Over the weekend, I got to see the korean production of Sweeny Todd. It was awesome. Shin SungRok was Sweeny, and I was blown away from his performance. I had only known him as a drama actor and not a musical one but good lord he can sing. Sometimes I don’t miss them. And sometimes I do…alot. Especially my 6 year old kindergartners and my 2nd graders. The 2nd graders I taught in 1st grade too so we knew each other well and had a great classroom dynamic (most days) and enjoyed learning together. Botox?

Today I went to the Eye Gentry in Seomyeon to finally replace the glasses I had for five years. The assistant at Eye Gentry and I were able to communicate with the usual mashup of Korean and English going on between us and I was able to find a pair I like ( although the big black nose pads will take awhile to get used to...anyhoot).

As he was filling out my information, I showed him my ARC so he could get my full name. I am an Indian born female who is Hindu, I have a long a$$ name. Miki makes life easier for me, and everyone else ( except my students who spell my name as Mike....ANYHOOT).

He looked at my ARC pic, which is from 2015, and he seemed surprised. My initial thought was “oh, yeah I mean I’m blonde now...although you can see the roots.” But no...he points to his chin and than my chin and asked “botox?”

SURPRISE BRAGGING POST ON MAINTAINING MY WEIGHT. Got you.

He thought I used botox to lose the weight around my face, but no it’s just because I have been keeping the weight down. Hahaha, man now I’m going to get slapped by some karma and tomorrow gain 20 pounds ( btw* that’s not how karma actually works...huge misconception...karma is in fact NOT a bit**).

That’s all. Gonna go drink a 1.2 L bottle of Trevi because I have a serious sparkling water addiction.

[Cathleen in Korea]: Day 1- It’s hard

Day 1: Before hopping on the plane to Korea, I went to San Jose to visit my grandparents and it was nice. My grandma made one of my favorite meals which is Hainanese Chicken Rice. It was so good! Better than my mom’s. After the visit, I was off to SFO airport. Beverly came to say her goodbyes and I almost cried but I told myself not to and it worked haha. Then my parents stayed with me for a bit and I said my goodbyes and hugged everyone. I told myself not to cry, but when I hugged my mom, I couldn’t help but cry. Finally it was time to walk through security and hop on the plane to Korea.

I was able to get a window seat and it’s one of the best seats for sleeping, but it also means no bathroom. I actually didn’t even use the bathroom at all during the 12 hr flight to Taipei, but I did sleep like a baby. There was actually a 1 hour delay at SFO...I was kind of annoyed that the delay was so long and I was worried I wouldn't make it to my connecting flight to Korea. But no worries, I made it.

Finally! Korea!! I made it to Korea! I got on bus 6003 and got off at Seoul National University where I met my friend! We went to the realtor office so I can get my apartment and she helped me with translating everything and I was so thankful. <3 I’m so glad to have her in my life. After signing my part of my contract for the apartment, we went to the owner of the building so he can sign his part of the contract but he said that since I’m not Korean he cant sign the contract because I can run away and he wouldn't know where to find me, so I would need a guarantor. The realtor lady said she will guarantee me and I was super thankful. But I had to go back to the realtor office to resign the contract the next day. After I was able to go to my apartment and its actually pretty tiny, but after I started cleaning it...I realized its not that small. I unpacked my stuff, went to Daiso to buy stuff..couldnt buy much cause not enough hands...and then finally at like 8PM I had my first meal of the day...I went to Ministop and bought Kimbap...it didn’t taste good so I only had like two pieces. Went to sleep early because it was such an exhausting day + jetlag lol. That was pretty much the first day.

20221221🐚 Mom are you sure that [sand] is sanitary? It looks questionable to me! - probably Logan (Tarzan) ____ After encountering so many kids at my work that only had one day to rest and the rest of the week are jam-packed with classes, tutors, homework, and how tired and desperate to just play they were I knew I didn't want to do that to my child. But I can't lie now that Logan is here I see the competition that drives parents to do that much clearer. I still will strive not to unless he wants it or needs it and instead I want to teach him all I can organically. One of the first things I want to teach him is about nature through experience and to love animals which I didn't think I had to since I thought kids are naturally born loving them. I mean my siblings and I spent our vacations at our aunt's who rescues dogs and Colombian wildlife. My mom takes home every little stray cat she sees and all my high school classmates have more than one pet they adore. So you can imagine my surprise when T told me he was not fond of birds, or big dogs (it has been a learning curve) or at work when more than one child told me that aside from kittens and bunnies they don't like animals, I was literally the shocked Pikachu meme. I guess it's because of the lack of exposure to animals, and native wildlife they can naturally encounter. That's why it's important to me to teach most importantly of all to respect them and their habitat even if it's as small and seemingly unimportant as a seashell. For now, he's absolutely obsessed with Bean so we're doing okay.
