I’ve always loved wandering with my camera in the street, and it was even better when I carried one of my kids on my back. In the early 1980’s I started photographing @sanfranciscopride and I think one of the reasons people allowed me to make their photograph was I carried my three year old daughter on my shoulders. In the 1990’s my daughter held on to a belt loop, and with my son on my shoulders I think we provided a little entertainment. Since high school I’ve always carried a camera with me, and in 1973 as I walked to class @ucsc I saw Angela Davis walking nearby. Of course I asked if I might make a photograph of her, and she was very patient with a young, naïve, entitled, white hippy kid. I love the entire process involved in making photographs, even spotting, and especially sending a print off to a new home @sfplbookarts @sfpubliclibrary There are some of my photographs that I think should be part of an historical collection, and since I’m partial to libraries, the San Francisco Main Library has kindly accepted a few of my prints. It doesn’t seem possible that this image was made nearly 50 years ago. Today marks Professor Davis’ 79th birthday. In 1969 I heard about Woodstock, but I was 16, no money, no driver’s license, and it would be four years before I started started hitchhiking around the country, but when I heard that Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young would be playing at the old San Diego Stadium in December, I knew I had to go. I borrowed my grandmother’s old folding camera, made my way to the front of the packed crowd, and made photographs of Canned Heat’s Bob Hite (The Bear) and David Crosby. I had been making photographs for a few years, and had learned how to process film and print in the darkroom at the Naval Training Center hobby shop while my grandmother glazed ceramic frogs for the garden, but I look at December 21, 1969 as the day I really started to make photographs with intention. My grandmother died in the Naval Hospital from a cancer that ate her from within. My last memory was her reaching up for me from her bed to hold me, and as I started to stand up, her arms held me tight as if she wanted me to lift her away. David Crosby wrote “Carry Me” And then there was my mother: She was lying in white sheets there and she was waiting to die. She said, "If you'd just reach underneath this bed And untie these weights, I could surely fly. She's still smiling but she's tired, She'd like to hear that last bell ring. You know if she could she would Stand up, and she could sing, singing Carry me, carry me Carry me above the world Carry me, carry me. Yesterday, for the second time in a week, the sun came out so I headed for Chinatown. My son once asked me why I took him and his sister (and their friends) so frequently to Chinatown in San Francisco, and I think it is because my mother took me as a child. The sweet smell of incense and the colors of buildings decorated with banners and flags, and then the kindness of people towards my children. When my daughter was small it only took a few grandmothers to tell me to put a hat on the baby before I felt like The City was filled with concerned family I hadn’t yet met. And of course, if we were early, the ABC Bakery and stopping for fresh gai me bow, warm from the oven with the sweet coconut filling, and hot tea. Portland’s Chinatown is only a few blocks, the streets are too wide and empty, and make me long for the spaces of Waverly and Ross Alley; the brick walls a warm red and close, the sound of mahjong tiles clattering in the second floor rooms above…. Yesterday I stopped after passing through the lion gate, and saw the lines of the buildings in the sharp light, and began to focus my camera when I heard someone behind and turned to see a man walking past. I said good morning and he nodded and after a few steps stopped and turned, as if he thought I was waiting for him to take his place in the frame. If I’m lucky I’ll meet friends for coffee on a Saturday morning. Yesterday @oldtowncoffeepdx I was able to spend and hour with @saljaramillo1993 and @ted.mishima and Nicole, the owner. As the sun came out mid-day I was grateful to meet a few people as I wandered through Old Town, and especially enjoyed meeting Earl who teaches art to middle schoolers. It is such a gift to hear someone share stories about their life and experiences, and must be the most subversive threat to the people who want to encourage strife in America. “For millions of years, mankind lived just like the animals. Last week I received a special invitation (or summons) to visit the new county courthouse and have the opportunity to sit on a jury. I was sent home after two days and managed to get 300 pages through Zinn’s “People’s History of the U.S.” while I waited. I admit I started in the middle because the beginning was just too harsh, but with more rain I’ve gone back and started over in spite of the nightmares. There was a little break in the sky on Tuesday morning so I made a few photographs looking out of the window. When I looked closely at the negative I saw a person asking for help beside the on ramp so I’ve posted that detail in the second slide. We were told not to photograph inside, so to see the new building maybe they will send you an invite someday.
