Fabric Selection [Part 1 of 2] The Saga of the Metallic Valvet

Welcome back to another episode of Coat Construction. I want to first say that my decisions about fabric, and many other things, were informed by the amazing reference photos I had from both Aria Couture and Yosa Addiss. This post will make more sense after you've looked through all those glorious images of the actual costumes. I may also sometimes be referencing AC in my commentary. I stand on their shoulders, and cannot be given even half the credit for all the great costume study that's already been done about this coat.

With that, let's get to it!

One thing I have noticed is that screen accurate fabric for this costume is extremely hard to come by, and it seems as if those of us who’ve done this cosplay raked over google enough to happen upon, and choose, the same fabrics?! Or at least consider them? I suspect I’ve seen the same golden damask fabric used for Jareth’s cummerbund amongst me and two other cosplayers. Hahaha More on that in the cummerbund post.

What I really want to talk about is the royal blue/navy colored metallic velvet that makes up the coat. It’s like a majestic night sky, but not midnight – late evening, when the darkness plays with the vivid blue of the day. The decorations on top of it are entire constellations, planets, comets, meteors...

I think the important thing to know about the fabric and to insist upon is that it’s real velvet, and not velour, nor velveteen (even though the Jim Henson exhibit sign says it is. It just AIN’T. Whoever wrote that sign needs a talking-to.)

So, what is the difference between all of these? They’re all woven fabrics made from usually silk or cotton. They each have a pile, which is a raised surface comprised of loops or strands of yarn (think carpet). Velvet has a long pile, and it’s usually very glossy and soft, and it more easily drapes over things. Velveteen has a very short pile and less sheen, and it can be a bit stiff. Velour is what you see more often in stores, because it’s an affordable look-alike to velvet, made with less luxurious cotton or synthetic fibers, and it’s stretchy. People will use the terms “velvet” and “velour” interchangeably, but they’re not the same. True velvet doesn’t stretch.

And that is why it’s the best and really only option for this coat. You’ve seen it. It’s heavy, and has heavy things hanging off of it. To be more specific, every step of the way while creating it I was being harassed by gravity. Gravity was trying to claim this velvet back to the depths… I’ve said it before: turning it into a coat felt highly non-consensual because of the heaviness and slippery nature of the materials.

That being said, weight puts stress on the seams, and even if your seams are stabilized, a fabric that’s not sturdy enough or yields to any kind of tugging is not going to be good, and it could lead to warped or misshapen areas. There’s also the glue and jewel shenanigans (which my friend calls Crust). They need to be able to cling to something that reliably keeps its shape. The ballroom coat is extremely structured and exudes power – we wouldn’t want it to start looking like a popped souffle, or like it was melting, would we?

From here I also want to point out that the coat seems to be made from velvet with metallic fibers. This means that it’s classified as a type of lurex - and you can read more about it here. This is different from foiled. Any fabric described as “foiled” if you were to try searching for metallic velvet, is not what you’re looking for. Foiling is the process of adding a metallic sheen to the surface of fabric, usually with heat. It tends to look a lot more solid and shiny, rather than sparkling. The process does not result in soft fabric, either, so it definitely messes with the pile and is much less elegant. Lurex, on the other hand, incorporates metallic fibers in just the same way you’d dot the night sky with stars. ;)

ANYWAY. Since I spent months and months roaming multiple search engines, and don’t wish for others to have to suffer through it and waste their time, I have some opinions to share about what I found. Some of these fabrics have even been mentioned by Labyrinth cosplayers as possibilities.

Mood Fabrics - Ava Navy Metallic Velvet (Link)

I’ve seen this fabric mentioned by a commenter on Aria Couture’s blogs, because it really does seem like a possible match. I bought a swatch of this fabric, thought about it for months, and then finally bought four yards, but returned them. Here’s what I have to say:

The company is reputable. They treat their fabric and customers with care. This fabric is gorgeous and quality, but it didn’t work for me because the shade of blue was too warm and light to match everything else. I only came to this realization after buying four yards of it, because the swatch that they originally sent was (I suspect) from a time when they were using a slightly different dye. What this means for anyone else is that they may not be able to rely on the swatch to make their decision. I had to return it, but they were very understanding. I still very well think that someone could use this to make a beautiful Jareth ballroom coat, if their color scheme is a little warmer.

Here are comparison photos of the swatch and the actual fabric that was sent, however. Just so you can see what I mean.

