the qsmp is such an interesting project, like just listening to everyone in a call all theorizing about everything going on as well as we all are. you can see how invested everyone is in it and it's <3

#qsmp #i constantly think about some post i saw months and months back about how the server runs more like a dnd campaign #that we're just watching the members play through #they're playing their characters in this big expansive world against a game runner who's leading the main plot #but is still more than happy to let them branch out on their own with their characters and embrace any wild consequences they could cause #and also as a lil dnd nerd myself. i fuckin love it >:D

lily is a nerd in the sense she spends most of her time in the library, planning her career and studying for classes, obsessing over fictional books, playing chess, reading lord of the rings a million times, practices potion making for fun and likes to make the same potion over and over, gets excited over quidditch stats and making types of plays but finds watching the actual game boring

regulus is a nerd in the sense he obsesses over classical music and relentlessly learns compositions, secretly loves classic romance books and uses them to work out how to socialise, spends all his time studying or on independent projects usually related to something in one of his classes, was ojce given a cigarette and his first thought was to dissect it open

james is a nerd in the sense he obsessively watched star wars over and over and then brought every piece of merch he could find, always gets top marks in everything, willingly reads extremely high level transfiguration books for fun all the time, spends all day working out quidditch stats, and had a map making phase as a kid (which he still has)

Because I am infected with "loving my D&D characters too much" disease I have decided that my next really big video project is going to be a dramatic retelling of the events of our D&D game (the one Verity comes from).

I'm going to narrate it and I have the other players and DM on board to do voice lines for their characters. I want to storyboard the whole thing. The first video will be the entire first story arc that covers about 6-7 months of the campaign. I've spent most of the weekend turning my rambling campaign recaps into a script and I'm probably about halfway done? The whole thing may end up being close to an hour.

I am so excited.

not 2 be like the adventure zone has had a lasting and sometimes negative effect on ttrpg fandom, but,

(listen. it's not their fault. and in many ways they have revived ttrpg as a hobby, and the stories are great, and i think they're doing great with blades in the dark and also i loved how they did a quiet year, i think they r really getting a bigger view of their impact and making choices in light of that. but unforch ppl got ideas abt d&d from them that were Incorrect to how the game really plays, and then ppl got ideas abt motw that like...... honestly griffin actually did a p decent job at running motw as it was meant to be, but for some reason, people,)

#did that motw game run off into homebrew territory and into a bigger plotline than the game was maybe meant for MAYBE #so that may be part of it #but honestly probably just that it was their second big campaign and ppl who were disappointed with dnd latched onto it as a system #as a 'general do what you want system' instead of what it IS #u kno. stuff. anyway. #it's not all them there's a lot of actual plays out there who fudge rules etc but my god #the impact............ oof.

I need a good dnd group ‼️ but at the same time it needs to be in person, everyone has to be around my age, I need to feel extremely comfortable being myself around these people so they basically need to be really good friends already, I need to be a player, it needs to be a long campaign, and it has to have an intriguing and very specific vibe that I will like and the dm has to let me have decent creative liberty with my character.

God I don't know why that's too much to ask 🙄‼️

teary bc im so proud of the way the dnd campaign i run has developed. like aside from the (incredibly cool sexy enriching interesting invaluable) ways the pcs have created their story in the setting. i feel like the way i think about the world and the overarching themes i want to bring out has grown richer and more complex over time. i am so lucky to have gotten to play this silly game with such amazing players who have pushed it to become something so beautiful. heart emoji

I'm realizing why it might have been a bad idea to write my first long campaign using a game system I've never written a oneshot for.

#spider chatter #the first system I learned how to play was DnD 5e #but last year on my b-day my partner at the time got me the starter set for Call of Cthulhu 7e #at that point I had played a couple oneshots with DnD and had some minor experience writing them #at this point I had never run any kind of longer campaign only having been a player in a couple ones that never finished #so i ran one of the single player + keeper oneshots with my then partner #life gets busy and I take a break from running and playing games for a while #then I start running curse of strahd #get some friends #and decide that after finishing up CoS i'm going to run a CoC campaign #I have never homebrewed a CoC oneshot #much less a full campaign #in either system #only just last month was I finally able to get my hands on physical copies of the books #rather than just pdfs on anyflip #the only upside to this is that I am the only one who will be at the table who has played this system #one of the players got the core rulebook for Delta Green #but it will be nice to be a bit more confident in the rules for once #at my CoS table I have the second least amount of experience #halfway through the campaign we got a new player- someone who had never played any ttrpg before #anyway normal tags now #Call of Cthulhu rpg #call of cthulhu
