🎤🎤 thoughts on boy now that it’s been a week?
oh my god a true opportunity to monologue i'm so sorry for how i'm about to answer this.
so the thing about luke's music, to me, is that each song is its own little world and each world exists within the same galaxy of the album where it all feels cohesive and like it belongs together, and then all of it lives together in the same universe of luke vibes. it all feels uniquely him and it all makes you feel like you're living inside it.
so. boy as a galaxy. i love the every song planet (shocking i know) and hearing the manifestation of these things luke has been talking about in interviews - saying more with less, leaning into the things he liked most about wfttwtaf sonically, looking more outward than inward. although it's luke, so there's always going to be some kind of introspection and existential spiral lurking in the songs. <3
i love the way every song can be open to different meanings depending on the listener, but at the same time luke has told us enough about his perspective on them that we have the option of framing them that way. which, personally, makes the whole thing more devastating (in a nice way). i love the way his mind works and the way his thoughts manifest into songs in slightly unexpected and completely non-cliche ways.
something like close enough to feel you - listening to it for the first time, you might not necessarily make the connection to the context luke described for it. it could be a yearning love song, or an internal monologue to himself addressing the tension between optimism and hopelessness.
but then when you hear what he says about it - basically wanting to keep experiencing the pain of a loss because it helps you feel close to the someone or something you lost - and it's like oh! my god! that fits perfectly! but it's presented in such a specifically wonderful luke way.
sonically, i love the way boy leans into some different things like new wave vocals and 2000s production vibes, and all the things luke does with his voice. there's more of his lower register in a lot of these songs than we usually get, which is a fun novelty, and a lot of this sort of quiet whispering-in-your-ear stuff that makes the songs feel intimate.
anyone who's followed me for more than a minute knows i struggle with the concept of favorites or rankings, but something that hit me from the first listen of boy and remains true today - i'm still your boy and promises are perfect to open and close the album, and the cycle of promises back into i'm still your boy when you're looping is incredible in the most devastating way. you can tell he thought about the song order, including a loop situation. because of course he did. he's one of us.
anyway, the point is that i love boy and i love luke's brain and i love having a new galaxy of luke songs to visit that complements wfttwtaf while still being totally different.
you probably just wanted a simple answer about how i'm enjoying the album and which songs i like best and i'm sorry for all this babbling but i am incapable of being normal about luke hemmings. <3
