“She can be Duckling too!”
Winnie pushed the little ducks in her plastic kiddie pool around, making them tap Simon’s leg that was in the water. He looked down at the little mini you in between his calves, sitting against the very small wall of the little pool and admiring the little octopus in her hand.
The sun was beaming down and even with the windows open, Simon was sweating up a storm. What better idea than to take out the foot tall kiddie pool, fill it with water and toys so he and his girls can stay cool? Even though he wouldn’t be sitting on a chair next to the pool with his feet in the water, he still had his dark blue swim trunks on and a white t-shirt, sunglasses on his eyes but his gaze never left the water. Even a moment’s look away can kill, he knew it was able to happen.
Winnie was sat in her light green swimsuit with her hair messily done up, Simon had pulled it into a little high ponytail but there were strands poking out from the top. The curls she got from her mom always gave Simon a little tug on his heart - if he could tell Winnie’s mom one thing right now, it would be that her daughter was happy.
Mellie cooed from her snug seat between Simon’s feet, little hands splashing down her smaller toys into the water.
“Or Duckie.” Winnie suggested. “I like Duckie, Melsie can be Duckie.”
“What if I like a different nickname?” Simon asked, leaning forwards to adjust Mellie’s mini boonie hat, purple with flowers, to make sure the sun didn’t hurt her little face. He almost heard his mum in his head, reminding him that all children need sunscreen, even babies!
Winnie hummed a little, splashing down one of her bigger yellow rubber ducks, the water spraying on Mellie. “I like Duckie.” The baby giggled, splashing her own duck back at her sister. The older girl smiled wide. Simon glanced up at the sky before back down to his daughters, deciding to grab the sunscreen stick beside his chair. He uncapped it, holding a hand out for Winnie. “C’mere, little love.”
The five year old glared at her father, almost grumbling as she stood out of the now lukewarm water, moving out of it so he was able to reach her. Her little hand was so small compared to his huge bear paw of a hand, yet he held hers with care as he began to smear sunscreen on her little face. Her nose scrunched, eyebrows furrowed as she complained, “I’m fine, Daddy!”
A stripe of sunscreen down her nose almost made Winnie stomp her foot if it wasn’t for Mellie giggling. The big sister was now distracted as she peered around Simon’s legs to see what the baby was doing, he wiped the sunscreen stick on every showing part of skin on his daughter, knowing that his mother would come from the grave to kill him if he didn’t. “Melsie!” Winnie squealed, a smile on her face, he could feel the baby’s head hit his leg to look for her big sister.
His nose twitched as he recognized how he thought of his mother more now, and not in the way he used to. He used to dream about her tears, her arms shielding him from his father, her hands settled on his face to tell him that it’s okay. Now, it was like she was making her presence known by forcing him to think about her again.
Simon Riley wanted his mother and brother to meet the little girls playing in the water in his backyard, wanted his mother to have been here while you were pregnant with Mellie. He wanted his mother here to hold him one last time, and tell him that he was doing this right - because he was flying blind.
As soon as the last swipe of sunscreen went to Winnie’s hand, she tugged herself from his grasp and got back into the pool, purposefully sitting in front of her sister in the water. She began to pull her bigger plastic dolls and rubber ducks towards Mellie, a smile on her little face. The toy haul was short-lived when Simon pulled Mellie up and out of the water, settling her on his lap so he could see her face. The baby scrunched her nose just like her sister did, all he had to do was swipe the sunscreen on her feet, hands and face since her swimsuit covered the rest of her little body. He was a little more gentle with Mellie, holding her back as she shook her head, trying to escape the sunscreen. She let out a little huff, eyes that matched his stared at him with an intensity like his own. He was happy that Winnie didn’t stare as a baby, but Mellie stares like he does when he’s on deployment - like the person on the receiving end is going to die.
Please tell me there’s a way to make babies forget how to stare.
White streaks on Mellie’s skin meant she would be protected from the sun for at least another couple hours or so, he made sure to get her little chubby chin. The baby squealed a little, her hands always trying to grab for the sunscreen yet failing.