Blue Moon Fabrics - D Isis Foiled Stretch Velvet in Black/Royal (Link)

I ordered a swatch of this. I have a friend who also did, and was happy with it, so I feel like kind of a jerk for writing here that I don’t think it works, but I really truly don’t, and I want to save anyone from starting a project with it, only to have it possibly ruined. The reason why this fabric doesn’t work is that it’s very stretchy, and I just know that it couldn’t handle all the stress that would be put on it. In person, it also is an extremely bright, electric blue that will steal the show and will not serve as a good backdrop for all the top decorations. In terms of “what type of sky” it is, it’s more like 7pm on LSD. *covers mouth and laughs* But it’s still cool on its own.

Etsy Seller AlexLAFabrics - Lurex Velvet (Link)

The reason why I’m including this is because it was listed as lurex velvet, appears to be so, and has possibly the right coloring, so it may be easy to find this one and consider it, because I certainly did. Well, I’m here to say do not bother with it unless you’re willing to sacrifice $30 just to find out what this fabric is like in person. The photos aren’t good enough to tell the true shade of blue, there’s no info on how it behaves, and the guy won’t offer you a swatch or get back to your messages.

Zelouf Fabrics – Lurex Velvet in Navy (Link)

The fabric I ended up using. It’s lurex velvet, it’s the perfect shade, but it’s not super quality, definitely not as quality as the Ava Navy velvet from Mood. It was sometimes quite offended by being handled, and didn’t appreciate steam. It seemed a little thin for true velvet, and it puckered so relentlessly that I had to buy a new f*@#%ng sewing machine, and by then there were a couple of seams that had been redone so many times that the edges were… how to put it? Like skin without collagen. There were entire pieces that had to be re-cut, it was so bad.

The company also kinda sucks. Originally, I bought four yards, and it arrived shoved into a plastic wrapping that had been poked throughout transit and bursted open on my tabletop. The fabric inside had been severely abused, obviously not stored well, wrinkled, poked, torn, and they STAPLED the order details onto it. Come on. I wrote a stern email, and was not met with much professionalism, but they also weren’t out for my money and owned up to the mistake. They refunded me and then sent another four yards which was less abused, but still a little sad. Ended up with eight free yards, and some of the more abused fabric could still be used for parts of the coat that were buried under lace.

Ultimately, what I would say is… I have a love-hate relationship with it. It’s beautiful when it wants to be, very soft, and I can’t say I’d have picked something else if I did the project again, because for me it was the best option.

Anyway, I hope my bit of foot-work and 2c is valuable to someone, no matter what project they're working on or thinking of working on. The coat took about 14 months to complete, and for at least 5 of those months, I was in a stalemate about velvet. Hoping I can save someone else from that.

currently reading: Besides Dracula Daily, the Fable comics and listening to a Clockwork Orange audiobook. I'm always a suckered for fairytale retelling and I'm excited to see this versions Little Red (and Alice too apparently?). I'm super amused by the this version of A Clockwork Orange having a preface note from the author talking about how he hates this book and how Americans (and anyone has seen the movie) hasn't read/seen the full story as an epilogue chapter was cut out about how the narrator/protag grows up and stops being an evil garbage human who regrets his past misdeeds. I've never read/watched either and haven't had this spoiled for me somehow, so I'm excited to find out how this all plays out.

last song: I was gonna say that I've been listening to the Great Comet of 1812 soundtrack, but then I remembered I just listened to some of the Pokémon x Hatsune Miku Project Voltage songs.

last series: Been watching Ultraman Blazar with my person. It's great. I love how much the writers trust the audience and don't fall into annoying and unrealistic clichés.

last movie: I wanna say the newest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, I think. It was pretty good! Dated, but in an accurate way that kids probably would actually relate to it.

sweet/savory/spicy: Sweet, with savory as very closely following

currently working on: Getting my new apartment together. Just enough to have it livable. It is for the most part, but also there's enough random crap lying around to drive me crazy. Also trying to work on an Elite Four Rika cosplay which may or may not be ready for Halloween. Probably not tbh.

Okay so um, this is a WIP of my Yuusona. I’m not sure how I feel about sharing my art online yet so please be nice lmao. (Also pls excuse my messy handwriting thankiess)

Comet “Yuu” Yuusonya

Comet is a shy individual. She has really bad social anxiety and upon first arriving at NRC (much like canon Yuu, being transported from another dimension), she pretended to be a boy to blend in with the rest of the students. She’s skilled in cosplay and makeup, so it was a relatively easy task for her. She went by Kuiper (pronounced like Cooper) because it’s a space related name, much like her actual name. She’s asexual, heteroromantic, and considering the possibility of her being polyamorous.

