For those who think I've given up on my Flying Graysons and Batman everyone lives!au, I promise it still circles my brain every other day. Which is a long preamble to my HC that Looking at Me by Sabrina Carpenter is a Mary Grayson song.
RETRO REVIEW - JOHN DIES AT THE END and Other Stuff (SPOILERS)
Figure 1 – John (Rob Mayes) and David (Chase Williamson)
There are so many genre (and near-genre) movies coming out every year that it’s easy to miss a good one. That’s my excuse for missing 2013’s John Dies at the End, from a book by Jason Pargin writing as David Wong. Pargin/Wong also wrote the screenplay with director Don Coscarelli. Anyway, I missed it, and I think it might end up being one…

July 1983 to October 1986. In 1983, DC lured Doug Moench away from Marvel and books like MASTER OF KUNG FU and MOON KNIGHT to take over BATMAN and DETECTIVE COMICS under the editorship of Len Wein. Their run, which lasted 40 months, was the final phase of the Bronze Age Batman continuity; although it continued for some months after the end of CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS, everything up to DETECTIVE COMICS #566 and BATMAN #400 is functionally part of pre-Crisis continuity, in particular most anything to do with Jason Todd becoming the second Robin. (Jason debuted during the end of Gerry Conway's run in early 1983, but it was Moench and Wein who oversaw Jason's actually becoming Robin.)
From 1981 to 1986, there was a tight continuity between BATMAN and DETECTIVE COMICS: a story begun in one book would continue in the other two weeks later. This was something new for Batman; there had been occasional multi-issue storylines for years, and Steve Englehart and Len Wein had introduced a certain amount of Marvel-style continuity in the late '70s, but having around 40 story pages per month allowed more room for character-focused stories, supporting characters, and subplots. When Doug Moench arrived, a central focus was on leading up to Jason Todd becoming Robin, but there were also numerous other major and minor subplots, from Alfred's attempts to connect with his adult daughter, Julia Remarque (introduced by Conway in 1981), to Gotham's messy city politics and power struggles in the underworld.
In MASTER OF KUNG FU, Moench's signature storytelling preoccupation had been "kinky weirdos hurting each other's feelings," and his initial run on the Bat-books also featured a series of messy, sometimes bloody romantic triangles, the most important of which involved Batman; the now-reformed Catwoman; Nocturna (Natalia Knight), a pretentious Goth burglar who attempted to adopt Jason Todd; and Nocturna's adoptive brother Anton, who became a cat burglar out of deranged obsession with Natalia and later tried to kill her so no one else could have her. It was all very grandiose and inevitably somewhat florid, but then expecting gritty, understated realism from a comic book about a man who fights crime dressed as a bat is itself pretty silly.
The strongest story in this run actually has little to do with that soap opera: "What Price the Prize?" in BATMAN #372, is an intelligent, grounded drama about an up-and-coming young Irish boxer maneuvering for a bout with a Black champion obviously inspired by Muhammad Ali, featuring some of Don Newton's finest Batman art; the conclusion in DETECTIVE #539 isn't quite as sharp, but is still one of Moench's best. Other highlights include a clash with Catman (BATMAN #371/DETECTIVE #538) in which Thomas Blake's determined belief in the magical power of his costume nearly gets both him and Batman killed over and over; a wistful story about the private life and hidden depths of boorish Harvey Bullock (DETECTIVE #549); a delightful one-shot (BATMAN #383) in which Batman repeatedly tries and fails to get some sleep; the debut of Black Mask (BATMAN #385–386 and DETECTIVE #553); a comedic tale of Batman and Catwoman on an actual date, in costume (BATMAN #392); and a distinctly '80s-Bondian espionage adventure reuniting Moench and artist Paul Gulacy (BATMAN #393–394).
Artistically, the run got off to a good start with Don Newton on BATMAN (inked by Alfredo Alcala) and Gene Colan on DETECTIVE (generally inked by Bob Smith). Newton's departure in 1984 hurt, leading to a period of artistic musical chairs and some really bad early Pat Broderick art, followed by Tom Mandrake taking over BATMAN. Mandrake gets a bad rap in some quarters, mostly because his style is looser (and about two steps further in the direction of Gene Colan) than many comics fans care to tolerate, but his work here is mostly fine, and certainly an improvement over Broderick's. The Annual has some very nice early Denys Cowan pencils, inked by Alcala, and BATMAN #400 is an all-star extravaganza art-wise.