“Well, Wins, you call her Melsie,” The baby in question cooed at the nickname as Simon looked to his oldest daughter. “Why do you want her to have another nickname?”
“For you, Daddy!” Winnie smiled, brown eyes warm in the sunshine. He capped the sunscreen stick, tossing it to the ground before moving Mellie to have her actually sit on his lap, her back against his stomach. The baby began to kick out her legs, whining as he kept his hand on her belly, keeping her secure to his body.
Winnie pulled out a small duck from the pool, holding it up and towards Mellie, who cooed and reached for it. “Melsie’s mine, but I’m Duckling too! She can be Duckie or something, what do you want to call her?” Winnie looked up to her dad as her sister took the duck in her hand, curiously inspecting it. “She can be Duckie.”
“I like Bug.” He said, a smile on his face while Winnie lit up - her smile even wider.
“Buggie!” She declared, moving away from him and out of the pool, beginning to run around the small grass backyard.
Simon’s attention went to Mellie, who was now looking up at him and squinting. “Hi, Bug.” The baby babbled, lifting up her duck towards his face. He then picked her up again, moving down and placing her in the water in between his feet again. She kicked out her legs, splashing the water and giggling. She threw the duck down into the water, letting the water spray out of the little pool.
“Daddy!” Called Winnie, his head snapped up and whipped to his left, scanning the small yard for Winnie - his eyes widened.
Winnie stood by the little yellow shed, a wide smile on her face as she held up what looked like a kitten.
“Only my kid,” He mumbled to himself before picking Mellie up - who protested by screeching in annoyance - and placing her against his chest, water dripped down his shirt as he stood. “Winnie, put it down.”
“It’s a cat!” She exclaimed, the little thing squirmed in her harsh grasp. “Daddy, it’s a cat!”
“I can see that.” He answered, stalking towards his oldest daughter. He was not a fan of pets, definitely ones that his daughter probably scooped up out of the garden. “Put it down.”
Winnie’s nose scrunched again as she pulled the kitten back into her chest, the little thing barely even moved. “No.”
Simon almost stopped walking towards her, eyebrows furrowed. She had never defied him before, and he sure as Hell was not going to make a scene because he knew that if she cried, it would be over for him. He’s break instantly and do whatever she wanted. He took in a small breath through his nose. “Winnie, you need to put it down. It’s dirty.”
“She’s sick, Daddy.” Winnie mumbled, looking down at the ground as he finally reached her. He kneeled in front of her, she looked away. He could clearly see the kitten now, it was small and dirty - it looked barely a couple weeks old. His daughter met his gaze, her best puppy eyes being used as she whispered, “Can we help her?”
There was nothing wrong with cats, he just didn’t like them. Scratching up furnishings, hairballs, peeing everywhere - well, that was what his brother’s cat was like when he was a kid, before his dad found it and it disappeared. Simon shook the memory from his head before sighing, keeping Mellie farther from the cat since she was trying to reach for it - the baby squirmed in frustration.
He scrunched his nose too, trying to decide if doing this was a good idea. Yes, responsibility for Winnie and blah blah blah, but he had no idea if his wife would be okay with it. She was sleeping right now and he didn’t want to bother her now so it was just him, his daughters, and a sickly looking kitten his eldest found somewhere. He sighed. “Mum’ll decide what to do later.” His daughter’s face lit up. He glared at her. “She’s not going to stay here, Winnie. We’ll wash her up and get her medicine, but then she has to go back to her mum, okay?” His hand goes to brush a small strand of hair behind Winnie’s ear, her smile quickly faded.
“But… I want to keep her.” Her bottom lip quivered, he sighed.
“It’s not up for discussion. Go inside and hold it, don’t let it wander.” He stood then, Winnie darted away towards the back door. He looked down to Mellie, who stared up at him with an annoyed face. He found it incredible that she was more like him than Winnie was, he smiled to her. She didn’t like it.
