DND!Rayn Backstory C-4 Violence
Chapter 4 [Violence]
“What did he lose? We can’t end examining him just because he accepted the offer, we should know about him too.”
Rayn stands out on the hill, practicing his sword stances and fighting. A weapon still provides help even if he cannot cast, a weapon will let him protect her. Protect the town, protect what she cares about. He looks down the hill and walks down it, to the town.
“Hey Rayn!” She calls over to him, running up to greet him.
“Hi- how were your studies?” He hugs her, happy to see her after such a long period of time
“It was okay, I like studying with you more. How was your day?” She responds with her voice going from a low, being tired, to a joyful, happy tone, happy to be with Rayn again.
“It was boring, but it is much better with you here.” He lets go of the hug and holds her hand, responding with joy.
“Awe, glad to be here Rayn. Want to go hang out by the gates? I can show you what I learned.” She holds his hand tightly as she speaks, pulling him towards the gates.
“Okay okay, I am going.” He says as he runs with her, the town around as they run on the brown bricked path.
They look up at the walls, running out the gate and spinning around. Rayn looks as she twirls, leaves surrounding her and branches dancing in her light, the sun not as bright as her. He feels the breeze flow past him as she casts, happy to have helped her realize her potential. Happy to still know he is worth something with his sword, and making her happy.
- - - - -
The gods, not the friendliest with each other. They wish to be the most appreciated, and there are some who will commit to that will. There are people who want power, or just to siege places. People who commit wrongs and harm others for reasons that are no good.
The army lines up, the leader pointing at the town with her sword, declaring the army to attack. They charge towards it, armored soldiers and wizards with spells prepared, conquer for their god and conquer for power. No mercy in mind they go onwards.
Soldiers fight off the guards as they approach, killing those who do try to resist. Swords dig through the plates of the armor. Wizards take control of mages, many fall back to alert the others.
“Hey- fight the control- please, I do not want to hurt you.” He backs up as he speaks, holding his sword up and defending the thorny vines best he can.
She keeps forming vine attacks from the ground, grabbing at him best she can. Each attack tears past his heart and fabric, shredding into pieces.
“Please-” He begs as she keeps the attacks going, continuing to back up.
A soldier from the enemies approaches them, and slashes his sword behind her.
- - - - -
“Much of a reason to hate mages, don’t you think? Look at that, a mage used mind controlling to force his loved one to fight him, and the god’s vile will allowed this siege to happen, and that soldier to swing at her. If he had power, he could have stopped the soldier, he could have killed the mage who did this to her, he could have taken the hit for her. But no, all he could do was retreat as she told him with her last breath. Yes, he will obey us.”

Meet Rayne, my Tav from my first finished Baldur's Gate 3 playthrough. She is a Mephistopheles Tiefling with the Red Draconic Sorcerer class which I've had as a dnd character idea before and thought it would fit with the game as well. She's a spunky character with both roguish and heroic tendencies and likes adventuring, collecting magical artifacts and meditating to attune herself to her inner powers. I'll be delving deeper into her backstory in my future posts of her art. I hope you like her ^^
I've been planning on making BG3 art for a while but due to some irl stuff, I never got to. And I've been wanting to illustrate my playthrough for a while and now I got to have some more time to do so. I will be starting with presenting my first Tav and then maybe following with some short comics of moments from my playthrough.

A shaded commission of Rayn (and, well, also Rayn), an important NPC in the client's dark-and-delightful DnD campaign! Rayn is currently trying to live with integrity and atonement, but he has a lot of darkness in his backstory that still drags him down. So the client thought a spooky composition featuring a reflection of his past self would be fun! Don't worry, Rayn, who hasn't had a zombielike physical manifestation of their past wrongdoings crawl out of a cool Gothic mirror and seize them with poisonous shadow-stained hands?

Ask and thou shalt receive @the-kings-jester
(Sorry this is a day late I got busy with work and other endeavors)
My kind of current/most favorite DND character right now is my Tiefling Bard/Rogue Safiya Eirenelle!
Tumblr media
She is a typical slutty bard but it’s been really fun to explore the depth to that and just have a ton of fun with her. She’s actually my second character for this campaign cause the first left after finding her family again.
As for Monster of the Week, it very much falls more into the TV show type motw of “New Arc, New Problem” set in fictional Bedford, Oregon. I have five players for it who play:
Agent Abigail “Goose” Gooseling, the Professional/flake
Zoey Parrish, the Mundane/Spooky
Delilah Di, the Spellcaster (and I’m looking to write a homebrew playbook for necromancy for her!!)
