Pinkerton appreciation

HELLO CHATTERS!!!

Today i did what i do on almost a weekly basis, which is to listen to pinkerton. i was in a good mood listening to this very awesome album... UNTIL! i noticed something that somewhat upset me not really but its really interesting.

you see back in the 90s pinkerton wasn't loved as much as blue album because it's messy dark and emo and not silly fun power pop like blue. it wasn't till many years later that pinkerton the the love and appreciation it deserved. Although it isn't nearly as popular as blue, green, or even make believe (really only because of Beverly hills), it is still very loved by weezer fans now.

Today while looking through the deluxe version i realized that "I just through out the love of my dreams" is more popular than any of the songs on the normal non deluxe album. Now don't get me wrong its a really good song (although this cover of the song is kinda better imo :3) and i do really enjoy it, i do feel like its a repeat in history.

now if you don't know what i mean by this repeat in history, i will shift the attention for a short moment to another band, PAVEMENT!!!

one side note i think is funny is that back when weezer started, people called them cheesy pavement rip-offs... just something i remembered!

pavement is an awesome band and they will get another post out of me at some point of me writing on this tumblr blog, but in the mean time... Pavement has always been relatively popular in indie rock circles, but nothing exceeds the popularity they got when harness your hopes blew up like crazy on tiktok, making it their most popular song on streaming services by a very large margin. AND Just like i just threw out the love of my dreams, harness your hopes is also a B-side that randomly got popular from social media.

Don't get me wrong I'm not upset at all, to be honest i don't care that much like it really isn't that deep, i just think its interesting how common this is, where a song from an older band gets big thanks to social media, more specifically tiktok.

The only thing i do wish is that people listened to more of the bands music rather than just listen to the one song they know, but then again i just realized not everyone is as obsessed with music as i am lol.

Back to pinkerton

i LOVE pinkerton, i def like it more than blue album, which isn't much of a hot take since the weezer fandom has been split on which album is better for prolly 2 decades at this point. For me the album is just more up with the kinda music i listen to, while being very different at the same time. the way the album starts with the synth, and you automatically hear the raw and underproduced sound this album has.

aside from the sound, i just personally kinda relate to some of the songs, maybe not the weird parts... but def many of the bit more normal ones.

With tired of sex, I have definitely grown tired of having relationships with people where there's no actual relationship or connection at all. for a long time i really didn't know who i am (weezer reference).

getchoo is hard for me to analyze or related it to anything so i will skip that one (good song tho)

no other one hit pretty hard home for me. i've been in pretty shitty relationships with people who treat me like shit, hence the shittiness, and for some reason i didn't leave because i didn't think i could do any better and that nobody knows me like her, that we're all we got and we don't wanna be alone (weezer reference).

why bother? is me when I'm scared to make relationships and friendships with basically anyone because of my fear that whoever i talk to will eventually not like me and abandon me, to where in my head i will think "why bother? its gonna hurt me. it's gonna kill when they desert me. It's already happened to me twice before. it wont happen to me anymore." (weezer reference)

i only semi relate to across the sea because i've e-dated as a young child on discord.... next song (still a good song)

the good life is me too because i used to be really cool and leave my house a lot and play shows and have lots of friends and just do things that aren't me sitting at home doing nothing being a pig and a dog (weezer reference). it is def time i got back to the good life (weezer reference) But to be fair i don't really want to go back to that time i just wanna be a normal person again.

i don't really relate to el scorcho much but its still an awesome song.

pink triangle is me because I've dated girls who turned out to be a lesbian but trust me i didn't turn them, they were already lesbian before we started dating i don't know why they started dating me maybe because I'm not very masculine so they thought it would be fine. (note that i didn't know they were lesbian till after we would break up)

i put falling for you in a mixtape i made my ex. whenever i would hear that song i would think of her because its how i felt about her. i was afraid of falling for her, but in the end i just wanted to settle down with her (weezer reference)

I don't relate to butterfly either but it is a really really good song

as you can see i really like pinkerton and relate to it very much. it is prolly one of my favorite albums of all time no doubt

i love winston i love when he’s like 

okay wait i’m having all these thoughts at once. i’m assuming taylor let winston name the Area for their rendezvous since they were hiring the quants in secret but it’s funny he’s just like hey meet me after math meetup but also okay the scene is funny because yknow taylor walks in and it’s just winston standing there in the middle of the room all Ready with his first line even prepared like “you ever done math meetup?” and then i imagined math meetup to just be an outright brawl because if the next beat was him picking up a chair to go into melee mode it’d work

sdghjfds and then taylor saying “is that what this is?” like imagine winston just going “no”

i love winston he goes off about his life crisis and depression and then taylors like okay let me just go ahead and cut in here. what else did winston have in this speech about how he promises he is chastened by self-loathing now

and yes this was the thing i was originally going to say i’m just in that classic “omg i am On your wavelength so hard rn winnie” when he says “well i...promise to try. but as far as successfully not being a dick, i can’t absolutely guarantee it. like i can my coding.”