Maddeningly, DC has never properly reprinted a lot of this material, which I think is badly overdue. If it's not as epochal as some more familiar periods both before and after, the median level of quality is pretty decent (and certainly no worse than the 1987–1991 period, which has now been reprinted in its entirety); its emphasis on characterization wouldn't be matched again in the Batman titles for many years. Denny O'Neil supposedly hated much of what Moench had done (Moench has said O'Neil especially loathed Nocturna, whom he flatly refused to revive in any form), but Denny is dead now, and in any case, his Batman stories include their share of stinkers as well as gems. I don't know that DC has any kind of real reprint strategy anymore, but I hope they won't wait until Doug Moench is dead to properly remaster and collect these issues. Doing them all (BATMAN #360–400 and Annual #10, DETECTIVE #527–567) in something akin to Marvel's Epic Collection format would probably take four volumes — there's around 1,800 pages of material, more if you include Moench's Superman/Batman stories from WORLD'S FINEST — but why not?
Much like I did with Beto, I'll try to make a timeline of Ragua's life. It's in Earth years, but her species ages differently and much of her life is spent in virtual paradises/relativist travel, so the dates here are very approximate:
0: Is born in one of the paradise hatchery worlds of the Irruita (now called Precursor) civilization
1-15: Learns to swim, talk and all that (she did NOT eat her siblings at this time how dare you imply that's RUDE)
23: her parents "get bored of her" and she's raised by her grandparents in a rural world
23-54: Mostly gaming and herding fish and making shrimp egg honey
54: goes into her first galactic cruise with her girlfriend, she has a short honeymoon relationship with her (about 25 years max)
75-97: (plays gacha games):
98: reconciles with her parents for a brief time, works as a retainer in the Irruita celestial bureaucracy, quickly resigns
120: (plays gacha games)
130: Tries a singer career, goes kinda well
130-170: her "sex drugs and rock n' roll era" according to her (exact ratio unknown)
168: Gets bored of fame, might have blown up a moon in her farewell concert
170-210: (plays gacha games)
210-260: her second galactic cruise, has some short relationships but mostly goes sightseeing and such
270: (plays gacha games. some lady on Earth is inventing agriculture at this time, don't pay much attention to it)
295: goes into her third galactic cruise, this time alone
320: tries a contemplative pilgrimage to the center of the galaxy. Just kidding. (plays gacha games)
327: has a short fling with her girlfriend again (about 10 years)
340: nostalgic about her childhood, decides to become a retro game streamer/idol.
353: Reaches a thousand subscribers
360s: the retro fashion in this era gets her more popular
370s: she has about two billion subscribers now, making her a minor celebrity
381: she gets dared by her chat to wait for the release of a new game in relativistic travel, she takes the bet and goes into animated suspension.
The spaceship fails, sending her into relativistic travel for thousands of light years.
The Precursor civilization dissappears mysteriously.
The enterity of human recorded history happens
After the Machine War, modern galactic civilization emerges
381: spaceship deaccelerates into regular speed again, only a couple of months of internal time has passed, millenia have gone by outside.
386: discovered, still in suspended animation, by antiquities collectors who might be working for more secretive powers
387: Awakened by Beto and Suisini in a regular transport mission. After a short fight with the grave robbers, they agree to shelter her. She joins the tripulation of the Mastropiero

🔪 ⇢ what's the weirdest topic you researched for a writing project?
Oh, lord, I don't remember. Define parameters for "weird." I remember looking up where in the Michigan state code I might be able to slot in regulations pertaining to supers, does that count? But also, SO much biology shit lmao. And also how long would it take for the water cycle to stop on Earth if Earth suddenly lost all sunlight, but unfortunately I could not figure that one out, there is too much calculus involved there for me. Alas. I've decided it's like, two months. Not like anybody else knows either!

Superman Family #214 "The Strange Revenge of Lena Luthor"
Marv Wolfman
DC Comics Presents Annual #1
Misc:
Heroes Against Hunger - Various Writers
I was actually rather surprised by some of this. Finding out that Leo Dorfman wrote the Action Comics #363-365 "Leper from Krypton" arc, indicates he's actually been quite influential on Mark Waid, in my opinion. (And I definitely think that Cary Bates in particular influenced Grant Morrison. Bates' stuff ranges in quality a little, but the higher end stuff is fantastic.) I also didn't remember that it was Siegel who introduced Lena, and I was shocked to find out he co-wrote that mad Lex/Lois romance in earth-64.