He followed his oldest daughter inside, moving to grab a towel he had placed on the counter to dry off Mellie. He pulled off her boonie hat before wrapping her in the fluffy towel, he wanted to go back outside so he moved to the living room and placed her in the mesh-fenced play pen, lined with soft toys. The baby no longer made her upset face and cooed as she unraveled herself from the towel to begin to play. He moved away towards the kitchen, finding Winnie standing next to the sink, the little kitten in her arms hadn’t moved. His eyebrows furrowed before he opened a drawer and grabbed a tea towel, holding it on his hand and saying, “Give it here.”
“You’re gonna put her outside.” Winnie’s bottom lip trembled, he sighed.
“Gotta wash it, Duckling. It might be injured.” He explained. “I won’t take it outside, I’m gonna wash it upstairs. Go play with your sister for me, it’ll be as good as new soon.”
Winnie looked up at her dad, weariness in her eyes before she gently pulled the little creature from her chest and gently placed it on the towel in his hand. He lifted it towards his face, now noticing the black cat with a dirty white face was barely even breathing. He turned away from his daughter, moving towards the stairs as his other hand began to gently poke at the kitten’s face, trying to get it to respond. He glanced behind himself, seeing that Winnie had found her way into the playpen with Mellie, and turned back to the upstairs. Taking the stairs two at a time, he made it to the hall bathroom, which was decorated with pinks, blues, and greens. He moved towards the sink, rubbing the little kitten’s face to try and wake it up.
After a few seconds of rubbing its face, its eye opened and revealed a light yellow eye. The little thing shuddered, he frowned. He pushed the drain plug into the sink drain with his free hand, then starting the faucet with warm water. The kitten barely moved an arm, he noted how frail she looked. Probably abandoned by her mum.
“Alright, Missy, let’s getcha cleaned up, yeah?”
The little thing pawed a little at the towel, he settled her on the counter before shutting off the water so it was just a little water in the basin. He gently settled it in the water, using Mellie’s baby soap to wash its fur. The kitten was still in his hand, little yellow eyes watching the water. He washed its back, looking for fleas, finding none. He inspected its neck and face too, no injuries or fleas - it must have been malnourished, he could very distinctly feel its bones. He gently washed its little face, the dirt falling away and revealing white rings around its eyes. It almost reminded him of his mask.
As soon as he was confident that the kitten was throughly washed and not injured, he grabbed a hand towel from underneath the sink - something that would be a lot softer on the creature. It had closed its eyes as soon as he gently wrapped it with the towel, he moved the small bundle to his chest as he pulled the drain plug. The water drained as he left the bathroom, silently walking down the stairs and to the living room.
Winnie was standing in the play pen, watching him intently as he walked towards them. He saw Mellie on her back, chewing on an ear of a stuffed dog. He chuckled a little as Winnie asked, “Is she okay now?”
He looked down at the kitten’s head, seeing its ear twitch a little. “She’s fine for now, kiddo. We’ll keep her ‘til she gets a little bigger, but then she has to go somewhere else.”
She pouted a little before holding her hands out, “Can I have my kitty please?”
He laughed humorlessly. “No.”
His daughter made a noise of confusion. “I asked nicely.”
“Yes, you did. But it’s too sick for you to take care of.” He answered. “You can have it when it’s better.”
Winnie scrunched her nose and turned away, sitting beside Mellie and refusing to look at him. He looked down at the little kitten, sleeping away in its little cocoon. He sighed, not wanting to believe that his little girl was getting big enough to have tantrums.
He spent the rest of his day taking care of the little kitten, keeping it in an open cardboard box with a couple towels in it, it slumbered away after he fed it was little cow’s milk he had left in the fridge. He made a mental note to go to the market in the morning as he now held Mellie on his chest, bouncing a little on his feet as he neared her crib. She was sound asleep and in comfy colorful pajamas, her little hand gripped his shirt. He slowly peeled off the baby from his chest, laying her on her back in her crib. He gently pet her head, whispering a sweet good night before leaving her room.
He then walked down the dark hallway to Winnie’s room, her lamp illuminating her room as she laid in her bed, facing away from the door. He saw her green bear on the floor next to her bed, he quietly stalked into the room to grab it. As soon as he grabbed it, he almost jumped back when Winnie turned towards him, annoyance on her face. He held out the bear names Pricey to her, she took it.