Michael Quinn, the Expert
And Talia Rayne, the Monstrous (he’s half ice-Phoenix)
We’ve been playing for over a year now which is awesome and we’re in our fifth arc which is dealing with Quinn’s backstory monster and all of them are ✨suffering✨. It’s been so much fun tho and I love my players so much!

DND!Rayn Backstory C-3 [Violence]
Violence Warning
Chapter 3 [Warning: Violence and… Cuddles? Some people do not like excessively described wholesome moments.] This is page 6
“Tragedy also helps increase an urge for power, and he has experienced that indeed. If we give him the power to cause vengeance, he will obey us. His tragedies will get him to stay. And, he will understand our urge for vengeance.”
Rayn swings his sword at the wizard, being pushed back by a wind spell a bit too late. He keeps running at them, his sword cutting through their cloth and flesh, blood staining his sword as he continues advancing. The wizard casts a weak spell on Rayn, a bolt hitting Rayn. Nothing left to lose, no life to care about, no one left to defend. Rayn swings his sword down forcefully through the wizard, making sure to at least break a bone, if penetrating their heart was not enough.
He looks back at what is left of the town, not entering as the army seizes it. His companions now dead, as signaled by the white arrow shot sky high. Nothing left, nowhere to go, except to continue his studies, and not much health left to go on. Zap. Captured by a soldier.
- - - - -
His hands on her shoulders, close to her and looking into her green eyes. He wonders how long she has felt this way. He knows this is right, it makes her happy, it makes him happy; they are happy. There is not a doubt of this being wrong, only the pure joy of knowing he will be able to make her happy.
“I love you,” Rayn speaks softly as he looks at her.
“I love you too,” She responds, looking at him, pulling him into a hug.
They stay close for a while, not wanting to do anything but be in each other’s arms. They eventually lay against the bed, staring into each other’s eyes again. “Thank you, for everything Rayn.” She smiles as she looks, joy radiating off her.
“Thank you for telling me, I would have never known you felt like this.” He responds cheerfully, pulling her over him and admiring her. “You are so pretty.”
“You dummy, I love you a lot.” She looks at him while speaking, pulling close to him yet again, her head next to his as she squeezes him tightly.
“Aaa, I love you moree.” He moves left and right, squeezing her just as much, his words barely making sense as he speaks.
- - - - -
He wakes up and looks around, seeing the kidnapper in the cart and his hands bound. Not dead? What use is there with him? He holds his hand together, making a tense push as he attempts to cast, and to his surprise, a flash of energy comes out and strikes the person in front, knocking them off the cart.
“Shit, when did I get magic?” He speaks with surprise looking around, wondering if anyone else saw that.
He casts mage hand and undoes his bindings, getting up and looking at his weapon. It seems to glow with a dark aura.
“Makes sense they took the weapon too, they could probably sell it.” He speaks to no one, but knows there is someone who granted him power. A chance to escape.

DND!Rayn Backstory C-2
Chapter 2
“Efficiency, that is what you are looking for, right? What better to hunt those wild magic users than someone who studies magic? Yes, slay those mages who have wronged you without getting your hands dirty.”
Rayn looks down at his book, trying to move his arms to cast mage hand, to no success.
“Hey Rayn, how is it going?” She looks at him staring down, hoping to get his attention as she calls to him.
“I can’t seem to cast any spells, what about you?” He replies.
He closes the book and looks up at her, looking at the green and brown clothes on her and the wonderful wooden staff she holds. He thinks about his failure of magic but dismisses it, knowing she is doing well.
“Druid and Cleric teachings have been working well! Thank you for teaching me Rayn, it means a lot.” She holds her staff with both hands as she speaks, looking at the books Rayn has.
“You look beautiful, you know. I am glad to help you.” He replies covering his tone of wishing he could cast, genuinely happy for.
“Th-thank you, where did that come from?” She stumbles on her words as she speaks, “You seem to have a lot of different books, maybe a focus would suit you better. Have you tried to work on just one?”
“Wizard, these all fit what a wizard can do.” He opens the book to the bookmark, showing her the mage hand spell. “That would be the best way for me to do magic, lots of variety and it fits well with my studying.”
“Well, you can always be granted magical ability by a god, Paladin or Cleric.” She suggests, hoping to help him.
“Those are all limited in spell choice, and I hope to learn how to do magic with my own abilities.” He sighs as he puts the book down, looking back at her. “Is there anything you wanted to do?”
“I wanted to check up on you, since it has been a while.” She says, fumbling around with her staff.
