Summer Stories '23
Author's Note: A small gift for @mirkwood-hr-department, inspired by an idea @melkors-defense-attorney shared the other day. Hope you enjoy! If you like this ship, please have a look at "Nothing gold can stay" by @mirkwood-hr-department, I really loved their dynamic in this fic <3

Character(s): Glorfindel x Thranduil | Stargazing
Synopsis: Before the War of the Last Alliance, Glorfindel and Thranduil spend the night together.
Warnings: /
Tumblr media
They lay under the stars together, exhausted after a night of passion, listening to the gentle sound of wind, grass and each other's breath.
"Are you afraid?"
It was Thranduil who broke the silence, propping himself up on his elbow as he rolled over on his side. Glorfindel turned his head to look at him, mesmerised once more by the silver glow of his hair in the moonlight.
Beautiful.
"I suppose not," he answered after a moment of contemplation. "I have... been in quite a few battles."
Thranduil nodded slowly.
"I am not afraid either," he said before Glorfindel could ask him in return. "Though... I do wonder..."
"What?"
Their eyes met, and they stared at each other in silence for a few seconds.
"I wonder if I will see you again. After everything, I mean."
Glorfindel smiled softly. He knew, just as his companion did, what remained unspoken between them – that either or both of them could fall in battle against the forces of Mordor, no matter how strong they were. Yet in the past he had fought battles more hopeless than this one, and he had known defeat as well. His own death he didn't fear, but the worry for his comrades and brothers-in-arms was like an old wound that pained him every time.
He sat up and reached out to caress Thranduil's cheek, tucking a stray strand of hair behind his ear.
"See the sky above?" Glorfindel whispered. "No matter what happens, one day we will meet again under the same stars."

Since we're doing ships we don't know the other's opinion on:
Mairon/Arien and Glorfinduil
Mairon/Arien:
Tumblr media
I've never really thought about them as a ship, but do I love the parallels -- fire element, freedom/existing outside of Aman, history with Melkor -- so I'd be receptive to the idea, potentially, depending on how it was developed and handled I'm so fucking picky. As far as my own interpretation/headcanoning goes, I've always just seen them as kindred spirits sort of peripherally aware of each other and never having had much to do with each other, BUT I do think a lot of that has to do with my hyperfixating on the Beleriand years and hardly ever spending any time thinking about anyone and anything outside of that particular continent and time-frame ^^;
Glorfindel/Thranduil:
Tumblr media
Again, I've never given this one any thought, so don't have much to say about it either way! Usually when I think of Glorfindel, it's very localized to Gondolin and/or Rivendell, and Thranduil to Mirkwood, with hardly any overlap between the two. And now that I am thinking about it, I'm realizing that I tend to view the Misty Mountains as some kind of... impassable mental division lmao. Third Age Middle Earth is very divided into East-West of the mountains for me, and First Age Gondolin is, well. Gondolin XD, i.e. isolated. I've honestly never actually considered any interactions between these two!

