Something Better chapter 30 - "Her Cave" - is out NOW!
Something Better is my Jasper-centric Steven Universe fanfic, canon compliant, set after the events of SU Future. It deals with Jasper trying to find meaning in her life without a Diamond.
Deals with themes of existentialism, the absurd, the non-linear path to healing, the conflict of religious trauma vs religious hope, and also there's Jaspearl. Click the link above to read it!

To my fellow lesbian drama fans, am I the only one noticing parallels between the character's arcs of Gideon and Harrowhark (The Locked Tomb) and Madoka and Homura (Madoka Magica)?
Spoiler warning for both media in the text below, of course. And please, if you interact with this post, keep in mind I'm still reading Nona (although I'm almost at the end, about 1/4 left)
And thank you, my lovely @grosutina, for letting me scream to you about all this and for introducing me to the tlt series
This all started because I've read before how people jokingly call Gideon "lesbian Jesus" and I instantly thought of how Madoka is called "lesbian God". But that wasn't all. The more I thought about it, the more parallels I kept finding.
I just read the part where Gideon wakes up in Nona (or, reveals she was awake the whole time) and it initially shocked me how ANGRY she was. She was angry and like Nona pointed out, she was also extremely sad. But the more I thought about it, the more I understood why she was like that. She gave herself away to Harrow and sacrificed her whole self, but Harrow, in an attempt to save Gideon, mostly out of love, went as far as to lobotomize herself to prevent herself from fully absorbing Gideon! I write "mostly out of love" since this also has a tang of selfishness, she couldn't imagine a life without Gideon for herself. And I am not judging her at all. There's the whole thing about Harrow already feeling like a blob of corpses, but that's an analysis that other people can do better than me. But to Gideon, that just screams rejection on Harrow's part. It doesn't help that they haven't talked much about things and are just doing what each thinks is best for the other.
Can you see the connections already? Homura does exactly the same to Madoka. Homura rejects Madoka's sacrifice and takes it upon herself to redo it and "force" Madoka to be "saved" so she can have a normal, happy life. This completely overrides Madoka's sense of agency. She made the decision for herself, but the person who loves her the most went behind her back, did not understand her true wishes, and forced a reality on Madoka that Madoka didn't really want. This is all out of love and care from both parties. I actually really like this specific post about the flower scene in Rebellion that explores this further https://www.tumblr.com/faelapis/728119853949534208/pmmm-rebellion-the-flower-scene?source=share
Another parallel I noticed is the way that both Homura and Harrow cope with the losses of their loved ones by creating alternate universes. And they both do this by sacrificing something: Harrow modifies her own brain, and Homura transforms into a witch.
Lastly, just the whole parallels with Gideon and Madoka being religious icons.
Of course, the stories themselves are not that similar, but I find it very interesting how both main couples of the series are incredibly identical. It all comes down to how these characters love each other and the extraordinary outside circumstances that force them not to communicate with each other.
In the end, I wish I could draw Gideon/Madoka and Harrow/Homura outfit swaps.
PS: writing all this makes me even more hyped for the new Madoka movie. How will Madoka react to what Homura did? Will she be as angry as Gideon was when she woke up? Seeing Madoka angry is something I didn't know I wanted to see but now I really hope they do it.

So, a while ago @faelapis made a speculation post about how King Magnifico from Wish Disney is going to have a different direction from the classic Disney Villains.
Today a sneak peek of his villain song came out and you can see based on the lyrics of the some of these motivations.
¨I'll be the first one to volunteer if your world were to crumble or if you are in trouble¨ ¨I'll let you live for free And i won't even charge rent I'll clean up all your messes And always there when you need to vent¨ ¨I've given, given and given and all be content All i really want is just a little respect And this is the thanks i get!?¨
Based on the lyrics we see that both Asha and King Magnifico have a desire to help the kingdom they live in and King Magnifico is trying to look for the best of his people.
The thing is that King Magnifico doesn't seem to be respected by his own people and it is hinted that they are always asking for more of him (like the armor grabbing his foot in the song sequence seem to be representing that). We don't know the context of this song, but the intention clearly is that King Magnifico is frustrated by the lack of gratitude or respect from his people and that frustration ends up in him using the power of the wishes to ¨get that respect¨ he thinks he deserves. The full song gets released tomorrow. So i'm probably going to make another post talking about King Magnifico's motivations and so some speculation based on the lyrics.