and every time i’m like oh my god winston good job....what a measured, honest, genuinely helpful response. truly in this moment you’re showing taylor that you can be great at this if they give you a shot. amazing!! perfect!!!! poetry!!!!!! ilu

and then taylor gives them the Reprimanding Look and says the “there you go, [backsliding into being a dick] again” and even now that i Know that’s what happens in the scene i don’t #get it lol i can only Comprehend winston’s social perspective there lmao........in the furthest stretch i’m like okay was it just the “i can guarantee my coding” bit? but i’m kidding myself nah i still can’t see that or any other part as Obviously Rude Or Annoying or whatever like no it just all completely makes sense to me and really solid. i will never Get It

but the real moral i get out of all of this is that i think it’s great whenever they interact b/c they’re both mayhaps socially “”offputting”” and Unusual in different ways and i like that they seem to find it fairly easy to interact with each other....taylor keeps like just providing these subtle prompts to guide him whenever they’re talking which, literally every time winston appears he’s interacting with taylor so, yeah they’re using these small cues to send this extra layer of communication to winston about what they’d like him to do right in this moment. and meanwhile winston already in his second meeting imo i always interpret that as him trying to act a lot more taylor-esque in his second attempt, and then, yknow, he’s just like, he gets warningly told by taylor “don’t annoy anybody” and then he annoys his coworkers so hard they both just leave and winston, bless him, just Stays and keeps working until taylor shows up and then he’s like heyyyy....whats up lol. and what’s Gold is that taylor is clearly combining both their own previous phrasing and winston’s previous phrasing to say “you backslid into being a dick >:|” and winston’s just like Fine Yes Big Time sigh....i figure he stands up to potentially anticipate being fired lol but also possibly just cuz it’s a bit weird not to anyways seeing as its just them.....but the point is that at no point in any of his interactions with taylor does winston act like he’s intimidated or offput by them......he Defers to them for sure but like, yknow doesn’t act like anything they do when they’re just being how they’re always being is like, wow taylor is weird and this is something that bothers me at all

and like i mentioned with taylor basically quoting winston some number of days later, they’re also going along with his yngwie malmsteen metaphor even if they just initially shoot it down with that “sad.” lol....but anyways it’s evident that like, taylor is taking in this info about winston but not in a “winston you suck and i want to give you an extremely detailed report on why i think so” way but instead in a “i’m paying attention to you and retaining info about you and i’m using what i learn in the way we interact so we can get more on the same page communicatively. like taylor’s not just asking winston to kind of be conscious and rein himself in sometimes, they’re also Asking him by using the way he phrases things himself and visual cues he can parse....they’re making this effort to make things easier for him basically, aka meeting winston at this midway point where they’re both trying to be aware of and employ the other’s particular social/communication style so that said socializing/communicating just Works Better. like, it’s nice because taylor doesn’t “””””have””””” to devote the least amt of consideration to making adjustments for winston’s funky little social approach, but they do. and winston is always making an effort to watch for taylor’s cues and listens when they’re sent, and taylor is making the effort to send those cues. i just think they’re neat

and the ways in which they’re gonna be seen maybe by the average rando who’s unused to them as socially Weird / Difficult / Etc and the ways this can present problems for either of them is natch different from them both, but i think it’s also neat how even tho (weird/difficult) + (weird/difficult) might seem like it should = extra deluxe weird and difficult, really they just seem to have figured out how to interact with each other fairly well and done so fairly quickly/easily...they #get it when they’re talking...that Dynamic....which is also extra fun because of the ways that winston clearly contrasts with taylor, and that’s always going to be fun, especially when they’re actually working together so they’re gonna want to try to understand each other / be on the same page / agree / get along / etc etc.....love to see the outwardly real different characters just work well together and not be bothered

also will keeps mentioning he’s in more episodes of billions (not in those exact words but) and sounding lightheartedly pleased about it so i’m a) glad and b) hoping this means he makes it to s5......trying to pitch benston before they have the writing roundtable for that one or however writing for tv works. i have a bud literally in that line of work. I Will Never Inquire. like hey patch me through to the billions ppl in nyc, i know you’re in la and have been in this for a year so you have Every Connection and have just been waiting for me to ask

Describe your comic’s protagonist.  Why should we as an audience care about them and their goals?

