Synopsis:

It's springtime in suburban Rosewood, which means iced soy lattes, fresh manicures in shimmering pastels - and prom. But while everyone else is flipping through the racks at Saks in search of the perfect prom dress, Hanna, Spencer, Emily, and Aria are on a different kind of hunt: They're looking for A. . . .

Hanna puts her campaign for prom queen on the back burner to volunteer at a burn clinic, where one of A's victims is recovering. Emily digs into Ali's past at the mental hospital with some very crazy consequences. Spencer contacts a private eye to help her stalk her stalker. But when their sessions get a little too private, they may forget to keep their eyes on A. . . . And Aria's worried that A is even closer than she thought. When her dark secret from Iceland finally comes to light, she discovers that maybe, just maybe, the one person she's been trying to hide the truth from has known all along.

The liars are finally taking the fight to A. But no matter what they do, A's always one step ahead, ready to crush the girls completely.

Plot:

After the disaster on the Eco Cruise, the Liars are done with getting tormented by A. Hiding in Spencer's soon-to-be step-father bunker, they create a list of all the potential accomplices to A, whom they are nailed down to be Real Ali, who somehow survived the fire and are being taken care of by a private nurse. With all the names written down, Spencer gives each of the liars a task: Hanna is to go back to the burn clinic that Graham was placed him to see if he recognized A, Emily is to be friends with Iris as she was roommates with the Real Ali at The Preserve, Spencer is to track down Real Ali, and Aria is to investigate the one who has always been there when things went wrong, her amazing boyfriend Noel. As the girls dodge Special Agent Jasmine Fuji, an FBI agent tasked with interviewing everyone staying at the Jamaican resort the same time Tabitha was, she has additional questions for the liars. With prom approaching fast, the liars' love lives are also failing. Hanna has to lie to Mike. Reefer immediately bails on Spencer. Emily's love is also running from the FBI, and Aria is under increasing pressure, suspecting Noel is A. With A always being one step ahead of the liars, it is time for them to fight back and solve the mystery of their tournament before they are sent to jail for a murder they did not commit.

Thoughts:

Sara Shepard is out of their writing slump, as this thirteenth installment is as good as the start of the series. Shepard has the liars actively hunting A down for the first time, trying to figure out who they are and stop the tournament they have been put through. Shepard also ends their "what happens during the summer" segment, finishing off with Aria's Iceland summer adventure, which seemed to come out of nowhere, and similar to the other liars, it did provide plot points throughout this novel, but overall it was not really needed besides providing another character for the liars to interact with in the future. As the series is coming near the end, it is interesting to look at the romance element of the story, as Shepard divides the girls with solid love lives with Aria and Hanna to the one-offers with Spencer and Emily. Shepard spent the entire book twelve trying to get Spencer with Reefer, who bails by page twenty and is set up to never appear again. Meanwhile, Emily lusts after the FBI's most wanted, who also seems like they are never coming back. Yet this is one of several books where we see Mike and Hanna, and Aria and Noel, fighting, getting back together, fighting some more as the liars keep lying to their boyfriends. I understand the concept of maintaining the A secret, and not putting a target on their boyfriend’s back. Still, the liars should realize that by this point, the boys are involved, so lying to them about mundane things, like working at the burn clinic, creates unnecessary problems. This is also the first time Shepard has the girls look inward on who A could be. Throughout the story, Noel is the prime suspect despite being Aria's boyfriend for more than a year. With this focus on Noel and finding A in general, Shepard takes a backseat on previous villains of Kate, Klaudia, and Naomi, who barely get any page time within this novel as the liars are focused on finding A. For this, there is no worse character or best character, as each of the liars is focused on finding A, giving them each of tasks that they do not really mess up, as their hearts are all in it, trying to end the tournament. With this novel having similar cliff-hanger vibes as the first part of the series, this book definitely revamps the series with its fast-moving plot that relates to the series as a whole and character motivations that focus more on A rather than their mundane lives.

The concept of the novel is our four girls trying to find out who A is, thus I thought it would be fun to keep a suspect list to see how many people Shepard writes for the girls to at one point suspect and by whom. So here is the list for book #13:

EL PRÓXIMO INTERROGADO EN LA INVESTIGACIÓN QUE SE LE SIGUE A JOAQUÍN RAMÍREZ Y KEIKO PROVOCARÁ QUE LOS FUJIS DEJEN DE CELEBRAR LO DE VILLARÁN

Los fujimoristas acaban de descubrir que la corrupción de Odebrecht extendió sus tentáculos en la política peruana. Gracias a la tirada de dedo de Jorge Barata a Susana Villarán (afirmó que Odebrecht financió la campaña contra la revocatoria de la exalcaldesa de Lima), los naranjas (y algunos apristas) aparecen públicamente para condenar la corrupción.