“Well, I have trained with a sword. That is about it for progress.” He replies as he stacks the books and puts them away.
“Sword? You really should try paladin, it would fit you.” She grabs his hand and pulls him, “Come on, we are going.”
“Okay, okay.”
- - - - -
He looks down at the books, a mage who can use weapons and magic, the blessings of a paladin or the corruption of a warlock. What god would want his tainted soul? Filled with loss, corruption, and vengeance. Besides, paladins are limited, it is warlocks who have more options. A Hexblade warlock. Still, with nothing to offer, he feels he is worthless.
“Hey Rayn, how is the studying going?” He looks over at Rayn, his boyfriend caught up behind him looking at the books.
“I will sign a deal for power, if I want magic. I have nothing to offer though, my power would not please a patron.” Rayn replies with a blank and empty tone, looking at the other searching the books.
“That's not true, you do well in battle, If you did not distract that mage I don’t think I could have shot him,” he says, pondering.
“You are good at studying, you know, have you considered that your investigation skills and magic knowledge might be helpful? If they need a bow to shoot their arrow, you give them that.” He speaks over to them while looking at the books, returning to them.
“Thanks.” Rayn replies as he leaves the room, looking outside again.
Rayn stares at the field past the walls, the horizon ahead, wondering what lies, wondering if defending this town is worth it. All the magical knowledge, yet none useful for him. He sighs and closes his eyes as he faces down, remembering the last time he considered being a paladin.
- - - - -
“Your soul is unholy, our god does not want someone who craves power instead of protection, action instead of reaction, destruction and not progression.” The priest speaks loudly, releasing Rayn.
“Yeah, I expected that.” Rayn steps down and goes back to his friend, speaking much less loud than the priest.
“What? Rayn, you are not those things, you have seemed to always want to protect and be kind, he must be wrong-” She speaks fast and worryingly, knowing that Rayn is good.
“You heard him, the priest is not wrong, let's go.” He replies low, expecting this to happen but still disappointed, walking past her.
“Rayn.’
“What?”
“I know you are a good person.” She follows him out of the building, speaking as kindly as she can to avoid sounding annoyed.
“Why? Why are you trying to convince me? Is this because you want to recruit me?” He speaks sounding annoyed, wanting to be done with this religion thing.
“No Rayn, because I love you-” She stops herself suddenly, realizing what she said and blanking out.
“You… what?” He turns around, stopping and looking at her with a beating in his heart.
“Love you,” she repeats.
He seems stunned by this, not knowing what to do, trying to comprehend his feelings about her. Love, a strong word, a scary word, a word he does not know much about. Love? Does he love her-
“Do you?” she asks him, scared of his response and grasping onto her staff best she can.
“I think… I do. I love you too.” He speaks very blank, still trying to comprehend what happened, wondering if this is real as tears drop down from his face. “Rayn?”
“Yeah?”
“Are you okay?”
“No-”
“A soul that would be devoted to you, he would complete what we need done. The impurities are benefits to us, his holy friend does not even halt us, as they exist regardless of us. A useful soldier for us, do you see?

DND!Rayn "Backstory."
(He has no class this whole story.)
Chapter 1
“Behold! A hunter! Yes, someone who knows how to follow these foes. Weak, we all are weak really, only some of us outshine the others. But who stands up to fight? Those who stand up may end up proving their worth, even if they do not learn magic; after all, training is what matters most.”
Rayn steps back, holding the weapon on his left, upwards, preparing against the foe. His boots stay in the dirt, holding his position to fight against this foe. Another mage, one who alters others to fight. He stares at them and how they cast their spells, as they force out another elemental out of a magic weapon. He watches them move their hands from left to right, their whole body swaying as they drag the dark blue liquid from his ally’s bow. Seeing the elemental form and standing up, and running to it to attack the moment it begins to target the archer. He swings his longsword with full might, cutting through the weak elemental and making a death stare to the mage.
“Hey bud calm down, I just want to liberate your magic.” The mage speaks shakingly as they step back, still trying to keep the promising tone as they speak; partially worried for their survival, but more aware of the elemental reforming behind Rayn.
He steps forwards, approaching the mage with his weapon before the elemental grabs him with magical ropes from itself, the mage beginning to cast a spell against him. He looks up to hope for an arrow to pass, to hope that the archer still fights despite their weapon now weakened. He closes his eyes.
- - - - -
The sun shines as he sits beside his friend, the grassy hill giving a wonderful view of the sunny city. The sun shines against the white bricks of the church, dark smoke rises from the forge, and carts stay near the markets. A leaf falls from the tree above them, spinning down like a spider, landing on his head.
