i was trying and failing hard to articulate it last night bcs i was high as balls but the win terms for diegesis and lee's first game always Gets me bcs of the trust they have to put in each other. diegesis never Wants to hurt lee though he is very much capable of doing so, even if he threatens such, and lee can Only win the first game if he trusts diegesis to be true to his character. conversely diegesis has to trust lee to look past his indignation towards him and the bet as a whole to recognize him as a "person" (in the terms of his character and how it plays into the narrative) and treat him accordingly. good good shit

it's also funny and weirdly sweet for how much diegesis tries to win over lee with how "enjoyable" living as his puppet would be (i.e. getting pumped full of dopamine non-stop) that what begins to bring them together is diegesis's refusal to take advantage of lee beyond anything he hasn't agreed to. #lovewins

wait im replaying npf and having a big brain (stupid) moment. diegesis's ban isn't impatience, it's insincerity ☹️. he gets hurt by lee calling his praise "cheap" not because he's trying to rush through the story, but because diegesis meant it wholeheartedly—everything he says or does, every narrative he shapes, is a direct extension of his being, and that includes the sort of admiration he feels towards lee. lee dismissed his praise out of fear at the genuine Feeling it inspired in him, rejecting his narrative and diegesis in turn

#ouuhhh *brain hurts* #it also definitely says Something about how lee manufactures emotion #he Seems to get agitated very easily but is otherwise is pretty chill. it's a bad quality he recognizes and conflates to isolate himself #people are assholes! why bother with them when you're just that much more likely to wind up hurt than healed. #so he forces emotional distance btween himself and diegesis which just hurts them both. ow