Flowers of Gold and Music of Old
Tumblr media
↳ Flowers of Gold and Music of Old, Thranduil x Glorfindel Requested by @the-ring-wasnt-even-pretty Song: Like Real People Do by Hozier Word Count: 900+ → REQUESTS, → Gif Source
Tumblr media
Thranduil had felt it, he knew in his heart of hearts what had happened, yet how could this miracle be even possible? It couldn’t be so, yet every fiber in his being told him it was true. His soul had suddenly become lighter, the constant cloud of darkness that had loomed over his days, had all of a sudden lifted and he felt light and warmth starting to seep through, touching his painfully frozen heart and melting the ice that had covered it for a thousand years.
Glorfindel.
Although Thranduil had always prised his more logical and collected side, the part of him that rarely leapt to conclusions and acted on emotion; he wasted no time pondering the sensation that had washed over him and left him overwhelmed with utter joy and happiness. The kind of relief that weakens one’s knees and makes one dizzy, so powerful and strong that it takes one’s breath away and demands one’s heart to skip a beat. Thranduil closed his eyes and allowed the sensation to drown him in its bliss and promise. The promise of the one he loved more than anything, more than life, more than himself, more than the world combined.
Glorfindel.
The gardens had always been their reprieve, their escape from the harsh and cruel life they had been forced to endure; which is where Thranduil had found himself not long after the sensation had visited him in the early morning hours when half of his kingdom was still fast asleep in their beds. The king of Mirkwood waited patiently in the small clearing of the lush gardens that had been home to countless golden flowers. Beautiful blooms that had withered on that faithful day centuries ago and hadn’t grown ever since, leaving that patch in the gardens bare for the years to come. Much like Thranduil’s own heart, the clearing had remained empty and cold, yet another memory of the life that had been. Until now.
Glorfindel.
Thranduil closed his eyes as his lips curled into a lopsided smile at the feeling of life returning to the empty field. It was surging through the ground like a river that would twist and turn around the forest pathways, invigorating everything in its path as it moved forward. The king could feel the presence of his beloved, in the air around him and in the ground that rested beneath his bare feet. The soles of his feet could feel it pulsate with life he hadn’t thought of experiencing again, not in this realm at least. The ground appeared to have its own heartbeat, pumping and throbbing as it was slowly waking from the deadly slumber in which it had dwelled for centuries.
Glorfindel.
The Elvenking opened his eyes slowly as he sensed a presence behind him. Thanduil’s heart skipped a beat before it began to hammer inside his chest, sending rushing blood throughout his entire body. He could feel his breath grow shallow and irregular as he braced himself for the moment which was to come. When his pale eyes would once more gaze upon the ethereal beauty of his beloved.
“I will not ask you where you came from,” Thranduil murmured quietly before taking a deep and steadying breath that came rushing out in a gasp as he felt Glorfindel’s arms embrace him from behind. He leaned back against his lover’s chest as his hands found Glorfindel’s and their fingers intertwined. Relief washed over Thranduil once again, more powerful and more profound this time, causing a long and soft sigh to emit from his slightly parted lips.
“Nor should you for you already know,” Glorfindel hummed quietly into Thranduil’s ear, his melodic voice reminding the Elvenking of how much he had missed the music that was his lover’s uttered words.
As the first rays of the morning’s sun embraced the reunited lovers, Thranduil moved to turn around to take in the sight of his returned beloved, his eyes drinking in as much of Glorfindel as they possibly could. Thranduil’s features took on a loving lopsided smile as he continued to admire the fairest face in all of Middle Earth and beyond and the light golden waterfall of long, silken hair that encompassed it. A true and magnificent beauty if there ever was one.
“Like the promise of dawn after a night of raging storms of darkness, so has your return gifted me with hope,” Thranduil mused quietly as his fingers went to gently caress the flawless features of his lover. Glorfindel offered him a knowing smile as he leaned more into Thranduil’s touch, turning his head slightly, the fair elf planted a soft kiss on Thranduil’s open palm.
“There cannot be light without darkness, my love, nor can there be hope without a touch of despair,” Glorfindel reminded him as his hands went to cup Thranduil’s face, cradling it in his palms with such gentle care as if he was handling the most precious and invaluable of gems.
“I’ve never had reason to fear the darkness, however all-consuming it may threaten to be, for I will always have light in my life, heart and soul,” Glorfindel whispered as he leaned in and brushed his lips over Thranduil’s.
“For you are the immortal light that will forever guide me,” he breathed out against the Elvenking’s lips before he took them in a deep and loving kiss that filled Thranduil with a promise of eternal hope filled with golden light, blooming gardens and music for his heart and soul.
Glorfindel.

