Pokémon Scarlet and Violet; A Brave New Frontier?

The latest generation of Pokémon games promised the world, quite literally. With Legends:Arceus being their halfway experiment, Scarlet and Violet were their toes in the water for full Skyrim. The Open-World Experience.

In some ways, it delivers. Power up your motorbike dragon, and you can go anywhere in Paldea. It comes at some fairly hefty costs, though;

The Bad

As many have mentioned, the graphics and the draw distance for this game… aren’t great. Things will disappear from sight if the camera gets too close, or even if random wild Pokémon run into you when you’re navigating the menu, simply because the game doesn’t know what to do with them.

There are also glitches, both visual and mechanical, as well as an iffy frame rate that dips between choppy and photo album during busier scenes. These things aren’t game breakers, but they sure could’ve been better, and show massive issues in the production side of things.

While we’re on the subject, there’s a lot of evidence for corner cutting. Of all the buildings in this sprawling metropolis, your protagonist can only physically enter a handful of them. The majority of them are either doorways that teleport the user inside of the building (evidenced by rotating the camera as they open the door), fancy shop menus in place of a building interior, or simply a closed door that the trainer can’t even enter.

Even the poke centres are just hollowed out pit stops now, tripling up as a shop and TM maker all at once, and depriving poor attendants of privacy and shelter from the elements. The only actual buildings you can explore is the protagonist’s house, and even then there’s locked rooms.

The protagonist’s school is little more than one big reception room glued to several others via teleports, and all of this kills the immersion, because exploring the buildings is as much a quintessential Pokémon experience as exploring the region itself.

Even mainstays of the Pokémon games have suffered, where the online play is passive and laggy, waiting an age to refresh for new Tera raid battles, and the stalwart of the Day-Care has been removed, replaced with a significantly less romantic picnic basket for Pokémon to do the deed in. And of course, this means more waiting around, because there’s only so much you can do while at the picnic with limited space to move.

In short, the nuts and bolts of Scarlet and Violet were lacking. Too much detail was focused in the wrong places - such as the fabric on various characters’ clothing - while shunned in others.

But enough about that.

The Good

Gen 9 brings with it a new gimmick, once again replacing the old ones. This one is Terastallization, a process where Pokémon can change their type during battle, and remain so until the battle’s over. This gives plenty of ammo for mind games and tactical trickery, as Pokémon can suddenly wall things they’d initially be weak to, or enhance an already strong point, or simply throw a strategic curveball.

Unlike Dynamax, it doesn’t feel like a clunky mishmash of the previous two gimmicks, Mega Evolution and Z Crystals, and it’s not too overpowered either, as it can only be used once between healings at a poke centre, which does a lot to keep it balanced. To make sure everything gets a strong attack even when Terastallized, there’s a move that goes with it in Tera Blast, allowing for a guaranteed STAB on almost every Pokémon.

With 18 new Tera-types available to every available Pokémon, the possibilities are nearly endless, and there’s plenty of fun to be had with it.

As Pokémon games go, we don’t expect much in terms of plot. Just cute creatures and fun, memorable characters. Thankfully, Scarlet and Violet delivered on both these fronts, producing the biggest selection of fully new Pokémon since Gen 5, and very few that are obviously dex fillers, such as the four different varieties of Squawkabilly.

Sure, there’s some regional variants and new evolutions of old Pokémon, and Gen 1 got plenty of attention as usual, but there’s a lot of new designs to enjoy, even if some of them are revisions of old ones.

The plot is where Scarlet and Violet shines. Not only is it the first generation to actually educate the protagonist, but it also ties the concept of education into the world travelling motif that gamers have come to know. Players are free to visit wherever they please - within physical limits - and take on challenges in whatever order they want. If they take on someone far too strong straight away though, it’s on them, because the trainers do not scale to the protagonist. A bit of an oversight on Game Freak’s behalf that would’ve really helped the immersion.

Juggling schoolwork with three different storyline ‘paths’ causes your protagonist to befriend three different sub-protagonists: the excitable, battle hungry Nemona; the shy and secretive Penny; and the angsty but well meaning Arven. Like with the plot itself, it doesn’t matter whose storyline you develop first, just as long as you do, and they’re likeable enough to incentivise your protagonist to do so. Complete with a few heartwarming moments apiece.

Pokémon has touched on the dark and the scary a few times, but Scarlet and Violet go a long way to make your character feel a bit out of their depth in a region under threat. With the region’s professor - Sada or Turo, depending on the version - deciding to push boundaries and experiment with time travel, things inevitably go awry as Pokémon from either the past or future - again, depending on version - escape from their confines and threaten Paldea’s fragile ecosystem.

This ultimately means the character has to battle the local professor - or their AI equivalent - in order to restore peace to the world, with Arven, the unfortunate son of said professors, having to watch their estranged parent disappear from his life for the greater good. Pokémon has done sacrifices before, but one this explicit, this… final, is quite a landmark move, so props for that.

Between feeding off rowdy teams of rebellious school kids, to collecting badges in classic pokemon fare, to saving the world from spiralling off into a Doctor Who-esque temporal collapse, Scarlet and Violet is making strides where its fans have been hoping for years now. They didn’t quite get it right this time, but with some polish and hopefully a few patches to iron out the performance issues, there could be something solid here.

Overall?

Not bad. Far from perfect, but an enjoyable experience nonetheless. Here’s hoping that whatever comes next for Pokémon though, those tasked with bringing it to life will have enough time to make it perfect rather than just rush it out the door.

Take a bit longer. We can wait.