Comet loves space and has studied constellations for years now, and she’d love to talk to someone about them. Her whole aesthetic is a mix of cottagecore and space academia. On top of cosplay and astrology, Comet loves art (including drawing, writing, theatre (she’s a little too shy for the stage though), dance, singing, fashion, all sorts of stuff—she especially loves writing poetry!), architecture, and caring for other people. Consider her a very *very* shy mom friend. She also loves animals.

Comet’s got major trust issues. And she’s Terrified of Men. And she doesn’t like it when people touch her unprompted in any way, shape, or form. So anyway things are going grEAT FOR HER /s

There’s a lot that goes into Comet, but that’s just some basics I suppose. I’ll make lots of posts about her lol.

Now for some important relationships! Since she came from another world and has no damn clue where she is or how to get home, she had to start completely over from scratch upon reaching Twisted Wonderland.

Crowley — she resents him because to her, it seems like he isn’t even trying to find her a way home, and he hasn’t done basically anything to help her. Ramshackle is falling apart on her and he isn’t doing anything! She sleeps in fear of the ceiling collapsing in on her.

Ace & Deuce — her first friends. If you can even call them that, that is… she tolerates their chaos/j. They’re kind of the only people she feels comfortable around, if that. She’s kind of scared of their chaos though.

Trey — they both enjoy baking. It’s like one of Comet’s Favorite Things To Do Ever so when she found out that not only was Trey an older brother, but a baker too? She tried her best to subtly tell him she wanted to be friends without actually having to tell him.

Floyd — Tbh one day Floyd just picked her up and took her home and she hasn’t been able to shake him since. (Except not literally because she would not hesitate to kick a tall and intimidating man who tried to touch her without asking first.) Anyway she realized pretty quick that she couldn’t get rid of Floyd and just accepted his presence. They’re best friends now.

Jade — Met Jade because of Floyd. She thinks he’s alright. She thinks he’s pretty too but she’d never say that. Okay maybe both the Leechs are pretty. Shhhh. Anyway she admires Jade’s passion for the things he likes and enjoys his presence.

Idia — they played Minecraft together once (barely talking) and now she’s decided that they’re friends as a result

Malleus — she never understood why people thought he was so intimidating. Since she’s in his club, she’s spoken to him several times. Yeah he’s tall and kind of scary-looking, but he seems nice so she considers him a friend.

Sebek — bro she hates Sebek, like she’d never say it but she finds him so annoying. Like please stop sir she’s just trying to ask Malleus what his favorite flavor of ice cream is… what do you mean he hasn’t had ice cream before??

Grim — she was so annoyed by him at first and wanted nothing to do with him, but once she got stuck with him in Ramshackle, she was quick to adopt him as her cat and now she takes care of him like she’s his mother.

I think I'm going to do that tonight I'm going to go to the comic book shop and represent us and my son a little bit and I try and get you some kind of job so pretty good at it and they'll go like madness if you're going to go okay and if I'm going to go they're going to go like madness you need some money so you have a fundraiser for Dr Manhattan and that's her actual character no but it's one of Dave's talk to Manhattan's brother well so hot. I'm seriously going down there I'm going to make a proposal people do it all the time they tell him you could do this so I didn't estimate comes out to about 30 grand so I say I want to make an investment I need you guys cuz you have the insurance capability and see what they say and I like helping put the money in front it's true too they could lose we're not going to college market time and your idea is great we call it the amateur comic book swap meet or amateur comic book" large or how about large amateur comic book swap meet" that will attract a lot cuz I think they get more money and it's true but you have to say large comic book swap meet and then you put and Comic-Con and cosplay contest I agree too and have some kind of name but it'll be like the comic book shop and they're pretty famous for having quality and Captain America and I'll say that I saw him down there violator yes it is and it's you Doctor Manhattan so this is what it's like for them it's magic and was saying that it's down the street and you can't get to a Comic-Con anywhere in Tampa or Sarasota even put a door to comic book shows for the Richie Rich for mac and his kid he doesn't even want to go I was going to suck just a bunch of old f*** comic books true too you said it goes bane and paint his black mask with the being metal stuff on it we're like a one of those vests trying to find a vest they have those leather vests cheap stuff inside the wicked hot though he's sweat marks in the leather probably online

