What little narration we’re allowed in MOTHER tells us that George and Maria were abducted by aliens in the early 1900s. Within two years, only George returned to earth. He then proceeded to isolate himself in order to study a mysterious power.
That mysterious power is PSI, or so it’s assumed.
When we encounter Gyiyg on the top of Holy Loly Mountain, he expresses gratitude for the roles George and Maria played in his raising, but he tells us that George retreated to earth with information that could prove a threat to the safety of Gyiyg’s people, thus he has come to destroy the human population in order to protect that secret.
PSI, the kind that George might’ve studied, is not the information Gyiyg was referring to.
He scoffs at every form of weaponry that we throw at him, including the PSI Ana and Ninten learn throughout the game. Ana, by the way, has absolutely no connection to George whatsoever, and yet she knows PSI even deadlier than Ninten’s. Ninten’s great-grandparents are George and Maria, and since Maria doesn’t return to Earth with her husband, that means that Ninten’s grandparent was already alive at the time of the abduction. There’s too much in-game evidence stacked against this theory for it to work.
Gyiyg does have his weakness, though, and it’s the very same element that George’s journal leads us to at the very beginning of the game.
It’s the Eight Melodies of course!
His journal never tells us this directly, but it does take us to Maria’s dream world where we get to meet her in her amnesiac state. It’s where we learn that she’s been desperately trying to remember a specific song, so desperate that she tries to sing it even in her sleep. She implores Ninten to help her find these Melodies so that she can remember the song and finally be at peace. The civilians of her dream world will drop hints to where you can find these Melodies.
George definitely knew about the Melodies and that they represented Maria’s love. It’s why EVE contains one. His conscious you encounter at his tombstone even says as much before he teleports you back to Magicant. Depending on what version of the game you’re playing, he’ll even teach you the Eighth Melody.
There is too much emphasis on this song for it not to be the pivotal power the aliens feared. Some of the Melodies are so heavily guarded; it’s almost like some force was expecting someone to be looking for them.
Maybe once the aliens realized that Maria’s love was not just a threat to Gyiyg but their whole civilization, they had to seal her away, erase her memories, and scatter the Melodies for their own protection. Maybe George had plenty of reason to escape back to earth. He had to find those Melodies so he could rescue his wife, but time got away from him as he searched. He aged and died, but not before leaving his research to his family.
It’s a theory at any rate!
I like that the Melodies were such a sentimental weight on Gyiyg’s conscience that he couldn’t continue fighting and called off the invasion. It’s a precious thing! But I just don’t buy PSI being the secret that George stole from the aliens.

So, I have a friend who's a die-hard Mother fan that unironically referred to Gyiyg as "edgy Mewtwo" and I can't quite express how much pain that caused me. Pain because I can't decide if he's right, or if, due to the release dates of each game respectively, it's the other way around.
