Sally and johns dynamic is so well written and interesting to me. The dinner scene is most striking, where she's talking to him like he's a stranger about nothing of substance, "you wear sneakers right?"she really is just a stranger to him. she wear a wig in front of her SON. they're so fundamentally disconnected. even when she has to comfort him she doesn't know how to hold him. she's small, crowded in on herself like she's a child, trying SO hard not to touch him, eventually flipping so that he's the one holding her. she's so unsure of him, she doesn't know how to hold or comfort him, probably because she never really was held or comforted herself. john observing his mothers sadness "she cries a lot" and not being able to truly understand her "does your mom wear hair on top of her hair?" she's hardly a real person to him, she's like an actress who says vague things in relation to what his dad says and dresses up and disappears. she should have had dogs.
