i've seen a lot of dp fans in the dpxdc fandom talk about not having access to comics so here. it's completely free, good quality scans (for most things), basically any dc comic you could want is there. you should have an adblocker but the ads aren't the worst if you don't, just noticeable and annoying. you're not gonna get a virus, i've been using the site for years, as have many other fans.
if you genuinely want to read the comics, take advantage of the sites comic fans have been using. there's new and old stuff and everything in between. crossovers too. whatever you want to read, you'll find there.

Happy Juke Jeudi! I wanted to list a few juke Christmas themed fics for this Juke Jeudi for anyone that might be interested. I got a little help from @missjoolee and @preoccupied-educator. I’ve read most of these but not all. The following are listed in word count/size order, shortest to longest.
links under the cut
Peppermint and Chocolate   by  sanssssastark  rated T
He’s wanted to kiss Julie since he was thirteen years old and waiting three years to kiss someone leads to expectations of what that kiss might be like. Turns out, it was way better than every fantasy he ever had. Her lips were soft and warm and her hand clutched at his arm, curling around his bicep and he wished he’d worn a shirt without sleeves because he’d have given anything to feel her touch against his skin. The kiss was everything he imagined it would be.
He just never thought it would leave him this confused.
Christmas lodge by darylvdixon not rated but it’s G
Julie and Luke meet when both their families book to spend Christmas in a lodge on the mountains. It's love at first sight and they spend the whole of their holidays together.
Let Your Heart Be Light by MamiRugbee rated T
With Christmas approaching, Julie decides she wants to pay a visit to Emily Patterson. Unfortunately, Luke realizes things aren’t exactly how he remembers them.
call me babe for the weekend by blushandbooks rated M (and locked for ao3 members)
Julie Molina, Grammy-winning popstar and reluctant Seattle native, returns home to her family and old friends for Christmas - and also to escape rumors and drama back in Los Angeles.
Old friends include Luke Patterson: The ex-boyfriend she left behind for LA and the promise of a blossoming music career. Only, the music career is not what she wanted it to be, and Los Angeles has turned from a welcome escape to an unlikely prison, and the only place she wants to run to is the place (and the person) that knows her best.
At the end of the day, she'll just run back to LA and forget about Seattle all over again.
But the city, and Luke, have more of a grip on her than she expected.
Blame It On the Mistletoe by Courty rated T
In the two years since they met, Julie and Luke have been dancing around the connection between them, both too afraid they'll ruin the other's life they've worked so hard to build.
Good thing they have some friends who decide a little Christmas magic is in order.

all i want for christmas is you by ruzekhalstead rated T
when julie finds herself in a situation where she needs luke to come home with her to celebrate christmas with her family, he is more than happy to oblige. too bad julie's already in love with him, and not sure when she stopped pretending.
holiday au
"the entire family is getting together for christmas and she just assumed i was bringing my boyfriend and then when i tried to explain, she mentioned you by name and i just kind of blanked and basically, my whole family thinks you're my boyfriend and you're coming to spend christmas with me."
"cool. when do we leave?"

Ladder to the Stars: A Juke Christmas Story by SeaStarStories rated T
Julie books a quiet winter retreat, but a typo has her turning up at the wrong cabin. Then a major snowstorm forces her to stay with Luke, whether she likes it or not. The problem is she likes it.

'Tis the Damn Season (hear me out) by IMaketheMonsters rated M
There’s nothing like coming home the week of Christmas and discovering you’re still in love with a worm-eater.
OR: the Home for the Holidays!AU that no one asked for
those cold December nights by Labyrinthinee rated M
Sure, Luke's life hadn’t turned out exactly how he wanted it to.
If anybody had told his eighteen-year-old self, that ten years down the road, he’d spent a Friday evening at his friend’s home, not on stage at some shady club, rocking his heart out, Luke would’ve never believed them. But, he couldn’t say that he was unhappy. He had a good job, amazing friends and was invited to dinner at his parents’ place once a week. So, to be frank, he wouldn’t change a thing.
Of course, that's when Julie Molina stumbled back into his life.

the lucky one (i think it might be you) by itsagamefortwo rated T
“So you know who I am then,” it’s not really a question but Luke shrugs anyway, turning to glance at her quickly before looking back at the road.
“And you know who I am,” he pauses so long Julie thinks that’s all he’ll say on the matter but then he speaks again, and she can just make out the hints of a smile through the shadows on his face, “Reggie posts a lot on instagram stories. You’re in a lot of them.”
“I recognised your hat. From your christmas card,” she offers and feels her own lips pulling into a smile at his bark of laughter.   aka julie needs to get the hell out of la for a few days and finds herself in a small town with a familiar face just as a snow storm rolls in.