And I didn't list every story, obviously. I just tracked down ones that were memorable to me for one reason or another.
Pretty good answers :) got some more if that’s ok?
1: who’s the strongest & weakest in omega?
2: how long have they been a team?
3: for Christmas, what’s the best gift they ever gotten?
4: who puts the Star on top of the tree when with their own families?
5: what’s their favorite Christmas movies?
6: what’s their favorite thing to do during the winter?
Ooooo
1. In terms of powers, Jon’s strongest and Lian/Damian weakest.
Interms of ABILITY I’d actually put Jon at the weakest. I think he relies on his powers too much to make up for any lack of skill, compared to Damian or Lian, who are able to keep up with their powered friends, or Mar’i, who was raised around the Batfam and can fight with or without her powers.
In terms of intelligence, the twins at the top with a combined IQ of 386. Colin is only at the bottom compared to the others, but don’t let that fool you. He’s the smartest when it comes to knowing the streets.
Basically, they’re all the best in one area and the weakest in another.
2. They formed when Lian (the oldest) was 13, and Mar’i (the Youngest) was almost 12, so factor that in when reading any of my fics
3. Oooooo
Milagro—Mar’i met her fashion idol at a gala (wearing one of Milagro’s designs) and managed to get her a summer internship with her. Milagro kissed Mar’i in her excitement 😂
Irey/Jai—light sabers. Like the really high tech ones. They’ll wear their Hanboks and act like they’re in a KDrama
Colin—first year they were a team, all their parents planned a surprise for him. His teammates got him fun presents, but the parents? The parents helped him get his friends nice presents, then got him furniture and clothes that were all brand new. Just for him. He hugged each of them and kept crying because he wasn’t expecting the love.
Damian—A little before Christmas (I made his birthday the same as mine, December 10th) but his favorite gift was adoption papers from Selina
Lian—Singing with her dad, after getting a new song book and guitar. It made her feel really safe and close with him
Jon— a copy of his favorite Ma Recipes. She wrote them each by hand for him and gave it with a kiss
Mar’i—she found Kor’i’s old stocking the first year on earth. Dick hung it up and, on Christmas morning, it was filled with all Kor’i’s favorite things….including the perfume she always wore. Mar’i was so excited
4. Ooo colin is always invited to everyone house and has turned into Abuse to put the star on a tree
Mar’i, again first year, didn’t fully understand when they said “Star goes on top” so she flew to the top. Usually it switches up every year between all the bat kids. Damian helps Bruce set up and light the menorah
Milagro usually puts the star on top, with Jaime lifting her.
Lian and Roy absolutely, without a question in my mind, fire an arrow into the ceiling with the star hanging over the tree
Irey and Jai also switch up
For Jon’s family, it’s usually Ma
5. Every year, without fail, they watch Klaus on Netflix. Omega also has one day they turn in Hallmark movies and just….exist.
6. Oooo depends.
Milagro (Texas girl through and through) despises the cold. She spends most her days inside knitting or embroidering. Damian is usually with her if he’s not training. He also learned to knit thanks to her and they enjoy just watching telanovelas together.
Mar’i is fascinated by the snow so she’s usually out and about. Jon takes her ice skating every year (which she’s awful at but he’s actually really good)
The twins, Lian, and Colin? Out side having snowball fights.
