hello everyone! i think this is a LONG overdue intro/about me post since i've been on tumblr for a while already. well shit. better now and never i'm sam (flourdove is my handle on tumblr but i also use samsung fridge/fridgesung on some other sites) - but i go by anything. literally. i'm a queer man, he/they pronouns and chronically british (PST timezone!) (doesn't add up, right?) i draw, write (never), roleplay, occasionally make character rp templates & surf on tumblr. you can see me mostly reblogging stuff and occasionally rambling about my interests.

i'm quite awkward and self conscious on tumblr so if i take a while to respond (over 12 hours if i have been online that day!) or don't reach out very much (if you're a moot especially) (it takes me a whie to warm up) or come off odd somehow, that's probably it. however, do not hesitate to reach out to me and send an ask/message/ramble with me about stuff we're both interested in! i'm very very multifandom, to name a few: omniscient reader's viewpoint, villains duology by ve schwab, all for the game series, a variety of books, harry potter (mostly riddle era/tomarry!), wings of fire, uglies/impostors by scott westerfield, unordinary (the webtoon), im the grim reaper (the webtoon), greek mythology & epic: the musical, warrior cats (i've only read the first three books though, bare with me!) and many, many many more. i think i've dipped my toes into the COD soapghost ring + fast & the furious shit. thank you for reading all this! no idea how to end this post so see y'all around

Unordinary last name hcs

90% of these are me stealing headcanons from different people Something i always wonder about: do children typically inherit their last names from their mother or father? i personally don’t think john counts as an example because he didn't grow up with his mother and we don’t even know if william and jane were married. (+ i don't think we hear him be referred to with william’s last name) i believe that last names are based off of a family’s abilities? like, families with defensive abilities will have a last name relating to defensive stuff or whatever. anyways. i have specific nitpicks with last names, the letters they start with, and the way they roll off the tongue.

skipping JOHN for this post since DOE fits him well enough already. for ISEN, i’d have him have his last name be JAEGER. its a German surname that means ‘hunter’ and i think it just rolls off the tongue well too. i saw a couple people use it and i was like !! wow. that fits really well.  ARLO would probably be a French last name or something vaguely defense-related. imo names starting with A go pretty well with B last names, so, ARLO BASTION (a kind of fortification tower) or ARLO BEAUFORT (beautiful fortress).

BLYKE, i think would have a Chinese/Korean last name (personal hc that he’s Asian lmao). a few surnames i think that sound nice / sort-of fit him are: YUN  (korean - meaning governor), ZHU (chinese, meaning crimson) and lastly, LIANG (meaning a bridge or a beam). i tried to do some vague symbolism & references ot his ability on the last two !! was quite indecisive with blyke gfghj

SERAPHINA is the character i had the most trouble trying to find a suitable last name for, like, its just so hard. kept trying to find last names relating to ‘time’ that sounded right with her first name and it was atrociously difficult. some other hcs of other people were “levin” and another, “albrecht” that fits better but they didn’t ring right w me. i eventually ended up with KAIROS (meaning the exactly right time to do/say a certain thing in ancient Greek), and/or YULE (celebration of the winter solstice, doesn’t necessarily fit with the “time” theme but i thought it sounded nice) REMI i think would have a Japanese last name, since rei and remi are both Japanese names (rei meaning departed soul and remi meaning heavens, sky) A few fitting surnames i found are: AMETSUCHI (meaning heaven & earth) or TENKUBASHI (meaning heaven sky bridge). yep, lots of symbolism on the lightning ability.  tag w your uno last name hcs . i am hungry ;

One thing I really loved about the Impostors Series was that we got to know other cities and their specific culture. This was something I wondered about during Uglies, and it is super fascinating to see the different ways they all go, and their politics and all. Shreve, Victoria, Paz, Diego. I mean yeah, during the Pretties time, the differences were probably not as big because of the lesions, but still. Uglies was so focused on Tallys city (I am one of those people who believe Sealtec is Tallys city, by the way) and maybe Diego. It makes the world feel quite real. And yeah, I also love the idea of the city AIs.

the impostors series really opened us up to the world that we didn't get to see all that much in uglies! it was definitely really really fun to learn about the other cities though i mostly retained stuff from only paz & shreve since they played some bigger parts in the story. there's a lot i'm curious about diego's (the city) path after the mindrain because of diego's ai which was a VERY interesting character. uglies was definitely SUPER focused on tally's city/sealtec (+ a bit of diego) and while we didn't get to see much of the world like we did in impostors, it really did paint the details and felt like a real city. one of my favourite parts of the city was prettytown with all the cliques and stuff! and it felt super cool. city ais are so fun to think about because they are definitely reflections of their city in some way. they're all Very Distinct and that's what is so interesting about them! im super curious about tally's city and if they did get an ai - how it would be like. the thing is we don't really get a whole lot of tally's city post-mindrain anyway so! we will have to be stuck with our imagination and fanfics LMAO. omg i should try to write a fanfic for uglies/impostors, we don't have that many fics ahrag

I mean oh my god, as someone who had a lot of very dysfunctional, jealous but also close and somewhat homoerotic friendships with other girls due to being closeted even from myself bisexual at that time and also autistic, I related so much to the absolute train wreck that was their friendship.