While You Were Sleeping by ICanSpellConfusionWithAK rated T
AU of the romcom While You Were Sleeping.
Julie doesn't have a lot going for her other than her fantasies about Nick, the cute guy she sees at work and her dreams of marrying him one day. When she saves his life only for him to end up in a coma with his family thinking she's actually his fiancee things get really complicated really fast. They get even more complicated once she meets his brother Luke and the two start to fall for each other. Julie just needs to wait for Nick to wake up and get back to her normal life only things are never that simple. It's time for Julie to decide what...and who...she really wants.

Merry Ex-Mas by Bluefire510 rated T
The one thing Julie Molina hates more than Christmas is Luke Patterson, her former boyfriend and current pain in the ass.
But when her little brother and his best friend embark on a journey to the North Pole for Operation: Save Santa, she's forced to team up with her ex to wrangle them back home in time for Christmas.
It goes as well as expected...
Inspired by the book 'Ex-Mas' written by Kate Brian.

If you like...
Dramas with a handsome (and rich / slightly traumatized in some way) male lead, falling head over heels in love with a pretty, hardworking female lead (who don't need no man to make her happy, but secretly likes it when he's nice to her). He tries to woo her, but she's stubborn and doesn't fall for him right away, so he has to work hard to earn her affections (and he likes that).

I've been struggling with my LGBTQIA+ identity lately, and I need some help. I'm genderfluid, my gender changes frequently, mainly encompassing men, women, non-binary/gender-neutral, and agender/gendervoid. I'm transmasculine, presenting androgynously. I prefer gender-neutral titles like Mx. over Mrs. or Mr. I like he/they, I have some dysphoria with feminine pronouns, so I use them less. I like neopronouns but don't use them much since most people IRL aren't familiar with them.
I'm having an identity crisis that was caused from stress from school and work. So, I'm like re-inventing my identity. I need name ideas. The individual is genderfluid, preferring gender-neutral names. I'm passionate about social justice, inclusivity, and personal growth. I have diverse identities and academic pursuits, expressing creativity, intellect, and empathy through fanfic writing. I value knowledge and aspire to be a nurse. Any name ideas?
Sure thing!

hi do you have any art or media recs of desi gay guys or trans guys?
I can't remember any off the top of my head for trans guys. But there's def Shubh Mangal Zyada Savdhan and Badhaai Do in popular media for gay Desi guys.
There are many more niche movies and series out there , even on regional level. There are cute short stories on YouTube for you to look up.
Also, you may not know but that famous double take song by Dhruv is about mlm relationship and the artist is brown.
There's Salman Toor, the Pakistani artist who has many paintings which involve brown gay guys.
You can also go through our blog, look up tags to see artwork and media featuring Desi gays and trans men. Happy hunting!!!

"Absolutely Smitten" by dodie is SUCH A MABEL SONG.
"Thank God I'm Not You" by HIMALAYAS and "Golden Boy" by Tiny Little Houses are totally Stan songs (especially young Stan).
"Good Morning" by Two Door Cinema Club (the lyrics fits so fucking well, what) and "Erase Me" by Ben Folds Five are for Fiddleford, if you count him. Also rather well-known "Rat" by Penelope Scott - spoken to/about Ford from Fiddleford's perspective.
"The Last Of The Real Ones" and "Immortals" by Fall Out Boy, "Space Oddity" by David Bowie and "Ignorance" by Paramore are perfect for Ford and Fiddleford's relationship (if you headcanon it as purely platonic), pre- and post-portal incident.
I guess that you already have a bunch of Ford ones, but I can share my favorite portal Ford songs - "The Other Side" & "Iron" by Woodkid, "Spies" by Coldplay and "My Silver Lining" by First Aid Kit.
For the Pines as a whole - definitely "Family" by Mother Mother. Also "Frozen Pines" (ha) by Lord Huron and "Wires" by The Neighbourhood for the Stan Twins. Well, the whole "Strange Trails" album absolutely screams Gravity Falls.
No fiddauthor songs here as I tried to stick to the canon as much as I can. Hope you like it all! I can recommend some more if you want, I have tons of this stuff.
thank you for the songs! though I was only thinking of doing playlists for Dipper, Mabel, and Stan on top of my Ford playlist, plus the Pines family as a whole. sorry if i didn't explain that correctly haha. I really appreciate the songs you put here though, and will add the ones that make sense for the playlists I'm doing.