Nutty (Court of Roses)

Technically I have five protagonists in Court of Roses http://courtofroses.thecomicseries.com/, but I can focus on the main one; Merlow is simply a wandering minstrel who, despite fighting some inner demons, just wants to bring laughter and song everywhere he goes. He is passionate and loves his line of work, and finds the beauty in all expressions in music, and, in turn, in life and in people. His friendly and sincere approach to everyone is what helps bring him and the other four main bards together. Without spoiling too much, once they begin to travel together, he'll be the unofficial leader and the glue between them all.

HoK is about heartbreaks that develop quietly, between people who do genuinely care about each other. The main example of such heartbreaks is feeling abandoned when you need their support more than ever. A lot of us have been through that, myself included. There are countless variations of that experience; the specific variations that I know firsthand, I've mixed them around and given to Ethan and Danbi. That's why their story speaks to my soul, the bruised part of it. And maybe it will speak to yours, too, for the same reasons.

Millennium's http://millennium.thecomicseries.com/ protagonist, Sage, is a kindhearted, southern farmer who has been thrown into a lot of bad situations he could never understand or prepare for, but always approaches with as much love as he can. I guess we root for him because we, too, want to see the best in things and have that kind of positivity work out.

Conan of Galebound http://www.galebound.com/ is a pretty typical farmboy, except he just learned that he's a Hidden Backup Prince, that he has the power to command Magicians, that he's an assassination target, his kidnapper/protector is probably also an assassin, and the literal ocean called him "far worse"--whatever that means. He's had a rough couple of days. I like to think he's relatable and ultimately a good person. At first, his goal was just to get back home, but then he made a terrible mistake with his newly-discovered power. Immediately he takes responsibility for his actions, seeking to learn more about this power so he doesn't hurt anyone else and maybe even help against those using the same power for cruel reasons. Once he feels responsible for something, he tends to through his entire self into taking care of or fixing a problem--sometimes to the point of being a bit self-sacrificial about it. His overall arc, though, is really about following your heart, and recognizing what you really want to do versus what you're doing out of a sense of obligation--or sometimes discovering that your "obligations" and what you want are one and the same.

My comic's protagonist (http://ask-a-warlock.tumblr.com/) is actually not the warlock...it's a small bird named Margo who is an animate drawing. She hops out of an illuminated manuscript one day and discovers the real world is very brutal and harsh. Through a series of buddy adventures with a knight, and demonic crime-solving with a cleric, Margo does eventually choose to be part of the real world, because she belongs with her friends...although she secretly desires to be human, as well(edited)

The Angel with Black Wings http://blackwings.mharz.com/ or Big Sis as what me and my readers call her at this point is a sweet and very caring towards people. She's like a motherly figure of some sort. (The one who will tuck you in bed and bake you loads of cookies) However she's heavily plagued by mental illness (feeling extreme guilt and blaming herself on anything bad that happens around her, thinking she doesn't deserve anything good in life, and inner voices that seems to be getting stronger as time passes.) Even tho she thinks she doesn't deserve it, deep down there is a tiny glimmer of hope that one day, she'd be forgiven. Altho her mental issues are amplified, I think most of us can relate to have felt guilt about something we did/didn't do and dwelled and ruminated on it for so long, having uncontrollable thoughts and inner voices that tells us that we are worthless, we are horrible people, everyone hates us and we don't deserve anything. I personally on that boat and slowly working on getting better. So I wrote my comics in the hope whoever reads my comics can make them feel better in some way and find that glimmer of hope. wheeze (edited)

Emily (http://welcometoblackball.com/) is pretty much a passive doormat. She starts out just doing whatever her parents say and taking the path of least resistence until she feels she can't, that she has to take action to solve her sister's murder. But she has no patience for the shenanigans and games of others, always taking the most direct path she can. Some would say this makes her a concise person, but in her mind she's just doing what's easiest. She ends becoming more assertive and independent over time until she can finally make her own life choices with confidence. A good bit of her insecurities come from being very ill with measles a few years ago, and having to have her hair shaved off. It never grew back quite the same as it was, and her parents are a little more on her case because they want her to marry well in society.