Eryn Galen Family Tree
Some headcanons on which I based this.
Before leaving Nelyafinwë and Findekano get married secretly due to the death of his grandfather.
Unfortunately, they are forced to separate for a long time before Fingon goes to look for his husband, rescuing him from the clutches of Morgoth and his servant. After a long healing process, the two finally unite their faiths and conceive a son. Ereinion Gil-Galad, whom they must let go to Círdan for his proper protection.
•••
Gil-Galad grows up without knowing much of his origin, however he manages to consolidate as a friend of the Sindar, under the tutelage of Círdan.
Thus, during a visit to Doriarth, Eldarion meets Prince Oropher, the young son of Elmo, and nephew of King Thingol. Who also turns out to be a candidate to be his spouse; to the displeasure of both, since at the beginning they do not tolerate each other at all. However, and after a time in which they put their laziness behind them after their lives were put in danger due to an incident outside Melian's belt, they decide to continue with the courtship between them, concluding that they will go at their own pace with it.
As it turns out, they get married.
Living in a fairly stable and happy marriage, they decide to wait a while before even considering having children. Although they enjoy taking care of their nephew, Celeborn, son of Oropher's brother, Galadhon.
The two enjoy their time together very much, Oropher still works in his uncle's court and Ereinion continues to apprentice with Círdan.
During the eighth year of their marriage, they finally have an only son, Thranduil.
Gondolin falls, and with it Ereinion is summoned to the island of Balar where he is told of his origin, who his parents are and the death of his uncle Turgon, for which he was now to be named High King.
Shortly after the third murder of relatives. Gil-Galad founds the city of Lindon which he rules with the help of Oropher. At the same time they see Thranduil grow up more. Being that when the latter reaches adolescence, his ada founds Eryn Galen, Oropher is appointed king by the wood elves and much to his regret he must leave to lead what remains of his family's village, Thranduil stays with Ereinion for seasons, especially because he wishes to continue seeing his cousin, Celeborn, although he also visits his ada.
The last alliance arrives, Gil-Galad has decided to create an army to attack Sauron in an attempt to quell the evil he spreads throughout Middle-earth.
Oropher is captured by the dark lord, his husband and son believe him dead, Thranduil is crowned king in the midst of battle and his Atar guides him as best he can given the current circumstances.
(I know Thingol banned Quenya, but Erenion, Oropher and Thranduil probably spoke it at home).
It is not until the climax of the war that Glorfindel gives his help to Oropher who manages to flee from Sauron because the latter finally came out to give battle to Gil-Galad.
(Fuck the canon, Oropher and Ereinion are alive when it ends.)
•••
Thranduil and Glorfindel met during the last alliance, because of young Elrond.
Thranduil felt a great admiration for the lord of the house of the golden flower, while Glorfindel decided to give himself a chance to fall in love again if he and the prince of Eryn Galen could get out of the war.
Being so, both spoke towards the fourth year of the conflict, confessing their desire towards the culmination of what they are living. Since by tradition the elves do not marry during the war and much less have children. During that time, only once in the fifth year of the last alliance, the two share a single kiss that turns out to be nothing more than a brush of lips. The war ends, thanks to the Valar they can now breathe without fear that this is their last day in the same land.
Glorfindel decides to court Thranduil this under the blessing of Gil-Galad and Oropher.
(Celeborn and Elrond organize the betrothal dinner)
They however, decide to marry with the trees as witnesses before having a larger celebration as expected by the elves. Ten years pass before Prince Legolas is born.

Version 0.2
Aragorn and Legolas already have a relationship when they join the Fellowship of the Ring. Gandalf knows it and Frodo is very suspicious since despite their many attempts, they do not disguise it as well as they think.
Frodo is aware of the looks they give each other when they think no one sees them.
Boromir has seen them flirting, they use the sindarin but it is clear what is flirting.
Gimli also found them sharing his watch. Aragorn had his head resting on Legolas' lap while Legolas hummed to him and stroked his dark locks, both looking up at the stars.
It is Pippin who in his boredom asks to please tell them how they met, how long they have been together and also asks if those rings they wear themselves mean they are married.
It is Legolas who just resigns himself and tells the story, Sam finds it quite romantic and Gimli just says that Legolas charmed him with his singing, which makes everyone laugh.

Extra headcanons :
- Fingon is trans.
- Sindar have both gender.
- Glorfindel was very afraid of falling in love after losing Ecthelion, however Thranduil came as a bucket of cold water. He makes amends with his relationship with Ecthelion and decides to follow his feelings.
- Glorfindel is sworn to Elrond being this descendant of Turgon to whom he was sworn before. For which he lives in Imladris, Thranduil understands it because his parents also lived separated in spite of being married because they had their own duties. However, Elrond sends Glorfindel away until Legolas is the equivalent of sixteen human years old. It is then that he is finally allowed to return.
- Legolas has honey-colored hair, a combination of his parents'. His eyes are also warm like Glorfindel's even if the color of them is similar to Thranduil's.
- If Aragorn and Legolas had a daughter she would be named Miriel.