“I’m not giving the cat away for fun, you know.” He whispered, kneeling beside her bed. “It’s for the best.”
She stared at him. “What if Mummy wants a kitty?”
He shrugged. “It’s not good a time to have a cat right now, honey. Mum’s still sick.” He hated not being able to help ease his wife’s pain, going through a miscarriage of a baby you really wanted was tough - it was rough for him too, but he put his children first to let you take the time you needed.
“Mummy’s been sick for forever.” She murmured, arms wrapped around her bear. “Why can’t she get better so I can have a kitty?”
He fought the urge to roll his eyes, moving to tug her blanket up to her chin. He spoke with a gentle calmness, “Remember when Mum told you you’re gonna have a brother?” Winnie nodded. “And then he went away?” His daughter nodded again, he sighed. “He put Mum in a lot of pain, both in her tummy and in her heart. She feels sick all the time,” He gently brushed Winnie’s curls around her ear as he looked into her brown eyes. “Mum just needs all the love she can get and a long time to feel better.”
“The kitty can love her.” She whined, pouting a little.
“Mum only feels better when you and Mellie and me love her, Duckling.” He was losing the battle, knowing that Winnie would end up winning by outsmarting him with her little kid brain. That’s when he had an idea. He retracted his hand from her head, saying, “Once the cat gets better, I’ll give it to Uncle Soap until Mum gets better. Then you can ask her about the cat, okay?”
This way the cat would get attached to Soap and never have to be back in the house. Great idea, hope he’s not allergic. You know what? I hope he is. It’s what he deserves for pranking my ass every chance he gets.
His daughter nodded, whispering, “Can you name my kitty, Daddy?”
His eyes widened a little, lips pressed into a thin line. “Why don’t you name it?”
“I don’t want to.” She shrugged, he sort of laughed.
“Alright, Duckling. We’ll call her Missy.”
The girl smiled. “What’s her real name then?”
His eyebrows furrowed, he grew confused. “What do you mean?”
“My name is Winter, but it’s also Winnie.” His daughter then yawned, her eyes fluttering to try and fight off sleep. He gently settled his hand on her cheek, her little hand sat on top of his.
He almost smiled, almost broke his straight face as he said, “Missile Launcher.”
His daughter smiled so wide as she giggled, “Okay!” Yep, she’s just like me.
“Alright, now go to sleep.” He leaned forwards and kissed her forehead.
He moved to stand but Winnie spoke, “Tell Pricey good night too, Daddy.”
He sighed, facing her bear and saying, “Good night, Pricey.” He gently pat his daughter’s face before he stood and turned to her lamp, turning it off. Her little nightlight beside the door now dimly illuminated the room, he whispered, “Love you, little love.”
She whispered a little, “Love you too, Daddy.”
He was silent when he left her room, closing the door behind him before making his way to his bedroom. He closed the door behind himself, his own lamp illuminated the room. You were curled into a ball on your side of the bed, his pillow tucked under your chin as you faced his side. He moved towards the bed, being careful of the cardboard box settled on the floor next to his side. He peered into the box, observing the little black kitten until he could see it breathing. He then got into bed, reaching to shut off his lamp before moving towards you.
He would be okay without a pillow to sleep on, but he would never be okay not holding you as you were in pain. He rested his head halfway on the pillow, his arms coming to pull you into him. You murmured in your medicine induced slumber, the sleeping pills giving you a while without pain. He kissed her forehead, gently brushing his hand down your back.
He’d ask you about the cat beside your bed later.

Hiii i love your work, for blurb night I was wondering if you could write something about babysitting someone’s kids with one of the drivers and someone in public mistakes you for parents bc they are unaware of you the driver is and you guys look like a cute family. It’s okay if not. Thank you in advance !!!!
Note: I have the biggest baby fever right now and I saw many cute videos that had Lando with kids, and I can't stop thinking about them, but since I have written a lot for him today, I'm doing Charles. For the plot of this, I gave him a niece, so let's pretend Charlotte and Lorenzo had a kid!