I think on paper, Toivo (https://ingress-comic.com/) sounds awful. He’s a wizard professor, single father, serial romantic, and unlucky in his adventures. He’s anxious and a little mean and obnoxious. He’s snarky and kind of an asshole and makes mistakes and doesn’t consider other people’s emotions, so he makes things hard for other people. He orchestrates most of the problems he has to solve. But i think that’s why he’s fun? He’s a good person at heart but he isn’t perfect and that’s the type of character I like to read about.

I've enjoyed reading his misadventures so far. I think that since he usually learns some sort of lesson from his misadventures it makes him really endearing to balance out his flaws

Lamar Anderson, the current focus of We Are The Wyrecats (http://wyrecats.com/) is a superhero of unyielding principle, to the point of self-destructive fanaticism. He’s a mute genius with cerebral palsy, who has difficulty walking without his hero armor. The Wyrecats were the first and only time he felt like he had friends, and K.A. was his first crush (reciprocated, though neither of them acted on it). When she was put in a coma and the team disbanded, he basically started a one man war against the US government that secretly initiated the plot (long story). Five years later, with K.A. waking up, he’s been questioning his approach, which involved stockpiling weapons and hiring mercenaries to wage guerilla war upon his country’s intelligence agencies. Since K.A.’s hardly in the best mental health at the moment, Lamar’s trying to do his best by her to make a world she’d want to live in.

Mizuki Sato is the protagonist of Super Galaxy Knights Deluxe R (http://sgkdr.thecomicseries.com/). She's a small woman from a small farm town, going on adventures through a strange world. Mizuki's main draw is that she's entertaining to watch. She constantly back-sasses & annoys the people she encounters on her journey (to be fair, some of those people are Taci Ramino) - and when action happens, Mizuki is ahead of the game, out-strategizing her enemies and pushing past her own limits. She may be a bit reckless with her own health, but to her it's worth it if she's helping other people in any way. Mizuki's main goal in life is to find love - someone she could get married to someday, specifically. But... that often doesn't work out for her. Every time Mizuki falls for someone, she loses them to someone else - or worse, she ends up in a short-lived relationship filled with endless put-downs. The people Mizuki encounters in her daily life enjoy the fact that she's around. They like the way she entertains them, the way she helps them out, the way she... makes them happy. But, at least from Mizuki's perspective, nobody she meets actually loves her in any meaningful way. anyway funney muscle lady shoot rainbow lasers woo

My comic AntiBunny http://antibunny.net/ has multiple protagonists depending on what angle we're seeing the world through, but the original protagonist Pooky Bunny can be best described as a gender ambiguous depressed mess who's trying to become a better person. Why should you care? When you first meet Pooky their depression is clearly in control. As the story unfolds in the past you start to see where that depression comes from, and as it unfolds in the present you'll see Pooky learning to let others in, slowly moving to become a better person. Pooky is not OK, and realizes that, but also sees a way forward. So if you want to see someone who is initially consumed by their flaws and who eventually realizes them and works to overcome them, then maybe you'll care about Pooky. What are their goals? Pooky has both what I'd call external goals, that is things they want to accomplish in the real world, and internal ones, that is how they'd like to change as a person. Externally Pooky is all about unraveling mysteries. Being a reporter Pooky often is chasing a story. Internally Pooky's goals change. Early on it's little more than subsistence. Struggling to get by from one day to the next. Though as the story progresses as Pooky says "I'm trying to be a better person." Pooky goes from being someone who's dead inside to coming alive again. You'll see that trauma in Nailbat that started this, and in The Gritty City Stories you'll see the recovery. It's all about the fall, bottoming out, and climbing back up. Essentially that's Pooky.

Attila Polyák

Anne is the protagonist and mostly the perspective character of Tales of Midgard: The Age of Magic https://talesofmidgard.com/comic/book-1-cover-page/. She's a knight and a mage and more or less she's a well established person with a generally (currently) good life. She's definitely not someone special. Magic is very common and accessible to basically everyone and being a knight in a world full of magic is also not really extraordinary. So why should you care about someone who's not special? That's exactly the point! Most fantasy stories are set in fantastic worlds yet the main cast, and the protagonists especially, are still special. Even compared to the world. Not here. This story is the story of the everyman. The true everyman, not a chosen one, not someone who is surrounded by prophecies left and right, just your regular normal person. Of course we're still in a fantasy world so what's regular to the characters is still fantastic for the readers, and these "everydays" are still adventures compared to the normal lives most of us live in real life. Plus... Just because she not special she and everyone else in the story can still, just like in real life, be swooped up into events that are larger than life and seeing normal people cope with the extraordinary is always more interesting than extraordinary people playing their own game.