20 questions for fic writers
thank you for tagging me @louwhose !!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
39!
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
237,923.... I thought it'd be more
3. What fandoms do you write for?
right now i'm mostly writing for the legend of zelda tbh.... i plan to write more wwdits someday though
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Bared Fangs (wwdits)
Getting It Right (wwdits)
an anonymous fic that i'd rather not associate with this blog
Love Spell (ofmd)
another anonymous fic that I don't want to associate with this blog lmao
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
yes!!! I try to respond more often than not, comments make me so happy and I want people to know i'm grateful for them!
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
hmm... tbh I don't write a whole lot of angst? the closest I got is bittersweet, and I think the ending of lost in the woods (legend of zelda) is somewhat bittersweet
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Getting It Right has such an adorably fluffy ending ngl
8. Do you get hate on fics?
nope! i've gotten a slightly rude comment here and there but nothing intentionally hateful
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
yes, and I always post it anonymously because I am ashamed lmao
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
nope!
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
not that I know of
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
no but i'd love if someone did!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
i've attempted it a few times but none of them have gotten finished unfortunately
14. What's your all-time favorite ship?
that's always changing tbh. right now it's zelink but I would have said the same thing about nandermo a few months ago
15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
there was a tuck everlasting hannibal au I started a few years ago but I never finished it and probably never will because I don't have much motivation to write for that fandom anymore
16. What are your writing strengths?
i'm good at writing funny dialogue I think!
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
using the same phrases too often. sometimes I add a bunch of unnecessary details when describing things too which makes it kinda cluttered
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
i think it can work as long as you're not relying too much on Google translate
19. First fandom you wrote for?
warrior cats LMAO I used to write dumb warriors crack fanfiction when I was like 12 and it was entirely "rawr XD" humor
20. Favorite fic you've ever written?
it changes a lot honestly hmm.... i'm really fond of this autistic nandor fic I wrote (Heavy Quilt), it was very cathartic to write and I sometimes find myself re-reading it when i'm having a rough time
i'm also really fond of 08/01/13, which I wrote for a hannibal flashfic a while back. my writing has improved a LOT since then so it's not the best fic i've written, but I am still proud of the story itself :3
i'll tag @faelapis @bjdeogame @farore-or-less and @fifthnormani and anyone else who wants to do this!

“neck is thicker than you thought” is SUCH important steven advice, i see so many struggling with that
yeah, i remember drawing steven with a neck the first times and then actually looking at the movie screenshots and being like. huh, i’m really getting him horribly wrong jaksfs. i think it’s very important to make it wider for getting the rest of his head’s proportions down and keeping his steveny silhouette (like i think the concept art in the movie art book emphasised somewhat, too? tho i think that was more about the jacket). i had to be mindful of it for a bit.

it is actually board driven, according to the executive producer:
Tumblr media
there are a ton of weird rumors i see about the (average on most counts) production of this particular show. one i remember was that they had no model sheets even though it’s very easy to find said model sheets.