"Don't you look cute in that hat, Céline?", you cooed as you made sure it covered her head properly and that is wasn't too tight around her neck.
Charlotte and Lorenzo once joked about how the ideal Christmas present for them would be someone willing to look after their daughter for a few days as they took the time to have a little trip to enjoy just the two of them. You and Charles, however, weren't joking when you said you'd happily take Céline for the week while they recharged their batteries. Today, since it was sunny, you and Charles decided it would be nice to go to the park.
"Let's go, then!", Charles cheered, pulling the stroller closer to you so you could strap her in safely before you left your place.
"We are going to see the duckies - do you like duckies, Céline? And we can just sit in there and make some flowers bracelets, too, auntie Y/N will teach us", Charles spoke as you walked to the park, a few people noticing him but thankfully not making a big scene out of it.
"I keep thinking about the ice cream parlour, hopefully they gave my favourite", you admitted, kissing his cheek, "but the duckies are a great selling point, too", you winked.
You had been sitting near the benches for a little while, flower chain bracelets already done as Céline started getting hungry, "how about I go get your ice cream and you start on her yogurt?", Charles suggested, kissing the top of your head and tickling the little girl's tummy before heading to the shop.
"That was a big one, baby girl!", you cooed as Céline ate all of the yogurt on the spoon, cleaning the remnants on her lips with the spoon before going back in on the pot when you were interrupted, "I'm sorry, dear", a female voice called.
Turning around, you saw a beautiful older woman, you guessed around her seventies, "this fell from your husband's pocket, and I bet your daughter would miss it soon", she said as she handed you the small stuffed toy Céline loved so much.
"Thank you so much, neither of us noticed and she would have made a fuss if we didn't have it back home", you smiled, "but we're not-", you were interrupted again by Céline's squeal when she saw Charles come back.
"Here's your ice cream, amour", Charles said as the lady smiled, "I was just bringing your daughter's toy back - it slipped from your pocket", she explained, sensing Charles' curiosity about her presence.
"Merci - can you say Merci, Céline?", he tried as the little girl babbled something that resembled the word.
"Enjoy them when they're this young, times truly flies by! You have such a beautiful family", she complimented before waving the three of you goodbye, joining who you presumed was her husband as they walked out of the park hand in hand.
"I tried correcting her but then you showed up", you said, "we are family, though", Charles reasoned, taking a spoonful of your ice-cream, "but I know what you mean. She's not wrong though, we look like a cute little family", he smiled.
"One day", you smiled, "one day, amour, we're going to have a little one of our own to squish a fill with love, won't we Céline? Do you want little cousins to play with?", he said as he took her into his lap, boucing her on his knee as she giggled loudly.
(Thank you for submitting an ask ✨️)

"Where's papa Missa?" is the first thing that Chayanne asks in the morning.
"Oh, he's just helping your godfather with something - we'll go meet up with them after breakfast," Philza brushes aside in concern, already knowing exactly what is going on.
Chayanne and Tallulah both give him wary looks, but his kids are good kids; they eat their breakfast, and start getting dressed.
"Wear something you don't mind getting dirty," Philza tells them. Which is true of every day, and so the reminder really does set them both on edge.
"Is something happening?" Tallulah asks.
"Well, it is Easter," Philza answers her. "Some people go to Church and stuff, but otherwise we just use it as an excuse to eat lots of chocolate. Just like Santa brings presents at Christmas, the Easter Bunny brings good kids chocolate eggs. Or decorative ones. Missa mentioned something about confetti but I'll be honest, I was half asleep so none of it went in."
That has their attention; both kids start glancing over the house, looking for a stockpile of treats. Philza can only laugh, and promise they'll find the eggs later.
Find being an operative word.
He had been meaning to hide them about the house, it's true, but then Bad had suggested maybe something for all of the eggs, and Tubbo had taken it upon himself to offer to host. Philza was a little worried about letting all of the kids run around the factories, but Tubbo had promised back and forth everything would be turned off - and he knows his friend would never do anything which could harm the kids.