Super unorganized list of my all-time favorite video games

In no particular order, like the title suggests:

• Deus Ex (PC game that later got a somewhat crappy PS2 port; superb storyline that’ll blow you away, but the graphics have aged piss-poorly (there’s a multitude of mods for that tho). Challenging yet fun FPS/RPG combo w/ intricate level design and super goofy cheats. I also highly recommend a mod of this game by the title “The Nameless Mod”, but you need the base game to run it. Good news tho: It’s on Steam!)

•The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (ooof course; this is a total given)

•Jak And Daxter, Jak II, Jak 3 (amazing games~~ and oh man the nostalgiaaa)

• Graffiti Kingdom (obscure asf but SO GOOD, goofy, charming n wholesome)

•Kya: Dark Lineage (breathtaking masterpiece I would play for HOURS)

•Ape Escape 3 (I reblog this a lot. Can’t say enough good things about this kawaii-ass game, so I won’t even try)

•The Sims 2 for PS2/GameCube along with The Urbz (Neon East was my SHIT)

•Spyro: A Hero’s Tail (although Enter The Dragonfly is a close second)

•Kingdom Hearts (I’ve only played the first game oops...well, and part of the GBA Chain of Memories, but I didn’t quite care for that one)

•Legend Of Zelda: Majora’s Mask (tied with Wind Waker and Minish Cap)

•Portal Runner (again, super obscure, but AMAZING. You play as a toy, and the second level is literally a toy store...it’s just so cute and engaging lol. 10/10 lion sidekick and beautifully designed locations, Would play again)

•The Legend Of Kay (beautiful scenery, lots of exploration, ridiculously cool upgrades, swords, and just FUN ASF)

•Banjo Kazooie: Grunty’s Revenge for GBA (I’m sure the N64 one is fantastic too, but I didn’t grow up with that one & subsequently haven’t played it)

•Lady Sia (a super obscure GBA game)

•basically all the Pokémon main series games (except for a couple), with my favorite Poké game being a tie between ORAS, SuMo, and Black/White 2.

•Silent Hill 4: The Room (serious nightmare fuel...damb)

• Neopets: The Darkest Faerie (don’t judge me ok, that game is a fucking MASTERPIECE. Really. I have literally cried just sitting there reminiscing about this wonderful game)

•X2: Wolverine’s Revenge (X-Men)

• Beyond Good & Evil (fucked me UP)

•Bratz: Rock Angelz (I have a lot of sentimental feelings over it okay )

•Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door

•Animal Crossing and all its sequels

•Super Monkey Ball 2 (played this one endlessly w/ my childhood best friend)

•Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal

•Teen Titans for PS2 (even though it’s an extremely poorly designed and short asf game, just bc, well, I used to love Teen Titans so much. They also had two very cool GBA games)

•Yokai Watch 1 and 2 (I reeeally hope YW3 Sushi & Tempura gets localized)

•Doki Doki Literature Club (no joke!!)

•Champions of Norrath (Skyrim-ish PS2 game that I remember was rly challenging and fun)

•Deus Ex: Human Revolution (prequel to Deus Ex 1 and the 3rd installment in the series, with “Mankind Divided” being the 4th game. Not as good as the first game imo, nor does it have the same atmosphere, but it’s very endearing, intriguing, and fun in its own way)

•Mystic Messenger (shhHh it’s considered a video game!! SHHHh)

•A few Kirby games (Triple Deluxe is my favorite, don’t hate), aaand that’s it.

I’ll add more whenever I actually remember some other ones. Rn I’m drawing a blank.

And recently I’ve gotten really into Fire Emblem as you guys can probably tell (playing Fates, Awakening, and FEH), but it’s not one of my All Time Favs™️ yet. Anyways, thanks for reading! :3c

I did not expect this at all, but im very glad i have a distraction from studying bc i literally have a thousand things to say abt harry ok.