hey!!!! I know you've done a lot of sebchal fic recs already, but there's something interesting about a setting of young Seb and old Charles, so i wanted to ask you whether you've been reading anything similar and what are your thoughts on that, so far I've only read one called "to be wild to be free" but it has stopped updating ever since seb's retirement announcement so🥲🥲
Anyway i hope it's not too much trouble for you 😘 and appreciate your time and effort
Hello! ❤️👋🏻 No trouble at all, I'm happy to help! Thanks for the ask 🥺
Off the top of my head there's one that fits the bill pretty perfectly. Basically the premise is time travel shenanigans, so a 30 year old Charles from 2027 meets a 23 year old Seb from 2010.
That's kind of the big standout fic in the fandom (that I know of) that plays with that trope. Not exactly the same but I've also read this time travel based fic where Charles jumps through his shared past and future with Seb and it was quite good! I can see the appeal (I mean, there's been a lot of posts/tags in the vein of like imagine Charles with young Seb in his 'bad boy' era so it's definitely an idea that's been going around in the community), and I think it's an interesting concept to explore, but personally, idk. I'm not hugely into age-swapping or gender-swapping or that sort of thing. I think the most appealing thing to me is just them, the way they are, the way things actually unfolded, and how that made them who they are and got them to where they are. (If anything, I'd kind of like to read a future fic with a Charles in his mid to late 30s and a 40-something Seb, or maybe even a bit older 🤔 Just two old men being domestic. Seb having to wear reading glasses when he's reading books or doing crosswords or something. Charles with that Ryan Reynolds-style salt and pepper look 😭)
Actually, now that you've mentioned it, I should probably try and work on an updated fic rec at some point. The thing is I want to rec things I've personally read, and I guess I haven't read that many fics, especially the longer ones, or like started and then never got around to finishing, so I'd have to do some housekeeping first. I'll look into it tho 🤔