There has been a snowball fight amongst all omega while their families were around. Full powers, complete chaos, and the most fun they’ve ever had
After my most recent reread of ntn, I realized that Varun the Eater doesn’t just start acting up for dramatic purposes (though it does force the plot along wonderfully) near the end of the book. I think Varun is answering a call for help from Alecto. On pg. 338, when Nona is pretending to be Harrow and Ianthe gets suspicious, “Nona simply made her month go as the Captain’s had gone—she could remember the movement, it was easy—and she screamed, ‘Help! Help! Help!’ for want of anything better to say.” Immediately after the scream, she coughs up saltwater, which to me is meant to indicate she channeled Alecto’s rage in the scream. This was the trigger for Varun to start parascoping. On pg. 380, thunder starts that is described as “like something breaking a far-off sound barrier” and by the time Nona has finished talking to Honesty and Hot Sauce about the convoy, “the thunder cracks had increased tenfold” (386). When the BOE crew realizes that Varun has sent the first wave of heralds (389), they can’t seem to figure out what triggered the first wave. Yet when Nona is talking to Varun through the Captain on top of the truck, they say, “All for nothing—you asked for help—you asked . . . and all for nothing, only pain. You asked . . . I gave you blood for blood” (392). Now other people smarter than me have made posts about how this exchange between Varun (via the Captain) and Nona is Varun talking to Alecto so I’m not going to into all that here. But it stood out to me that Varun seems to be answering a call from Alecto, maybe an hour or so after Nona, Alecto-style, screams for help (the repeated “you asked”). Varun could just be talking about when John killed Earth to become god and make Alecto, but I think the timing is more significant than that. Just another example of Muir’s immensely detailed writing that has me head over heels in love with this series.
Scientists report ‘benchmarks’ for extreme space weather High-energy ‘relativistic’ electrons - so-called “killer” electrons - are a major source of radiation damage to satellites and so understanding their patterns of activity is crucial. Bursts of charged particles and magnetic fields from the Sun can tear open the Earth’s magnetic field, giving rise to geomagnetic storms. During these events the number of killer electrons in the outer radiation belt can increase by orders of magnitude and become a significant space weather hazard. Dr Nigel Meredith of BAS led an international team who analysed 20 years of data from a US GPS satellite to determine the 1 in 10, 1 in 50, and 1 in 100-year event levels. A 1 in 100-year event is an event of a size that will be equalled or exceeded on average once every 100 years. Satellite operators, manufacturers, insurers, and governments need to prepare and mitigate against the risks posed by these electrons. Society is increasingly reliant on satellites for a variety of applications including communication, navigation, Earth observation and defence. As of April 2022, there were 5,465 operational satellites in Earth orbit, and most are exposed to energetic electrons for at least some of their orbit. In 2021, the overall global space economy generated revenues of $386 billion, an increase of four percent compared to the previous year. Dr Nigel Meredith, space weather scientist and lead author of the study says: “The 1 in 100 year event levels reported in this study are important for industry and government. They serve as benchmarks against which to compare other extreme space weather events and to assess the potential impact of an extreme event.” These findings are vitally important to the satellite industry as engineers and operators require realistic estimates of the largest electron fluxes encountered in GPS orbit to prepare for the impacts of these extreme events and to improve the resilience of future satellites. The findings are essential for satellite insurers to help them ensure satellite operators are doing all they can to reduce risk and to evaluate realistic disaster scenarios The difference between the 1 in 10 year and 1 in 100-year event varies depending on the energy of the electrons and the distance from Earth. These differences are largest at the highest energies furthest from the planet, varying between a factor of 3 and 10 for some of the highest electron energies over 35,000 km from the Earth’s surface. Such substantial increases could pose a significant additional risk to satellites operating in this region. Like weather on our planet, space weather can vary greatly over minutes, days, seasons and the 11-year solar cycle. The researchers found that the majority of these killer electron events occurred during the solar cycle’s declining phases — seen twice during the 20-year period they studied — but the largest event was elsewhere, showing that extreme events can happen at any time. Professor Richard Horne, FRS, from BAS and a co-author on the study, says: "The space sector is part of our Critical National Infrastructure. This research will help us assess the resilience of satellites to a severe space weather event." Severe space weather was added to the UK National Risk Register of Civil Emergencies in 2011. The impacts of space weather on satellites can range from momentary interruptions of service to total loss of capabilities. In 2003 a major storm caused 47 satellites to experience anomalies, over 10 to be out of action for more than a day and one was a complete loss. Extreme Relativistic Electron Fluxes in GPS Orbit: Analysis of NS41 BDD-IIR Data by Nigel P. Meredith, Thomas E. Cayton, Michael D. Cayton, Richard B. Horne is published in the journal Space Weather

She’s soaked when he finds her: on her knees in the pouring rain. Her eyes are closed, her pale face turned to the weeping skies. There’s blood in the water that streams down her neck, staining the collars of her robes. Her staff lies broken beside her. The piece of her father’s blanket is gone.
Cullen doesn’t stop until he’s taken to his knee at her side. From here, he can smell it. Ozone. He can taste it in the air around her, feel it spilling from the scorched earth beneath them.