1. I think my all time favorite song from HS1 is SOTT, bc it is iconic and i genuinely think it’s one of the best songs that anyone has released in the past few years. HOWEVER! I also love ESNY so much, it is a heartbreaking song and it rly hits home, as well as FTDT. These two songs are very slow and like basic production and melody wise, but the lyrics are what rly get me, especially certain lines like “I’ve been praying I neevr did before understand I’m talking to the wall” and “I see you gave him my old t-shirt, more of what was once mine.” These two lines in particular kill me and make me want to cry lol. I also loooooooooooove Only Angel bc it’s such a sexy song and i feel like a rockstar whenever I listen to it. My favorite performance of SOTT was 100% the Late Late Show one, FTDT is the behind the album version, ESNY is the one he did on SNL and I don’t rly have an Only Angel one although i also love the one he did in BTA

I had a weird dream last night that there was like a new sequel comic made by the Bobobobo Bo-Bobo guy and it was calld ‘Blind Nya’ (???) and it was officially licensced by sega and then there was a scene of eggman in Garnet cosplay doing a fusion dance with Don Patch

Also another dream where I was equally convinced that a thing existed, but it was less funny this time and more So Mundane That I Wonder Why I Dreamed This. It was just some sort of anime dating sim that i thought was Ehh kinda average, like i was living in an alternate world where this had been a part of my childhood that was so boring i forgot. I think it was called ‘Goodbye Mayfly’, and in context my dream-mind was trying to remember the word Wallflower, i think? Anyway you are An Anime High School Girl and Date Some Cliche Strait Dood Archetypes. But I think also there was something with a parallel world that was magic?

Like I think I was possibly taking inspiration from the manga Dream Saga Takamahagara (hope I spelled that right) which was actually a very unknown thing that I liked when i was a young kid. (First ever canon trans character I ever saw in anything!) Anyway the plot of that manga is that everyone has a parallel self in a magical mirror fantasy world, and when you dream in our world you wake up there and vice versa. Protagonist was the only one with the power to remember our world when she went to that world, at the cost of not having a parallel life over there so she was totally lost and needed to have her parallel friends explain all the worldbuilding to her. But they didn’t remember her and she had to win their trust again until they awakened as part of the super duper hero team and gained magical girl powers and stuff. then save de world!! Also everyone was lil kids in real world and bishie magical girl/boy type characters in fantasy world, so it had that cool element of ‘wow i wonder what i’ll be like when i grow up and get to have grown up adventures’. (Ha.. ha... kids, the real grown up adventures are just paying gas bills and stuff, don’t idealize us...) And also there was one character whose fantasy world self was a girl and like in the real world she was ‘a boy who wants to be a girl’, and just it was nice to see a trans character explained in rather simple terms for kids, even if also sometimes the portrayal wasn’t 100% perfect. man I wish i could read that story again but its so hard to find the books! i never even got to see what the ending is...

ANYWAY BACK TO THE DREAM So it was a dating sim in that sort of setting, but the mirror world was just a very boring cliche alice in wonderland ripoff instead of the cool desert setting from Dream Saga that combined japanese and indian mythology. And it was just something like you were a princess and everyone else was a prince of a different kingdom and then you had basically the same dynamic as you did in real life high school? So it was just like ‘your choices in real life high school have way more importance and you’ll have an even bigger happy ending’, cos you’d unify some fantasy kingdoms. And then i (sadly) don’t rememember if any of the other princes got to be cool fantasy races or anything, but if I could make this game for real then they TOTALLy would be! Hug your shy and nice ogre boyfriend!! get swept off your feet by the king of bunny boy kingdom! (I am still so pissed that i saw concept art of the Viera race in FF12 as a both genders non sexualized thing, like it makes me even madder to know they wasted a good idea instead of always intending it to be the bad version...) Also I think the game actually had some character customization, and in the dream i was like ‘man this is the only good part of this’. It was kinda basic tho, you just selected from five or so preset appearances for your protag and all of them were white, lol. But it was interesting cos the appearance selection also corresponded to what elemental affinity your fantasy kingdom would have! And you had different kinds of elemental fairy wings. Also i recall that all the selection pictures for the different elements had the protag doing some sort of weird model pose while a lot of terrible ps1 era particle effects floated in the background. Like a non sexualized version of this random character from Monster Rancher: (have a good laugh at the badly translated profiles, lol)

And then like I never got to actually play the game before I woke up? I was just on the character creator screen complaining about how I’d apparantly played it before and I knew that half of the elemental options were essentially unuseable due to bad gameplay balance. Like there wasnt any battle or anything, the element just determined your starting boosts and penalties to social stats you needed to romance all the doods. And apaprantly some stats were easier to gain than others, so certain boosts were essentially useless and certain penalties made the game almost unwinnable. I think I always still picked those broken options tho, cos I was more interested in picking the character i thought looked coolest rather than winning the game. Also all of the dudes weren’t very fun to romance, apparantly! I remember that dream-me was really annoyed about the ‘chair kicking scene’? Like, there was one character who was an immature bully in highschoolverse and then he was supposed to be the super rich and noble prince that’s the best ending in the fantasyverse. One of those ‘oh i was just bullying you cos i liked you’ plots of a jerkass boyfriend who never even apologizes or anything. And the last straw for me was when he kept kicking your chair during class and then lying to get you in trouble when you told the teacher about it. I was like ‘wtf dude, you’re THAT immature? aren’t you supposed to be 16??’ And I think I was mad cos he had turquoise hair and I liked his character design but he was a douche.