I Need Bookrecs but I can’t Just look any up cause all I get is booktok stuff :/
please help
Well I can recommend some things I/people I know personally enjoy! I don't know what you like, so I can't tailor them specifically to you, but hopefully it's still a helpful start :)
(and if anyone would like to reblog with their own additions, that's welcome to!)
A Chorus of Dragons by Jenn Lyons: A series I've talked about a lot recently. High Fantasy with incredibly complex and thorough worldbuilding, following Kihrin, a thief raised in a brothel as he discovers an unwanted royal heritage and the knowledge that he is destined to destroy the world. With an entire cast of engaging, unique characters (several queer in various ways) that drive the story, follow along as past lives are uncovered and these people who want nothing more than to live in peace are forced to fight for that right and figure out how to save humanity from the jealous hubris of people who have lost sight of what horrors can be justified for the greater good.
The Memoirs of Lady Trent by Marie Brennan: A series written like memoirs by Isabella Trent, the most famous and accomplished dragon naturalist ever who redefined the world and how dragons are understood with her accomplishments. But before she can be recognized, she had to establish herself in the field as a young woman in a time when women can't even vote--but she refuses to give up and travels the world for her passion, recounting the places she's been, people she's met, cultures she's glimpsed, and dragons she's studied. Very engaging and grounded, realistic in its depictions, isn't afraid to tackle topics like how harmful the "not like other women" idea is and how gender roles are detrimental to everyone.
I Keep My Exoskeletons to Myself by Marisa Crane: I haven't read it, but my partner loves it. In this world, you gain a second shadow when you commit a crime, and Kris has one. And when her wife dies in childbirth, their new baby gains a shadow, too. Told as though Kris is talking to her dead wife, it examines grief, resistance, surveillance and prejudice, and is undoubtedly much better than I'm making it out to be with my vaguely informed knowledge.
The Bone Houses by Emily Lloyd Jones: A standalone about a girl trying to provide for her siblings as a gravedigger, one of the only ones left in her small village who's still cautious of the supposed undead magic on its outskirts. But when a map-maker with an unclear past shows up offering money in exchange for guidance to the fabled locations, she can't turn it down. Explores death and grief and learning to live on without the people you care about, very sweet and introspective.
Ordinary Monsters by J.M. Miro: The beginning of a new series, following two boys, Marlowe and Charlie, as they're discovered and taken to a mysterious institution for their magical gifts that allow them to access--in their unique ways--the space between life and death. But there are secrets at this institution and misguided ideas of how best to save everyone from the shadowed figure hunting down little Marlowe, driving their new small band of friends to action to try and keep everyone safe. This book is slow and deliberate, but charming; the kids all act their age and there's no romance, but plenty of finding and choosing your family.
The Expanse by James S.A. Corey: Phenomenal sci-fi set hundreds of years in the future; people are colonizing Mars and a marginalized, oppressed class of people live in the Belt. Tensions run high between all of them, but James Holden is just getting by as an ice hauler before his ship is blown up and he and a few others find themselves at the center of a conspiracy. An important woman's gone missing and when she's found, the very foundations of their world are shaken as a physically impossible biohazard rewrites history and science, taking the story to places beyond where the characters ever saw themselves going. I haven't read it myself, but my dad has and I've seen the show (which is incredible) and I really want to read it myself. Cast of distinct characters and the show is one of the most scientifically realistic out there
Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto: A short, bittersweet standalone about grief. Following Mikage as she processes the death of her grandmother, she becomes close with one of her grandmother's friends from a flower shop and his mother, finding herself again and learning to live with it. Notable for its casual depiction of a trans character (that mother) in this book from the 1980s. It's a lovely read, introspective and thoughtful.
The Black Witch Chronicles by Laurie Forest: I'm not caught up with this one, but it starts following Elloren Gardner, granddaughter of the last prophesied Black Witch--but she doesn't have a single spark of magic in her blood. So she's starting at a new University to become an apothecary, but there finds her beliefs about the world--and her people's superiority--challenged as she's forced to room with two winged icarals, who she doesn't think even deserve to be here. The world turns out to be much more complicated than she thought and she needs to figure out where she actually stands. A high fantasy with a more in-depth world building, but I've only read the first 2 books so far. And in the first Elloren has a lot to unlearn, so prepare to cringe at her actions and thoughts for a hot minute--but the magic and politics of the world I remember being quite interesting.
Babel by R.F. Kuang: I've spoken about this frequently; a standalone about colonialism and language. About the literal power of words and necessity of violence. Follow young Robin Swift, taken from China as a child and given a new name so England can send him to Oxford, where his language can be used to power magical silver bars and strengthen the empire. But this exploitation of him and the people he's come to think of as family rests heavy on him, and a series of experiences drive his thoughts towards revolution and pain. Warning, this is a heavier book, especially for those who have personal experience with language/culture loss and disconnect, with the effects colonialism.
The Martian by Andy Weir: A standalone about an astronaut who gets stuck as the only person on mars when his crew has to flee the planet when a storm hits. Trying his best to survive alone until someone can hopefully come get him, the story is told through his Log entries--and he is quite the little shit of a narrator. Surviving on humor and fuck it we ball mentality, he's either going to survive and be famous for it, or die on mars and also be famous for that. An incredibly fun read that touches on the bonds of humanity and what we'll do to help others, and how hard people will fight to survive and keep their hope alive. This was also turned into a movie, and not a bad one!

