Bond University Physiotherapy Students Work with World Surf League

As the official higher education partner of the World Surf League (WSL), Bond University can offer its physiotherapy students unmatched opportunities in one of the most exciting industries.

Every semester, Bond students have access to internship opportunities across all facets of the organization, including sport management, sports science, event management, marketing and film and television. Bond academics and researchers also have opportunities to engage with the WSL Australia in the work and research.

For more than 20 years, the WSL hosts a yearly world surf league championship at Snapper Rocks on the Gold Coast, the world’s most famous right-hand sandy point break and a favourite location for the world’s best surfers. This event is so popular that it sees approximately 5,000–10,000 spectators on the beach—daily!

This year, the event will take place May 6–13. Surfers in this competition compete for a qualifying position on the 2024 WSL Championship Tour.

Bond Physiotherapy Practical Experience

This year, Bond physiotherapy students, academics, and Bond’s Water Based Research Unit (WBRU), will be holding surfer health checks for members of the public attending the event in May. These health checks will be available to surfers and spectators, and will provide as Bond DPT students with the opportunity to shadow their academics in the field and take in a world-class sports tournament.

The Bond physio students and academics will measure a participants’ blood pressure, ankle hip and shoulder strength, motion and flexibility, ear health, and body composition. The data collected from these checks will be entered into the WBRU database of both pro and recreational surfers, with participants receiving a report on how their results compare and outlining suggested areas they may like to work on or address with their health professionals of choice.

The fitness data collected will be compared to professional surfers such as Mick Fanning (Australian), Kelly Slater (American) and Stephanie Gilmore (Australian).

They will also measure strength and flexibility, and will conduct a bio-impedance analysis, which is great practical experience for physio students to get hands-on experience.

Assistant Professor of Physiotherapy James Furness overseas students during this practical experience. He has a background in musculoskeletal physiotherapy and he conducts innovative and novel research in the sports of surfing, stand-up paddle boarding, and swimming.

Since 2020, Bond University students in the Faculty of Health Sciences & Medicine and Bond Business School have enjoyed exciting internships with WSL.

The two-year Doctor of Physiotherapy at Bond University is an accelerated degree—three semesters per year instead of just two. This means you can graduate a year ahead of the rest.

So, that's Wright, that's my girl:

Julia Wright is a young aspiring tradeswoman from the late 19th century, currently doing business in Hogsmeade. Hasn't finished Hogwarts yet; in her 7th year she is known as top of the school student in Transfiguration -- due to her ancient magic abilities -- and in Potions -- both a hobby and a source of income to her.

Nobody knows if she ever sleep or eat, as nobody hardly ever sure where she is at at any given moment. Her friends might have an idea but if anyone tags along with Wright when she's seen roaming the castle or its grounds, their whereabouts becomes a mystery, until safely return back from: ingredient harvest / check up on a beast population somewhere in the valley / trailing down remnants of poacher gangs still active in the area / whatever foolhardy adventure she's after while nobody's looking.

Wright is tired and busy individual but she enjoys a good joke, a good butterbeer and a good company.

Daily activities kindergarten student

Ngga terasa udah hari kamis. Setelah anak sakit 2 hari kmarin, eh malah ibunya gantian sakit hiks gabisa anter-jemput anak. Jadilah ayah @sagarmatha13 mengorbankan waktunya, 2 harian ini emg lagi outing kerjanya, kemarin workshop tadi meeting diluar mayanlah agak fleksibel waktunya. Pagi2 pergi anter, aku titip pesen ke ayahnya tolong koordinasi sama bu gurunya kalo nanti yg jemput ayahnya soalnya kan biasanya ibunya. Udah tuh ternyata blgnya ke bu guru 2 yg aku belom tau no. WA nya. Pas waktu pulang, ayahnya telat jemput suruh aku WA bu wali kelas duh! Koordinasi lah buru2 WA bu wali kelas bbrp menit sebelum bel. Dan betulan anaknya nunggu ayahnya sampe 15 menitan. Tp anaknya udah di sounding kalo ayahnya yg bakal jemput krn dia tau ibunya lg sakit ya takutnya lupa malah nyari2 aku. Alhamdulillah aja aman lah dah ktemu ayahnya..

Kalo tiap ditanya tadi sekolah ngapain aja, nemo tuh kadang bisa jawab kadang males jawab cuma blg "hemm apa ya, gatau!" hadeeeh. Kudu dipancing2 atau gosah ditanya suka cerita sendiri. Atau ngga ya report foto2 aja dari bu wali kelas

Did you know that technically in the modern AU, iris would be addressed as Dr. Iris Vanserra because she’s a physical therapist! Since she’s a PT, she would do a doctoral physical therapist program (which all PT’s are required to complete and is 3 years, like going to med school to be an MD) and then there’s the option of doing a residency or fellowship! I just thought that was really cool! Iris would be a Dr but not a physician (like a PHD), imagine her introducing herself as Dr. Iris Vanserra!

  Building the Cyber Ecosystem in Lancashire

In an effort to shape, support, and promote the cyber ecosystem in the region, the Lancashire Cyber Partnership is set to become a driving force. The National Cyber Force (NCF), a collaborative venture between Defence and Intelligence, will lead this transformative initiative, fostering collaboration with academic institutions and industry partners.   New Home for NCF in Samlesbury by 2025 The National Cyber Force is preparing to open its new headquarters in Samlesbury by 2025. This strategic move is not only aimed at strengthening the cyber landscape but also holds the potential to generate employment opportunities in the region. Focusing on technology and digital supply chains, this initiative aims to enhance and support the burgeoning North West Cyber Corridor.

Diverse Partnerships for a Strong Foundation

Partners in the Lancashire Cyber Partnership include the Lancashire County Council, the Lancashire Enterprise Partnership, the University of Central Lancashire, Lancaster University, and BAE Systems. This diverse collaboration was unveiled at the inaugural Lancashire Cyber Festival, where delegates engaged in discussions and workshops focused on elevating the county’s high-value, high-skilled, and inclusive cyber economy.   Fostering Cyber Interest Amongst Youth To showcase the dynamic career opportunities within the area, local primary school and college pupils participated in cyber-themed puzzles. College and university students, in turn, competed against the clock in a high-tech cyber escape room. Furthermore, students had the unique opportunity to interact with Defence leaders, including Lieutenant General Tom Copinger-Symes, Claire Fry, and Air Vice-Marshal Tim Neal-Hopes, gaining insights into their career journeys.

This alignment is crucial in achieving the strategic objectives outlined in the government's approach to cybersecurity.