“Amaryllis.” He isn’t sure what to say. There is nothing that could comfort her, now.
He can see the way her skin has split along her chin and up, across her cheek. Her left eye is swollen and black.
He reaches for the elfroot potion at his side and her hand grips his wrist: tight, but not enough to hurt.
“Please.” Her voice is hoarse–a croaking whisper, barely heard over the downpour. She does not open her eyes. “I can’t.”
There is a fury rising within him. He can’t stop. “What happened?”
Her other hand scrambles for purchase, and she tries to grip his chestplate, but her palm slides across its surface. Instead, she falls forward, her hand fisted in the soiled grass. Her other still grips his wrist.
At first, there’s nothing. She is still. Then, her shoulders begin to shake, and out of her mouth spills a harrowing cry.
She lets go of him to pound her fists into the ground, once, and he realizes with horror that she has frozen the mud beneath her–her hands spill fresh blood upon the ice.
“Fuck,” Amaryllis sobs. “Fuck. Fuck! FUCK!”
“Amaryllis.” He pulls her into him quickly, holding her tightly against him though the armor is uncomfortable for them both. With a shaking hand, he pushes the hair out of her eyes, and feels his own heart sink at what he finds. There is an unfathomable sorrow in her gaze. “What happened?”
She doesn’t fight him. Amaryllis lets go. Falls against him. She seems to forget how to breathe for a moment, and then takes in a sharp, hitching gasp of air.
“She’s gone. Ellana’s gone.”
Cullen’s own breath leaves him in a sudden punch.
He curls himself around her, and doesn’t let go.
Hi! Thank you for the list on current supergirl comics! Would you be able to do a similar one for the old ones? I know there's golden age but after that I get a little lost because she's in Superman comics and the legions comics a lot :(
of course! for the action comics issues you’ll have to skip to the second or third story to get to Kara’s part of the comic, it’s always titled “Supergirl”.
Action Comics (1938) #252, 258, 267, 276, 278-282, 285, 295, 309-310, 313, 317-318, 366-368, 372, 374
World’s Finest (1941) #169

Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985) #4-7
Christmas with the Super-heroes (1988) #2 (Kara appears in the last story titled “should auld acquaintance be forgot”)
this is just what i’d personally recommend for her silver/bronze age appearances. theres like three decades worth of comics to get through for kara in pre crisis, so i’ve omitted quite a few while also trying to keep it pretty comprehensive.
if you want guides for her in post crisis or new 52 just let me know!! i'm more than happy to help out <33

The creation of the Universe is based on a harmonic series of numbers such as 72, 144, and 432. The SPEED OF LIGHT is no coincidence, it is the magical speed of 144,000 Nautical Miles Per Second. The rhythm of music recalls the heartbeat which we first heard in the womb and beats naturally at 72 BPM. The human body also has 432,000 “Motor Skill Neurons.” DIVINE INTELLIGENT DESIGN:
Can you hear Mother Earth’s Heartbeat?
The “Heartbeat of Mother Earth” is called the “Schumann Resonance”, our planet beats at 8 cycles per second, this 8 Hz is the fundamental Schumann resonance of vibratory sound. In other words, at 8 Hz one is an operating bio-supercomputer, or working towards “Super Fifth-Dimension Consciousness.” This is a musical revolution that would induce 8 Hz in its beholders and party dancers, could propel mankind into an “Omega Revolution”
8 Hz is the alpha brain wave rhythm in which our parallel processors, or brain bi- hemispheres, are synchronized to spin together equally. The neo-cortex of the brain, 90% unassigned becomes awakened in this synchronization, and one then operates in all brain cell dendrites with the maximum information flow possible on that scale. "Ordinary" awareness brain waves ranges from 14-40 Hz. Here one is operating only in some brain cell dendrites, and predominantly with the left brain as the centre of activity, where in- formation flow is billions of times slighter (like using an old PC 386 compared to a parallel process Pentium 4, or an old Mac Performance, compared to a Parallel processing G5). Light travels about a foot in a nanosecond (billionth of a second), fast enough to circle the Earth seven to eight times in one second. Now that’s fast folks! This is the original connection of sacred geometry, astronomy and sacred energy sites used in music theory. It follows the golden symmetry (PHI Ø) of the human bodies architecture and the cosmos.
