Dumb shipwreck facts because I need to hyperfixate for a moment:
The only Olympic-class (Britannic, Titanic, and Olympic) ship that was actually unsinkable was the Olympic. Olympic took full advantage of this and became the only merchant vessel in WWI on record to sink an enemy vessel (it didn’t discriminate, either; Olympic actually sank two vessels during its service, one of which was a friendly lightship during peacetime).
It took 150 years to discover what happened to the infamous Lost Franklin Expedition because the English were too racist to ask the natives. The Canadians, meanwhile, found the wreck of one of their ships, HMS Terror, in a fraction of the time by asking an Inuit hunter named Sammy Kogvik for help.
There are at least two wrecks in Lake Erie that we may never find because the lakebed quite literally swallowed them.
On a related note, Lake Erie might have the highest concentration of shipwrecks of any body of water in the world.
Lake Superior is actually the least lethal Great Lake, despite its reputation, but over half of its wrecks are located around Whitefish Point, most notably the Edmund Fitzgerald.
The Bermuda Triangle doesn’t actually have a very high disappearance or wreck rate. It’s considered weird because the gulf stream carries any wrecks and debris out of the search area, making it that much harder to find any remains.
There’s a disturbing tendency for ships, particularly freighters, to not only split in half while they sink, but for the back half (the stern) to keep going, sometimes for miles. The most notable case of this would be the SS Pendleton, an oil freighter that wrecked off the coast of Massachusetts; the rescue of the crew on its stern is considered to be one of the most daring Coast Guard rescues ever pulled off.
Most ships built before 1950 were made with subprime or low-grade metal, which is believed to be part of the reason why they split in half so often. This metal turned brittle in colder water; guess where most of these wrecks were. Some wrecks believed to have fallen victim to this include the Titanic, the aforementioned Pendleton, the Carl D. Bradley, and the Daniel J. Morrell.
An Arctic cruise ship took on a Venezuelan patrol boat and won. Said patrol boat was trying to force the cruise ship, the Resolute, to come ashore. Ships create depressions in the water (you most often see this in the “wake”) called displacement, and it’s generally believed the patrol boat underestimated the strength of the Resolute’s displacement and was sucked into its path, ending up crushed by Resolute’s icebreaker-grade hull.
While we can be reasonably certain what sank the Marquette & Bessemer No. 2 (it was a train ferry with an open back and had previously had a near-accident when a wave slammed directly into the opening, almost flooding it), what we don’t know is what happened before and after. One of its lifeboats was found with nine bodies and the clothing of a tenth. The ship’s steward was found armed with two knives and a meat cleaver, and the captain’s body was found some time later with slash wounds. It’s agreed that the steward killed him, but why remains a mystery.
Moby Dick was based on the sinking of the Essex, a whaling ship that was rammed and sunk by its own prey. The crew resorted to cannibalism to survive; ironically, they would’ve been rescued sooner had they not avoided a nearby island chain for fear of cannibal tribes.
Don’t read about the sinking of the Estonia. Just...don’t. It’s not pleasant. For some hint of how awful it was, despite being reasonably close to the surface no one was ever able to get all the bodies out because of the sheer number of them.
On a much lighter note, the Swedish Navy in the 1700s poured thousands of kroner into building a mighty flagship for their navy, the Vasa...only for the Vasa to sink less than 300 yards into its maiden voyage. Turns out they gave it too many guns, making it too top-heavy, and it capsized.
The Canadian freighter Bannockburn disappeared in a storm in 1902. Almost all of its crew were in their late teens and early 20s; the youngest was 16. Companies would hire younger, less experienced men to work aboard their ships because they were cheaper. The Bannockburn has never been found.
Speaking of Lake Superior shipwrecks, there’s a saying that “Lake Superior never gives up her dead”. It’s not wrong; the temperatures at the bottom are cold enough to halt the decaying process, which prevents the bodies from rising to the surface. The most notable instance of this is Old Whitey, the nickname for a body found in the engine room of the Kamloops who has never been identified. This is also the reason no one is allowed to dive to the Edmund Fitzgerald; the crew’s bodies are still aboard the wreck, and it’s considered disrespectful at best to dive to a place that for all intents and purposes is a graveyard.
It took over 100 years and numerous deaths from scurvy for anyone to realize that eating raw meat can prevent it. They discovered this on a Belgian arctic expedition where one of the crewmen, drawing on past experience, somehow managed to convince the rest of the crew to eat raw penguin, rapidly decreasing the number and severity of scurvy cases onboard.
To end this on a lighter note, the saying “Batten down the hatches” is an actual maritime phrase; hatches are openings in the ship’s deck used to bring cargo inside and, on older ships, allow passengers and crew on deck. Hatches let enormous amounts of water into the ship in bad weather, and are often “battened down” (covered up) to prevent water from getting in. It will probably not surprise you to learn that not battening down the hatches or not doing it properly has caused its fair share of wrecks; notably, it’s believed that the Cyprus, an ore carrier that was said to be leaving a red trail in its wake the day before it capsized, was leaving said trail because its hatches were improperly sealed; water was getting into the hold, mixing with the cargo of iron ore, and then being pumped out, hence the red wake.