Sin embargo, tenemos una noticia que le arruinará la celebración a los fujimoristas que súbitamente empezaron a creer en las investigaciones de El Comercio (al que van a denunciar penalmente) y de IDL-Reporteros (al que le crean hashtags injuriosos). La Fiscalía está a punto de interrogar al mismo personaje que se bajó la campaña de Keiko Fujimori:

Jesús Vasquez es el piloto peruano que aseguró que el principal financista de Fuerza Popular, Joaquín Ramírez, le confesó que «Keiko Fujimori le había dado 15 millones de dólares, de las elecciones del 2011, para lavarlos en sus grifos». Justo por esa fecha, como informa La República, «Osías Ramírez, hermano de Joaquín, habría constituido tres grifos en el norte del país entre los años 2009, 2010 y 2011″.

La información que dio Vásquez no fue un simple chisme sino una declaración que dio a la propia DEA (Administración del Control de Drogas). La entidad estadounidense tiene al piloto como testigo clave en una investigación que se desarrolla contra Ramírez. Por eso la Fiscalía peruana lo interrogará en el proceso por lavado de activos que ha reabierto en nuestro país contra Joaquín y Keiko Fujimori.

Gracias a La República tenemos esta cronología del proceso contra el equipo Rocket naranja que había sido cerrado:

El 28 de setiembre de este año, la fiscal Sara Vidal Vargas archivó el caso por presunto lavado de activos.

La Procuraduría de Lavado de Activos apeló contra el archivamiento.

La fiscal superior Luz Peralta Santur vio que el interrogatorio que Sara Vidal le hizo al  testigo Jesús Vásquez fue «insuficiente, superficial y sin motivación».

El 7 de noviembre, la Fiscalía reabrió el caso. Días después, el fujimorismo pidió la cabeza del Fiscal de la Nación por motivos tan reales como el «no eres tú, soy yo» que te dijo tu ex cuando te terminó.

La fiscal Luz Peralta a dispuesto dos acciones:

Que se interrogue exhaustivamente a Jesús Vásquez.

Que se solicite una copia de la grabación que hizo Jesús Vásquez de su conversación con Joaquín Ramírez y que luego entregó a la DEA.

Y que se valore los peritajes contables de la Policía a los investigados Ramírez y Fujimori.

La magistrada está convencida de que la investigación que se cerró fue mal llevada y que favoreció a Joaquín y a Keiko. Esta vez, han sido incluidos en el proceso el congresista Osías Ramírez Gamarra; su tío Fidel Ramírez Prado, la hija de este, Maribel Ramírez Gallegos; y la esposa de Joaquín Ramírez, Rosa Castañeda Cubas.

The World Where Everyone Can Be Happy

Blazar: It's the heat of summer and the others see Gento reading a book by his former teacher, and one time GGF Kaijuoligist, Yokomine Kazunori. When persistent inverted rainbows appear, he goes to fish with him again, and Yokomine tells a story of his youth, of his village praying to Nijikagachi for rainz but if evil he will bring a storm. Nijikagachi appears near Mt. Fuji, and unaware of its nature, Earth Garon goes to fight, but Teruaki and Gento realise what it is. Nijikagachi goes from place to place bringing rain, Emi researching it's history. Gento goes to Kazunori to tell him more, who confirms he summoned it, and has come to believe humanity needs to be reset, having become arrogant and destroyed the Kaiju and nature, and blasts Gento. With seven typhoons formed, Gento and Anri take Earth Garon to fight Nijikagachi, but Kazunori opens its armour and it disables Earth Garon. Blazar fights, but is overwhelmed, defeated by Nijikagachi, Teruaki, Yasunobu and Emi planning to rescue Anri and Gento, unaware the captain is lying on the ground in the forest.