“You got a leaf on you!” She chuckles with a hand to her mouth, reaching for the leaf and grabbing it off him.
“Awe, I was hoping to do my druid impression.” He looks at the leaf then her, putting his hands to his head to pretend to have antlers.
“Haha, Rayn do you think you could pull off a druid? I had to drag you out here~” She speaks as she puts the leaf back on his head, looking at his messy hair.
“Hey, research is important,” he replies, “And I do go out, I need materials to learn, specially making potions.”
“You have to enjoy the nature, not just search for materials dummy.” She playfully teases him, looking at the lack of mud on his boots compared to her’s.
“You could be a druid then, if you want to share nature that much.” He grabs the leaf as he speaks, putting it on her head.
“You really think so? There is so much to learn-” Her confusion of magic bleeds through her words, a subject that not many know.
“I wouldn’t mind helping you learn, studying magic can be fun!” He speaks joyfully, thinking of the possibilities that come from being able to study with her.
“Maybe I should! Do you think I am able to use magic?” Her hands press against the grass as she looks at him, a glimmer in her eyes as she speaks.
"Your dad is a paladin and your mom is a cleric, I am sure you will be able to.” He feels the grass move down, sharing her excitement over learning magic, beaming with delight as they talk.
“When do you think I should start learning?” She speaks with a smile and joy, already ready to study with him.
“I can set you up soon, maybe even tomorrow,” he replies, “if you would like.”
“Would I?” She puts her hands on his shoulders, shaking him with excitement, “Of course I would!”
“Okay Okay I will set you up-” He replies before being interrupted by her.
“Thank you!” She wraps her arms around him, gushing with excitement as she hugs him.
“You’re welcome.”
- - - - -
The arrow shoots over Rayn, hitting the mage in the shoulder. Rayn hears them shout and begins to shake, the elemental rushing over to aid its controller. Rayn seizes this opportunity and attacks the mage, swinging his sword from the right this time, slashing against the mage’s cloth armor. It attempts to escape after the swing, the elemental moving it, but just as quick as it starts, Rayn kicks at their thighs to knock them down.
“Do you have anything to say, tiefling?” Rayn scowls him, holding the sword to his neck as the elemental returns to the archer.
“Well, hunter, know that magic should not be confined to such things, be free from the shackles gods put. If you accept this, you can have power too.” The mage looks up at him, beginning to cast fireball before being shot again by an arrow, hitting their neck. “WOO perfect shot, told you this magic weapon was good!” The archer shouts from their position, the short wall giving him the ability to see the success.
“How the hell did you do that without hitting me?” Rayn glances over at him, denouncing his reckless behavior.
“It worked didn’t it? Nothing to worry about!” The archer calls him over, speaking without a concern.
“Fine,” Rayn responds as he walks over, not speaking loud enough for the archer to hear him.
“See how he uses a weapon, see the weaknesses that not having magic causes him? He could move his hands when restrained, yet that was no help. One blast could have ended that much faster.”
Chapter 1 End.

Here's my full post of Rayne which I will direct future related posts to. I will tag her with #TavRayne if anyone wants to start following along with her journey. She is my Tav OC from my first finished playthrough of BG3 and she is a Tiefling Sorcerer with Draconic Bloodline. I had this character made for a dnd game for a while but I never got to play her and then when Baldur's Gate 3 launched, I had my chance of playing her this way and I had lots of fun roleplaying her.
Her backstory was slightly changed between the original dnd story and the BG3 version so that it fits better with the setting, but I kept most of it the same.
It's pretty long, but I decided to put it here in case anyone might like to know about her more. I am not the best with descriptions sometimes and I was still trying to be brief, I also did not make her story while checking if any of it is connected to lore or not, I went along with what I thought was an interesting idea for a character, and the dnd sessions I was part of didn't require full knowledge of all of the books that contain the lore. In case anyone may feel like something doesn't feel lore accurate.
She was raised in her first years by her family that consisted of her father that started her sorcerous bloodline by entrapping the soul of a dragon in secret, her mother that was partly coerced into a marriage with her father and 3 siblings that were close to her age but not allowed to see her.
Although on the surface, it seemed like a family of a powerful Sorcerer that is successful, in reality, Rayne was raised for one purpose only, which she was not aware of yet. Her connections to her siblings and even to her mother were frayed in order for her to train her abilities, and although she received praise an approval for being able to overcome any challenge in her training, she would usually sneak away to play with her siblings as well.