red dead redemption is ruining my brain, so have some recs (yes okay it’s all mostly charthur)
🐾 Blind Fortunes by Gingersnap741 [M, Fix-It, 264K, WIP]
“Hello there! Ah, I see you’re new around these parts. I’m old around these parts. Blind Man Cassidy is my name. If you’d like your fortune told, I just ask for a bit of gold.” He holds out a tin coffee can smothered in rust, full of empty, whistling desert air. Heat broils up around them and makes the horizon waver. - Arthur knows now, so many miles later, he never should have stopped. He never should have stopped along the trail, and he certainly never should have given that man any money. Damn this moment of charity, of weakness, and all the change it brought about.
🐾 Out of the Dark by sky_daybreak [M, Time Travel Fix-It, 144K, Complete]
Arthur knows he's dying, can feel the unstoppable pull of it, feels the spirit appear behind him to take him along. And yet, he finds he does not want to die. There is so much that went wrong, so much he regrets and he wishes, with all his being, he could change it. Could at least ensure those that managed to get away really make it out alive.
A second chance, he asks, begs, really. Just give me the chance to save them.
The being behind him pauses and Arthur can't look away from the moment he's frozen in, staring at the dark mountainside, aching to see the sun rise just one more time.
One chance, the spirit seems to whisper, voice satin soft. Make the most of it.
🐾 Waves Wash Over by ClockworkCourier [E, Time Loop Fix It, 15K, WIP]
And if you had a choice? asks the stag. Would you choose this? Rest, alleviation from your suffering, and the ability to watch over those who you have aided?
“You’re makin’ it sound like there’s an alternative.”
-
Arthur Morgan gets another chance. And another. And another.
🐾 like thieves in the night by shades [Series, E, 115K, WIP]
There are many things Arthur tortures himself over, unduly, but the way he so quickly and easily goes to pieces in Charles’ arms doesn’t seem to be one of them.
tciddaemina - series centered largely about the gang giving more of a damn about arthur, to very moving and satisfying effect
🐾 mine is clouds by ssstrychnine [T, Fix-It, 24K, WIP]
Tonight Dutch is leaning on the mantelpiece, smoking a pipe, and Hosea is in their single overstuffed armchair, nursing a cup of the boiled straw he calls tea. There's another man with them too. A stranger. Presumably the owner of the spotted mare. Tall and broad and impassive, in cross-stitched blue and tan. He has a black and gold feather braided into his hair, the match to the one in his horses bridle, and his skin holds all the warmth of the fire.
arthur and charles across a country, before and after
🐾 observance by rojohbi [Series, E, 48K, WIP]
Charles doesn’t particularly like Arthur, but thinks that maybe that’s not quite accurate. He doesn’t trust Arthur, but wants to like him enough that it’s making Charles somewhat wary. Hesitant to look too long, to look at all.
🐾 More Ghosts Than People by KBstories [Series, E, 14K, WIP]
"It's familiar and yet different, Charles muses, those little details that are new the same ones that have shifted his life just so: the soft humming in his back, a second set of hoof prints beside Taima's, leading all the way back to a camp that, somewhere down the line, became something like home in his mind."
A collection of calm moments before all hell broke loose.
🐾 Valuables by surveycorpsjean [E, John Marston/Arthur Morgan/Charles Smith, 27K, Complete]
John always wants what he can’t have.
tciddaemina - honestly a one of a kind fic with absolutely amazing characterization. even if you think it isn’t your thing, read it.
🐾 Helping Hand by Magisey [E, Basically PWP, 3K, Complete]
It doesn’t matter that his throat hurts. It doesn’t matter that he can hardly swallow. It doesn’t matter that a handful of hours ago he’d been slowly dying with a rope tight across his trachea.
What matters is the image of Charles, with the sun burning on his shoulders like a devil, face cast in shadows. What matters is the look of indignant rage that pinches Charles brow, the casual, meticulous speed in which he dispatches Arthur’s captor. What matters is the sweet, dizzying air filling his lungs, and the delirious thought that passed in his head -
I don’t know this man.
🐾 Mercy a Thing for Gentler Climes by TheWaffleBat [E, Werewolf AU, 107K, Complete]
Arthur let himself soften, turned to keep his eyes on the fire that glowed warm against the biting cold of the morning. “I know,” He said. “Things ain’t good for us right now, but… it ain’t safe. You know what the O’Driscolls are like, for folk like me.”
“I’ve watched you kill, Arthur,” Said Pearson, and there was a flicker of that old fear deep in his eyes, never quite gone away. The smartest part of him still that blustering navy man taking command of the cooking to hide how terrified he was of them. Fear that was faint, but still sour, on the still air. “I’ve seen what you do to idiots who pick fights with us. You werewolves aren’t that fragile.”
“We ain’t that strong, neither,” Arthur told him.
The Pinkertons have been lost in the snow, and the law has bigger game on its mind. The O'Driscolls aren't as easy to lose.
🐾 American Spirits by werewolfsquad [M, Shapeshifter AU, 30K, Complete]
There was a rumor that Dutch van der Linde sold his soul at a crossroad in exchange for the shapechanging beasts that followed at his beck and call. Frankly, Arthur didn’t buy it. He followed Dutch and Hosea because they fed him. Some deal with a devil had nothing to do with it.
🐾 rimward bound by shades [T, Star Wars AU, 3K, Complete]
A means to an end, Dutch had said. So many folks were willing to write Hutts off as venal, selfish slavers - tin pot kings greedily ruling over whatever outer rim dust bowls they landed on. Dutch, though. Dutch was supposed to be different.
And finally a special mention for a fic that isn’t charthur but is so goddamn well written that I can’t rec RDR and not add it to the list.
🐾 Goddamn Cougars by Mecceisme [E, OC-Insert Time Travel, 39K, Complete]
Waking up in a field terminator style is not her idea of a good time but it beats dying, she supposes. If there's no way back (or forward?) she'll just have to do what she does best and survive in this wild western hill billy hell. And if that goddamn deathless cougar would quit stalking her, that'd be just swell.
She's got enough problems without being stalked by random wildlife and she's pretty sure that poor guy with the stalker stag is in the same boat. Maybe there's a support group they can join because this is getting ridiculous.