Geats: Keiwa and Sara eat at Tanuki Soba, while Sara is watching a Neon Channel video dancing video. Ziin visits a temple, plays with a coin, then addresses Ace, looking to a shrine where the petrified Geats-IX Buckle rests, greeting Tsumuri, who maintains the shrine, as Michinaga works with his colleagues. Immediately after Tsumuri fired, Black Tsumuri left her body, having used her to achieve their goal, Suel expunges the rebelling audience portion, declaring that he can't stop Ace being reborn, but he can reshape the world before it happens, they leave her in regret. Black Tsumuri announces Ace's death and that the remaining interference will be dealt with, as Regard Omega attacks Keiwa and Neon. Tsumuri cries over Ace, who suddenly speaks to her ethereally, telling her he had prepared for this, and goodbye. Buffa joins the fight as Regard Omega first accelerates himself and then rewinds all of their time, however the three all refuse to give up, and are rewarded by the arrival of Geats Magnum Boost on the Boostriker. After Mitsume's death he'd understood he needed to become a god to stop management, his body may be gone, but he's still here. He grants the other's desire to fight with him, and the three overpower Regard Omega, who tries to rewind their time again only to be confronted by Geats-IX,who ultimately overpowers him. Suel seems to have survived, only for Ace to burst out from within him, and recreate the world, telling his friends that this will be the world where everyone can be happy, though they point out that should include him, he tells them to forget him. Samas freaks out to Black Tsumuri about the 4D gate closing, Girori meanwhile accepts their fate, recognising the world should be shaped by those living in it, not their future manipulation. Ziin informs Tsumuri that there are plans to make a DGP built on granting wishes not sacrifice, and she agrees to an offer to become navigator again. Tsumuri looks at wishes left at the shrine. Win aims to pursue his rock dreams again, Daichi is raising his Jamato hoping for a world where they live alongside humanity, Michinaga enjoys eating with his colleagues, Sara enjoys her daily life, among other things, Neon, who is now assisted by Kyuun as producer, wishes for her prince charming, and Sakurai Keiwa wishes for world peace. Ace examines these and other wishes, and promises they will come true as long as they continue to wish for them. A young man chases after a card he calls Hopper-1, and Ace wishes him happiness too.

Kingohger: The Ohsama Sentai engage Deathnarok, Gira requests he give up, but Deathnarok argues humanity defeated them and declared Bugnarok the villains, the only way he can change that is eliminating them. When he won't consider the future of the Bugnarok, Jeramie challenges him to single combat for the Bugnarok throne, giving him the Kumonos Slayer until the appointed time as proof of his word. He then requests to the others that when he becomes King, they recognise Bugnarok as Tikyu's 6th kingdom, and asks they allow him to show something. Yanma and Kaguragi wait on standby, as Jeramie leads Gira and Rita into Bugnarok territory, and Himeno discovers from studying Gerojim that Bugnarok are genetically almost the same as humans. Jerami reveals a mass grave of Guardian Cicadas, presumably those from the Fury of the Gods, gathered by Bugnarok and their Shugod Souls consumed across 2000 years by Bugnarok, gradually taking on their abilities and mutating them into their current forms, this is probably why the Shugods allied with humanity. Punctuated by Deathnarok consuming soldiers challenging him for the throne, Jeramie explains that since losing the war the Bugnarok have fought amongst and consumed eachother, with the strongest reigning as king. Gerojim reveals that the cost of Bugnarok eating a Shugod Soul to grow is that it will eventually kill them, while remaining evasive about his own continued life. Jeramie reveals a small Tarantula Shugod that refuses to leave despite his attempts to protect it, Gira learns from it that Deathnarok has protected it all this time. It goes to Deathnarok, trying to comfort him, and he sends it away, but with regret. Jeramie and Deathnarok fight, he drags Deathnarok to the surface and tries to make him turn from the hatred, believing he wants to make peace but can't. When Deathnarok refuses he prepares to take his life, and Gira intervenes, declaring that while the Bugnarok were the aggressors, the treatment they have received and has been visited on their descendents was also wrong. Deathnarok recognises the sincerity and puts down his sword. And then Kamejim impales him on his staff and calls down a fireball, announcing he will not allow an end to the war he has been engineering all this time. Jeramie tried to pull Deathnarok free, but the former king pulls him close, telling the new king to prove the Bugnarok are here, and push him away, and dies in the fireball. Kamejim eats a soul and grows, only to be defeated by God King-Ohger, declaring humans the victors of the war. The King's agree to recognise Bugnarok with Jeramie as it's king, and he makes an address to the people of Tikyu, acknowledging that they aren't going to forget the differences overnight, but telling them that the hostilities are over, and begging that they not pass the prejudices to future generations. It isn't that day yet, but he believes a day will come when humanity and Bugnarok can join hands. We now enter a new chapter, of 6 kings who united their world in peace, and of the threat that is coming.