Just like how I was annoyed playing Spirited Heart Deluxe cos Frebo has a cool design and is a sarcastic funnyman but then he’s also supposed to be an adult and you’re a teenager and its Creepy. (the damn art style makes everyone look like a teenager, how was I meant to see that coming??) And like yeah, I know that the game keeps going for like six years but there isn’t anything in play to make it so that you can’t marry him until after you’re of legal age and all. And he’s still got a huge age difference even if you wait til the end of the game to tie the knot, and its still a teacher-student thing thats kinda creepy... Oh and randomly I found a site that has pics of all the different job costumes in that game! Good so you can see how awkward it is to try and tell age, cos like your height seems to vary depending on which one you pick, lol.. And while I’m going off on this tangeant I may as well ramble about how its funny that the gay DLC expansion pack had so much of an art improvement that it makes it look weird in comparison. (All those routes were way better written too!) Also I’m still sad that the sequel got cancelled, but its funny how Frebo looks EVEN MORE younger than you! Damn u game why u confuse me with elf dads

Highlights from Walter Becker’s Estate Sale

Walter Becker’s guitar estate sale was listed recently, and boy howdy is it a fuckin’ doozy.

If you’ve followed along during any of my numerous Steely Dan binges, you’ll know that Becker was a god in the studio...whether on bass, guitar, behind the board, mixing, composing and arranging, or leading a band of the finest musical mercenaries you could hire...and his collection of gear is exactly what you might imagine a musician like that would have around.

There are some crucial pieces missing...I’m assuming the most important parts of his collection stayed within his and the Steely Dan family...but overall, it’s just preposterously awesome.

Notes and my picks of the litter after the jump...

Make no mistake, this is excess.  The sheer number of vintage Gibson archtops for a guy who never recorded with them is kind of grotesque.

Becker was clearly compulsive.  He has Fender replicas in the exact same color schemes, with the same pickups because...likely...one of these custom builders’ guitars found a way into his hands and he bought six of them in his favorite styles, and likely thought “this is the best Fender I’ve ever played.”  Soon they’d find themselves in storage next to his vintage original Fenders, as the next flavor of the month came along.

The amps...it’s just absurd.  One watt, one hundred watts, 8x10″ speakers, 1x8″ speakers, every make, model, color, combo, you name it.  The sheer physical space that amp collection must have taken up is hard to imagine.�� He’s got like half of a page dedicated to his Fender Champ collection alone.

It’s redundancy on top of redundancy on top of redundancy.  That said, all of it...every, single, piece...is something a guitarist or bassist would drool to have in their arsenal.  Lets get to my favorites...I kinda broke it down by general category.

THE “FENDERS”

1954 Fender Stratocaster (est. winning bid $10,000-15,000)

1961 Fender Stratocaster ($10,000-$12,000)

James Tyler Custom ($3,000-$5,000)

“Danocaster” Telecaster ($1,000-$2,000)

Sadowsky Custom Telecaster “The Dumpster Guitar” ($2,000-$3,000)

Notes:  Vintage Fenders are the fucking best.  The Tyler is the backup to the guitar you see at the top of the post...James Tyler was one of the first guys to make these insane “Fender on Steroids” guitars, and if you’ve ever played one you’ll know how crazy it is that, even today with the spectacular boutique builders around, the quality of his guitars is almost unmatched.

“Danocasters” are Fender-style instruments put together by this guy who started his business on a heavily populated guitar forum.  Superb attention to detail, really well done pieces, and he just retired so his guitars are insanely overpriced.  Getting Walter Becker’s in that price range would be about 1/2-1/3 of what they’re going for used since then, and I’m sure that the estimated price reflects the sudden and dramatic uptick in the market.  There are some basic, no-frills Danocaster Strats and Teles on the used market going for substantially more than $5,000...and this is a semi-famous guy’s.