She has some ideas she can help with the insurance and she was thinking how to get it done and she's thinking Ken and Ken doesn't want to do anything and Justin can't and all the stuff and they're kind of bums and don't have any connections anymore Stan doesn't really do anything it's worth money though she says it's like 3,400 Grand but with me there and other people going because of it they're probably be like 20,000 people a day minimum cuz they can win it out in the park elsewhere and it's like half a million and she goes oh it's their money it's cash from them so she says this well okay and Tommy f would probably use it for code but really it's for local people who have comic book collections and they think they're great and it's not like the best of the best like they're going to have in punta Gorda next weekend and she looked at and said okay and they'll be saying yeah but this one is where this guy did this and this is what this guy did this over there and he did this and I was here doing that they do that all day long this is what they're into you it's going to fart about something real real farts and Batman says he's going to meet you by the way so I get that it's a Captain America's already going to be up there about the other bats is going to be there. Is motivated cuz he got put in jail by The violator hey is my name it's not even capitalized oh we're going to capitalize on it this is fun this is nothing yeah and he wants to start making cosplay and he wants to make the comet Empire stuff and have her show up. So they won't be able to tell they have all these girls around her Asian with big teeth and these idiots too it's not really the problem I'll send I saw something I can sell tons of that now yeah she put it online and maybe you can say I'm selling it I tried that name knock it off good that's something we can do I'll do that we're going to take it all that's what we say that's what we do Hera says cuz the black guy whatever he was probably Tommy f said no and so we're going to try and do this and if they don't we're going to put it on and we'll get sponsors we think they will because it's a cool shop in a sense is pretty cool and it's very fierce didn't think about it till later so I said thank you it's about time what's up Captain America showed up I want some Korean did to him oh my God it's Captain America is supervillains.

The place in mass shootings on TV to encourage more and they keep running mass shooting guys near our sun trying to imply they should where they think we are usually end up shooting their own cuz they're all over the place.

Anyways they're trying to encourage it in their idiots how many huge problem and they keep telling people oh we did more of those and they keep dying and Tommy f is encouraging it and is a traitor and to his own kind because he's losing

I'm going to go down there sooner rather than later and it's true our son says later on later on at night they're not into it and it's like perfect timing right now they have a tournaments and stuff at like 7:30 if I get there beforehand it'll be better so I'm in route now I have a few people with me they look like comic book characters a little and one was kind of big and I said I will and Bill they're going down there now so expecting to show up and then I'll have no choice but to prove it they're going to get Colossus and Sasquatch and possibly the actual Sasquatch The Rock and they're heading out there now and they're going to the comic book store comes out to do his little routine and everyone's watching getting pissed off at him he's trying to threaten for a place you can be as blazing saddles character or sopranos character so he's getting mad doesn't know the character he has and he has a few and kind of crappy that's the way it goes so we're heading up there now I'll be there in a moment and we're bringing comic books with us and ones who want to sell there and they're expensive and we don't have wolverine number one but we're asking Sandy if she wants to go and she said maybe and she said if he has money he could buy it back and I see if you would want it back it's a lot of money now and have to bring security I'll be like going as Lucy Liu almost and we're saying other people want to go with us and he'll probably want to do it she has it back wolverine one and they start getting it a little angry this is not going our way so they're thinking of doing it and I think you might have to be able to make it all sudden they're wondering something he doesn't have any money and can't drive out there what kind of like going to just do it and notice he doesn't have money again and everyone's getting angry I want to say yeah that's the whole point cuz you're doing it and getting angry and doing nothing I'm going to do this and show them how ridiculous it looks it looks really stupid and we're going to put all the front money up including insurance and see if they want to run it and then we listed off what we're going to hire if somebody has all the facilities you have police even get hired locally and security and we have your ideas on the matter of opening more parking and having a couple trams or a few we might bring us some trams down too even just golf carts cuz they're everywhere locally those companies that do it so we'll say that we want you to put it on because we do a lot of cosplay and we sell cosplay and they may want to sell it at the shop it's true too so it's going to be fun and we'll talk about what dates see if they want to talk about they probably will when they see us walk in one of us looks like sabertooth almost the speeding image even has a little bit of a tooth coming out

The Violator

We're pulling in now and is like a little crowd there and they're all famous they want to see what we're saying and we do have some art and we have some art for the show and we want to see if they want to hold the show and sponsor it we hope so cuz it would be more successful with a local rep and we have an angle too cuz to sell product
