Since I haven't seen anyone bring this up yet.
The test machine all of these programs are running on seems to be causing illness in the people that work on them/interact with them very very very directly, leading to their death or complete deterioration. Specifically siting memory loss.
This would explain why Shelby experiences such intense memory issues and blackouts during the series. It would explain why they don't remember any of their time at Eckva despite clearly having worked there and having a lot of knowledge about their situation. It would also explain their strange memory lapses they seem to be experiencing each time we see them enter a log into the machine, which we actually see them do quite a lot.
That's Andrew logging into the machine, vs Shelby logging into the machine. They only begin logging into the machine after having the blot planted in their head, which unlocked their memories that went missing after working on the test machine. The pills they were on likely existed to keep those memories deeply repressed, to frame them as mentally ill, in the same way Jeremy Whale, Andrew Raymond, and Danielle Scott were. The blot does the reverse. It keeps them awake and aware.