Tallulah, having learnt there is a special event going on, insists on a different hat, and Philza helps her tuck flowers into her curls. Chayanne wants to immediately run off, hovering next to the door as he waits for his sister, and only begrudgingly accepting a tiny flower crown for his ducky.
Philza snaps a photo of Tallulah placing it there, and double checks he has a couple of fresh albums.
The teleport over to Fobo is fast, and involves being hit with a wall of sound. Before the purple has even faded Philza can hear Pac yelling for Richarlyson to get down from... somewhere? while Mike dies laughing on the floor. Not all of the eggs and parents are here, yet, but the earlier types are - Fit and Ramón, Pac and Mike with Richas, Bagi with Empanada... And, of course, Tubbo with Sunny. Leo also seems up already, probably under Tubbo's supervision, while Roier is sat on a picnic rug with Missa, the pair of them both half asleep while Pepito crawls through a nearby bush. Aypierre is examining one of the machines, so surely Pomme is about.
Now that he thinks about it, while a fair few parents aren't up so early, the only kid who seems to still be missing are Dapper and Chunsik. A quick glance at his comms shows that Bad, Acau, and YD are all awake, so it's not likely long.
"Hey guys!" Philza calls, drawing attention to their group. "We made it!"
"Great!" Tubbo grabs a pair of baskets - one wrapped with purple ribbon, one orange - and brings them over. "Here are your baskets! There's ten gifts specifically for each of you - they'll have a ribbon that matches your basket on them - hidden around the courtyard. Once everyone's here, we're gonna let you guys into town, where there's a whole bunch of eggs that don't belong to anyone, just waiting to be picked up. For now you can look for your own, just stay nearby, ok?"
And they /are/ good kids, but they are also excitable, and so the pair of them are three eggs apiece before remembering to come and hug Missa good morning.
Philza, having by then greeted everyone already there and found a bit of roof to perch on, captures the laughing and the smiling in his camera.
Once the kids have returned to their hunt, he drops a copy of the best down on Missa. It earns him his husband looking up, with a grin and a wave. Philza grins and waves back, snapping a quick photograph of Sunny directing Pepito towards one of Pepito's eggs as he swings down to the rug.
He is immediately met with a plate of gorditas. Phil takes one, squeezes Missa's hand in greeting, and joins the slowly growing collection of parents on the rug; Bagi and Mike have also joined, leaving Pac to wrangle children with Tubbo.
"Early morning?" Philza knows Missa was up at the crack of dawn, unusual for him, but it's still a nice thing to ask.
"Sí," Missa only nearly drops his plate as he yawns. "Eggs needed painting."
"I really thought you'd come home after delivering the eggs."
Missa waves his hand, "Tubbo had too many to hide. We stayed to help."
Between the chocolate eggs, the painted eggs, the little plastic eggs of jellybeans, and the cascarones, Philza just knew there were going to be more than the hundred and ten eggs they'd agreed upon. Ten for each kid had been plenty, but with a general hunt as well...
Philza watches the kids scrabble around, looking for everything.
"Did he work out how to balance it so none of the eggs get left out, or is that why some eggs are marked as for them?"
"No more than ten extra eggs, and there are some extra special prize eggs hidden about. The older kids can hunt the prize eggs, and the younger ones just want the shiny ones."
There's a bit of doubt as to if if that will actually hold, but it's as good a plan as any. Kids thrive on a bit of contest, right? It'll be fine. If nothing else Chayanne will wrangle the older kids into sharing stuff out a bit more evenly, if only for Chunsik and Pepito's sakes.
Just as he's thinking that, he spots Sunny and Ramón sneaking up on Fit. He gets his camera just in time to catch the moment they break a cascarón over his bald head, showering him in confetti, a matter which only ends with them being chased across the courtyard, shrieking in delight as Fit leaves a trail of glittery confetti behind him.
It is about then that the rest of the kids arrive, their parents trailing behind. Bad is immediately met by attacks by Pomme and Richas - Philza has no fucking clue where the water balloons full of glitter came from - while Tubbo tries to round everyone up.