i was wondering, i get stuck on this phase a lot, do you have any advice for plotting and planning?
Hmm... lemme try and consider a few things that- on reflection- I think are helpful for me.
For one, I always think it’s important to write down like... every glimmer of a thought you have while in the plotting stage. Even if it’s Dumb™ or cliche, or you have no idea what on Earth to do with it. Perhaps it could be content that you come back to later and find a proper place to fit it in to the narrative. And at the very least, it’s a little brain warmup.
The other thing I personally tend to do, especially for multi-chapters, is to focus my broad plotting on one of two things, sometimes both at once depending on the story:
1) Where do I want my characters to end up emotionally, and relationally with others by the end of this story/arc?
2) What is the desired climax of my story, and what kind of general story events can lead me there?
Sometimes the climax is a mystery while I’m plotting, and sometimes I have a pretty clear idea from the get-go. It really depends. Others might instead chose to consider the themes they wish to impart with the story and work backwards from there.
But re: characters, for Crack the Paragon, I have a whole huge document that consists of exclusively character notes for all the principle characters. I work to keep careful track of what their relationship is like with other characters, and if/when any of those relationships change... what their mental state is like throughout the story, and how that might impact their decision making, stuff like that. Steven and Jasper especially have a lot of notes in that, since they’re probably the two characters who change the most over the course of what I have planned.
But in general... as long as I have at least one of those things fairly solid, the rest of my plotting is mostly filling in the blanks, finding a way to get my characters from A to B. I kinda think of it like drawing animation in-betweens. You have the key shots, and then from there it’s just a matter of solidifying the frames that sit between those. I tend to take it in stages... First, the leading points of the story... then, “hmm, what broad elements would make this character take this action?” And then I usually start thinking of specific conversation beats, and smaller details I may want to throw in to my work.
I honestly try not to overplot, though. I think there’s also something special about allowing oneself room to explore a scene that can be really fulfilling, and often lead to unexpected interactions.
...I’m no expert though, for sure. I only write for hobby, and it’s possible that these sorts of methods may work for me and not for others.

Something Better chapter 29, "Feeding Time" is out NOW!
Something Better is my Jasper-centric Steven Universe fanfic about her searching for meaning in life without a Diamond. It is set after the events of SU Future (canon compliant), and follows a horror-filled yet hopeful existential crisis over purpose, trauma, gem religion, and whether its possible for Jasper to live a good life. It is very much "angst", but with a happy ending. Click the link above to read!

thanks for taking up the fight, it really frustrates me how transmeds have taken pain as such an integral sign of "realness" that they can't even conceptualize a way to be trans without it, nor consider how societal transphobia plays into their own internalized beliefs.
I think it’s very convenient for transphobes that a core experience of transness is supposed to be deep self-hatred. Meanwhile, my observations of cis people are that the argument of “but this person is SUFFERING” don’t help (unless it’s a health insurance company, where you can flatly say, “Hormones and surgery are less expensive than a lifetime of ER visits and psych admits”).
Especially since, like... if someone transitioned decades ago and feels very comfortable in their skin, if they haven’t felt dysphoria for quite some time, that’s supposed to be the winning condition. That’s the thing we’re all supposedly aiming for. But is that person somehow less trans because dysphoria doesn’t play an active part in their life anymore?
If it hasn’t already, it’s going to lead to a culture of bullying where any trans person who seems too self-confident or happy is going to get attacked as “not trans enough”. Which is the absolute opposite of helpful. We’re already in a world where health insurance companies hire private investigators to stalk depressed or traumatized people on social media so they can find a picture of them smiling and cut their benefits off.
But, well, I’m just a cis queer who keeps having sneaking moments of rage, a la Pat Califia’s “I’m very fond of the concept of choice as the basis for sexual preference. This point of view is unpopular in an era in which every claim for gay rights is bases on pseudoscientific sulking about how we can’t help being queer; we’re just born that way. Thanks, but I don’t want to receive my civil rights as a charity fuck bequeathed on me by my genetic superiors.”

your zootopia analysis is very good, i just got it linked to me. it points out something that i've always felt, that the film avoids talking about the true origins of unjust hierarchies and their outcomes by essentially saying that the world is divided into black men and white women, who, because "life is complicated" in this comforting way, both have their advantages and disadvantages.
Ahhh thank you so much for reading it and I’m glad it resonated with you ;; It’s easy for ppl to dismiss this movie as just a fun Disney movie that we shouldn’t think too deeply about but then when you consider that police officers use this movie for racial bias training (um....) and children are shown this movie in school(1 of the articles I cited was from “comparative education review” and was specifically talking about how teachers should use this movie to teach children) not to mention subliminal messages that are absorbed even through casual media consumption.......yeah