my day was : eating delicious strawberries, reading in the sun on our balcony, taking a walk with @pia-writes-things and eating ice creams (it's 26°C lol), going to the fair with my sister and buying more strawberries.
bliss.

Sometimes I sit and argue/think "yeah but Neil, Kevin and Andrew would be famous by now" when I read fics or even just think about post-canon. (esp with court.)
then I remember that, I as a human being, know like.... 4 Olympic athlete's names total. over all sports. so like, they would but they really wouldn't be.

Also (this is NOT me calling her or anyone dumb lemme be clear) the educational neglect that’s practically encouraged by elite gymnastics as a subculture is absolutely conducive to this. Especially the ones who don’t end up doing NCAA. You’re churning out dozens of undereducated young adults, with awful social skills vis-à-vis their normie peers, who are intense and one-track-minded and have no practical work force skills or reasonably “hirable” credentials, and you’ve encouraged them to make gymnastics their one and only medium of identity and self expression, and one day they aren’t gymnasts anymore and they have to get a big girl job and navigate the adult world and that’s like figuratively driving them off a cliff into the ocean below at 100mph. It’s a miracle that ANY of them managed to become relatively well adjusted adults honestly...

Skimblegus Family Time--Tumble takes after Asparagus more and more the older he gets, but Teazer takes after Skimble a lot more than people give her credit for. They're both these very bright, clever, and relentlessly cheerful cats who try to put a brave face on things and hide when they're not at their best. But when they crash, they crash hard; it became a bittersweet source of reconnection after she was free of Macavity, especially since Teazer didn't realize her dad ever had bad days. She can basically only stand to be around her dads, Tumble, and Mungojerrie on particularly awful days, and Skimble's learned more from Asparagus about how not to just pack those emotions away to worry about later. Plus, you know she's feeling better when she and Tumble can start picking at each other again.

I love it so much, and I love this little family <3
#Rumpleteazer#Skimbleshanks#Asparagus#Tumblebrutus#other headcanons#jellicles ask because jellicles dare#theimpossiblescheme#and of course because you and i share the braincell i had a very similar vein of thought#that teazer got told all the time how much like her father she was and she would scoff and do everything in her power to deny that#and she'd especially hate it when mungojerrie would say it because he usually did when he was annoyed with her and they were arguing#which became more frequent when they were with macavity#and skimble was so good at pretending everything was alright he turned it into an olympic sport#he broke down very rarely and when he *did* it was a sight#i also think he and teazer are a lot alike in that they will say things before thinking them through#particularly during high stress moments - and they can be downright nasty and say things they don't really mean#before their brains catch up to their mouths because they operate so *quickly* and so on the line with their immediate feelings#skimble has learned to tone it down over the years - teazer is still young and sometimes her mouth is too big#and of course when even tumble was hesitantly pushing his rope toy towards her and asking if maybe she wanted to play#even though they were way too old at the time after teazer came back you *knew* she was in a bad way#and he feels uneasy and stays relatively in her company (and his dads can sense that he feels bad but doesn't know what to do)#basically begging her to call him names or stick bugs in his ears or a worm in his bed or *something* because whoever this queen is#she isn't his step-sister and he doesn't like it#anyway many thoughts head scrambled - i love them so much thank you <3