The “Dumpster Guitar” is named for a hissy fit Walter threw when he was playing a particularly shitty show.  At the break, he threw it in the dumpster outside the club they were playing...but then later felt bad and had one of his techs go get it.

THE GIBSONS

1971 Gibson “1958″ Les Paul Standard ($3,000-$5,000)

1953 Gibson “1958″ Les Paul Standard ($10,000-$15,000)

1965 Gibson Firebird V ($2,000-$4,000)

NOTES:  The two gold top Les Paul’s are pretty funny, if you’re into the whole “nerd” thing.  In 1971, there wasn’t this library of knowledge about vintage guitars like there are today.  Hell, in 1971, all these guitars and basses weren’t even old enough to be considered vintage in the first place.

So in 1971, Gibson came out with “1958 reissues.”  The guitar that they came out with...seen above...is a 1954 Les Paul, not a 1958.  A 1958 would have had a sunburst finish, two humbuckers and a two-piece stop tailpiece, not the wraparound.

Well, whatever numbers Gibson put on that model are irrelevant, because Becker had his 1952-54 Les Paul with P90′s...so he took his 1953 Les Paul with P90′s and turned it into a 1958 (with a gold top).  The ‘53 (’58 conversion) is my belle of the ball.

Firebird included because Becker was one of the most famous Firebird devotees.

NOTES:  Walter Becker was a P-Bass icon...if you’ve heard “Deacon Blues,” you’ve heard that 1958 P-Bass.  I’ve said so much about P-Basses for a reason...in the studio, they are the undefeated kings.  It’d have been more of a surprised if a studio god like Becker didn’t have a P-Bass in the mix.

Unfortunately, you’ve heard that hideous disgusting monstrosity at the end more times than I feel comfortable telling you.  The gold hollow bass has “Signature” in quotes because every bassist and their mother knows that’s Jack Casady’s bass.

NOTES:  The reason there are so many small, low-wattage amps in Becker’s collection is because of their utility in the studio.  When the tubes in amplifiers are working beyond their capacity, they produce pleasant-sounding harmonics.  Obviously, in order to push the tubes into that overdrive, you need volume.

Volume isn’t an issue outdoors or in big clubs, but it’s not necessary in the small confines of a studio.  In fact, if anything, you could argue that big amps are at a severe disadvantage in a studio.  Think of Led Zeppelin’s first album and all those insane Jimmy Page guitar parts...all of that was recorded on a 5-watt Fender Champ with an 8″ speaker, cranked all the way up.

The Champs, the Deluxe Reverb, Vibrolux*, Princeton Reverb, Cowtipper, Two Rock and Matchless are low-wattage beasts that fit a certain role.  The Champs gave you that classic dirt, the Princeton and Vibrolux a more refined version of that dirt.  Deluxe’s were used for great cleans that were thisclose to being overdriven.  The Matchless is what you used instead of a Vox.  The Two Rock was a tiny Dumble.  The Cowtipper was a Fender/Vox twist with a Marshall edge.

*If you bought a new Fender Vibrolux exactly like Walter Becker’s, you would pay more than the estimated winning bid.  Which makes zero sense, given that amp probably has some fat, amp nerd genius’ fat greasy fingerprints all over it.

The Dr. Z and Bogner amps are for the live rig.  The Bogner Ecstasy is probably the most beautiful sounding high-gain amplifier in the world, and the Dr. Z was probably bought because he wanted to buy something.  Dr. Z’s are made in Cleveland tho, so of course I had to include that amp somehow.  Speaking of higher-wattage amps...remember that anecdote I told you about “Reelin’ in the Years” guitar part being recorded on a cranked Ampeg SVT?  That’s likely it.

Which brings us to the Klon...obviously not an amp.  The Klon is still used by top guitarists everywhere because it adds something very subtle, but majorly impactful to your sound.  Forgetting the mythos, it has three things that will forever be in utility...it’s completely transparent, it’s buffered, and it sounds amazing.

It’s a transparent treble boost pedal.  Now, all pedals, channels, cables, etc color your sound somewhat.  If every company made truly transparent stuff, it’d all sound the same.  But say you have your tone (clean or distorted)...and you want to boost your tone with no color...that’s where the Klon comes in.

The buffered line?  On long cable chains, your signal gets weaker...buffered lines help maintain the integrity of that signal from guitar to the speaker.  And when you add the extremely transparent treble boost to the signal, your tubes start to produce more harmonics without adding in any distortion or extra bass and mids that could woof the speaker.  For top guitarists, something like that is incredibly useful...some even keep it on all the time.
