“irreplaceable”
the one word where morty figured out this wasn’t really rick.
and no wonder morty believes rick could just up and replace him any day. because there’s infinite versions of him, after all. because there’s infinite other things that are better than him. because, for the longest time, every other day, rick kept on telling him how replaceable he is.
no wonder he was scared that hug wouldn't have been real.
but, truth is, rick would’ve jumped after him (if he had thought morty was in real danger).
truth is, rick would have performed in front of a crowd for him.
truth is, rick would anything, just about anything, for him. he would travel the longest distances just to get him back. he would spoil him with gadgets and gifts. he would forgo the chance to see his wife again just so he could spend the rest of the evening with him.
truth is, morty was wrong.

Morty: „I‘m afraid that if I jumped into a hole you wouldn‘t even bother jumping in after me. You‘d just stand there and watch.“
Me: wishing I could verbalize images so I could scream this whole moment from the top of my lungs

The "Fear No Mort" ending is brilliant because Morty's fear DID come true. Rick didn't jump after him--he just stood there and watched. But he wasn't trying to hurt Morty this time. I think he just didn't grasp the reality of the situation because he thought Morty's fears were something stupid, like spiders. And what Morty doesn't see is Rick choosing him over dwelling over the past.
That's therapy for you. Rick's finally starting to move on.

creators saying in the behind the episode vid that they wrote diane according to what she'd actually be like as rick's wife, and not according to what morty would imagine her as. this is FANTASTIC to know actually.
she's a woman who can give it back to rick. who can be sarcastic and witty with him. she's intelligent in a way that's independent of being with rick, who finds charm in his nihilistic philosophy. she isn't this perfect obedient housewife. she has grit and drive and opinions that don't match with rick's and that makes her compelling. i am 200% more invested in her character after her added screen time.
what i mean to say is that diane has agency, and i am so fucking relieved about that.

It was pretty dark that it was revealed that Rick didn't bother entering the Fear Hole to save Morty in the first place, but the fact that Rick went back to it after being told Diane was in there, and not only refused to go into it, but pinned Morty's photo to the wall (a photo he now keeps in his wallet) shows that Rick *is* moving on and healing from her death. His family here and now are what matter.

ok my second semi coherent thought on the finale is that my brain is exploding over rick carrying a polaroid of morty in his wallet because it's adorable and also one of the most grandad ass things ever. if im remembering correctly it looked like a school picture. like morty got his yearbook picture taken and rick was like "yeah i want a copy of that" and paid real american dollars to the highschool (or maybe just stole one from beth and jerry who knows lol) to get a physical fucking photograph of his grandson to put in his wallet I AM GOING TO SOB

Just finished rewatching fear no Mort. Crying. Vomiting. Sobbing. Morty's greatest fear is that Rick doesn't care about him, when Rick cares so so so so so much. I would even go as far as to say he cares about Morty more than anyone else. He could've just walked away if he didn't care about Morty. But he stayed and immediately sounded happy when Morty was shown to be fine. He even tried to hug Morty back...but Morty was terrified that if Rick hugged him back he would still be in the hole...
The fact that Rick didn't jump into the hole when Morty told him not to, even if he could've seen Diane again. The way he has a picture of Morty in his wallet, the fact that it's well worn out, the fact that it's in the front pocket, the fact he walked away looking so proud of his grandson...he immediately disproved what Morty was scared of and Morty didn't even see it. I...I cry