“…ah- Ah!”
Your boyfriend smirked as he held the buzzing toy gently against your swollen clit.
“That feel nice?” he murmured, gently rolling the tiny bullet in slow circles.
You could barely respond as more desperate whimpers and moans fell from your lips.
Mark had made the suggestion to add some new toys to the bedroom only a few days ago, and you were a more than willing participant in his experimental techniques. It began with a few bullets, a rose, and some rabbits, each silicone companion more thrilling than the last. Every fluttering, sucking, vibrating sensation had you melting at his touch. You weren’t sure how much more you could take. But, if the look in his eyes was any indication, you knew you were in for a long night.
“That’s my good girl,” Mark gazed down at you with lidded eyes, smiling and drinking you in.
“Mmm— Mark!” you cried, arching your back into his touch. Your clit was buzzing with warmth, each new angle sending jolts through to your thighs. Mark’s free hand held your hips in place, not allowing you to shy away from the pleasure.
“You like that, sweet girl? You’re dripping for me,” your boyfriend cooed, pressing open-mouthed kisses against your throat.
You nodded and shifted your hips, writhing in pleasure.
“Mark, please,” you mumbled, “please let me—ah!”
Suddenly, the fluttering sensations intensified as Mark’s nimble fingers covertly adjusted the setting, effectively knocking the air out of your lungs.
“What was that, baby? Use your words.”
You bit your lip as your fingers gripped desperately at your boyfriend’s strong shoulders.
“Mark, p-please let me come…” you whimpered, clinging to his arm to hold him in place while you rutted against the toy.
Mark laughed softly at your shameless display. God, he was so in love with you.
He held out for another few moments, gently teasing you and making you chase the pleasure like a moving target. He loved seeing you worked up and frustrated because of his actions. After a few more minutes of sweet torture, he gave in to your pleas.
“Okay, pretty girl. Come for me, sweetheart.”
Mark clicked up the intensity one final time, the new wave of deep vibrations finally pushing you over the edge.
Your breaths became heavy as you rode out your high against the small but mighty toy, twitching at the slight overstimulation of his fingers. Mark’s eyes were locked on your afterglow expression, flushed cheeks and heaving chest. You collapsed against your pillow, thoroughly spent and sensitive.
Mark smiled softly at you.
“You liked that, huh?” he asked, endeared, as he carefully placed a kiss to your forehead and traced his thumb across your cheek. You smiled.
“What do you think, Mark?” you giggled, immediately pulling him close.
Mark nuzzled into your neck and placed soft kisses along your jaw.
“Let me know when you’re ready for round two, baby girl. There’s more where that came from.”

