In 1918 Evelyn Berry and Victoria Ross started a doll company called Berry & Ross. These two women were the first African American female large-scale manufacturers of black composition dolls. Considered trailblazers within their community, Berry and Ross opened their doll factory at 36-38 West 135th Street in Harlem, New York.
Retailers in New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, and other cities carried the Berry and Ross Dolls in their department stores. The company also sold dolls in Africa, a Berry and Ross doll sold for 29 cents to $3.50 for a 16-inch Doris with long flowing curls. The dolls were appealing to black and white children.
In the ‘1919 Ad in Crisis," a magazine for the NAACP Magazine, Sherry Howard wrote about the Berry & Ross Dolls, stating that "Berry's famous brown skin dolls was designed and made by colored girls in a factory owned and controlled by colored people." Howard continues, "These dolls are not the old-time, black face, red lip Aunt Jemima colored dolls but dolls well-made and truly representative of the race in hair and features." #BerryandRoss  #blackhistorymonth#blackownedcompanies #blackhistory #blackmakers #blackmakers #HarlemWorld #HarlemHistory #blackcreators #ourhistory #americanhistory #blackownedbusiness #blackwomenownedbusiness

Like mother, like daughter. This beauty parlor was run by the daughter of Madame CJ Walker who was one of the first African-American millionaires, and is credited as being the first female millionaire as well. Daughter A'Lelia Walker was born in 1885 and became president of her mother’s company in 1919, a position she held until her 1935 passing. Beyond her business, she also immersed herself in Harlem’s social scene and became quite the patron of the arts. In the 1920s she’d host artistic gatherings at her townhouse on Lenox Ave. A townhouse designed by Vertner Tandy, first registered African-American architect in NYC, and designed of Madame CJ Walker’s mansion Villa Lewaro. In 1927, she even converted a floor of the townhouse into a salon for cultural luminaries to gather. She dies in August of 1931, in much the same manner as her mother and was buried next to her mother at Woodlawn cemetery. . . . 93.1.1.10837 Byron Company (New York, N.Y.) Robinson, Mrs., Beauty Parlors (for Colored People). DATE: 1915

What is going on with Keith Haring's famous Crack is Wack mural in Harlem? The 1986 mural is actually the second "Crack is Wack" mural to be painted on that site. Originally inspired by Haring's studio assistant who had been struggling with a crack addiction, Haring chose the high publicity East Harlem handball court on 128th and the FDR Drive. After painting the first mural, Haring was arrested for vandalism, then mural was completely painted over in gray by the Parks Department, who later apologized and asked Haring to repaint the mural, eventually naming the park "Crack is Wack Playground" after Haring's death. Today it is arguably the most famous mural in NYC. Recent photos show the mural covered with paint, but luckily it is being restored by the Parks Department who with the help of the Haring Foundation selected an artist to repair the mural. “I just take my chisel and hammer it out as hard as I can without damaging it, then I take my little scraper and I scrape it. I fill it with water sealer, then fill it with concrete,” the artist told amNY. #keithharing #crackiswack #haring #graffiti #sprayart #harlem #eastharlem #harlemriver #art #mural #urbanism #streetart #newyorkcity #paint #mural #harlemhistory #nycgraffiti #parksdepartment #parks #crackiswackplayground #harlemnyc #nycurbanism #nyc #manhattan #uppermanhattan #publicart (at Crack Is Wack Playground) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1WIXe3HSH_/?igshid=gviwiufcpleb

A few weeks ago I posted about the Harlem Walk of Fame, that honors persons whose visions, creativity and leadership helped create a better world. While I thought that I took photos of all the plaques, I realized today that I missed three: politician and civic servant Adam Clayton Powell Jr., musician Tito Puente and writer Langston Hughes. #HarlemWalkofFame #Harlem #HarlemHistory #BlackHistory #BlackStudies #AfricanAmericanHistory #AfricanAmericanStudies #LatinoStudies #LatinoHistory #AdamClaytonPowellJr #TitoPuente #LangstonHughes #NewYorkCityHistory #NYCHistory #NewYorkHistory #NYC #TouristinNYC #History #Historia #Histoire #HistorySisco