Philza takes more photos, but otherwise leaves them to it; conversation is largely about the amazing picnic spread, one he can keep up to in his sleep.
Even if the occasional joke does draw his attention for confused laughter and a double take.
Tubbo gesticulates dramatically as he speaks, excitement already high for the present children, but being driven further as they are congratulated on progress so far, and hyped up for the hunt to come.
It's nice, seeing everyone and the island at a bit of peace for once. The town is safe enough - as soon as it was announced as hosting the event, Philza and Bad both spent hours checking all of the lighting, and adding clear fences. It's a daytime event, but you can never be too careful with these things. Tubbo can be trusted with the kids and machines, but just to make sure Mike and Aypierre have both looked over it, while Pac and Fit helped Foolish make sure any roofs that could be accessed were not ones you could fall off without putting effort in to doing so.
Philza's pretty sure someone - probably Richarlyson - will still find a way, but it's not like there's a big area to cover, and there are plenty of both adults and other eggs about if anything does happen.
He might go perch and take some more photos.
In a little while, though; Missa hands Philza a cup of something, with a whispered 'they'll be fine'.
Philza accepts the cup, pours one for his husband, and gets out his album to show him the ones already taken.

Arlie was hard at work setting up her special tea table, laying out plates, cutlery mugs, she was pulling out the whole nine yards because today, her daddy would be the special guest at Arlie’s Tea House. To be completely honest neither you nor Chris could figure out where she thought of the name, but it was the cutest little concept she’d come up with recently. Her playroom was now set up, the table looking very beautiful with little flowers and sparkles intertwined between the utensils and plates. Arlie made sure to add Duckie to a seat as well as her stuffed brown bear named boobear, yes, she named him boobear, when she deemed the space perfect enough, she yelled down to Chris
“Daddy!!!! Come to tea party!!!”
Chris chuckled at the urgency in Arlie’s tone, kissing your forehead and making his way up the stairs to her party
“I’m coming up little duck!”
Arlie giggled and as he reached the top of the stairs her head poked out behind the door
“Hi daddy!”
“Hi baby, you all ready for our party?”
She nodded, smiling her famous megawatt smile
“I am, but you not ‘weady yet!”
He crouched down to her level and swiped a piece of hair out of her eyes
“Oh, I’m not?”
Chris could notice she was holding something behind her back, and he had an inkling of what it could be
“No daddy, you need to put on special hat and makeup silly!”
Never in his years of living did he ever think he would find himself staring at what everyone, his wife included says is a carbon copy of him, his baby girl, in all her excitement as she waited for her favourite man in the world to let her dress him up. He would move mountains for Arlie, and if that included a makeover from the toddler, then he’d be dammed if he ever said no
“Alright then duck, help me get all ready for tea!”
Arlie pulled him further into the room, making him sit in a chair far too small for him, but he wouldn’t complain, especially if it was Arlie putting him in it. They spent some time laughing together as she mixed blues, purples, and pinks from her kiddie eyeshadow palette, using a small brush to put it on his eyes. Chris made sure to stay extra still so she wouldn’t mess up, a smile creeping up when he noticed her tongue poking out of her mouth as she concentrated on the colour of blush she was going to use. Her little eyebrows furrowing together in thought as every step and product of makeup was applied to Chris’s face
“Okay daddy, just lips then done!”
Chris chuckled before pouting gently so she could apply what he saw was a cherry red lipstick, yeah…cherry red
“Wow Daddy!! You so pwetty now!!”
“Was I not pretty before duck?”
Arlie shook her head no and he laughed, watching as she put the makeup away neatly, turning and clasping her hands together
“Sit down fo’ tea now pwease daddy!”
Chris found his spot and Arlie got to work, setting out snacks, plastic of course, and filling their cups with water, there was absolutely nothing but joy radiating from his baby girl, and it was one of Chris’s favourite sights. They two of them were partners and crime, and when you snuck upstairs to check on them your heart warmed watching the two playing with Duck and Boobear, a slight chuckle slipping out noticing Chris’s amazing makeup job. When you snapped a quick photo both of their faces turned to you and Arlie waved
“Hi momma!!”
