likes, and it doesn't matter what they have in their pants, they're more of a vibes over looks type of person, they appreciate honesty, loyalty and kindness in people over anything else.
he obviously enjoys getting high, but never does it around his younger sibings, its his relaxation and he really enjoys getting high with jonathan while listening to music, and letting jonathan geek out about music, when he's high he is very affectionate, loves hugs, and snuggling, and casual affection.