Japanese BL Starter Pack
Tumblr media
It’s been awhile since I dropped a rec list, so I am here today to share one that is very near and dear to my heart—a Japanese bl primer for those who are new to the jbl game. I created this for @neuroticbookworm to help her on her journey when she decided she wanted to start getting into Japanese works. The fandom (on Tumblr and generally) tends to focus primarily on Thai shows because they are the easiest to access for international fans, since Thailand is working its way toward world domination via ql media and wants us all to be able to watch. But there is a lot of great stuff to watch beyond the easy access Thai channels, and Japan is the country where this genre originated, so its shows are important for anyone who considers themselves a bl fan. Japan doesn’t cater nearly as much to the international audience so tracking down the shows sometimes takes some ingenuity and can-do spirit, but that’s part of the fun!
And so, the list! Bookworm is about halfway through it and having a ball, so I figured it was time to stop hoarding it and share it with anyone else who would like to dip their toes into jbl and isn’t quite sure where to start. A few notes:
I am not here to teach you about the deep roots of the jbl genre or give you a primer on yaoi manga. I am by no means an expert and there are other places to find that information. Start here with this great post by @nieves-de-sugui and then maybe wander over to @absolutebl to read up more on the evolution of the genre.
This list is by no means an exhaustive accounting of every important Japanese bl ever made; it is simply a nice sampler platter of the cream of the crop among various styles you will find in jbl. Watching through this whole list will not only expose you to some fantastic shows, but also give you a sense of what makes jbl unique and how the country’s style differs from others, and point you toward the types of jbl you’ll like most (they tend to put shows in pretty specific style and tone lanes and once you find the ones you like there are lots more where that came from).
If you’re coming to this post as a jbl lover and you don’t see your favorite here, I promise it’s not because I don’t love it very much; I simply had to make some choices to get this down to a reasonable shortlist. Feel free to leave extra recs for others to find!
I’m putting these in a loose suggested watch order that will take you through the various jbl lanes in a kind of popcorn style, because I always think it’s good to change it up so you don’t get too stuck in one mode, and it works its way up to most of the extremely Japanese stuff (you will know what that means by the time you finish). But do what’s in your heart and change up the order if you want, friends, I am not the boss of you!
Cherry Magic (Crunchyroll or grey)
Tumblr media

I believe everyone on Tumblr is pretty familiar with this one, which is not a coincidence—this is one of the most accessible jbls. Not in terms of actual access to watch it, mind you (we’ve all jumped through shady internet hoops to watch it) but in terms of its content and style. Cherry Magic is a classic workplace romcom with a magical twist, and it is charming af. It’s a great exemplar of Japan’s light and zippy comedy lane for bl—a lane in which, importantly, the romances stay chaste even when the actual plot is about sex, or lack thereof. My friend @waitmyturtles would kill me if I didn’t make sure you know that Cherry Magic also has a lovely follow up film. And bonus: there is now a Thai remake airing so if you watch the original you can get in on the discussion about the different adaptations between countries. This is pretty easy to find these days in all the usual places, but I strongly recommend watching it here.
Old Fashion Cupcake (Viki)

Moving on to a slightly more mature workplace romcom. Old Fashion Cupcake, another Tumblr favorite, is an age gap boss-subordinate romance, and it’s both very adult and somehow wholesome af at the same time. Sure, there is a lot of carnal desire going on here, but there is also a lot of wooing via fluffy pancakes. It’s a tight five episodes and a fantastic example of what Japan, with its extreme technical precision in writing, directing, editing, pacing, and acting firing on all cylinders, can do in two hours. There’s not an ounce of flab on this thing and you’ll want to watch it over and over again.

Time to get a little weird! Weird is a key feature of Japanese media, and lots of jbls explore unusual relationship dynamics rooted in complex psychology. This is the first show on the list that will likely feel very Japanese if you’re new around here—my advice is to lean into it and finish the show, even if you get uncomfortable along the way. In Japanese media, discomfort always serves a purpose. This is a high school story with a twisted relationship at its center, and I’m not saying any more than that. Don’t spoil yourself and go watch it! This one also comes with two sequels—one short second season and one movie—that continue from the original story. They are less essential but still excellent.
I Cannot Reach You (Netflix)

Next up, another high school tale, but with a totally different vibe. This show is kind of a revelation in its willingness to tell a story about overwhelming desire—including sexual desire—with young protagonists. It’s rooted in a classic but often misunderstood trope, friends to lovers, and takes the angst of it seriously, giving us a low stakes story that feels extremely high stakes to our leads. It’s also gorgeous and uses a classic Japanese visual style (bokeh) that you’ll be dying to learn more about.
His (Viki)