“Hi my love, look at how beautiful you made daddy!”
Chris narrowed his eyes playfully at you, a wink being sent back in his direction
“Daddy so pwetty now, you want some tea momma?”
After pretending to think about you agreed, taking your spot next to Chris, Arlie pouring some water in your mug
“Arlie does momma get her makeup done too?”
You smiled getting yourself ready for all her makeup and artistic talent when she laughed
“Daddy you so silly! Momma alweady’ pwetty without it!”
You couldn’t hold in the laugh that escaped as you leaned over to kiss Chris on the cheek, his eyes rolling slightly before he joined you in laughing. If there was anything about your little duck, is that she was not afraid of honesty, she’d tell you the truth no matter what, and clearly, she wasn’t shy about it.

Hi CJ! I hope you’re well!
I just wanted to stop in and say hi — I’m adding this duck in hopes that it’ll brighten your day! I hope you’ll find something that makes you smile this week! ☺️💕
Tumblr media
ps…thanks so much for your message earlier - I’m still smiling from it!! 😊
DUCK!!!
I so want a tub duck!! I work a block from a Tractor Supply and every year they have baby ducks and chicks in these huge feed troughs. OMG, I want a baby duck SOOOOOOO bad. And there's a pond near my parents I could release it as when it was an adult. But my parents say that 1. My cats would have aneurysms. 2. They live too close to said pond and it would visit and their dogs would have aneurysms. 3. I am too old for a tub duck. (HA!) 4. I would not end up with *A* tub duck...the below would happen...
Tumblr media
Okay, maybe they're valid on 4. But thank you for the duck with the flower hat. She absolutely made me smile this morning when I so desperately needed it. And now ducky with flower hat, and kitten against baby duckies are going to be my go to for tackling the email!!
XOXO
CJ

KnitOvation Stitch Dictionary, by Andrea Rangel
Andrea Rangel's KnitOvation Stitch Dictionary is exactly what the subtitle claims: 150+ modern colorwork knitting motifs. In other words, it offers stitch patterns for repeating motifs worked in two colors. Featuring visually interesting designs and clear, easy-to-follow charts, this book is a welcome addition to any collection of stitch pattern books.
The KnitOvation Stitch Dictionary begins with a short section discussing the impact of yarn choice on the finished piece. Photographs of swatches worked in the same pattern but in different types of yarn demonstrate how fiber type, yarn weight, halo, elasticity, and other factors influence the look of the final product.
The stitch patterns themselves make up most of the book. The motifs include botanicals (flowers and leaves), animals both real and imaginary, a variety of objects from donuts to rubber duckies, and more abstract designs, both curvilinear and geometric. Every motif is shown with a knitted swatch and its accompanying chart, including stitch and row counts.
The book's only real weakness is that the motifs are not organized into any logical groupings, so you have to either browse the entire selection, or look up the motif by name in the index. Not all the names are descriptive, which limits the utility of the motif (pattern-name) index.
Rangel also offers three patterns that demonstrate how one can apply the motifs to three-dimensional, curved clothing items: a hat, a sweater, and a pair of mitts. The pullover sweater pattern is graded for 13 sizes, ranging from a chest circumference of 33" all the way up to 69", so it's quite size-inclusive.
Finally, there is a list of abbreviations used in the patterns, and a glossary of techniques accompanied by illustrations.
And there are four separate indexes! The stitch count and row count indexes allow you to search for a motif that fits the number of stitches or rows you have available. The motif A-Z index lists the motifs by name, which is great for locating some motifs (Hummingbird; Candy Cane) but less so for others (Crimp; Rift.) The subject index covers topics found in the introductory section, the garment pattern section, and the glossary of techniques.
This is a terrific collection of repeatable motifs for knitting and designing knitwear, and I can't wait to use some of these motifs in my own knitting!
(a longer version of this review appears on my blog.)
