mattel: hey we need to drop our next goty as fast as possible
american girl creative team: why? kavi's selling pretty well
mattel: racism. what do you got for us
ag creative team: hmm. well it's been about ten years since we had mckenna and saige
mattel: who the fuck are those
ag creative team: ...some very popular girls of the year?
mattel: next you'll tell me we already used the name isabel
ag creative team: ok look, mckenna was a gymnast and that sold pretty well, especially in an olympic year. saige was mainly an artist but she also had horses.
mattel: great. do that
ag creative team: ...which one
mattel: fuse them together. rip one of their designs as well
ag creative team: what about the horse?
mattel: idk go see what barbie's got next door and use that. we're gonna go make tiktoks now

More guilty pleasure American Girl art, this time the much requested Girl of the Year dolls from 2001, 2003, 2005, 2006, and 2007 respectfully. I’m not a fan of these dolls and I refer to them as “upper-middle-class-nightmare-children” and eventually I think some of the later dolls look really cheap but I had the first one, Lindsey. She was one of the last dolls I ever collected so I have a big soft spot for her. Other years to come later.

if the new girl of the year Lila Monetti is from Minnesota then how come 21-year-old Mckenna is living there. What college does she go to now? Please tell me they answered this and didn't just randomly say McKenna is in Minnesota now. Did she go to the Olympics like she dreamed about? Give me the McKenna lore. I don't care if it's unrealistic I want my girl to have achieved her dreams.

More Girl of the Year American Girl dolls, 2013-2017. Style-wise, a little boring to draw. This is the era Mattel threw them into a decal-ed t-shirt and called it a day but I like them marginally better than the last 5. There is at least a little more variation on things like shoe-type and the re-introduction of “girls actually wear pants sometimes wow who knew?” I will get in a fist fight with Mattel over the fact that it took them 16 years to introduce one singular black doll tho. Meet me behind the dumpster, Mr Mattel, I got a knuckle sandwich waiting for you.