Yes, Tallys romances with boys were actually, unlike a lot of other YA dystopias, well written and believable, but for me the heart of the series was always her and Shay, and the way Dr Cable and their dystopian worlds system puts them against each other. I love how Westerfeld really explored that, but also how at the end, they not just were suddenly back to everything being perfect, but that it took them a lot of time to heal their wounds.

I am sad for Tally and David that their relationship did now work out, but also I love how that moment in her talk with Frey kind of implies that Shay and Tally are now together.

omg yes. tally & shay still being together after 20 YEARS was a sucker punch to the gut (but in a GOOD WAY.) their friendshi pwas One Of A Kind especially w/the jealousy and homoerotic undertones.

i also, definitely agree that shay & tally were the main core of the series. everything kind of branched from them, their budding friendship in book 1 and everything that happened after being a result from being pushed together due to the circumstances of their world which both push them together and also. pull them apart (for them to pick the pieces back up later. they definitely took some time to heal) <33 they are so so precious.

also! tally's relationships with boys were p fucking realistic and i thoroughly enjoyed that because it really isn't seen often, even outside of the dystopia genre. i'm also sad about tally/david but tally/shay makes up for it <3 even if canon doesn't say it outright in impostors at that point they are Practically Together

Random questions fairy! What’s your favorite trope to write? And is there a character/fandom you really want to write for but haven’t yet?

aaaaa that's actually a really hard question since different tropes can be so delicious in so many different ways. i really love high-tensioned high-stakes stuff so i'd say my favourite is time travel actually!!! its so fun to work out the hijinks of the story when there's some time manipulation involved. time travel fix it is also really fun, having a semi-omniscient character meander through experiences they've already had before and earlier versions of people they knew/know. i do think that these tropes are difficult to be done well and when you're doing them: you should pay alot of attention to the details of the story. i always want to keep the decisions of the character i'm writing realistic and not too far out there . . . that requires me to know the character's mind well and might put some roadblocks in story progression (like romance, if i'm doing some romance between two people who have a sour relationship well. i can't really force it between them or it'll seem unnatural and rushed.)

there are multiple fandoms/characters i would LOVE to write for but i don't find the time to, + the lack of confidence that i would be able to properly portray that character accurate to themselves and how i view them. i mainly stick to oc stories because of that. to name a few, unordinary, top gun (soft icemav. we love them), omniscient reader's viewpoint (i have a couple joongdok fic outlines in the work!!) MAD (most ancient dream) and secretive plotter have my heart, i just need to figure something out with them.

Hey sorry I just stumbled upon your Impostors series thoughts and can I just say! Hi!! Hello!! I am so happy so see someone else who is similarly climbing the walls about the AI characters as well!! I loved Diego so much they're terrible they're morally incorruptible they've never made a good decision in this whole series they're the only reason shit got done ever; and they also always have that subtle condescension towards humans going while clearly wanting to help (1/3)

And I just think that's an incredible way of Scott to integrate both the hyperlogical nature of an AI and the ways in which their logic vastly differs from what we know as normal human logic. And Paz! Paz is so great too! I think it was unironically my fav character in the series because it feels like its both the friend you have to explain everything too and the super supportive partner in crime. (2/3) And more than that I love how Paz is Diego’s foil in the way that it trusts humans and is willing to work with them not just for them (Side note- I love the pronoun difference between Diego’s they/them and Paz’s it/its and how that hints at their whole “should we literally create humans” divide later in the series). If you ever want someone to geek out with over these characters or even just Imposters/ Uglies in general hmu (3/3)

omg hello! sorry for taking so long to reply and post this ask lol, it took me quite a while to formulate one. i'm in absolute glee that someone else has similar thoughts as me on the AI characters in impostors RAAA its so nice since the fandom is so small. i love diego's characterization and they're fucking insane. you hit all the points of why i love them SO much - especially the condescension part. they want to help, they want to do good but their own sense of what's best and morality is Fucked Up. and that's why i love them and their 'the ends justify the means' way of thinking (almost! not exactly. you can't sum up their character so easily) oh god i love paz. like its just dopamine-inducing to see on-screen (on-page), its so sweet. they're definitely my favourite character as well, and frey is so real for it being her favourite ai LMAO. paz and diego being foils to each other makes them so interesting, i love them so so much !!!! i do find it cool how in uglies diego (the city) is like utopian and all that compared to tally's OG city (we never learn the name) (huh) but in impostors diego (the ai) is one of the antagonists. i like to think of the AIs as almost reflections of their city and its interests and needs so its certainly quite the train of thought to think about how far diego (the city) and its people have gone - and society in general. tysm for sending in an ask! its always super fun to find people to actually TALK to in super small fandoms that you're in. feel free to message/send me another ask if you ever feel like talking!!!!