Time for a break from high school, and we’ll sprinkle in a movie for some added flavor. His is a jbl film featuring a second chance romance between a stoic, introverted man who moves to a remote town to start over, and his ex-boyfriend who follows him there unexpectedly, adorable child in tow. Importantly, this movie does not take place in what we often refer to as the “bl bubble” where homophobia doesn’t exist; the leads’ experiences of being gay men in a homophobic society are hugely important to the plot and themes of the story. It’s a beautiful film and I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched it. @bengiyo would surely also like me to tell you that this film follows a brief prequel show called His: I Didn’t Mean to Fall in Love about the characters originally meeting in high school; I do not think it’s really necessary to watch it but completists can start there.
The Pornographer series (Gaga)
By now you should be ready to get into some classic Japanese fucked up psychosexual material, right? Right! The Pornographer series is told in five installments in this order:
The Novelist, a six episode miniseries
Mood Indigo, a six episode prequel series
Spring Life, a 15 minute short
Pornographer: Playback, a two hour film
Spring Life Continued, a 15 minute short
Confused by that distribution model? So say we all; sometimes Japan likes to make us work for it to make sure we really appreciate its many gifts to us. The story across these installments is about a very difficult to love protagonist, what makes him the way he is, and the also-unhinged-but-in-a-different-way man who finally gets through to him. It’s an extremely satisfying love story and one of the best character arcs I have ever seen, full stop. For this one, you’ll want to just pull the word problematic out of your pocket and store it in a drawer; nearly everything that happens in this story is problematic and that’s the point. Lean in! All of these installments except for the film are on Gaga, if you get that far hmu and I will supply you with the final puzzle piece.
Our Dining Table (Gaga)
Tumblr media
You could probably use a break after those last two, so it’s time to shift over to a heart-tugging twofer: family trauma mixed with the cutest shit you’ve ever seen. ODT is an example of another classic type of Japanese show: the food drama (you will see the GOAT in this category at the end of this list). In Japanese culture, food is love, and the act of preparing food for your loved ones is a common path to romance. You’ll love this story about an isolated office worker who meets a pair of brothers, learns to cook as a way of connecting with them, and begins to heal from his own trauma as a result. The image above is a scan from the manga, which @troubled-mind curates to make extremely cool comparison sets like this one. Many jbls are faithful adaptations of yaoi manga source material, so it’s good to have a bit of familiarity with them.
Minato’s Laundromat (Gaga)

Japanese media loves to explore taboo, and often manages to do it in a way that is surprisingly light and chaste. This is an age gap romance between a teenager and his adult neighbor that explores internalized homophobia, emotional repression, and falling in love across seemingly impossible social chasms. It’s also a great example of old school yaoi seme-uke dynamics that still show up across the bl genre. Also, take my advice: end your journey with this one with the first season and just pretend season 2 doesn’t exist.
Eternal Yesterday (Viki)

Remember what I said about weird? Time to do that again, but with a heaping dose of grief and pain on top. It’s not a spoiler to tell you this show involves a major character death; a major character death is, in fact, the root of the entire story. This is a magic realist tale of first love turned tragic, and it will hurt and heal you. It is one of my favorite dramas of all time.
Restart After Come Back Home (Gaga)
And now for a break for your poor exhausted brain. This film is basically the jbl version of a Hallmark original movie, about a city boy who goes back home to the country and falls in love with a total sweetheart while working together on a farm. Enjoy it, bestie, you’ve earned it!
Tokyo in April Is… (Gaga)
Tumblr media
gif by @wanderlust-in-my-soul
You’ve probably noticed by now that emotional repression and failed communication are big themes in Japanese works. This second chance romance has plenty of both, and it’s a great example of a kind of muted emotional style that Japan does so well, where the surface of the story seems almost placid and calm even as deep emotion roils underneath. This one (and Eternal Yesterday above) are part of a special line up of jbls on Japanese channel MBS called Tonku (Drama) Shower. The shows air one after another in the same time slot on Fridays (in Japan, perhaps Thursdays for you depending on where you live) and you truly never know what you’re gonna get, but they’re all interesting. Warnings on this one for sexual assault and trauma.
The End of the World With You (Viki)
Time for sexy and weird again, but even more so! This has to be one of the most unique bls ever made; it goes to some truly divine and strange places, and it feels incredibly queer while doing it. Made by the same screenwriter/director of the Pornographer series with a lot of the same sensibilities, but in a more heightened apocalyptic setting. This one has existential angst, a road trip, a redemption tale, and a variety of interesting side characters in the mix.
What Did You Eat Yesterday? (Gaga)
Tumblr media
gif by @my-rose-tinted-glasses
Congratulations, you’ve reached the end of the list and your reward is watching one of the best bls of all time, and a perfect slice of life food drama to boot. WDYEY now has two seasons (along with a couple specials and a movie that fall in between) because the universe clearly loves us. You can now get it on Gaga for easy access but I’m partial to the versions over at @kinounaniresource for better subs. Wherever you watch, settle in to get cozy with Shiro and Kenji and make sure to always eat before you hit play.