One day, they decide to play a game where they each present something secret to each other, and she decides to bring her father's spellbook which she always sees but isn't allowed to look into. Because she was taught how to write mostly infernal and primordial and mostly spells, once she opens the book and decides to tell her siblings what she found, she finds a lot of sacrificial ritual spells and learns of her father entrapping a dragon's soul and using his successors of infernal heritage that would gain the draconic power to absorb their power and maintain his own, where one successor that has inherited the draconic power would be trained to be the strongest and then used as the primary sacrifice, while the siblings are used as collateral for ensuring the success of the ritual. The ritual also requires a type of lettering on the body of the main sacrifice, and Rayne already had it done. She half doesn't believe that they would actually be sacrificed, but ultimately tries to devise a plan with the siblings to find out more and what they can do in their situation.
In the end, the father was already close enough for the ritual to commence, and when he sees his book missing, he transports his kids in the ritual and starts it. Because the ritual also needs Rayne and anyone in her place to be willing with the transfer, it ruins the ritual and instead makes her powers go haywire and burn down the entire building they were under. She wakes up only to see ash everywhere and nobody in sight, and she stays there for an indeterminate amount of time trying to process what just happened until a fearful group of guard approach and take her away. Some of the inscriptions on her body remain etched into her skin as burn marks, and she remains with some of the marks always on her.
Most people in the vicinity don't understand what happened in that place and believe that she was at fault and the authorities plan to take her to a special prison. By that point, Rayne is heavily traumatized and nonresponsive.
On her way to the prison, a member of a powerful wizard guild shows up and takes her instead after hearing of the incident that her powers caused and Rayne solely accepts because she's given food. That is where she starts learning and realizes that there is more to the inscriptions that she was taught for the ritual and she also learns to read and write common. As she is given better conditions there, she gradually becomes more receptive to others over a few years but she still has a feeling that she might once again be trained in order to be used, so after she starts learning more of the world that she realized she was isolated from by her father, she begins to look into their operation closer, only to find out that they were using different people of tiefling descent in order to harness magical abilities from them, and she ends up making another plan to evade and help those tieflings.
She uses some of the things she was taught for her father's rituals to instead use that power herself and breaks the device that hold the tieflings and harness their powers one night. That night, she helps the tieflings escape on their own and she then runs away being chased by guards and wizards from that guild. This is where she makes her way to a city where she hides. For the game, I made it so that city is actually Baldur's Gate where she winds up for good.
Her life in the new city starts from the very bottom, as she tries to dodge the guards that are after her bounty, and she doesn't have any food or shelter and she is still in shock after the previous events. In the end, she becomes harder to find when sitting among the homeless and sells anything she owns in order to buy food for the small group of homeless people. When she hears some adventurers talk about a failed quest for the retrieval of a special item that the local apothecary needs, she decides to try for herself in order to make some money. Using her innate abilities, despite her still young age, she manages to get the item and deliver it to the apothecary for a reward.
That sparks curiosity among adventurers and people involved and she begins to take on different jobs on retrieving and finding magical and special items, working with both reputable sources and networking around the underground, which becomes her job for a long time in the city. Due to her charismatic nature and ability to always deliver on her quests, she is able to have strong enough connections in the underground of the city to rid herself of the initial accusations due to her past, being able for the first time to live for herself and start once again enjoying using her magic without being reminded of her traumatic past.
At the start of the game or story, she is pretty much in a decent place both in spirit and the house that she owns in the Baldur's Gate, but along with the kidnapping of the mindflayer ship and becoming infected, she finds a group of companions that are more similar to her and each other than they first realize.
For the dnd game, I also noted that the sorcerer father was still alive and could become a challenge in the future, along with the wizard that found her afterwards, both becoming obstacles at one point.
Overall, I really liked playing as her because some parts of her story fit well with the companions. Her experiences with abuse of magic can contrast Gale's nature of being both chill and overly confident when it comes to using magic, but also relates by loving magic just as much. Her story of a father that wants to control her and absorb her power through a ritual and giving her no other purpose can relate to Astarion's story with Cazador, and the idea of his possible apparition really puts her story in the same trope as his. Dealing with a father/authority figure that presents themselves as having her best interests when in reality they are training them to be used can relate to both Shadowheart and Lae'zel, and her sense of adventuring and heroing, can relate to Karlack and Wyll.
Overall, if anyone got to read up to this point, I am looking forward to showing you through a mini comic series different parts of her story with these companions. Thank you for reading up to this point! And if anyone wants to he tagged to future posts, let me know.