Yeah whatever but you're still my goat 🐐 either way Gregor 😌
#article headline is about kraft's wins for the non germans#anyway so yeah i guess they brought that up and it seems the goat debate has started again#i find it mostly really unnecessary and stupid also how it's discussed some people just can’t accept someone's achievements ...#because they don't like them#but yeah for me the goat is Gregor i mean obv he's my fave but like i think the number of victories is most important#like it shows how many times you were the best in a competition and that's the best metric in sports#like podiums are nice and i respect that kraft has more podiums but winning is what a sport is all about in the end#for me wins will always count way more#but olympic and championship medals is what many say#while they are great ofc especially in a sport like ski jumping with outside influences like wind luck is a big factor#and being there that specific day who is in form#in fact there are quite a few surprise winners who never won anything else afterwards in ski jumping like when Diethard won 4ht#so it really doesn't mean that much compared#you can't get lucky winning 53 competitions however :))#and that gregor only has 2 cristal balls is just incredibly unlucky with the number of wins he has#but anyway for me the goat is the one with the most wins and that is gregor#if kraft gets more one day i will acknowledge that but i still doubt it#altough it has become a possibility#i just really hope not i would hate it sorry 😅 ofc because gregor is my fave and i want him to be the best forever#but also bc i don't rly like kraft (partly for silly reasons some better than others anyways) so that suck even more 😅#but in my heart gregor will always be the goat forever my goat 🥹👑❤️#i do respect kraft's accomplishments tho it's quite impressive#(pls don't hate me haha i know saying not liking kraft is not well taken here lol)

"Omg I can't stand when people try to use the intersectional feminist argument to include men. Like when they ask if a homeless man can be misogynistic to a rich woman. I'm just worried for the (poor helpless weak females) homeless women AROUND him!!"
So you just suck at intersectional feminism. Okay.
#Jean rambles#The bioessentialism. The genderessentialism. Y'all are so close to getting the point#Like. Sure okay let's look at a homeless encampment that has men and women (and for the sake of argument - no genderqueer people of any kind#On a purely gender basis yeah sure there are risks for misogyny#But what about the racial aspects of the encampment. What about the religious aspects. Hell what about the economic aspects#What about disability - physical or otherwise - aspects. What about age aspects. What about family aspects.#There are SO many goddamn aspects to look at in just this one hypothetical homeless encampment#That can determine and influence how people there interact with each other#Especially given outside influences such as police and civilians#If you only focus on the most cis-centric gender binary perspective of this hypothetical homeless encampment#Then you just suck at intersectional feminism. I'm sorry but you do. You just suck at it#Get better and do better before thinking you can pull a seat up to this table#And yeah. Obviously these different aspects can fall on the women too#A homeless muslim woman is highly likely to experience a tougher time than a homeless white christian man#But then the homeless latino man with a physical disability is highly likely to have a tougher time than a homeless white woman with-#No disability at all#It's not about who is more oppressed or any of that shit#It's looking at all the pieces that make up a whole and seeing the issues that can come from some of those pieces#One of the biggest points of intersectional feminism is to not make the oppression olympics#It's to give a voice and a name to the tool that's being used to beat countless of us into the dirt

Hi love, just checking in on you. I’m sorry about the rude people in your asks. As far as the Obi and Little One thing goes, I think it’s perfectly fine as long as Little One isn’t a child during the romantic era of the relationship. And as for the antisemitics they can all just fuck off. Praying for you, Israel and the innocent Palestinians ❤️ 🙏🏼
thank you so much! I was literally just taking to one of my friends about this, asking “hey did you think HoM had any predatorial or grooming undertones??” And he literally said “girl nah she loved him forever and he didn’t even think that way until she was a full blown adult.” And honestly i just think that they wanted something to be mad at me for. I actually think i know exactly who it was, based on a series of the exact same comments as i had seen while posting HoM… and i think she’s like… 15 (most antisemites these days are just brainwashed teenagers so, figures)
anyways thank you for your thoughts and prayers, I’m clinging to hope that when this is all over the radical leftist movement of disguised antisemitism will dissolve and those people can go back to hating something else.
