I’ve been told that I’m good at impersonating people.

"[Dom is] constantly surrounded by men who are telling her, ‘No,’ and she has to overcome all of these hurdles and break down walls just to get to answers that she instinctively believes are there,” said Gummer. “The fact that she’s the only one who feels that way is cool—especially since the part of a lone FBI agent on the run, claiming to know the truth, is usually reserved for a guy.”

To prep for the part, Gummer shadowed real FBI agents, and says the show’s plot has left her with a healthy dose of paranoia (Dom is out to stop a hacker hell-bent on bringing down corporate America). “I use encryption apps for texts and calls,” she says. As for the hair, “I like it red. People notice me more, and I don’t think that’s necessarily for my work.”

Sporting rusty red hair dyed for her “Mr. Robot” character Dominique, the naturally brunette Gummer says wryly that she was doubtful she would win the role on the Rami Malek-led series because she lacks “any sense of my own talent.” “I feel like I’m very much aware of myself and how I am perceived to the world; I’m very much in my own body and she is so not. She’s just very different from me. But I went in there and because it was a brand new character, I felt like I wasn’t sort of catering to what they wanted or giving them anything I thought they expected from me, in a way,”

My first role was in House of Spirits when I was seven years old. I went in thinking I totally knew what I was doing—I was very over-confident for a seven-year-old. It was so much fun. I remember Vanessa Redgrave smelling really nice, and a scene in which I had to scream out of nowhere. I told the director, “It’s fine, I know how to scream really loud because my brother makes me scream.” I was running on my instincts.

The weirdest part of getting into character for Gummer—who prefers vintage outfits she picks up at Assembly or Maryam Nassir Zadeh rather than showier designers—was plying on the makeup and business casual to play DiPierro. For her audition, she caked on eye makeup, blow-dried her hair and stacked it up high, like Melanie Griffith getting off the Staten Island Ferry in Working Girl.

Grace Gummer as Dom DiPierro
As “the Javert to fsociety and Elliot,” DiPierro has a complicated relationship with our hacking heroes, one that may be more complex than cat and mouse. “Elliot and I are sort of connected in a way,” Gummer said. “It’s left up to the audience to decide which side they’re on.”
